Alabama Shakes

Alabama Shakes

Since its 2009 formation, the small-town quintet known as Alabama Shakes has delivered a swampy blues rock that’s taken the mainstream Southern rock genre by storm. The Athens, AL, outfit, comprised of frontwoman/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboardist Ben Tanner and drummer Steve Johnson, has released one album, 2012’s “Boys & Girls.” The ATO Records debut moved all the way to No. 8 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than half a million copies to date.

The title says it all, in short, but does not do this show justice. To say it was amazing is an understatement. I go to more than 10 shows a year, and this one takes the cake as the best one of 2016. There isn't anything like Brittany Howard's voice. The band's sound is just incredible!

Brittany Howard is a legend, alive and under 25 (!)....and I was drop jaw astounded by how amazing her vocal gift is as I stood second row just stage right of center at the Fonda Theater a few weeks ago. I don't normally like standing in a tightly packed pit near any stage for any performer, no matter my love for their artistry. But in this case, I so do not regret being elbow to elbow with sweaty intoxicated others, to be able to have experienced this young but old soul in human talent form at this point in her career where she is just taking off like a bright silver comet in a dark blue night sky. This young woman is AMAZING!! I kept having to close my jaw because at times I realized how long it was hanging open at how her voice shook the entire house's core. I wasn't the only one shaking my head, mouth agape, in shock of being in the presence of such musical talent...everywhere i looked around me....people were enamored and flabberghasted at what they were witnessing. Her band is incredibly supportive and seemingly willing to play the background to what I'm sure they recognize to be an incredibly gifted lead singer for their own vibrational gifts. B. Howard made little small talk throughout her show, and didn't need to as just her songs were epic enough. She opened the show with taking the mike and diving right into a song... no "hi", no intro....just BAM! Musical genius. I will definitely be seeing this band again and again.:)

I've seen Alabama Shakes twice (Bonnaroo & Central Park Summer Stage) and they were great both times. The only issue I have with their live show is that it is quiet. Maybe it's just because I saw them at two outdoor venues, but I feel like their sound guys need to do a better job at mixing their instruments/vocals. Some of the guitar solos didn't quite cut through and even at "full volume" you could still talk to the person next to you at normal, conversational volume. All in all, though, a fantastic band with an incredible live show. I would definitely catch them if they're in your town.

Saw Alabama shakes at the fox theater in Pomona on august 15..amazing! The venue was super cool, 1930's or 40's theater with outside balconies really beautiful. But the band, Britany the lead singer is mature beyond her young age. Her voice is soulful and her presence onstage is incredibly inviting. I have been to many shows in my 48 years, lots of different genres of music and this was one of the best shows I have ever seen. They rocked with the opening bands horn section (antibalas) which was really cool too. Such a great show and they appeal to young and old. I went with my 24 year old daughter and she loved it as much as I did. Worth every penny and would love to see them again when they come to town. What a great rock band with a whole lotta southern sou!

Went to the show to see Alabama with Antibalas opening. Very bad idea to have Antibalas open the show. They were amazing! Smoking set!! After they finished I remarked to my girlfriend, "I would'nt want to follow that band if I was Alabama Shakes". Turned out to be just the case. As much as we love the Shakes and they were great this night, we just were not ready for down tempo soul after listening to hardcore afrobeat. We both actually felt bad about not feeling the Shakes like we wanted to. Please understand that in no way am I dissing the Shakes, we still love em'. This is on the booker/promoter.

Power. Pure power. Watching such a young band generate so much force was incredible. You forgot at certain moments that you were watching Brittany and not a female incarnation of John Fogerty when he was young and could sing. It was a pleasure to see a small band before they seriously explode and forget about affordable club shows and ditch us, like the Chili Peppers and Radiohead did for the inaudible and overpriced arenas and stadiums. I am glad we got to see them so early in their career...when the hunger and honest ferocity helped them to give us a truly impacting and powerful show.

Alabama Shakes is best new band of 2012. Brittany and her bandmates should be seen live to truly feel the power and energy of their perfromance. It is rare to have such a phenom singer arrive on the scene and not be a diva - just a good heart with lots of soul!

Brittany, Zac (who had time to take photos with bride and boys) and the rest of band delivered an awesome and very powerful show. Alabama Shakes were FANNNTASTIC! However, the crowd was pretty lame. No one was dancing, and as my boyfriend and I were enjoying ourselves and dancing around because their music has the best rhythm, we were getting dirty looks from the 50+ crowd.

Love the Paradise Rock club in Boston. Old school! The Shakes were alsum! The crowd was really into it, and the band was on. I was pleasantly surprised by the opening act Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires. They played hard driving southern rock, and displayed a lot of energy. Some of the Shakes came out to play with Lee Bains for their last song, and I though that was a nice touch and kind of connected the bands and showed that they were all having a good time.

