Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Debuting their second album at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, the whimsical and fiercely nonconformist musical group Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros finished up their 2013 summer tour just in time to prepare for their next circuit in the New Year. Known as much for their relentless concert schedule as their recognizable 60s hippie commune sound, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are reinvigorating the folk rock music scene alongside occasional tour mates, Mumford and Sons. Expressing a positive, love-one-another vibe while exploring self-image in their music, lead singer Alex Ebert (from Ima Robot) and his many merry cohorts put on energetic live shows that feel both intimate and global.

The show started at 6:30. They did a really cool open mic event, where 5 local artists played one song. It was a beautiful and well executed idea. After the open mic, we stood there for over an hour just waiting for the band to come out. When they did, they played their record (of which has not been released) and left. Alexander had a good stage presence, and I enjoyed sharing silly looks with him. Overall, I would have enjoyed it more if I had heard the record beforehand. The new sound they are going for does not resonate with the heartfelt, upbeat sounds of their other albums. I usually walk away from their concerts feeling lifted, joyful and alive. This particular show didn't feel as connected and warm.

the show was simply all the songs on the new album. of course it was great!!! the venue was nice and small but roomy enough even though sold out, there was still room to dance, which is always important. my only negative about the show was that it was too short. i wish they would have played more songs, but it was great to hear the new album ahead of release.

The draw for me was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, but while I was there I discovered some acts I didn't know and instantly became a fan. Festivals are great for discovering new music, and this one had a nice variety of talent. Can't wait to see the lineup for next year.

One of the best shows I have ever been to. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are the greatest band out there that no one knows. I'm so glad I got to see them twice before they started growing (saw them once in Ames Iowa when there was only about 25 in attendance!!). Every time they have been to Minneapolis they have raised the bar for what I expect from live music.

fabulous concert as Edward and his group had the entire house moving and at times singing. wish they could have sang the entire album and done a second rendition of home during the encores. His inviting the concert goers to sit with him and the band for the final song was meditative.

This is what Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros ask us in complete sincerity last night. They came out, were tired but fully committed, and brought the room to a place of joy and celebration. The show was full of touching moments, Like when frontman Alex Ebert let a patron in the front have a sip of his Guinness, then let him have the whole beer (he then walked over to the amplifier to grab a second can and began drinking with a smile). ESMZ know the power of a live performance, and use their arrangements and energy to create a full experience. Please go see them if you have a chance.

This show was an absolute blast. All three bands were SO much fun to watch and dance with. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros have the most unique energy I've ever seen at a concert. They completely blew my mind. The Local Natives had amazing harmonies. I loved the Hebrew lyrics of Fools Gold. And to top it all off, the Music Hall of Williamsburgh is a sick venue.

Heard M-zeros on the radio and watched video on U-tube. I decided to travel to see them and also Portland. It was great to see M-zeros in a small venue. Wonder Ballroom is a renovated historic building and saloon with entertainment. Young crowd so opening act had to compete with cells of people taking photos of themselves and drinking too much. When M-zeros appeared all focused on the music which was a relief. We sat in the balcony which was good for me. Seat price is reasonable yet no reserved seating. I purchased M-zeros 2nd release CD Up From Below for $10. Great price so bought a bunch for family and friends. I would go to M-zeros concert again. Alexander is good fun and very enthusiastic with expressing himself. Band is fun to watch. It's great fun to tell people I went to see Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Still not a recognized name yet always gets a smile. I continue to play the CD when mobile, etc.

The overall karma and love was felt by all. Everyone was smiling and just in the best mood ever. The band is amazing and beautiful. Just the most loving atmosphere I have ever enjoyed. Best music of all time <3 Favorite moment was when someone jumped on stage and then others started to follow and Ed Sharpe welcomed the audience onto the stage and then he came into the audience and sat down with everyone and the whole audience had a pow wow...it was so awesome!

This was my first concert ever attended. I didn't know what to expect. The opening act, Wild Belle, was really good, it got me excited for the performance. And then, when all of the members of ESMG walked on stage I almost cried. The concert was full of positive vibes and happy people. Alex, the lead singer, interacted with the audience members A LOT, going down into the crowd often, talking to people, taking requests e.t.c.

