Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson

Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stays true to his Appalachian roots with his no-frills singing style and boot-stomping live shows. His rocking sound pays homage to country outlaws like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but never feels like imitation -- Simpson's cerebral lyrics and psychedelic production touches keep the music firmly grounded in the present. Whether he's extolling the virtues of a \"Life of Sin\" or playing his unique cover of When In Rome's \"The Promise\", Simpson always impresses with his authentic vocals, smart songwriting, and unbeatable energy on tour.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Sturgill Simps.

Sturglll Simpson brings it to every concert. As much as i miss his Muscle Shoals horn line he shreds the guitar and the acoustic set was sublime. Sturgill please safeguard your anazing voice. Don't sing every single night. Also the Radio City amplification was superflous and an impediment to really listening to that smooth rich voice of yours. Please please release a live album.

Sturgill Simpson is the epitome of talent and entertainment. His guitarist is out of control amazing and the show that those two put on together can not be beaten by any other artist in the industry today. Myself and half the audience couldn't understand why Sturgill was only opening & not headlining. Hopefully that changes very soon.

This was not billed to show "co-headliner" status in an obvious way. Completely missed Simpson since he was on first, but his face is on the ad and his name is the predominant one in all adds.

Typically the headliner plays last, but at this concert Sturgill played first and we missed it. We were trying to time it to hear Sturgill and be able to gamble a little bit. Not very happy with the waste of money on the seats to have the set schedule done in an other than usual way.

Simply put, Sturgill Simpson is the best band going They blew the doors off and left everyone clamoring for more. No disrespect to Jason Isbel as I do know he's a good songwriter, but there was nothing he could do to match what Sturgill brought to the stage.

Great re-birth of Country Music in the tones of Waylon. Great musicians with special notation of lead guitar called "Joe" from Estonia. Outstanding addition to the core. As Sturgill gains working capital he might benefit from his own sound board operator. Strong recommendation for this show. Hope he gets some exposure when out west. True country fans will applaud Sturgill's arrival on the scene and push for his continued success. Can't wait for his next album.

On Thursday night at the Brighton Music Hall I heard and saw a performance that was just brilliant. Laur Joamets performance on lead guitar was smokin' and the rock solid bass of Kevin Black and percussion work of Miles Miller was spot on. This was the third time in a about a year that I have witnessed their performance live and Sturgill and the boys have never sounded better. To say the show was awesome would be a gross understatement. In just under 2 hours time these guys burned down the joint! I first heard and met Sturgill Simpson in Knoxville, TN., in August of 2013. He was good then- and by good, I mean good enough to sign on a major label. That however, was never apart of SS's agenda. Go see him "...in some smoky bar with bad sound and a dim lit stage" while you still can. You won't be disappointed.

Sturgill Simpson s show was a great big fat letdown. Most of the songs sounded similar and all of them reminded me of music you would have heard in a 1980 s country western bar. Simpson fluctuated between channeling the voices of Waylon Jennings and John Conlee. There is nothing new in Simpson s music or singing style-just old ground being re-covered. It seems nostalgia may be driving the recent hype over his music. The guy playing the electric guitar in the back-up band is very good. His solos made the rest of Simpsons show endurable. Chris Jacobs, the opening act and a local from Baltimore, was the highlight of the evening. I could have listened to him all night. Jacobs is a talented singer and musician. On a few songs he played an electric three string cigar box guitar. His style of music is refreshing and inventive. Jacobs interacted well with the audience.

Saw Sturgill Simpson the first time at his debut at the Opry last year. My mouth dropped 15 seconds into his first song. Was totally blown away and wondering where in the world did he come from? Followed his show dates and when I found he was going to be in Alexandria...searched for the tickets then and there! First time to the Birchmere...that was awesome too! Sturgill Simpson and his band put on an amazing show and I am even a bigger fan now! Real, authentic sound and great musicians as well. Cannot wait to see them again. Would buy a ticket again.....right now... to see the exact same show! Bought both his CD's after also buying and downloading his CDs online. With the release of his tour dates just yesterday, I have purchased tickets to the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion 2014 to see Sturgill Simpson perform there again! But I firmly believe that the Birchmere was by far one of the best venues to witness the talent of Sturgill Simpson. Just perfect all around!!

