Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle, mastermind behind sketch comedy goldmine Chappelle's Show, made a triumphant return to stand-up comedy in 2013. While he's beloved for his famous impersonations of Rick James and Prince, Chappelle doesn't rely on old material for his stand-up act, treating fans to an all-original show featuring extensive improvisation as he interacts with audiences. At his 2013 performances on The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, which he co-headlined with Flight of the Conchords, Chappelle had fans rolling on the floor, building anticipation for his highly coveted 2014 tour dates.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Not only was there 4 Great Performing Artists on this tour... the improv at the end was the icing on the cake. 10:30pm show ending at 2am. Boston don t ever get that... amazingggggg! Worth every penny for this experience.

I cannot believe how incredible the show was Each performer was amazing and funny. But the best part was the ending how intimate and comfortable all the performers were just talking and joking and making the audience feel like they were in their living room. I didn t want to leave even though I had work/kids in the AM.

Not what I expected. The guy is not just funny (unfortunately not very this evening) but very thoughtful, well-informed and charismatic. Though did not have a lot of gut wrenching laughs I was totally entertained (except for his piece on sound effects). Also, he had some throw away comments that let us "in" a bit and made it a very personal experience. And he stayed onstage for hours- definitely got my $ worth. Can't wait to see him again.

The other reviews on here were clearly not written by serious fans of Dave's. Yes, there was not much prepared material, and I still laughed my ass off for almost 5 hours. Just being around the man is funny and he says some really introspective and interesting things, and is willing to stay until wee hours of the morning. If you thought it was draggy and not worth it you've probably watched the Rick James episode once on DVD and think you like Dave Chappelle. Watch his two standups and his Inside the Actor's Studio episode, and if you still think you're interested in what he has to say, then definitely check him out. Think about some good questions before you go -- he solicits them from the audience. And please, for everyone's sake, not "where's Charlie Murphy?" or "do Tyrone Biggums!"

I have seen Dave perform before and this particular night, the energy was just not there. I don't know if he just didn't connect with the crowd or wasn't feeling it in general, but the energy was just really low. I am a huge fan and know he has better in him, but if it was my first time I would have been disappointed.

So, I went to the 11PM showing of this show. There was an earlier show at 8PM and one the day before. I heard great reviews about the show the previous day and really had high hopes. He started out great and gave us a good 1 hour of comedy, but then it just got really slow and dragged. You just sat there waiting for a joke not knowing what to expect. I would have preferred him to just end earlier than go an additional hour with little content

Look, this show was funny. Very funny. There's no doubt about that. However, it was also strange. Chappelle came off as a paranoid, bitter, broken man who thinks he is being blackballed by Hollywood. He complained a great deal about not being offered jobs within the business almost as much as he cracked jokes. At one point, he even claimed the FBI may be following him. Chappelle seemed bored throughout much of the performance. He did about 30 minutes of actual 'material,' then talked with the audience for the rest of the show. I understand the need to work on improv skills by talking with the audience, but even when he was doing this, he didn't seem that into it. It was as if he didn't care, and was ready to get off the stage. Plus, most of the exchanges with people in the audience were not even funny or interesting. Drunk people in the audience shouting random things to a comedian does not equal an entertaining show. Strange vibe for sure. Dave Chappelle is great, we all know that. Comedic genius, one of the best of his generation. It just seems like it's gone to his head, and as a result, he may have gotten a bit lazy. Be aware of this when you're about to spend $50 or more on a ticket to see him perform.

Kinda odd. Dave just sat on stage the whole time chain smoking and asking the crowd what they wanted to talk abouut and when I say the whole time I mean for FIVE hours. There certainly were some really funny parts...the impov "movie" had some really funny parts.

to rock the crowd. I've been a huge fan for years and have never seen someone so disinterested in their craft. to ask your audience to give you topics to joke about is sloppy. its great for a few minutes, but not for 4 hours. I didn't pay 100+ to see someone smoke cigarettes and drink coffee. My two cents.

One of the funniest comics i seen in my life. We had a blast at the show. Chris Tucker, Donnell Rawlings, Hannibal Buress and Dave killed it tonight. Only thing bad was that white lady that did her set between the intermission which really sucked. Dave went over everything current on what was goin on. But he kept talking and rambling about Trump on and on which was kinda too much. Overall, this guy is the man. Not only is he funny but hes a cool person that gives other comics a chance to have their shine on his shows and he gives back to the people afterwards. Highly recommend to everybody out there!

We went to the 10 pm show. His set was a mixture of stories, jokes, talking to the audience, sending people drinks. He seemed very honest and at times vulnerable. It was as though you were invited over to his house to hang out for a few hours. Pretty cool.

We were smitten by his body fo'sho. We hung out at Moses Roses per his plug and the party continued til about 230am. He noticed us as well and we gave each other two thumbs up! Every comic was great at this show. The biggest surprise was Sarah Tiana! She was the right blend of funny, raunchy and cute to pull it off! Tony Woods was as hilarious as always, Chris Tucker was enjoyable, Michael Che did a great job and Tom Segura is one of my favorites of all time! The leading man, Mr. Dave Chapelle did not disappoint either. He can get away with saying just about anything and you can't help but bust a gut. The lawn was super crowded and security blocked every convenient access-way, forcing you to climb over people and blankets to get to a restroom or another $20 beer! Be prepared to have a healthy serving of second hand smoke on the lawn as well. All-in-all we had a great time, but next time I will try to get a real seat!

