Dawes

Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end.

Dawes was such a powerful burst of joy at the Orpheum that the crowd jumped to it's feet and remained standing for the entire show! This was 2 full sets from the band, 3 hours of music, and the energy only grew as fans seemed overwhelmed with happiness. It was an unforgettable evening!

If you ever wanted to experience a love affair between a crowd at First Ave and a band that loves them back, you should have been there! I saw cartoon hearts and stars flying back n forth from the stage for almost 2 hours. The crowd knew most of the songs and happily bellowed them with authority. This is the third time I've seen these guys, they opened for Edward Sharpe last year, introducing themselves. When they played at Taste of MN to the same adoring fans, they proudly announced their "first big one" in November at First Avenue. A personal invitation was extended to each person there, and I'm pretty certain EVERYONE showed up. What a fun night! The music was incredible, the atmosphere cheerful and welcoming, the band was on fire! The boys announced an upcoming cd, i can hardly wait. Thanks to The Current for turning the Twin Cities into this lovefest and playing Dawes. ....to the band, please come back soon. This is your home, now!

Great show at First Ave. in Minneapolis on Thursday night. Wonderful energy and passion before a sold-out crowd. Heart-breaking lyrics and transcendent harmonies - these guys are for real, and one to see every time they are in town. Three or four songs from an upcoming new album this Spring were among their strongest songs, and I love their current one. Don't miss them!

One of the best shows I've ever seen! So much energy from both the band and crowd. When they played "When My Time Comes," it felt like a scene from the movie with the whole crowd singing along at the top of their lungs! Dawes started out strong, seemed to lose the crowd in the middle, and then brought us back in at the end. The lyrics for two of the "new" songs - "Fire Away" and "A Little Bit of Everything" - were a little too cheesy for my liking, but everyone else seemed to like it. I think they are a good band with a lot of potential, but they're young and just not there yet.

Dawes has been a must see act when they perform in or around Columbus, Ohio so I jumped at the chance to see them in Nashville at the Ryman. They paid appropriate homage to the Mother Church with their words but most importantly their performance. They brought the "A" game.

This band is so special. Every song is great and they don't all sound alike. Great lyrics. Every musician in the band is so talented and adds so much to each song. And whoever set up their sound did a perfect job this time. It wasn't too loud, as is often the case at concerts. You could hear and understand Taylor's speaking and singing. Of course, it was the Ryman, so it's a wonderful place for a concert. This is our second time to hear them and this time was even better than the last. I loved the fact they did both sets, no opening act, because it meant we got to hear more of them. If I could have, I would have stayed in town and come back the next night, but unfortunately not possible. Great concert, great band! Congratulations to them!

This is the third time seeing Dawes. First time was at Loloapolooza, where they were they only had 30 - 45 minutes to perform. Second time was where they were an opening act for Bob Dylan. My wife and I went more to see Dawes than Dylan. Unfortunately, they were like step children in this audience. Again, only getting to play for around 30 minutes. This time around was different. No opening act. Just Dawes. They played for 2.5 hours. They were very active with the crowd, sound was great, band was outstanding. I would suggest to anyone out there, who are not familiar with Dawes, to see them now. They will get big soon. Now is the best time to see them, in the intimate small venues.

They covered all the styles of concert "preference" the crowd loved, frankly. And that's why I say... you truly got "a little bit of everything". We loved the diversity. You got screaming guitars, energy, soft spoken gratitutes, bobbing heads, and an intimate sing session in which the patrons stayed engaged the whole night. Surprise encore too and all in a theater setting that was like being under the evening stars. The concert title "An Evening With Dawes" was beyond appropriate!

I sure hope the sound mix in the remainder of the auditorium was better than it was down front (3rd row center). Y'all really need/needed some monitors for the front orchestra section. It seemed the sound was going over and around us and thus it was muted and not even close to being immediate or clear. Thus the experience was quite disappointing and frustrating.