This show was hands down, the best show I've seen at the Birchmere. The opening act, Cris Jacobs, was rockin' out solo and his voice is beautiful. His songs gave me goosebumps, and man, can he wail on the guitar. Sturgill Simpson came out and not only did he and his band play incredible music, they provided a bit of stand up comedy too. They played non-stop for over an hour and a half and the songs were heartbreaking and foot stompin' and not a single person was just sitting there. The whole audience was into the show and it was great to see so many fans in the DC area. I will see him when he comes back time and again.

Never saw Sturgill before. It was a good show but way too short. He had a good band and he's a pretty good guitarist but he only played 90 minutes exactly and no encore. Who doesn't play an encore these days? At the price of tickets these days, no show should be under two hours

Something was off with this performance, does anyone know? Acoustics, lighting, no horn section, too much organ, extended jam sessions, 4 song acoustic interlude including Long White Line? Very disappointed in this performance, we brought several friends to introduce them to Sturgill and to under sell it, they won't be investing any time or $ on his music. He missed the opportunity to broaden his base.

This concert was incredible. We had so much fun having dinner and drinks in the surrounding area and then made our way to the pavilion. The pavilion was HUGE with so many things to see inside. Simpson was PHENOMENAL! He played a good mix and when it came time for some guitar solos we were in the aisles dancing! It was so much fun and he is incredibly talented. We had such a wonderful experience....would definitely go to the pavilion and see Simpson again!

This was my third Simpson show on this tour. First two (Kings Theater in Brooklyn and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville) had a superb horn section in the band - it really added to the sound and the performance. Have to say the show suffered with their absence. Love Sturgill, his band is fantastic, but boy I sure did miss the horns.

The opening act was very talented but his use of language was a big turn off. The pit is big at this venue and if it's not full there is a gap in the energy. They should let the GA come down once the show starts. Lastly, the show ended without an encore...lame!

Merle and Van Morrison had a baby in 1940. That baby grew up listening to Leadbelly. Then, that baby built a time machine and went to the 70s and learned to play guitar from Jimi Hendrix. Then, that baby time traveled to last night and possessed the body of Sturgill Simpson. Yeah. It was like that

I have seen Sturgill a couple of times, always with a horn section that I love. But this show was a simple quartet, Sturgill on guitar was joined by bass, keyboards and drums. It was an awesome show. It felt like watching some friends jam out in a garage. He would improvise guitar solos that made every song feel like a 'finale'. I believe we really saw something special and tell my friends that weren't there that the really missed out.

I've been to plenty of concerts, but never before have I been captivated by a performers sheer talent quite like Sturgill Simpson. He is without the brass section, but what he lacks in backup instruments he will make up for with guitar solos and jam sessions with his band. You can tell that his true passion in life is music, and he puts his heart and soul into every song. His vocals are powerful, his talent is impressive. He may be classified as a country artist, but don't be fooled. This is one of the best rock concert you will ever see. Sturgill and the band were amazing. On a hot, steamy Carolina evening they rocked out for an hour and 40 minutes. Sturgill was fun and his performance was dynamic. He did not perform Turtles All the Way Down, In Bloom, and was cut short about midway through Welcome to Earth (Pollywog) because of a pedal board malfunction and never finished the song later in the set. I am still a little shocked that the concert ended with no encore and missing a couple of my favorite songs, but I would go again in a second. Had a ton of fun and Sturgill is one hell of a performer.

Definitely enjoyed the show but was very odd to just end a song, walk off with no encore. The security guard by us told us there would be no encore so this was all part of the preshow plan and especially since it was only 10:30pm and there were a few technical delays during the show it was just strange and disappointing. By the way, sound ordinance in Charlotte begins at 11:00 on the weekend so that's not why there was no encore.