I've seen Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros numerous times. The first time was years ago and they were absolutely INCREDIBLE. The second time was equally as fantastic. The last time I saw them Jade was still with them but Alex was clearly high the entire show and could barely play. It was still an OK show. This time it was a complete "Alex" show and he has to be on drugs. Lots of rambling that didn't make sense, ambivalence over playing their old hits so he ended them mid-song, pretending as if he didn't remember the words. And, in some older songs, stopped mid-song to ramble. When he was singing his old songs, he tried to put a twist on them so they sounded off-key and just horrible. For his new music, everything was buttoned up and played through to try to impress but no one was impressed - the new music is not an evolution.

Absolutely amazing concert. I've been to many concerts, and this one was hands down the best one. Alex has such a beautiful, positive presence and interacts with the crowd a LOT. At one point he got in the middle of the crowd and danced with everyone. I was center middle and during Lullaby he sang right to me, I got so emotional I almost started crying! If you ever get a chance to see Edward Sharpe, hands down do it!!!

Alex was pure energy, and brought out a violinist and the Preservation Hall lead act to join them. The Preservation Hall alone was worth the price of the ticket. What a pairing of talent. Edward Sharpe allowed the audience to choose their next song throughout the night, singing a single verse and chorus to get it all in. Had 3 minutes til the curfew and they launched into a final song.

I don't know what show these other Stir reviews saw, but I thought it was terrible. I've never seen the Cove so empty or so many people walk out early. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I haven't seen them since Jade left the band and wow.... The 'magnetism' - and Magic is gone. I do not care for most of the new Album - they're old stuff is much more my vibe. Alex came on stage with a nearly empty bottle of wine and a joint and pretty much didn't act like he cared about anything during the show - felt he was just goin through the motions. They really should just stop playing some of their old songs if their solution is to have the audience sing Jade's parts, just terrible. I would see them in a heartbeat again if Jade was back, but as they are now, I'm not feeling them anymore.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros just don't have the same vibe without a female vocalist on stage. The lack of female presence puts a big damper on the performance of their biggest hits. Preservation Hall Jazz Band made the show worth seeing, especially when they joined ESATMZ on stage.

Where do I begin? They only played for 1 hour. Alex was wasted - the time between songs was ridiculous. I felt sorry for the band. He was obnoxious and was letting drunk fans talk into the mic. They didn't have a setlist.

I saw Edward Sharpe last year on the Lawn on D, and it was one of the best concerts I had been to in a while. He sang all the classics, "Home," "Janglin," "40 Day Dream," etc. On Monday, he sang NONE. He came out, made some jokes, made us fall in love with them AGAIN, and then broke our hearts. He played his entire new album, that has yet to be released. We could sing along to one song "No Love Like Yours," but after that, it became a waiting game. We waited. And Waited. And--wait! 45 minutes later he goes "That's the album thanks guys" and walks off of the stage. He didn't play one classic song. One song that is the sole purpose we all bought $50 tickets to see him perform. And he leaves, not even an hour after coming on stage. Will NEVER see him again. Trying not to listen to him on Spotify anymore, but god damnit his old tunes are so catchy.

Wow after a bit of hype and excitement was I really dissappointed with the show. Firstly, they only played songs off the new album(absolutely none of the stuff everyone knows)and at the end they said "well that's it" and walked off the stage - a very short set. It happened so quickly that the fans thought it was some sort of joke. No encore - no love for the fans. To their credit, the band sounded pretty good.

I had such high expectations of their performance at the Sinclair, Cambridge. Unfortunately, what transpired was a gig that was lacking in imagination, passion and length (1 hr). They started off well with an energetic song but from there things started to go rapidly downhill. The lead singer seemed distracted and disengaged. His interactions with the audience were rambling and mainly pointless. Their set list was exclusively new tracks - not a problem theoretically but when that music is sub par, it makes for a pretty lackluster, self-indulgent show. The band themselves played well but you got the impression it was a the "Alex" show and his influence put a dampener on the entire event. The gig finished rather abruptly with no encore or crescendo and the crowd shuffled out awkwardly with minimal applause and plenty of grumbling. Some comments we overheard on the way out: "well that put me to sleep", "are you sure we saw the right band?" , "do they know we paid over $200 for these tickets?", "can I ask for my money back?". Its a shame...they have lost a fan.