Dawes delivered an amazing show! Part favorites, part jam and a surprise acapella moment - a little it of everything- showcased great musical talent and the ability to move the crowd-no one sat, not even for a minute! It's remarkable that a band with so much lyrical and musical power does not sell out much larger venues.Instead of hype, these guys focus on the real deal - music. Dawes has rocked the Newport Folk Festival and has a huge online fan base. If you love music, you'll love Dawes. Can't get this show out if my head! Thoughtful songs, amazing vocal harmonies, guitar harmonies, killer baselines, overall chemistry, and no one beats Taylor goldsmith as a front man. He brings out the best in his band and in the audience. The guy radiates a joyous energy that is absolutely contagious. He's like an electrified pied piper. Wherever you go, Dawes, I'll follow! And the new keyboard player was awesome, too! I didn't think anyone could match tay''s light touch, but this guy was great, and he added a playfulness to the group. They all just looked like they were having so much fun up there, and all ages in the audience were smiling and singing along. Really an inspiring show!

These guys are high energy, well-rehearsed, and know what their audience likes. Plenty of good music with fine playing and good vocals. There are no flat spots in their set, which went on for 2 hours with the audience loving every minute of it. On their albums, Dawes is a bit laid back, but that is not the case with the live show. Although I had seen Dawes a few times as an opening act, this was my first time attending a Dawes headlining show. The longer set allowed the band to really reach a higher level of energy which made the concert amazing! It is so fun to watch great musicians who obviously love playing music together. Taylor sounded terrific (vocals and guitar) and the addition of the guitar work of Duane Betts really brought the songs to a whole new level. Griffin's work behind the drums and Tay's behind the keys were so good. Wylie on bass always seems flawless. Dawes is a band that sounds even better live than they do on their recordings. I definitely left wanting to hear more, and I am going to attend another Dawes show as soon as I can. I also got to see the pre-show acoustic set that Taylor did and it was brief but amazing. Taylor has such a wonderful voice and I always enjoy listening to the lyrics and the way he delivers them.

This is the way music should be experienced. Jane Pickens is a turn of the century hidden gem that seats 500. We were up close and personal. Dawes covered all of the bases with good (if not entirely comprehensive) selections from earlier records and the usual full coverage of their latest release. The positive energy was palpable throughout the evening and especially during a full-fledged sing-along of "When My Time Comes". The band played exhaustively for a full two hours including an encore welcoming back fun Southern opening act Shovels & Rope. The venue proved a good fit for the band's endearing folk rock, intimate enough to foster some interaction between the band and the crowd but large enough to enhance the rocking guitar and keyboard solos. Lead singer Taylor Goldsmith claimed it was "the biggest Dawes show ever" and it certainly did not disappoint.

We had planned a trip to Nashville and decided to catch a show at the Ryman to see if it was as incredible as everyone said. The dates of our trip were set, so we picked a band that we wanted to see and hoped for the best. We were so not disappointed. This show was amazing. No opening act, so it was all Dawes covering tunes from all facets of their career. And as an added bonus they were touring with Dickie Betts son Duane, who turns out to be an amazing guitarist just like his Dad. The show was absolutely beyond awesome. Great energy, and wonderful collaboration between all the musicians. This review comes with two recommendations. Catch a show at the Ryman, any show, and you will be happy I'm sure. Dawes is the most exciting new artist to hit the airwaves in a long time. They are a tight band with killer vocals and terrific songwriting. The Ryman felt "just right" for the band. The audience however was so over the top that they interfered with the show occasionally. The person behind us dumped part of her 2 beers on my GF's head which put a damper on the night. She is an example of fans that don't know how to behave indoors in a smaller venue. there were some shouters in the back that also ruined a few intimate moments. I give the venue and band and A + but the crowd I would give a C- to.

The song selection and the lead-ups to each song were fantastic. I only wished that Dawes was playing a second night in NYC so I could go back for more. Great job guys!!! See you soon!!!

A sold out house that included Jackson Browne in the audience, partied for over 2 1/2 hours with this amazing band. Each song felt like a sing along and we all felt like we should be on stage with them. The band is tight and Taylor has never sounded better. Usually the sound at the Beacon leaves a little to be desired, but tonight the stars were aligned. Everything went great and I was glad to be a part of it.. Simply put, they were DAWESOME!!