First off it's Sturgill Simpson so the music he played was great but it was a short show and there were technical problems. Halfway through Pollywog he stopped because his equipment wasn't working and then he just abandoned the song. Hugh let down there. He didn't play a lot of the crowd favorites like Turtles or King Turd, but I understand it's his newer album's tour. His voice was awesome. He covered a few songs that were great. Overall good show, but I was hoping for a lot more as was the crowd. There were a lot of people complaining as we were walking out... no encore.

This show was mildly disappointing. After seeing Sturgill at the Ryman in Oct. 2016 with his entire band, this show simply did not measure up... not having his normal band (which I read iin Rolling Stone just disbanded -pun intended) really was a detractor from this live performance. Sturgill also just played 2 quick sets and then packed up without much fanfare or encore, pulled the curtains, and disappeared. Not your typical Sturgill performance... I'll still g see him next though...

I saw Sturgill Simpson in July 2015 at SlossFest in Birmingham. It was outdoors and hot but the sound and vibe were much much better than this show at the Alabama Theater. I have watched movies, standup comedy and a few concerts here and the SOUND IS LESS THAN IDEAL (specifically for vocals/words). Sturgill was sick so his voice wasn't in great shape, plus bad sound made it less than ideal. Crowd was kinda into it on a Sunday night.

Not only was Sturgill amazing, his band was the best I have seen. From the horn section, the drums, the keyboards, to Laur on the lead and steel guitar. They played songs from the first two albums. They played most of the biggest songs on those two albums. They also, scattered in some classics like "I never go around mirrors". Then they started the latest album A Sailor's Guide to Earth. They played all the songs on the album in order with out much break in between the songs. They even added to solos within and at the end of songs. Overall, one of the best concerts I have ever seen!

I am not a country fan except for the real old school stuff, Hank and Willie etc... i found out about Sturgill from another site that a group was discussing "Turtles All The Way Down". I listened just for novelty and as the youtube playlsit started behind that amazing track I realized this band was no joke. Rich in lyrical content and top notch musicianship. Soon after the sailor's Guide album was for sale on pre-release and I bought it. I was not disappointed. I will say i prefer the live show to the recordings, some of that studio polish is replaced with a grit that hits the soul. I am also into House music, the Grateful Dead etc... so I had to dance. One of these days the rest of the crowd may catch up to the few of us that couldn't stay in our seats.

This is the 3rd time I've seen Sturgill and every time I see him he doesn't disappoint. The Ryman and Sturgill go perfectly together and I'm so glad he added the Sunday show so I could attend! The band, the sound, the lighting, and all of the above were spot on. The only thing I wish would have happened that didn't was him playing "you can have the crown". If that's my only complaint then you know it was a great show. I can't say enough about how great of an artist he is, music just pours out of him from head to toe and it's a priveledge to watch!

Comparable to no one, Sturgill once again gave us an unforgettable show filled with super high energy, incredible guitar solos and crazy great vocals. Love, love, love this man's work. Best show I've seen all year, and I go to see a lot of music. Happy that this show featured guitars instead of horns (I saw Sturgill with his horn section last year, also amazing, but I like the guitars better). Not the best venue for Sturgill, he's best in a club, but he has earned the bigger audiences. Nice quartet with excellent guitar/keyboards interplay. He indicated he was not feeling well and promised to return / looking forward to that - hopefully in a Hall with better acoustics.

Sturgill got too famous too quick - now he plays for thousands of people but hasn't learned the tricks that veteran arena rockers use to engage an audience that size. He toured as just a small, 4-person garage band without all the accompaniment of the horns and strings which was a huge mistake. His album sound is big and grandiose but his live presence is more suited to a smaller nightclub/bar. When he starts playing smaller venues, I'd happily pay to see him again, but he's out of his league in front of thousands of paying guests.