Having never heard Willy Mason, the opening act, was quite a surprise with his raw, powerfully impressive voice that compelled the music fans that were on time, to lend both ears to Willy's irresistible calling. When he sang," Restless Fugitive," the crowd became noticeably silent as Willy crooned the lyrics, " I feel the need to ask forgiveness, I didn t act on things I witnessed, Helpless as I watched them drown, Now I ve turned the boat around, Oh, you restless fugitive ..." I say, "More of Willy, please!" Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, were robustly entertaining the whole evening and left the diverse crowd desiring more. Their first song, "Man On Fire," set the pace for the rest of the evening as the crowd danced along with Alex and Jade, never to return to their paid seats. Jade with her melodic, melancholy-like voice sang " Fiya Wata" mesmerizing the audience and captivated the whole theater with her beauty, grace and masterful vocals. All in all, it was a beautiful evening at the Taft shared by both young and mature music lovers. I can't wait until their return.

The band was solid but the real star of the show was the venue - poolside at the Cosmpolitan 50 feet above the bustling Las Vegas strip! Is a standing room only venue but lots of room to mill about and stand 10 feet away from your favourite artist. Alternatively, you can choose to sit 200 feet back at the edge of the pool with your feet dangling in the water to blissfully offset the Vegas heat. You have a clear stage view from just about everywhere and a large billboard screen double-duties as your "concert-cam" for close-ups of the artist. I would fly back to see a favourite band play here for a uniquely intimate encounter at a great price. Tickets were $30. My only regret is that I missed seeing Florence and the Machine when they played this venue a year ago! As for the band, they played a variety of tunes - I think I heard at least 10 band members take lead vocal t some part. Jade vocals were amazing. Lots of great audience interaction. Sound was decent for an outdoor venue.

Edward Sharpe is one of my all time favorite bands, and they finally got their butts over to Norfolk! I was completely stoked about the show, everything was awesome, if I had any complaint it would be either that the show only lasted till midnight (could have lasted forever, I would have been fine with that) and that the microphones sounded just a little off or were too high so the sounds got a bit blown out here and there... but that would be me really looking for something wrong with the show. Overall a great experience and one that I will remember and cherish for some time to come. Feel honored to be surrounded by such talented musicians, poets and singers.... don't get me started on the energy they were throwing out to the crowd too.... great vibes, good times, rock on.

Had a great time! Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are great live. Sons of Fathers and Fort Atlantic were good too. I'd listen to them again. Wake Owl was ok... Maybe just not my style. They seemed to fit better in a coffee shop, not an outdoor concert. The venue was great, sound was good, and weather cooperated. It was awesome when Edward Sharpe asked someone in the audience to share their story during the song "Home" and a girl spoke up who was there with her mom celebrating because the mom just beat thyroid cancer.

I bought my tickets to this show in a Ticketmaster presale months ago. I didn't realize how great the seats were until I arrived. Row BB, in a roped-off section just a foot from the stage. The band (all 10 of them!) put on a great show. Almost all of them play multiple instruments, and all of the vocalists are great singers. The lead singer waded into the audience a few times, and lots of audience members jumped onstage to dance to the more lively tunes. The band put on a long show--2 hours. Some of them hung around onstage after the show was over to talk to fans. This is what live music is all about. The opening band--Clap Your Hands Say Yeah--was a great bonus. Oh, and the ticket prices were reasonable.

The only thing I can really complain about is how the seating works. There were some empty seats up in the front area that could have been better for someone like me who is 5 3. I had to stand behind some 5 8 people. That sucked but oh well.

This was a wonderful concert! GA allowed me to get as close to the stage as I wanted, the whole magnetic zero crew did a fantastic job and were very energetic! Ive been a fan of Ed Sharpe since the beginning and have been tracking them down for a while, this show definitely lived up to every expectation I had about seeing them!

Alexander and Jade were magnificent. The Gorge, September 4, 2011, It was a beautiful and sunny day. Perviously we had only heard their music on our iPods, and on YouTube. We jumped at the opportunity to hear them live. What was especially thrilling was having Dave Mattews (acoustic) open for them on the Meadow Stage. The crowd was great and we met some nice folks. Yes, Derrick and Kaitlyn, we will see you next year!

The venue was very cool and I would for sure return there. As for the band, they put on the best show I have seen in ages. They engage the entire audience and simply have fun which results in all there having a great time. They put on a phenomenal live performance and put out a vibe of sheer happiness that is very catching. I love them and will see them again and again and again!!!