The two opening comics were good--especially Hannibal Burress, who tailored his set to the New Orleans audience. The DJ who played between sets was a nice touch. I was a bit skeptical of the show after the first performer came out and then there was a break. 10 minutes later the second performer comes out and he was funnier than the first. We drove 3 hrs to the City to see these two. Original tickets were changed when Chappelle added NAS, glad he did that. The crowd was hyped-up with anticipation, but observed requests by Chappelle. Chappelle' classic story line of jokes were acutely humorous. He brought humor to everyday circumstances(LBGT, The "N" word, Family, Inter-racial marriage...) He was on top of his game and delivered a show to be remembered. NAS brought the house down--people remained on their feet/dancing in the aisles--throughout his entire act. The staff at Radio City were courtesy and professional.

Dave Chappelle ROCKED San Diego on Friday, the 18th!!! I have been a loyal fan for many years, but after his appearance in Hartford, CT didn't go so well, I didn't exactly know what to expect. Well, he did not disappoint. Even with the mediocre accommodations provided by Sprekels Theater, the show was nothing less than absolutely amazing. The aging Sprekels building had very poor air conditioning and ventilation, which made it a very uncomfortable for both Dave and the audience. However, not one person left their seat to go outside for fresh air or to get refreshments. Dave joking mentioned the increasingly hot temps on more than one occasion, while never once attempting to interrupt his set to go outside or even just to take a sip of water. He stayed the course and repeatedly reduced us, the audience, to tears from laughter. Even with a crowd of roughly 1,400 people, his interaction with us made it feel as though we were hanging out with him in his living room, or at a dinner party. Even with some invited or provoked hackling, San Diego showed Dave the respect he most certainly deserved, by not taking things too far. His comedy was fun, fresh, relatable and, ABSOLUTELY hysterical. Had the show not sold out so quickly, I would've paid to see every show twice! The only thing I would to change about the show, is the venue. We need a much larger venue with better ventilation and air conditioning. However, if Dave held a show in a disgusting public bathroom, I'd still pay double the admission to see him again... He was just, that, awesome! Please come visit us again, Dave!!! San Diego LOVES YOU!

The show was prompt, and his opening acts were great. I can't remember their names though. The show started about 20 minutes late. Dave was his usual inappropriately hilarious self! He joked about leaving the $50 million deal behind, his journey to Africa, buying and owning a farm in Ohio, having a mom who is half Caucasian (his dad is African-American) and his interracial marriage, being at home so much and how his kids view him as a parent, relationships with his neighbors, Oscar Pistorius, and so much more (and, yes, I realize some of this appears to be a non-sequiter but that's Dave's active mind) The two opening acts (female comedians and both African-American) were pedestrian and made you appreciate the insight and genius of Dave. Hopefully, they will grow their content to focus on subjects beyond race relations.

Seeing Dave live always makes for an unforgettable and unparalleled night out. He thrives off crowd interaction, and his comedic sense is second to none in using that banter to make pointed and hilarious observations. Every show (this was my second time seeing him in two weeks) is totally unique because of his prolific improvisation, and it's totally worth seeing multiple times. Occasionally, your show may become sidetracked by an overzealous audience member (as tonight's was), but Dave eventually will set them straight. It's all a part of the greater Chappelle stand-up experience!

I attended the show in Detroit on Sunday. Dave was so down to earth and cool. It wasn't a show as much as it felt like sitting down having a fun conversation with one of your crazy friends. The funniest for me is when he said President Obama would carry a gun and if someone treid to assassinate him, he would pull out his gun and shoot back. Then he would rip off his shirt and yell Chi-Town N-word!!!! HILARIOUS!!!! I was rolling! Anyway, I hated that he came out an hour and 15 mins after the alleged start time. I really hate when shows don't start on time. But he was worth the wait...

Dave is as awesome as ever. Mostly improv interaction with the crowd weaved together with his written material as a cohesive 2.5 hour set.

First off, this show is not like your typical comedy stand up. Dave is a master that is extremely comfortable on stage and don't need to run thru a rehearsed set...he works off the cuff with the crowd and even the hecklers, tell hilarious storylike jokes, and will even have a couple of pauses that seem awkward. With your typical comedian, you'd think they were forgetting material or falling apart...but this dude is just masterful at timing, extremely witty, and in my opinion, the closest thing you'll see to Richard Pryor...so when coming to his show, put away any impatient, short attention span, "fast food" mentality you may have. He doesn't do your typical 80 mins. Because he can work off the cuff and seems most comfortable on stage, his show ended up being 2 and a half hours of amazing, hilarious comedy. So...sit back and watch the best at work. Enjoy!!!