Simpson puts on a great show as much for what he doesn't do as what he does. He has assembled a fantastic band and he spent large portions of the night over at the side of the stage letting them stretch. The first 75 minutes or so saw them run through his older material and some covers, and then they played the wonderful "A Sailor's Guide to Earth" album in its entirety. Talked to many in the crowd who were disappointed that this wasn't an outdoor event, but a much greater buzz was created by packing 2200 fans indoors instead of guessing whether or not they could get 5000 outside. The problem with being inside is that the sound was a problem for much of the show. Simpson's acoustic guitar was barely audible, as were the drummer's backing vox. Still, great show. Maybe EXPRESS LIVE can figure out how to get the excellent sound they have outside into their indoor shows. Oh, and it may bring in big $ but they should definitely get rid of the reserved seating in the balcony. It attracts corporate suit types who spend the whole time looking at their phones instead of watching the show.

This man had been battling sickness and still sounded better than he does on an album! Absolutely, hands down, the best show I have seen in quite a few years! The band could not be any better either! If you are in any way a fan of even one song of Sturgill's this show will convert you to a full on super fan!

My first time seeing Sturgill live, and my first time at this venue. Something isn't right. His vocals were inaudible. Might be poor acoustics or a bad microphone, but his lyrics were not audible. Sell out crowd was into his every song. Played for over two hours. No encore. For me his horns blended into his music like a woven fabric. Just awesome. The guitar licks were tight and showed his talent. Four stars out of five because of the blurred acoustics. He is a must see!

Sturgill was absolutely amazing! Great show, he is an awesome live performer, even sick! The only thing that could have been better is if the show was outside.

Sturgill announced he was not feeling well when the show started. He still rocked the house, even though his voice was a bit off. The band killed it, they are really tight. The sound in the Alabama Theatre is a little rough on the the balcony. The crowd always sucks in Alabama.

Even if Sturgill had to drink hot tea in between every song due to illness, he still killed it out there. Amazing!

This show was a great experience. The fans all felt appreciative to be there and I did not feel any negative energy. The music was on point, even though the lead had a supposed cold. I wish I would have been able to score tickets to Nashville to experience this band all over again. Loved it!

Completely satisfied with Sturgill Simpson and company's show at Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. They had great energy, played nearly everything in his repertoire, and left us wishing they had more.

I love Sturgill Simpson's music and had been looking forward to his Calgary show all summer, however it was extremely disappointing. There was no opening act (which is ok, just unusual), but Sturgill Simpson totally stoned out of his mind and super distant towards the audience the whole show. I get it, musicians are often hi, but really, no matter what you're on, you can still say "Hello" to the people who came out to support you! He never once acknowledged his audience and when he finally did introduce his band, he skipped/forgot to introduce his trombone player! The audio was a little poor and his voice got a little drown out by the band. There was no encore, the sound guys were packing up as soon as the band left the stage after the last song. Overall, a poor performance by a guy who doesn't acknowledge his fans.

As everyone that follows Simpson knows, it was a sellout. The best seats I could get were in the balcony. The sound quality was very poor. I do not know if it was The Palace or Simpson but it was so unclear we could not make out words in the balcony. I do not know if it was any better on the lower level. Very disappointed. I have seen a few of his shows and this was the first time I could not understand him. Also, the time of the show was confusing. The tickets said 8:30 and The Palace box office said 8:30 but some locations on the web such as Simpson's site said the show was at 7:00.

This was my first SS show and he was a great performer as expected, but several of us were complaining about the poor quality of the sound equipment. I've been to several shows in this venue and never had a problem, but could understand almost none of the lyrics. Those that knew his songs better than I were fine with it, but it was a bummer for those of us new to him that were hoping to become bigger fans. Not sure if the issue was the equipment, the technician, the acoustics (unlikely given past experience) or all of the above. That said, I love his music and he was a good performer so I would love to try him again in a different venue.