Seeing Edward Sharpe live is the closest you will get to seeing a late 60's act, without the mud and the free smoking everywhere... The energy and feel-good atmosphere is evident in the music, the stage presence of the band, and their overall attitude. It looks like they are enjoying being there as much as you do. And they share that energy without any effort. Alex the frontman is the spirit of the band, but the musicians are fantastic. Alex will bring his singing down to the floor at the end of the show, mingling with the audience in what became sort of a community thing, and the final song (Brother) included everybody (Alex too) sitting on the floor, listening to the music as if you were around a big campfire. If you can go, don't miss it. But you have to go willing to embrace the whole experience and get carried over with the show, don't just stay back there. You will get the full of it.

Amazing! Best moments: When Edward Sharpe came down off the stage and danced in the crowd and made his way to the way back. Also, when the Preservation Hall Jazz Band came on to play with them. And finally, when Man on Fire was sung. And 40 Day Dream.

It was a fun concert and a very nice venue. However, they did take very long to come on stage and maybe only really started playing at 9. Concert ended at 10:30 due to neighborhood noise regulations. The main singer was very engaging and hung out with people after the show for their own mini concert, etc. I very much enjoyed both opening acts.

This band has really gone downhill since Jane left, stretched out performances of new songs and then rushed through single verses of songs everyone knew towards the end of the set when they realized they were running out of time. The lead singer is burnt out. 1 extra star for the prospect park bandshell being a great venue

The worst concert I've ever been to. They would stop midsong, the leader was super high, spouting nonsense and forgetting lyrics. I want my money back it was so awful

One of the best concert I've seen. It had it all, songs amazingly executed, stage shared with all the members of the band, interaction and generosity with the audience. And on top of that, a brief improvized aftershow.

Edward Sharpe was incoherent throughout the concert. She did not sing clearly, slurring the lyrics and was obnoxious to the audience.

Disappointing, unorganized. Too much profanity between songs. Abrupt ending. This band really needed to bring their A game without Jade, but unfortunately did not.

Amazing 2nd time seeing them. Out of this world vocals and instrumentals. So much fun Edward Sharpe really feeds into the crowd and comes out care free to meet and perform in the crowd. Unforgettable experience can't wait until the next time they're in town. Last saw them before Prospect Park at The governors Ball. Come back soon.

I give Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes so many props for being able to improv the way that they did. They're clearly all very talented musicians who know how to play together, and it was great to listen to a band that i love without it sounding like i was just listening to the CD verbatim. They brought out the jazz band that opened for them and did a collaborative song with them which was awesome. Alexander's stage presence was hilarious, as he's walking through the crowd all the time, talking to the audience, telling us there isn't enough time to play more of a specific song because the venue is very strict about the 10:30 cut off. Then during Home, for their last song, he gave the mic to some people in the audience to tell their stories, and one guy proposed to his girlfriend in a very cute way, so I love that the band was willing to coordinate that with him.

I bought tickets hoping that they would play one of their more popular songs "that's what's up" since it is my boyfriend and my song. So, I suffered through some inaudible stuff, two good songs, the audience telling stories (really?)... No song. It seemed like he didn't want to be there. At one point he said "30 min left!!" 30 min left? Do you have a hot date and we are holding you up? A lot of people left... Left! The rest just talked and talked and payed no attention because they had lost interest. At the end he just said something about time being up and bam, concert over. Apparently he went into the street singing and dancing. I payed for tickets, where are you going? There are people who were sleeping, with kids and they probably had work the next day. They did not want to hear you with a megaphone in the middle of the street. I'm so confused.

Mr. Sharpe has checked out. He really seems to have lost it. His band had to pick up the pieces as he would walk away mid-song. When they finished and walked off stage nobody stayed for an encore. Everyone just hurried towards the exits. Mr. Sharpe, in a desperate last ditch effort, climbed up on the VIP bar area adjacent to the exit and tried to sing along with whatever. It was sad. Magnetic Zeros should seek a new leader. I feel bad for the openers, who did great.

The vibes at the venue were great and I would highly recommend it, but it was clear that the onset of the performance that the led singer, Alexander, was heavily under the influence. His song performances were okay at best and his between song banter was completely incoherent. The concert ended very abruptly and the band moved and started playing near the exit of the venue, making it impossible for people to leave in an orderly fashion. Then after the band left the venue, Alexander became to make barefoot in the streets with a megaphone. It was exciting to see, but even more than that , it was sad to see how messed up he was. It was extremely unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend to a friend unfortunately, even though I absolutely love their music. I don't usually write reviews and I don't usually like to criticize people, but I left feeling so uncomfortable that I felt the need to share with other people who might want to avoid a similar situation.

