The Black Keys

The Black Keys

Guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney make up the blues rock powerhouse that is The Black Keys. The duo has come a long way from their early days recording in an Akron, Ohio, basement to their current ability to sell out tickets to a Madison Square Garden concert in just 15 minutes. After their 2002 debut dubbed “The Big Come Up,” The Black Keys developed an underground following which they satiated with intimate tours and new releases every couple years. The 2010 unveiling of “Brothers” marked the start of their commercial success, as tracks like “Howlin’ for You” and “Tighten Up” received regular rotation on Top 40 stations nationwide.

The Black Keys were awesome!!! My only complaint is that I was stuck in the back of the Riv and couldn't see the band:( There should at least be a flat screen in the back, by the bar.

Had been waiting to see this band for some time, and they did not disappoint! Was very pleased to see just the two of them, no special guests, as wanted to hear that very distinctive sound live. They performed quite a few tunes from thickfreakness, which pleased me no end as that's my favorite album so far. The energy level of Auerbach and Carney was astounding--I think they played straight for about an hour and 20 minutes, with only seconds for pauses. Auerbach does not stop moving. When they slow down for a riff or chord change, the audience would immediately burst into applause, feeding the energy back. They honored the audience with two encores, and simply gave a fabulous show. My only disappointment was that Auerbach's vocals were sometimes difficult to hear, and he has such an awesome blues voice. Am hoping that problem gets corrected for future performances!

Once again Chicago has proven itself as the premiere city in America to showcase bands of all kinds. No city continues to support music better than Chicago as proven here with two sold out shows by the Black Keys. One on NYE, the other on New Year's Day. The Keys threw down on 1/1/10 and the crowd was very appreciative of their efforts. After hearing the Keys would be releasing a new album in early 2010 I was surprised that they did not test any of the new material. Dan Auerbach is one of the most talented guitar players around....

Opening band the Violators were ok. Kinda to hippy for me. Could be good in the future kinda reminded me of My Morning Jacket. Black Keys killed. Great show. Very sonic for a two piece. As you can imagine the guitar tones were killing with fuzz. Phenomenal. Would go see them again for sure.

I drove from Ohio and I must say I am soo glad I did. Had a wonderful time, The Black Keys always bring the house down. I thought the show I seen In Covington, Ky was thier best show ever, but I digress this show tops it by far. They played every song I absolutely had to hear and more. As long as I can drive to the show in 1 day I'll be there to see The Black Keys. Hands down the best concert of my life.

I've seen the keys several times and it is always a great experience. They just get up on stage and rock out. I thought last night's show was short. The Keys took the stage around 11:30pm and were off by 12:30am. I was really hoping they would start off our new year's with a sneak peak at a new song, but they stuck to their usual playlist. Aside from being short and nothing new, they still gave everyone a great night. My only real complaint was with the fans at the show. By far the worst group of people to stand next to at a show. Never have I had such a bad experience with fans.

The show sucked! The band did not even play for an hour. For the price of the tickets, I would have expected a 1 1/2 hour to 2 hour show. I don't plan on ever seeing The Black Keys again. What a disappointing New Year's Eve show.

I know it was a new years eve show but doors opened at 10, then NO ONE played until after 11. The set seemed very short compared to when my friends who were with me saw them at a festival in the summer and said they did a two hour set. If you include the New Year countdown and excitement the set was only an hour and 30 min. They themselves are amazing musicians and a powerhouse live, they deserve a full dance floor for their shows though than the rivera.

I've seen the Black Keys four times now and last night was awesome. They played all their hits and sounded GREAT. Dan was amazing as usual and Patrick beat his drum kit with his usual passion. It was kinda funny to watch Dan avoid the big balloons that dropped at midnight...you could see that he had his eyes on them a few times as a big one came right at him. "I got Mine" was particularly rocking last night, not sure why. Dan's distorted guitar sound was pretty biting last night. Loved it.

I bought tickets with the sole intention of seeing the Black Keys cuz they rock my socks off. Between the variety of vendors, the locally microbrewed beer and the intimate set up, I couldn't help but feel that I had found the "diamond in the rough" of the summer. The keys performed a fantastic show in a beautifully unique venue. I will be back again!