I kind of knew John would be more Political with his brand of comedy, but Dave really surprised me with his attack on the First Lady, which by the way she Deserved.

First off the show was absolutely incredible. Really funny, poignant, edgy, and thought providing as yours expect from two of the greats in sheer comedy and social commentary. The only down side was the venue having no police or plan to make sure people got in and out easily. It took 1 and a half hours just to get in to park. Once out of the car, everything else went smoothly. Easy in to the arena, wonderful show, and easy getting back to your car only to have to sit for 45 minutes to be able to leave. If not for the type of people they were, any one else would have started the show- they postponed the start to give people time to overcome the traffic woes.

I really wanted to love this show. It was good, but not great. John Stewart is better on a tv show than as a stand-up. Dave Chappelle is brilliant as always, but he told one story about Chuck Barry that was so repulsive I wanted to cover my ears. I just wanted it to end but it went on and on and on (some people walked out), It left me feeling flat and disappointed. Mo Amer opened the show and he was great.

Amazing, unforgettable show! Started around 11 and lasted until 2! Loved the energy, fantastic performance! They answered questions from the audience at the end, Dave shared cigarette with a fan :) Openers were also great, I didn t expect to see Pete Davidson. But John and Dave- just pure brilliance.

Had never been to this venue before. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised on how great it was for a comedy show. Not sure the capacity, but it seemed just right. We had upper level seats, but there is really not a bad seat in the house. Our tickets said they were obstructed view, and they were slightly with the rail blocking the stage, but with the screen and my height, it wasn't an issue. The sound was great and the location in Sugar Land was awesome. We stayed down by the City Walk area and it was an $8 Uber ride. I will say that the parking and traffic flow was awful because they scheduled a second show after ours (apparently the first time they had done this), they really need to work out those kinks. The show itself was fantastic. Dave Chappelle is on fire! I saw him about 3 years ago in Houston and it was awesome, but he's even more polished as a stand up now. He's just in the Zone. Jon Stewart was Jon Stewart and the opening acts were great, as well. My wife and I were glad to get away for a night and we'll definitely be looking at this venue again for acts that we'd enjoy seeing. Concessions were outrageous, but they seem to be that way everywhere now. I suggest you pre-game if you want to knock a few back. Overall an amazing experience.

I think John Stewart missed the memo that this was suppose to be a comedy show. I didn t laugh once while he was on stage. Chappelle was good. They had two openers. One was ok and the other was Pete Davidson. Pete was horrible. Half the show was not worth $1. The other half of the show was decent. I totally overpaid for this show. The event space was also impossible to get into and out of. I don t think I would do a show at this location either.

Dave Chapelle was great! He puts a lot of thought into his comedy or maybe not and it was hilarious! Watched Chapelle over the years with his show and specials and he still has the wit we have grown to love about him. Only downside is that for the price of the ticket, I would have preferred him to be on stage longer and skipped the dude from SNL.

The opening act (MOE) he was funny.. . but the other two acts before Chappel "Horrible" inappropriate for the show to political and the guy from MTV made a reference to child molestation not funny at all.... just not funny he needs a new line of work. Dave was just OK old jokes his time on stage was so short , the show wasn't worth the money. I want pay to see him again VERY DISAPPOINTED! That's the reason he wants our phones locked away because he doesn't want anyone to know how BAD his show is.

I love how they improv and came out on stage at the end of the night, talked to the audience, went over time, and just knew how special that night was. It was the most unforgettable show i ve Been too. I love, love, the show. Michael Che was a great opening act. I saved my ticket in my journal.

Dave was great. Pete Davidson was horrible. The sex with a baby joke was terrible. I get he wants to be an dark and edgy comic, but sex with a baby joke is not a good look. The host and John Steward were okay, but I was there to see Dave Chappelle, so I wont knock the show based on opening acts. The facility is terrible at best. Takes 40 minutes to park after you exit the highway. The whole phone pouch process is such a waste. You stand in line to check your phone in the pouch, then you get in another line to re-open the pouch and scan your ticket, then you get in another line to close the pouch again. Big waste of time and energy when you could have one line to do everything. Show was to start at 10:30pm, but because of the phone pouch disaster and the difficulty getting into the parking, almost everyone was 30 mins late. I am glad they decided to push the show back 30 mins. Other than the facility and Pete Davidson, Dave was very funny. I would go again.

It would not seem these two comedians would share the limelight but they did, bringing a solid one-two punch. Stewart brought his take on life and politics I have missed since he gave up his chair on The Daily Show. His insights on current events were fantastic. Dave Chappelle did not disappoint. He continues to bring fresh material to each show, focusing on various topics in his life and in ours. The best part of the show was the end. Stewart and Chappelle took the stage for additional stories and a brief Q & A. It made the experience worth the price of admission.

one of the things i was most curious about was the phone bag thing. it was quick going in and getting out so added pretty much only seconds to the evening. i didnt know how the show would be presented but knew it would be good regardless. it was jon. then dave. then jon and dave. constant laughs from start to finish. and the opening guy was good too. all in all it was just under 3 hours. 7:30 to about 10/10:15.
