Emmy the Great
EMMY THE GREAT IN CONCERT:Indie folk singer-songwriter Emmy The Great certainly lives up to her moniker in concert, where she delights ticket buyers with her blend of fiery guitar pop and tender ballads. In concert she's covered songs by bands as diverse as Weezer, Pixies, and Meat Puppets, but it's her original material that showcases her true artistry. From the vulnerable tell-all "We Almost Had A Baby" to sultry tunes like "Swimming Pool", she transitions seamlessly between acoustic and electric sounds. Graced with her world-wise, smoky voice and a penchant for witty lyricism that gives her music claws, Emmy is a dynamic performer who keeps fans thoroughly entertained at her live shows.

Wonderful performance. Band consists of Emmy on vocals, guitar, and some stationery choreo; her brother on guitar providing some melodic concepts and some harmonic/textural washes; and a synthesist playing keys and singing spot-on harmonies. Drums provided via digital sequencer. A screen behind the performers displays projections. Sometimes the projections consist of video of Emmy doing simple choreo with which she would perform in sync, among an assortment of other imagery. Tight, professional playing. Excellent blend of timbres. Subtle, nuanced, sensitive, and powerful without being overpowering. For me the highlight is Emmy's singing voice. Talented and highly skilled. She calmly exudes confidence, singing with perfect intonation, ample vibrato and splendid timbre, and once and again flexing her skill by shifting timbre/resonance on a dime to add effect/emphasis to specific words/phrases. The performance transmitted highly positive energy, and the ensemble seemed warmly connected to one another.
