Public Enemy

Public Enemy

PUBLIC ENEMY IN CONCERT:Hip hop pioneers and modern day rap legends Public Enemy are still bringing the noise, nearly three decades after establishing themselves as "Public Enemy No. 1" with their 1987 debut single. Flavor Flav and crew had game then and they got game now, keeping classic rap alive as they continue to 'scream vocal javelins' at the right enemies and innovate on the one's and two's. Following their 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Public Enemy will "Fight the Power" on their 2014 tour dates, including a highly anticipated appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

My husband and I drove 7 hours to see Public Enemy. We stopped at Wal-mart so I could get a red marker for an autograph with PE. I got that and so much more. The VIP pass was well worth it. We were in the front row and had free drinks and food most of the day. I took great pictures and got autographs with all the performers except Chubb Rock (left early). All of them were very nice to me, including mean ass Ed Lover who did a great job MCing for hours. From 2-103:30ish they didn't seemed bothered by all the picture/autograph request from us fans. Keith Murray was super hyped and excited to be on stage with PE.. I even have a picture of him kissing me on the cheek. Loved the Heavy D tribute by Kool Moe Dee. My friends hate me because I took a pictures with Play, Treach and Method Man. To see that Redman and Meth are still close friends was inspiring (I remember when they had a TV show). Kid & Play were awesome and nice. Scarface is not from NY but really enjoyed himself with his peers. It was great to see Das EFX and Brand Nubian perform . I was able to take great pictures of/with DJ Kool spinning. Chuck D is the nicest guy. He hung out with us the whole day. There performance was so hyped and motivating. The people putting on the venue were awesome, great job sistah Tangie. The downsides: My friends & Co-workers hate me. No Geto Boys; the VIP perks were not as listed: no cover, and AC and the stars were not in the tent that had VIP access (Yes, I snuck to All Access side). I ran into a lady who couldn't buy VIP tix, but there was so much more available space on the VIP side. I also expected more people to be in attendance with this awesome line up. PE is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They sell out in Europe but not at home, really. I would do it again if I could be treated like that again and hang out with these Hip-Hop Gods.

It was a cool concert. They played the movie (documentary filmed by young people, I can't remember the name) before the concert, that got a little old after a while. But the concert was good. It was the 1st time my wife or I had seen them perform. We are around 50 and thought we'd be the oldest people there but, we were wrong :-), there was a lot of 'older' people there. And the crowd was very diverse. It's a good thing we knew a lot of the lyrics cause the sound system wasn't the best but, all and all we had a great time. The only thing that would have made it better for us, would have been if it was held on a Fri or Sat night, it was hard getting up for work on Thursday.

Lame. Not tight musically, not tight theatrically. Flava Flav seems to be all about...Flava Flav. Flav's and Chuck D's attempts to encourage the audience to broader engagement were poorly-constructed (encouraging a mostly-collegiate audience to "stay in school" and get their HS diplomas...) and poorly-spoken. Go see a Maceo Parker show. It's musical and tight and full of groove and craftsmanship. PE was not much that wasn't copped from James Brown and P-funk. Really loud, but really boring.

PE showed why they are in the discussion for the greatest rap group of all time. Deep bass, timeless lyrics, the original "hype man" Flava and Chuck D all cometogether for a great throw back concert to 1989.

the concert started on time, special ed was good, he only did a few songs which were his hits back in the day, mc lyte in my opinion was a highlight of the tour, big daddy kane was also a highlight, expecially at the end when he did that memorable split! amazing! krs one came out strong but..too much talking in between, naughty by nature, did not enjoy their performance at all, sat down the whole time, and the show stopper, public enemy should nt have even been reffered to as that! they turned all of their music into rock songs, just not right! we left before the end of their performance. overall the concert had two high highlight performers, mc lyte and big daddy kane

the show started on time, the artists were phenomenal! I have been every year they had this concert and this concert was one of the best only thing I wish Doug E fresh was there! Now I dI'd take a star away because they oversold our tickets! They sold our seats to someone else even though we had the tickets but customer service was able to get us to on the floor which made it much uber dope.