Forecastle this year was set up great. I had a blast. There was enough room to move around fairly easily, given the small space it was in. I started the day seeing Cage, the elephant. They are from Kentucky and put on a great show. After that we saw the Whigs. They put on a pretty good show considering I have never heard of them. The set that Pretty Lights did was amazing. They had people dancing like crazy. Best of all were the Keys. They played a really good set. Most of the music they played came from the album Magic Potion. All in all, I cant wait for next year to see what forecastle has in store.

The Black Keys have never disappointed me live. They were great. Sound was fantastic and they play a great variety of their music, new and old. St. Vincent left a lot to be desired. Interesting to watch, but I would never listen to or purchase their music. Not a style that appeals to me (personal preference). Though it would have been nice to have a better opening act, especially at 90+ per ticket, I would go again because the Black Keys are that good live.

Being one of my favorite bands from over the years, I have truly enjoyed every album they have put out. From the garage days of "The Big Come Up" to the latest psychedelic "Turn Blue", The Black Keys have never let me down. This being the second time I have seen them (both times being front row GA) I can honestly say they are electric live. There's just something about being 20 feet away from the band that makes it an entirely different experience. While Dan and Pat only played 4 songs from "Turn Blue" I was okay with that, as most of the album has a more mellow feel. The majority of the songs actually came from "El Camino" and they even played the cover "Leavin' Trunk" off of their first album which was very cool. The concert was extremely high energy and Dan's guitar riffs were absolutely perfect. I would definitely recommend seeing these guys live. It's amazing the sound Dan and Pat can put out.

I bought tickets as an early Christmas gift for my hubby. He told me "This is the best gift ever". We had FLR GA tickets and were able to get right up to the gate in front of the stage. My husband told me a while back that The Black Keys were his favorite band and when I saw they were coming to Richmond I immediately bought tickets. This band puts out the most amazing sound. At the end of the concert Dan threw out his guitar pic and I caught it. My hubby's face was priceless. I will put it in a shadow box along with the tickets and the CD insert. This will be an additional gift. We love the Black Keys. Hope to see them again soon.

Wow! What a show! Thankfully chose general admission! So close! I was worried that they'd play mostly or only newer songs, but holy goodness, they actually only skipped one of my favorites! Sound was perfect, felt through my chest, like any good venue, but not so loud that my ears were messed up the next day. Thanks so much for a hugely memorable night! Woooo! On a side note, omg traffic at the maverik center. We didn't even get off the freeway exit before we hit it, luckily it only made us miss a bit of the opener, but would have been longer if we didn't say ef it and parked at an I HOP down the street.

This was my seventh time seeing The Black Keys, and they didn't disappoint. Although, being a super fan, it was impossible for them to play every song that I desired but they still know how to bring that sweet blues. I don't care for the venue though. The Oracle is a typical stadium that is overly corporate, and cold. The security was similar to an airport, going through metal detectors and having to place your wallet and keys in a separate dish. The lines for drinks were long, and cost nearly $12 a piece. But despite the venue the Keys were an excellent show, and i will see them again, even if I have to go to the Oracle

The Black Keys and Jake Bugg at The Forum November 6, 2014 The Black Keys killed it last night in Los Angeles playing to a completely packed crowd at the Forum on their Torn Blue tour. Playing a solid 18 song set and finishing with 3 more in an encore, they more than delivered. Opener Jake Bugg got things going with an incredibly powerful set showcasing this young artist s talent for belting out some strong vocals and quick guitar skills. Bugg played some songs from his first album ,Jake Bugg, such as Seen it All , my personal favorite Two Fingers and saved his biggest hit Lightning Bolt for the end. He mixed in some new music he has been working on and songs from his second album Shangri La and changed up some of his originals with longer and slower introductions and drawn out guitar riffs. I can t wait to see what Bugg s future holds as he has come a long ways from when I saw him playing at the SD House of Blues last year where he nervously took the stage and played for a much smaller crowd than the huge stadium that was filling up for headliner, The Black Keys. A hypnotic swirl of black and white appeared on the many screens along the stage and a voice commanded the audience to look in and get lost before the show started. The audience was ecstatic and screaming when Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney took the stage. The duo was joined by touring artists John Wood and Richard Swift who helped the Keys amplify their tunes to the next level. They started their set with Dead and Gone and went into Next Girl . Some highlights from the show were when the band went into Strange Times from their 2008 album Attack & Release and when they did a cover of Edwyn Collins Girl Like You. They brought a new element of raw energy and power to the song, and Auerbach s vocals rivaled the smooth sound that Collins put out in the original, made popular in the movie Empire Records. While I wished they had played more of their older music and some more of the slower tracks off of their album Brothers, it was still an incredible show and the encore set that included their hit Little Black Submarine satisfied my craving for a slow and soulful song. The stage took on black and white lights and the floating screens behind the band projected black and white footage of Auerbach singing and close ups of the instrumentals. Everyone sang along and left the Forum feeling stoked on the night of incredible music that had just happened. The Black Keys Torn Blue tour continues with a show in San Diego this weekend at the Viejas Arena