The concert opened with an amiable but forgettable hick. I couldn't believe he took the stage at the elegant Pageant in overalls and waders. Really?? His songs were pleasant enough, and I liked the acoustic kick-off, but I don't care if I see or hear of him again. Fly Golden Eagle, the middle performers, were EXCELLENT!!! They are a band to watch. Great music, great stage presence. The only flaw was the long (and unexplained) break waiting for Alabama Shakes to start. It was almost 10:00 on a weeknight by the time they finally took the stage. I would have appreciated some apology, and some explanation, but it didn't happen. We all just stared at the vacant stage for close to 45 minutes. However, when Alabama Shakes took the stage, they COMMANDED it!! Brittany is amazing, she wails, she croons, she almost cries, and then she ROCKS!!! By the end of the encore, I was emotionally spent, even sated. They were great.

This show was one of the best that I have attended! The venue was awesome and the first opening act made me fall in love with him. I was jumping and dancing through all three acts. I love Britney, she is very inspiring. I wish she would look and engage more often to the crowd in the middle, she always seems to engage more to the very front and the back but I never noticed her looking to engage the middle.

Sound was magnificent. The band sounded great. The wait for Alabama Shakes to go on after their opener(s) was a bit long - we started to get restless. The music sounded great; then the band took a break whereby they shone the lights on the audience. It seemed too early for an encore break, then they came back, played a few more songs and the set was over. I'd seen them open for Jack White in Asheville, and as an opener, a short set is fine. As a headliner, their performance should have been at least 20 minutes longer.

This show was simply amazing. The band was tight (who knew 4 white dudes could have so much soul, LOL) and Brittany Howard is everything you want from a legitimate rock star: stage presence, command of the material and maybe the best vocals of anyone in the business right now. Simply put, they are a breath of fresh air in the music scene and their stage show is everything their album is and more. Just a great band to see live.

So I was a bit worried that maybe the songs would run into each other - could not have been more wrong. Great show. forget the chair and blanket, stood and danced the whole show. The band itself was amazing, however, the concert was shortened and seemed rather rushed due to a pending storm. There wasn't a great deal of interaction with the audience, which I believe was a result of worrying about the weather. Overall, I'm slightly bummed that I spent so much on these tickets because the concert was so short and there was such little interaction. I could have just listened to the album through and through and that would have been the same as the concert. Overall, however, Alabama Shakes has so much talent and sounded great.

My first concert since high school and I completely loved the Alabama Shakes. The show was great and Brittany Howard hit ever single note! The whole entire band was spot on. Sound system was top notch at the venue and the light show was very enlightening in an awesome way. I would definitely go see them again. I really liked the venue as well. I think the sound mix was terrible. To loud and to muddy, absolutely no distinction between the instruments. I wonder who does sound at this event, the band or is it house sound? Also the set was very short, barely 90 minutes. Brittany is definitely a powerful singer, very emotional on stage.

It was dicey! We didn't know if this was a go. The Event Website told us to come early. The opening act was good , The Shakes were on promptly. It was a short show due to inclement weather. Thompsons Point just doesn't cut it in damp weather, I am not happy with the parking set up even if you pay $20 extra, for it. I find the folks standing in the front just make it nearly impossible to see. This particular crowd was difficult to navigate, and I have been to Jazz Fest! If you are in the 'Picnic' area" be prepared to hear well but see a speck of the performer. However Brittney Howard is a force . I would see her every time I could. This is my 3rd time seeing Alabama Shakes, love them.

Alabama Shakes are awesome but the length of the concert was extremely short. Many of the most downloaded songs and our favorites were not performed. I am assuming that they were probably saved for the encore which never happened due to a strong weather pattern approaching the area. I understand this and completely get it, except I am sure without a doubt that they were closely monitoring the weather and knew the pattern was approaching. I feel that they should have changed their song schedule to include more their hits. That was very disappointing.

Due to approaching rainstorm, organizers moved show up 1/2 hour. Evidently Twitter followers were notified, but not Ticketmaster customers?!?!? This makes no sense. I received a very nice and informative email regarding the show at 11am the day of the show... You know, parking info, policies etc. But no email to tell me that the show had been rescheduled?!?!? So we arrived on time to see AS, but found they had already started playing 30 minutes prior. THEN the show ended early with a "mandatory evacuation" because of an imminent weather event. Guess what, the weather event turned out to be some rain... They evacuated the "rain or shine" show because of some rain. In total we saw about 20-30 minutes of the show. Between tickets and hotel this cost us over $400.