It was a long night but totally worth it. I had to work early the next day so I didn't want to stay late. The concert was supposed to start at 8pm but of course the headline act (Public Enemy) didn't come on until closer to 1am. As the night crept on I almost bailed to go home to my comfy bed. But then Doug E Fresh came out and re-energized the crowd. Then Whoodini came out and killed it. Then Kool Moe Dee came out and was amazing. The show kept getting better and better. Next thing I know it's 1am and I'm hip deep in PE. When Flavor Flav jumped out it was all over for me. I was hooked and in it for the long haul. Glad I stayed. One of the best shows I've seen in a while.

An incredibly dope show!! PE covered the entire Fear of a Black Planet album as well as a few other of their top hits, including Don t Believe the Hype , Rebel Without a Pause , and even going way back to Public Enemy #1 . Their energy was tremendous (mind you these guys are in their 50s) and their voices were all on point/booming (sounded just like the record). This show was an absolute treat for any PE fan! Chuck even stayed well after to chat and sign autographs, it was just plain DOPE!!! Makes you understand how ALIVE Hip Hop really is. The Norva s sound system sounded great as well.

Public Enemy has been making music and touring the world for over 20 years now! They continue to make timely music that has real substance. Over the course of the last two decades they have also refined their stage show and this time around it was a real treat watching them perform. I attended the Public Enemy show last night at the House of Blues in Cleveland. I drove 3 hours to do so and let me tell you it was worth every mile! A 2 hour set filled with favorites that never failed to disappoint. They kicked off the show with the first several songs from 'Fear of a Black Planet', and followed that up with pretty much every song that everyone wanted to hear. One thing that I loved was that they were backed up by an actual band. Yes, bass, drums, and a DJ. It totally rocked. What a great show. They really connect with their fans.

GREATEST CONCERT EVER!!! Chuck and Flav are the GREATEST! They did it all - the oldest, the newest, the greatest hits. And they really had a lot of fun with it. I'm a big fan of classic Hip Hop and I had a good time at this show! This was my second "ROC Summer Explosion". The previous year had a better line up, but this one was very good. Chubb Rock, Keith Murray, Das EFX, Brand Nubian, Kool Moe Dee, Scarface (but no Geto Boys), Naughty By Nature, Redman & Method Man and Public Enemy! Ed Lover and DJ Backspin provided entertainment between acts ...... which was sometimes longer than it should have been. This was a lonnnnnngggggg show. I like to see as many acts as possible, but sitting in the sun from 1:00 to 11:00 at night was draining, lol .... I actually skipped out on the end of Public Enemy's act which is the act I was most interested in. There were a few drops in music due to tech. difficulties too. Bonuses were - Kool Moe Dee brought out his old bandmates from the Treacherous Three and brought out one of the Funky Four, Meth & Redman brought out Street Lyfe, Chubb Rock & Kool Moe Dee spoke a lot of Hip Hop history. Most acts played their bigger hits .... if they do this next year, I hope they tighten up the schedule so there is less down time before acts.

The concert was so nice the weather was amazing, which made the show even more enjoyable. I wanted to give a quick shout out to Method Man he took the time out to take a quick photo with me and my cousin right before he went on stage even though he was getting rushed. Also wanted to say all of the artist were very friendly and willing to take time out to speak with and take photos. Last but not least met flav at the end of the night where he was in his zone listening to some music and can I say his new music is the bomb and I can't wait for the world to hear it.

The groups and rappers were great! They showed us that they stil have it. I enjoyed seeing them, especially Method Man and RedMan. Naughty by Nature were my second favorite act of the evening. What I WILL say is that I could've done without Ed Lover and his little sidekick (didn't catch his name). Ed Lover was the "MC" of the evening and also fancied himself a comedian. We had to sit and endure his sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and just overall rude "jokes" in between acts. I know that hip hop/rap, as a genre, can be mysoginystic and homophobic (which is not cool), but Ed Lover didn't need to go above and beyond to remind us of that with his tasteless "humor". I would've given this show a higher rating if it weren't for the unfortunate choice in MC.