The band was tight, the crowd was happy. I guess it was just that the audience was so homogeneous. Or rather, uniformly made up of people I probably wouldn't want to hang out with. I also found the band blander than I thought they would be. I went fully prepared to have my face melted all the way off, but instead it was like listening to the radio. I like my rock dirty, ugly, sexy and sweaty. The Black Keys are no longer that band, if they ever were. It's kind of like...the band and their audience were clearly repping hard for post-Bloomberg New York. Loud, enthusiastic, professional and boring as fuck.

This was my second time seeing The Black Keys live. First time I saw them in Atlantic City and they were amazing, but nothing can compare to the show they put on in Brooklyn the other day. Absolutely mind blowing. They sound great in the studio but even better live. And they played all of the songs I wanted them to, like "Same Old Thing" and "Gotta Get Away". I wish they played "Sinister Kid" but the set list was phenomenal. The talent and musicianship they displayed was out of this world and just made me appreciate their music even more. And the visual show that accompanied the music was stellar and just got better and better as the show went on. I would recommend seeing them live to anyone and everyone. The Black Keys are one of the best live bands out there and you'd only be hurting yourself if you passed on an opportunity to see them live.

The concert started out with the best, most lively opener anyone could have asked for - Cage the Elephant. Whether or not I knew the words to their songs, I was 100% engaged in their performance which involved the perfect amount of crowd surfing and guitar solos. Then for the main attraction, The Black Keys. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney put on an absolutely fantastic show. They sound just as good live as in the studio. Auerbach played plenty of passionate, bluesy solos throughout the concert. The backdrop started as a curtain projection, but dropped to reveal an arrangement of lights which was a very climactic part of the show. The two man band played a variety of songs from their two previous releases, "El Camino" and "Brothers," threw in a couple throwbacks from their early albums, and, of course, played the singles from their new album "Turn Blue." Being only a few places from the front down on the floor made my experience 100 times more amazing. If you are a Black Keys fan, you need to do everything in your power to see these guys in the flesh, it is truly something everyone should experience.

Cage the Elephant stormed the stage with tons of energy and played just about every hit from their albums. It made for a wonderful show. The Black Keys played a lot of older songs and only featured a few from their new album "Turn Blue". They played the infamous hit "Gold on the Ceiling" and some stellar classics from older albums. When they returned for the encore they came back on without their additional members and played a set, just the two of them. Altogether a great show!

Cage the Elephant set the tone for the night. They let loose some fast paced, come-at-you-hard rock hits like "In One Ear," "Shake Me Down," "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked," and "Back Against The Wall !!!" It didn't take long for the party to really get going with the lead singer crowd surfing and cool light shows! Cage even played some slower songs like "Take It Or Leave It" and "Cigarette Daydreams." Cage played for about 45 minutes, starting right at 8PM and ending at 8:45PM; they played 10 songs. After an intermission to allow Cage to get their gig off stage and let The Black Keys to setup, the Keys started playing some time between 9:15PM and 9:30PM and played for roughly an hour and a half, ending at 11PM. They started with "Dead And Gone" and just kept the blues rock anthems coming. They also kept the crowd's blood pumping because you just can't help but move to their songs, whether that means just tapping a foot to the beat or dancing the night away. Cage and Keys played a good variety of their classics hits and new rock pleasures. The Keys played newer songs like "Gold On The Ceiling," "Next Girl," "Run Right Back," and "Too Afraid To Love You." They played some old classics like "Same Old Thing" and "Leavin' Trunk." New material didn't come until half way through the setlist. The "Turn Blue" songs were "Gotta Get Away," "Fever," and "Turn Blue." The coolest songs of the night were the ones where the crowd sang along including "Tighten Up" and "Little Black Submarines." Dan's (Black Keys singer) voice was great, almost studio-like. Patrick the drummer was amazing. The Keys even played an encore and did a cover of Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You." Overall it was an amazing show!