I really like Dawes' records, filled with nice harmonies, various musical styles, and excellent musical and audio quality, but I wasn't sure exactly what I'd hear at their show at the Beacon Theatre. It was tremendous. They were tight, and they took literally every NOTE seriously, paying attention to every last detail. It was an awesome show, and I will see them as soon as they come back to NYC!

Dawes is an incredible band. They were clearly thrilled to be playing The Beacon, classic venue that it is. Musically, they were super tight. And the energy was way up.

We liked Dawes music from hearing their hits on Spectrum, and we bought a CD. But nothing prepared us for their unbelievably incredible live show. Clearly inspired by Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, and I think even a little Paul Simon, the fantastic band played nearly 3 hours at the famed Beacon Theatre in NY, and it was a night to remember. Oh yeah.... and the guitar playing was so great.... I believe Dickie Betts son was playing guitar and he blew the roof off the place. This band rocks....and the songwriting is equally memorable. Go see Dawes!!!!

Dawes never disappoints! I have seen this band previously and they always deliver a great performance. They played two full sets that lasted over two and a half hours! The venue was outstanding as well!

This was my fourth time seeing Dawes and first in about 18 months and I was blown away at the evolution. Obviously, the music is great but I was impressed by the overall show and the new stage setup, intro/ outro's to songs, etc. Can't wait to see them again, hopefully sooner than 18 months!

I have been fortunate to know this band for many years. They have grown up. The first 2 times I saw them they were in a little dive. Seeing them at Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) was a treat. They have a full great sound and are adding instrumentation to their songs. It is fun to watch a band mature and get better as they age into Rock and Roll

I heard an interview with Dawes and one of their songs, so was less familiar with the music. The sound mixing was the best I have heard in the last 10 concerts - instruments did not overpower the vocals - vocals were incredible! Good job to sound board engineer. Demographics were mixed, from teens to much older crowd, indicating a wide appeal. The 5th member on guitar at this show was brilliant - keep him, guys. You have a new fan.

I have never seen these guys before. I am a huge fan. I had A Little Bit of Everything performed live at my wedding. My wife and I came to the show. Basically, these guys tour continuously. Are they tired? It is unfortunate that apparently bands have to tour all the time to make any money now. It was an okay show, but, they didn't knock me dead. The band seems to be isolated from one another. It seems to just be a show about Taylor showing off his songwriting and guitar skills. Many guitar solos and jams went on too long or were just not inspiring. I found myself just enduring many songs and then when they played something I love "Time Spent in Los Angeles", they cut it short after the first chorus. At that point I was jsut pissed. They really were only present for their out front acoustic portion. It was very cool when Griffin sang his songs. Basically, when it all over, you feel like you were just supposed to worship Taylor in all his greatness and his dandyism. Honestly, I don't see this band staying together. Taylor just seems arrogant and controlling honestly.

Dawes occupies a sweet spot somewhere between Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, with Eagles-esque harmonies. And they write honest-to-God, heartfelt songs, some of which remind me of DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN-era Springsteen. Their goal is to be the hardest working band in America, and while lead singer Taylor Goldsmith isn t exactly the Boss (who else could be?), the band s nearly three-hour show was epic.

I had a passing knowledge of the band, and loved the venue, so I thought it would be an enjoyable thing to do on a Friday. I brought my girlfriend, who had never heard of them, and we had one of the best times ever! She was so taken by their music, which was expertly paced, from a hard fast opening, into some slower ballad like songs, to full ballads. People were on their feet from the very opening. Things ebbed and flowed perfectly until they took a short break, The lead singer then came out and did a solo ballad (his specialty IMO) and then he band came out and did a couple of acoustic accompanied a Capella songs led by the drummer, and the voices were great. It was my girlfriends favorite part! On a personal note, it was one of the most romantic times we have had. We had seats midway up the floor, which happened to be next to one of the pillars directly under the balcony, which allowed us to lean against it and hold each other through the whole concert. She was genuinely moved by the music, which was the icing on the evening, and an unexpected joy. The musicianship was fantastic, and the lead guitarist/singer is equally accomplished in both, with his guitar playing lush with vintage tones and tasty licks.

Haven't seen a show this good in a long time and I see a lot of concerts. Love them, love their music, love it all. I will see them again and again and again. They played almost 3 hours too and no opener, which was a huge perk to me.