This lineup was amazing! Legends and icons filled the stage. Now, like every concert I've ever been to, the schedule was way off of what was "expected". Artists that were scheduled to come on at 4pm, came on at 6:45.... stuff like that. But that is par for the course. The stadium was a great place for this event. Lots of room, open air, not too tight of security. I liked that. Even beer was reasonably priced ($7 for a 16oz heineken) Then there was the music. Each act that I saw (missed the first 3) sounded good. Love the acoustics at this venue. My biggest concern, and this was the same as when I saw Wu Tang a couple years ago in Rochester, was that the crowd lacked energy. Each artist seemed to stop the show to try and get the crowd amped up, however, to no avail. Mind you, I am 32, and I was one of the younger ones there, so understandably, the "older" crowd wasn't screaming and yelling and jumping around. This did have an effect on the artists. Method Man straight up stopped the show a couple times, urging the crowd to get into it, and [we] failed as a crowd. You could tell the artists didn't give it their all, or play a full set, because the crowd was lame. I was surprised to see Method Man and Redman come back to Rochester after the Wu Tang show a couple years ago. I'm glad they came back. They put on a good show, for what they did and got out of the crowd. Public Enemy was awesome! They brought a lot of energy (helps having Flavor Flav hyping the crowd) and their set was the best of the night. Played almost everything I wanted to hear, and minimized the newer stuff.

This show was great from beginning to end. The artists haven't missed a beat throughout the years. Great venue too, my first time seeing a show there.

he concert overall was very good. I think you should add a little more special ed and less Naughty by Nature and have KRS 1 stick to his old school he has so much to offer but no wants to here his newer stuff.

The concert started on time. Special Ed graced the stage with his hits first. He was followed by Mc Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, Krs-1, Naughty by Nature and Public Enemy. Most of the crowd stood for the entire show. I wished Krs -1 would have performed more of his hits. He seemed to be on a little rampage but in the climate of this country today I could understand. He performed 2 new songs and like many of his other songs they were very moving and thought provoking. Mc Lyte was very energetic she bought Giz on the stage-he didnt perform but she did an exercpt of his classic hit- Top Billin. Big Daddy Kane did his thing as usual-kept the crowd rockin. Naughty by Nature also did their thing. I enjoyed their set and their interaction with the crowd. Public Enemy was no doubt high energy some of the songs sounded similar but when they played the hits you knew... Flavor Flav was surprisingly interesting he pkayed instruments and interacted nicely with the crowd. Overrall it was a great show and I would go again if they came back.

Great show that started on time. And there wasn't a lot of wait time between artists, which is definitely a plus. I just wish there were more artist performing.

Chuck D. brought together a slew of classic hip-hop acts as openers. The other bands were hit and miss: Son of Bazerk and X-Clan were fun and excellent, Schoolly D seemed bored, and Wise Intelligent was neither. Public Enemy played a good mix of old stuff and new, and showed why they are legends. Age has not slowed them down a bit. They were great!

The entire show was fantastic. All the artists were on top of their game. Awesome Dre was exactly that, Wise intelligent threw it down, Monie Love was so radiant and entertaining; I love her. Brother J was Phenomenal and Public Enemy rocked the house.

Hip-Hop the way it is supposed to be. Chuck D would destroy any of the so-called MCs of today.

This concert took me back in time. Good seeing these hip hop legends still doing their thing. I wish PE came on a little earlier because by the time they hit the stage I was ready for bed. Can't hang like I used to but I enjoyed myself.

The groups were energized and they pushed the crowd to even better heights. This was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the mix of the crowd. I really enjoyed watching America evolve into the multicultural country it has become Public Enemy was at the forefront of this in the ninety's and the eighty's the crown was sixty forty split can even that was amazing because you wouldn't know never listen to them it was a great time I do it again I need to go. This is the America I always hope to see and be a part of and now it's here Thank You

This was a fantastic event, very positive and incredibly well-organized. There was NO waiting between acts\u2014each act came out, played for 30 minutes or so, and the next act came on right away, with Public Enemy's amazing Chuck D introducing the acts and providing historical context. I was afraid it might be overly "nostalgic" but it wasn't\u2014it felt fresh and contemporary and just had a very positive, community-oriented vibe w/out sidestepping difficult political/social issues. Public Enemy brought down the house as the headliner with an amazing, high-energy, louder-than-a-bomb performance. 1980's hip hop heads, you MUST go, and bring some yunguns along for an unforgettable night!

