Van Morrison

Van Morrison

With a catalog of songs that reaches back 50 years, Van Morrison always delivers a concert that’s impossible to predict  for his many ticket buyers. The iconic Northern Ireland native has, of course, recorded classic albums like Moondance and Astral Weeks, and timeless singles like "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and "Wild Night." But he's released well over 30 albums during the course of his career, building a repertoire that veers from Celtic music to folk to blues to covers of standards. His focus on any given night could switch on the dime as he follows his muse wherever it takes him.

Fortunate to see this man often and his voice has shown no sign of aging and his gigs are hugely entertaining with a grand mix of classics covers and newer material If you re going just for Brown Eyed Girl, stay home. He s wayyyyyyy more than that though you MAY get it anyway No banter, prompt start \u2014 allstar brilliant backing band of veterans Miss at your peril

Van Morrison aroused a euphoric feeling at Caesars Palace on Saturday night as he opened the concert right on time with his big hit Moondance. He rocked The Colosseum at Caesars Palace with his distinctive soulful voice along with the incredible musicians in his band; as he sang song after song non-stop played the saxophone and the harmonica for about 2 hours. Not bad for someone that is 72 years old! My husband and I loved every minute of Van Morrison s performance. We could not stop dancing in our awesome seats located in the Orchestra Section with an incredible view of the performance. This was a bucket list artist concert for us! My only disappointment was that he did not sing "Bright Side of the Road" but he did perform "Have I Told You Lately." We are overjoyed that we got to see Van Morrison perform live and up front. It was totally worth the expensive price of the concert tickets. Viva Las Vegas!

I was really disappointed in the show. There was something wrong with the sound. For the first 30 minutes of the show, some sound guy was running around the stage, the musicians were being moved around and it was distracting. Van seemed to be p***ed off, too. The concert started late, ended early. Although Astral Weeks music was good, he only played 2 oldies but goodies. I regret that I paid so much for the concert.

I am a huge Van Morrison fan but the show last night in DC stunk! Joyless, lifeless, unprofessional. Just because Van was unhappy with the stage manager doesn't mean he should take it out on the audience by cutting the show short. Waste of $150. Never again.

The show was just too short, period. The venue, DAR Consitution Hall, definitely performs it's part in creating the 'every-seat-is-a-good-seat' romantic setting, but I ended up leaving feeling let down. This is the second time I have bought tickets to see someone who I feel won't be around too much longer, and didn't hesitate to pay the price. The overall vibe, energy, just wasn't there. I feel that it (energy) is extemely a good part responsible of the entertainer, not just the crowd. Maybe DAR just doesn't do it for me, or maybe I caught Van just too late in his career. I'll still carry the many life memories associated with his music, but this one won't be there. Leaving the show feeling like that was like being given a flat beer and feeling obligated to drink it.

If you go to see Van Morrison do not expect him to talk. He goes on stage to play and he did just that. His music was spot on. The price of the tickets was steep, but the venue was perfect.

For various reasons I had never been to a Van Morrison concert; he doesn't come around a lot, I was out of town, and so on. This put him number one on my must see concert list before it's too late. To prepare I ran out and bought his "Astral Weeks" CD to add to my Morrison collection, knowing he would be playing a lot of music from it in his concert. I was excited because there's not a bad seat at DAR Constitution Hall. Too bad the concert ever began. I had no idea he would force feed an hour and twenty minutes of Astral and other tunes the crowd did not come to hear before finally playing 'Brown Eyed Girl.' Next he mailed in 'Gloria' and after finally getting the crowd to their feet the legend walked off stage with no thank you or good-bye. No 'Moondance,' 'Domino,' 'Wavelength,' or 'Wild Night.' I've read the story of how Morrison is bitter about his early music ownership being "stolen" but to keep loyal fans he may want to rise above the issue. Throughout the concert he pouted and argued about the sound to the helpless crew, never once acknowledging his loyal audience. Well, I'm one loyal fan he's lost. Take me to a John Prine concert over Van Morrison any day of the week.

While the old guy still can play, he failed to reach the audience by playing an hour and half of obscure songs few knew and hitting only two standards -- Browned Girl and Gloria -- at the end of his 1:45 hour set. For the price he is charging, $150 for the back row, upper deck, he should be more approachable to his audience and give them what they came to hear -- some of the highlights of a fabulous career.