We've seen ESMZ 3 times before this evening and each time, we left the venue high on life (and love). He's an amazing performer and the positivity he creates is so wonderful. However in Brooklyn, he fell flat...he was cursing and yelling at the audience at times....he definitely seemed to be high on more than life....he wasn't himself. Jade missing from the band definitely hurt the onstage dynamic, but he seemed totally different. We were bummed as he's a favorite of ours. Hopefully future performances will be better! Also...avoid the back of Prospect Park Bandshell...people don't stop chatting as it's a very casual spot.

I had seen Edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros two years ago and it was one of the best shows I had ever seen. This show however couldn't have been more different. He had a whole different band, was in essence solo and in fact was so on something that he was not making any sense at all. He was nibbling and it felt as if we were watching him moments before he gets put away into a mental institution and not in a good way. Big waste of my money.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes performed at Summerfest during my visit this year on the one "grounds stage" (the BMO Harris Pavilion) that allows seat reservations, and I enjoyed the show. I had only heard their one radio hit ("Home", sometimes called "that Alabama Arkansas song"), which featured a duet with a female singer who is no longer with the band (so the band has turned the song into a singalong in concert, which works fine). The band plays really well and improvises really well, so fans of Dead-inspired jam bands like Phish and Rusted Root would probably enjoy them more than I did. Still, the band put on a really enjoyable show, especially since it was included in festival admission.

Was so excited to see this band. I had even watched the tour documentary of the band, Big Easy Express, and was even more thrilled to get to see them in person. Really was anticipating the event, and was completely let down :( Didn't realize that the lead girl singer, Jade, had left the band\u2026 and the other girl was not even present, so the dynamic (10 guys) was completely different and disappointing. I also did not expect the concert to be more of a "jam session" with a lot of audience participation with their pointless stories. Alex seemed a bit stoned/drunk (not quite sure which or both) but didn't give a professional performance by anyones standards. Still love their music and listen to all the albums, but now with a bit of melancholy\u2026

I have seen these guys a few other times, with and without Jade. But I have to admit, this was my absolute favorite show from them, perhaps maybe even my new favorite for any show I've ever seen. Their music is beautiful, spiritual, while still danceable and fun. Jade's voice was absolutely angelic, and when I heard she was no longer a member of esmzeros, I was pretty sad. However, I think they may be even better without her after experiencing this show. Alexander's chemistry is now with the audience, and not with her, and it's 100% magical.

This show was absolutely amazing. I rarely ever pay money for concerts but I would pay to see Edward Sharpe any time. He has such a deep connection with his fans and he really relies on the input of the audience for what they want to see and hear. You can see the love and passion for music in every single performer on stage.

Do you enjoy a band who appreciates their fans and goes out of their way to include them? Then you must go to an Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros show. I honestly felt like I was whisked away to another time where music was all encompassing and people actually got off of their phones to sing and dance. See this band, their energy alone will turn you into a lifetime fan.

Overall, the show was a huge disappointment. Kinda figured it would be without Jade but I took a chance anyway. Alex's voice sounded like an 87 year old smoker. Most of the show was him trying to get the crowd to sing for him. They also came on to play at 10 and we're off the stage at 11 because of Cincys noise ordinance. Paying $40 bucks the band should be playing for more than an hour. To top the night off beers were $8 thanks to Horseshoe Casino which is not the greatest place to see a show anyway.

It was my first concert at horse shoe which is a cool venue and I have no complaints regarding that. However Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros were disappointing. The lead singer lost his voice which happens- so I understand that and could have gotten over that were it not for the bizzare behavior and show that resulted. He seemed to ramble on and on and there seemed to be no plan or care put into the preformance. The band sounded good and they are clearly a talented act but I ended up laughing with most of the rest of the audience and leaving early.

Really awesome energy as expected!! Alex had a cold or something, so he struggled with his vocals a bit, but it made it more fun as he interacted with the audience a lot more. The musicians in this band are absolutely phenomenal! The drummers had all the prisoners across the street dancing in their cells :) We heard all of our favorite songs, including some from Alex's solo album! My girlfriend and I had a total blast!! It was a great ending to a wonderful weekend after Friday's ruling of equal rights!!!! Oh and my girl got to touch Alex's hand after the show :) Total topper :)

The lead singers voice was gone, and he was unable to sing his songs. The band seemed to be killing time during many parts of the show so that fewer songs would have to be sang. The lead singer could have seriously injured his vocal chords. By the end of the show, he was barely even talking, much less singing. Sadly, I left disappointed.
