Black Lips

BLACK LIPS IN CONCERT:Atlanta's Black Lips are masters of barn-burning garage rock, combining the jangly insouciance of lo-fi and the infinite attitude of first wave punk to arrive at a singular swamp-garage sound.  The frenetic energy of their recordings is surpassed only by their antic-filled live shows, where fans mosh with reckless abandon to tightly wound nuggets like "Family Tree" and the band performs an endless variety of crowd-pleasing lewd stunts. Hot on the heels of their seventh album Underneath the Rainbow, the band will treat fans to another string of deliciously bawdy shows on their 2014 North American tour.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Formed in Georgia in 1999, Black Lips have been thumbing their noses from the get-go, only intensifying their anarchic behavior after guitarist Cole Alexander and bassist Jared Swilley were kicked out of high school for constituting a "subculture danger" in a post-Columbine world.

I've been to many many shows and this was my first time being able to finally see the black lips. The energy from the bands was great but the people really kicked it off as soon as the black lips came on stage. It was a great sight to see people creating an old school friendly kick ass pit, not one of those throwing punches BS pits. All in all it was an amazing show with great people and fantastic music.

If you don't know who the black lips are then you should really check them out. I saw them in Atlanta on Halloween. So it was a homecoming of sorts. As soon as the band started the whole crowed went into a frenzy of moshing, crowd surfing, and beer throwing. The band was on top of everything and the crowd was loving it. By the end of the show I was covered head to toe in sweat, beer, and confetti smiling ear to ear. In my opinion that's how every punk rock show should be. I plan on seeing them every time they are in town from here on out.

My husband and I were excited to see Black Lips and the music was good. However, each time they stopped playing and one of them opened their mouth to speak they noticeably lost more and more of the audience. Saying things like "I've had better lobster in Kansas", "I've never been this far north" followed by "are there any other hicks in the audience" was bad enough. Thanking Boston while in Portland Maine....okay, it happens. It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of an entertainer not knowing where they are. But, not giving a damn to say sorry and recover from that....no way. These guys came off as rude and inconsiderate and for that I won't go see them again. Hey, the music isn't THAT great. Not anymore.

I've seen King Khan and his Shrines twice before, this was first time seeing him and bbq show together, it was magical, I wouldn't trade those moments for anything, King Khan is easily my favorite person alive right now. he and anyone hes involved with is a maniac, its fantastical. The black lips put on an incredible show as well for my first time and its guaranteed that won't be the last. The Venue was small and tough, nice deck area. All around solid performances from all. Then for the encore, their superband the Allmighty Defenders came out and destroyed us some more! So amazing.

Great, high energy show and fun moshing audience. Too bad the venue made them start and end early, but definitely no complaints about the band.

Overall, great show. The opener, Natural Child, was good, but nothing I was going crazy for. Their music was great for opening for the Black Lips I think, but it was obvious that the band had a long night the night before and that they were a little tired. Black Lips delivered though. Great set all the way through, very energetic, made for a great time in the audience.

seriously, the band was tight, fast and fluid...you could tell they were having fun BUT the event was full of hipsters and punk rock wannabes...who throws beer anymore? i'm old school and was a punk rocker in my day (early 70's) and when you went to small venues like cbgb's things got crazy and in the moment and mosh pitty, not my style but i understood and stepped back BUT to see it happening 30 plus years later in a big venue was kinda, sorta STUPID and somewhat ridiculous...pushing their way to the front, many drunk and rude...it doesn't mean you're not cool if you say "excuse me"...was so very glad to see one of my favorite bands but alas NEVER again if i have to put up with assholes...AMEN p.s...the opening band "natural child" was a pleasant surprise

Admittedly, I only knew a couple of Black Lips songs so I went into this without a solid understanding of their work. They have more of a punk edge than I expected which made the show a lot more fun than I had planned. They went all-in and so did the crowd. Great show

This was the second time that I've seen the Black Lips live. Each time, I've had a lot of fun. This time I made my husband come and he walked away wishing we could travel to their other Florida shows!

The floor was pulsating from the dancing. A guy flew at me from the stage and hurt my pinkie. A sweaty man was completely wet. Cole threw his guitar into the crowd at the end. I went stage diving, as did a number of other folks...It was a great show!

Amazing energy from the bands and crowd. Movers ands Shakers seem a little green, but they had a couple good tracks. I talked to the bassist and he said they play in the Cambridge area. I guess I would check them out again. Box Elders played about 20 songs in 30 minutes and I dug most of them. The drummer was nuts and they had a rarely seen double guitar / double bass combo. I'll support any band that does that just on principal. I became a fan of The Black Lips after seeing them open for The Raconteurs a couple of years ago. The Middle East was a great venue to see them. Non stop action from start to finish. I know crowd surfing and stage diving kind of died after the Drew Bledsoe incident, but I was loving it last night. Can't wait to see them again.