I'm not going to lie, I fell in love with the fuzzed-out stripped-down 2 piece iteration of the Black Keys and was fortunate enough to see them in that configuration a few times. I catch them every time they come through Michigan and they sounded tighter and better than ever. Last time they came through the Joe Louis Arena, I was skeptical about how they'd sound in such a large venue, but it sounded just fine. I was further skeptical about their performance because some of the recent live videos I've seen, it seemed like Dan and Pat couldn't lock in together and were wildly shifting tempos between verses and choruses. This time, they sounded more rehearsed, more confident, and are starting to tailor their gigs to these larger settings with some improv jam sessions and song selection that works with the venue. There were no huge swings in tempos within songs which was a huge relief. Having seen Dan Johnson do a rig rundown of Auerbach's gear that morning really helped me focus on the performance and not worry about geeking out over what guitars and gear Dan was using the whole night. The only complaint I had was that I didn't feel the cymbals were pushed hard enough in the mix. They seemed a little buried. Too Afraid To Love You worked REALLY well in this setting. I was excited they played Run Right Back, Strange Times, and She's Long Gone. The Segar cover was a great left field move. Overall it was a fantastic performance and everyone in our group had a blast!

Cage the Elephant was great. Loved their show. Would liked to have had them on for a bit longer or have them join in with the keys for a song. Black Keys were great. A lot of young people did not get some of the songs but they rocked out anyway.

I'll start off by saying, I had only a few tunes of the bands that I really listened to. But when Dan Auerbach first strummed that guitar, my playlist was forever changed. I was mesmerized by the pure sound of rock and roll resonating from the stage; it was magical. The crowd was on their feet for what seemed like the entire show. Great night, as well as one kick-ass band!

I LOVE The Black Keys. They are our Akron boys that are so amazing!!!! I love that the encore was just Pat and Dan. Back to the roots. Yes! Can't wait till the next show! They are so talented. Plus, Cage the Elephant Rawked!!! They will be headlining soon. Great energy. Nick knows how to play that guitar. The venue was great. Our seats were perfect. LOVED THE WHOLE SHOW!!!! Thanks for a great night.

We were sixth in line and waited out in the cold for close to 3 and a half hours, but for what we experienced, I would have waited twice that amount! Albert Hammond Jr, the opener, was brilliant. This was the fourth time I'd seen him in the last 6 months and he still puts on an amazing show. If he was playing again soon, I would go see him a 5th time with no hesitation. The Black Keys themselves absolutely killed it! The sound in the venue was amazing, and I've been to quite a few. If you haven't gotten a chance to see these guys live, jump on the soonest chance you get! They are definitely not a band to miss! 10/10 show.

This was the first time I ever had pit passes at The Meadows, the experience of being that close to the stage was awesome. The sound quality was really, really excellent, even for being that close. I normally bring special earplugs for concerts, I didn't even need them for this show. As for the show itself, honestly I was a bit let down. I had fun, but I guess I expected more from The Black Keys. I felt like they just got on stage, got through their set list, and then wanted to go home. Little to no interaction with the crowd other than "hey guys, lets have a great time" with very low enthusiasm. I have experienced much smaller bands at smaller venues with ten times the energy of these guys! I know the two guys in the back are hired just for the tour, but c'mon - they were statues on stage, they almost appeared nervous. At points I felt like I was listening to one long drawn out song. The production, lighting, effects were amazing. I was so happy to experience this show from the pit, I just wish I could get pit tickets for a higher energy, more engaging band.

The venue was ideal and The Black Keys were primal rock and roll at its best. SRO but no one would have been seated anyway.

I went to see the Black Keys in Atlanta back in May. They did everything right, but the sound system there was garbage. So glad I got to catch an amazing show before the tour ended. The Simpsonville venue was perfect. The lighting and the music came together majestically. Dan and Patrick really know rock n roll. I am a true fan now

Although it rained a bit, the Flaming Lips and Black Keys concert was phenomenal. Both bands had great stage presence and sounded just like their records. The sound crew also did well as the music was clear and loud enough, despite one minor sound glitch during the Black Keys performance. Overall I'd definitely recommend buying tickets for this tour, and also for the venue. Yay!