I am a huge fan of the Shakes. I was really excited to see them especially at this venue. I really like the BHBP for concerts. The shakes gave it their all as they always do but the sound was terrible! It was loud, muffled, and the vocals were garbled and impossible to hear. This is not the venue. Up there with Genesis at wembly. Up there with Billy Joel in Tampa..... Great show..... Alabama Shakes reaches ecstasy when she performs..... Also enjoyed learning about Emily King. Emily king had a very beautiful voice and good stage presence. She was very different than Alabama Shakes in a complementary way. Bought some of her music. Alabama Shakes is nothing more of the best live! Brittany Howard's vocals are as powerful as you'd expect live! One of the only down sides that I had (as well as everyone else) was that they do not perform their first hit song "Hold On" on tour. Being at the stage for this show was the best concert experience of my life.

Oh my God. I knew this was going to be that band that I loved listening to, but would be taken to a whole new level once I saw them live. The singer, Brittany Howard had an effortlessly powerful stage presence and her voice gave my friend and I chills through out the entire performance. I cannot wait for them to come back to Las Vegas. I will see them every time.

The lead singer from Alabama Shakes has a set of lungs on her! She adds so much energy to the performance. Their album doesn't do her and the band justice!

So much talent from all three bands! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed every set, and I was blown away by the lead singer of the Alabama Shakes. I knew she was amazing before I got there, but she was even better in person than on the album! It was so cool to see a woman up there running the show!!

Great show, great energy for the homecoming of the Shakes! Brittany Howard is an extremely talented musician who knows how to captivate a crowd! A must see! Only downfall was, I think Sloss Furnace oversold the show! Almost uncomfortably crowded. :( Otherwise, a great night!

I could have lived without the opening acts and been just as happy with only seeing Alabama Shakes. Brittany Howard is beyond compare and gives absolutely everything she has to the audience.

My expectations were high, but this was phenomenal. I knew Alabama Shakes would be good, but actually experiencing it is another feeling I can't quite put into words. Also, seeing Corinne Bailey Rae open for them was the cherry on top--I've loved her music for years.

We had seats on the left of the venue. The sound system was terrible with distorted sounds. We could not understand the performers when they talked, and we could not understand the song lyrics. Such a shame that 2 fabulous bands had to perform with such bad sound. We recently saw Lyle Lovett at the amphitheater at William and Mary. Even though he is soft spoken, we could understand every word, both spoken and sung. The Portsmouth Pavillion is a lovely spot. Please replace the sound system with an improved system.

From start to finish, an awesome night, complete with full moon!! Corinne Bailey Rae was perfection, and set a beautiful tone for the rest of our musical night. One word for Brittany Howard & Alabama Shakes.......Unforgettable!! I believe she will go down in musical history with the great female vocalists, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Etta James, and Bonnie Raitt!! The Portsmouth Pavilion is one of the best venues in the area, my favorite place to see a show, the minute the music starts, the sound is so rich and full, you can't beat the view and that incredible breeze off the river. It all came together for a very memorable evening!

I have never been to this venue before nor had I ever seen them in concert. It was such a great experience. They had the crowd on fire the whole time they performed, even if you were not familiar with a certain song yet, you could not help but to get into it because of the intensity of the band. You can clearly see they enjoy making their music and put their all into each and every performance.

Oh boy what a show on Friday night. Brittany Howard is one of the best on stage performers that I have seen in years. She is also a very fine guitar player. The band was awesome and the crowd was up and dancing. Strongly recommend this group for music fans of all ages. There were 12 year olds as well as retirement age white hairs and everyone had fun. 5 stars for sure because she IS awesome.

Great Concert! Excellent Venue! Perfect Night! The sight lines at the Portsmouth Pavilion are very good. The crowd was really into the show without being obnoxious. Alabama Shakes, what can you say? Brittany Howard just pours herself into the songs. I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat the whole time, with a few tears also. One of the better shows I have seen in my lifetime, her band is really tight and Alabama Shakes are one of the few bands like Arcade Fire, Trampled by Turtles, etc... that sound better live. Great Weather! Great Show! I would go back in a heartbeat. If you are a fan of the blues, R&B, soul, rock & roll go see Alabama Shakes!

One of my Top 5 favorite/best concerts in my 43 years! I will see them more than once. Should they ever return to Phoenix I would not be doing them justice if I did not convince at least 100 more people to attend their concert. I was so impressed I bought a concert shirt which I have NEVER done.

First of all....this band sounds great live! Brittany has the pipes, the emotion, the passion when she sings. I listened to her words and they are strong and powerful. The whole band sounded great and looked like they were having as great of a time performing as I did watching them perform.