That was a great show to be able to watch, i love that hip hop is alive and well, CLASSIC not old school. I'm glad that there are still artist that undertand the importance of being mature and well rounded. Chuck D is an amazing MC, the way he hosted the show and showed the local talent so much love was one of the best feeling I got this year at a show. big ups

Left before Public Enemy came on for 2 reasons. First, and most importantly, with the exception of Wise Intelligent and arguably Awesome Dre, the sets were terrible. Most of these guys are just too old and either their voices are gone or they just don't have the energy to perform any more. Thought Son of Beserk was going to keel over. Schooly D sounded silly at whatever age he is and uses so much reverb you couldn't hear the lyrics. There was only one Leader of the New School there who's voice was failing and there was no Charlie Brown. The DJ that filled in to rap with him had a very grating voice. Secondly, we just didn't have the patience for the endless talking in between sets by Chuck D either promoting the social media sites of the all the acts or saying how great the old days used to be or else the acts making mindless inside references about back in the day. Truly unintelligible, boring and endless talk, that interrupted any flow the show might have salvaged. We were definitely not the only ones streaming out of there early.

Man it was so good to see PE all back together and the did there thing. Chuck's voice was going out but he did not quit and apologized several times for it. He even signed any item from any body who wanted him to for not being at his best. Flava actually had his back and carried the show. I wish Griff was more into it he seemed tired. All in all this is a must see if you are a PE fan from back in the day full of energy for brotha's in their 50's.

I bought these tickets b/c my husband is a long time PE fan. We have been married for 18 yrs and I took him as an anniversary gift. He got his teeshirt and he got to see Chuck D! It was what I expected from PE. They maintained to their hip hop roots and message of unity was the glue to the show. Flav was there! He was true to who I thought he would be as a performer and person. They are a humble but POWERFUL group of men. I sweated out my natural hair in the Regency and It was worth the smile my husband had on his face. PE represent what black men are still fighting to acheive and form what I saw at the Regency many men,of all nationalities, look to PE for confirmation

Chuck D admitted they were going to do a "loose show" and that's what was delivered. It was kind of a review of their hits mixed in with a giant jam session. Their guitarist, who is emensly talented, got more guitar solos than an Ozzy concert. Kind of odd for a rap show, but talented people are fun to watch any way. DJ Lord tore it up and threw down some great beats for the duration of the show - big props to him. The great music was interrupted quite a bit with these improvised jam sessions that, unfortunately, didnt include any freestyle rapping. Certainly entertaining, but I do wish they had gotten a little deeper into their extensive library. In the end, Chuck D still has it - a monster up front with a booming voice that never waivers. Flav is as energetic as he was back in the day (this is the 5th time ive seen PE), but pushed his new book ("on sale in the back!" x 100) a little too hard. This wasnt a trade show, after all. Griff and the S1Ws did their thing. Even with the loose format (and there's no guarantee they will repeat it at other venues), PE is a force to be reckoned with. Anyone who's not seen them in concert should definately go.

The sound was really awful at the Regency. It felt like the music was tearing a hole in my ears. There was waaay too much treble and it sounded like a girl to my right was singing lyrics to every song. There was no girl. It was just the hissing of the speakers that was bugging me all night. Of course the show was great, although Flavor Flav didn't make an appearance for the first 15 minutes after Chuck D came on stage. Instead, Professor Griff acted as his stand in for the first few songs. I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure that Flavor Flav got tied up in a book promotion event prior to the show. I was seriously thinking of walking out and demanding my money back just before he came on stage. I saw them in 2008 in Europe, and a lot of the act was the same. Of course, you wouldn't expect much different from a group that hasn't released anything new for years. Chuck D did push-ups. Flavor Flav lip-synched "Cold Lampin" and "911 is a Joke" (hasn't he learned the lyrics by now?) There were S1W's on stage doing their military saluting choreography routine. If you haven't seen them before, they are definitely a must see. The live band is great. Chuck and Flav are greatly entertaining. Every song is a classic.

San Francisco had not been rocked like that since the last big earthquake!!! Public Enemy's show was ill. They definitely owned that stage, and sure knew how to entertain the crowd. For a few hours, I was stuck in "old school mode" and I loved it!!!! Thanks again P.E.!!

A decent, but not exceptional, set. Spent a lot of time on stage chatter and the mix was really really bass heavy, making some of their great lyrics hard to make out.