If you aren't a fan of The Black Keys, I hope it's simply because you have never heard their music because once you have, you can't help but become addicted. This show was seriously the best concert I've ever been to. You can't help but get caught up in the energy Dan and Patrick put off and you find yourself lost in every song. My only complaint is that the show ended.

Great band to see live . They are so relaxed but brought out a lot of energy from the crowd. Not everyday when you can say a band sounds just as good live as their studio albums do . A little late but it was worth the wait. The opening was amazing too.

... with The Flaming Lips, who stole the show visually with a creative stage set-up. Leader Wayne Coyne stood high on an elevated pedestal with snake-ish tubes that came down from his mic and weaved across the entire stage and went back up and hung behind him. In these tubes were orbs of glittery light that traveled through them, corresponding with the music. Very trippy, especially with the screens behind them adding all kinds of bizarre images. He was also holding a plastic baby doll and treating it as if was real, playing nosies with it and all. But they did cover David Bowie's "Heroes" so, I can deal with the strangeness. The Keys, however, delivered that good ole rock show, as they do. Opening with "Howlin' for You", they had a lot of ground to cover, what with 7 original albums. Cover ground they did with deep cuts and the radio hits most of us know. I haven't been to Lakewood in several years and forgot how the bass drum can vibrate your heart in your chest like being brought back to life by a defibrillator in the E.R. After a few tunes, they cut themselves down to the original duo to jam on some older tunes which was pretty cool. Muddling through some songs, they completely ripped it up on "Your Touch". They also had huge screens behind them cut into many different squares for a variety of angles on the band. For the encore, a moon-sized disco ball was raised and Dan busted out his best falsetto for "Everlasting Light". "I Got Mine" brought the night to a close and the house music started back, appropriately, with Zeppelin's "Ramble On".

Two amazingly talented bands did not disappoint. The overall experience was worth the dice from Memphis. Both bands were in great form, and excepting a few over-served college kids the crowd was electrified. I can't wait for the opportunity to see either the Lips or the Keys again.

The Black Keys are absolutely incredible live. I have seen them live twice and both times they were awesome. I have been to too many concerts to count, but they rank right up there at the top. They have a great stage presence and the light show is just as good as the music. Bottom line, The Black Keys need to be at the top of your concert bucket list. The Joint at The Hardrock Hotel is such a cool venue. It's a 4,000 seat venue so it's pretty intimate. It almost feels like you are on stage with the band. Definitely one if the cooler venues I've been to.

Far exceeded my expectations! I love there music from their album, but watching these guys play live is just incredible. I have been to a lot of concerts and I have to say the Black Keys are my new favorites for not only music and lyrics but there stage presences is excellent. Watching Dan go back to his amps to get his re verb cooking in his guitar and then come out and just lay down an epic rift is beyond goose bump. Watching Dan play it is hard to remember to look at Patrick who simply decimates his drum set he plays so hard, his whole setup shakes around. I have been to The Joint three times and it is a nice little venue, especially if you get there early and get up close to the stage, there is no crowd rush and it is quite comfortable and cool. There were assigned seats up close for Santana when I went but not for the Black Keys or the Foo Fighters, which were standing in GA.

Teagan and Sarah play very cool and sing really nice. I didn't know many song of them but I sure will follow then after seeing their performance. Now the black keys are a live band for sure they sound as good as they do on there records.very very energetic even with slower songs. Sound was perfect, and light show was awesome. also the videos they put on the screen were really cool. except for "I got mine", they played ask their best songs, and played for a very fair time. More than expected personally. I was a fan of the black keys before but after this show I will follow them forever

Seriously has been the best concert I've been to in forever! I've been a fan of the Black Keys for a few years an it was the first time I got to see them and I was not disappointed. I loved how when it was time for them to stand alone one guitar, an the drums they were able to rock the hell out of the Pan Am in Las Cruses. I took my boyfriend who only went to support me an wasn't so much of a fan, well he walked out totally impressed and found new respect for the Keys. I only wish they kept on playing all night! Thank you so much I had an awesome time, and so did the thousands in attendance!