Saw Van Morrison last night in DC, he is a powerful artist with a still stunning voice, but... no encore!!!!!! WHo doesn't do an encore???? I hope this is not a new pattern for concerts, the encore is like the artist's tribute to his audience. Still and all I would recommend seeing him he is an extraordinary artist, unfortuantely with an ego to match.

Music was great but too much stage drama between Van and his stage manager, having to more the drum set over 6 inches mid show. I've heard he doesn't enter act with the audience ,but no greeting or thank you to the crowd seems unprofessional to fans paying $350.00 a ticket. Also no encore but his music and voice sounded great and did not disappoint.

The show was a disappointment. The concert consisted of all new stuff and then he closed with a spiritless version of Brown-Eyed Girl. After that, despite a very polite audience who cried out for an encore, there was none. In fact, not once did he even acknowledged the audience. Perhaps that is his style, I don't know, but what I hoped for was some sort of connection between this great musician and the audience, and to hear at least a few classics. I paid over $500 for two seats and a rare opportunity to see Van Morrison perform, and feel let down. Save your time and money and just download his music.

VM-came out Thursday night with the same loveable voice you'd be expecting, however his attitude toward the audience was far from warm, in fact I don't think he knew we were even there watching him at $100+ a ticket. I recently attended the Wolf Trap Joe Cocker concert, another harsh, musty voice but the exception was you could understand him and he connected and acknowledged his audience, VM couldn't care less. When was the last time you spent $100+ for a concert and the performer/group did not come out for at least one encore? I will always like VM for what he has produced, but would not recommend to anyone, including his best friend, to see him live!

My wife and I just saw Van Morrison at the Wang Center in Boston on July 4th. As advertised, we were expecting a combination of his new work along with some of the popular selections from his older material. Much to the dismay of many fans, all he did was his accoustic new material. He did not perfom one of his older and more popular songs. My wife, a huge fan, was so dissapointed! The lady directly in front of me actually boo'd him at the end of the concert. There were a lot of very disappointed people that paid big $$ to see him. So, if you want to hear any of his older work, save your hard earned money - you will be disappointed!!

Based on the Los Angeles Times article on Van Morrison published prior to this concert, I knew not to expect too much. However I did expect more than what the concert-goers received. The audience was very subdued and only reacted/came alive to his hit songs (which were few and far between). Even the hit songs where sung on the bluesy/jazzy side. While Van Morrison came on stage at 9:00 pm, I noticed folks leaving in droves by 10:00 pm.

Van Morrison's set at the Hollywood Bowl proved once again that he is one of the greatest singers and songwriters in music history. He nailed song after song and his incredible voice, remarkably, showed little fall off. He also dueted wonderfully with opening act Tom Jones, demonstrating his longtime commitment to classic rhythm and blues. There were, however, some clear weaknesses in his set that kept the evening from being a total success. First, there was Van's sax playing. While he has always had top horn players on his albums, his own playing is average at best. His tone is squawky, his improvising pedestrian. Yet he seemed to pick up the horn on about half of his numbers. Another problem was the band which, while competent and professional, was hardly inspired. It was also skimpy. I have personally seen Van a half dozen times and he usually shows with an interesting array of instruments, often including strings, three horns and three back up singers. At the Bowl, however, he had four pieces (including drummer) total, plus himself and one back up who barely sang. The keyboard player doubled on organ and piano and also played trumpet. There was, somehow, a sense of economy to the group, and not the good kind. Van's stage presence has never been a strength and at this point in his career, it has truly bottomed out.He says nothing to the audience, stands in one place wearing sunglasses, a dark suit and the kind of hat usually seen on the Early Bird Special crowd at Du-par's. C'mon, Van! Step that up! Finally, and inexplicably given the enthusiastic crowd, Van seemed unable to generate any real excitement in the house. His long improvised number probably lasted twenty minutes and should have set the crowd on fire. Yet Van was so deeply into his own head that it never took off in that regard. What should have been a roar when he walked off stage still singing, wound up being polite applause. Van is 71 and this is probably how it's going to be from now on. He can still deliver and for long time fans, any chance to see him should not be missed. For me, however, I would rather check him out in a smaller venue, where he would be more inclined to make the evening just a little more personal, for him, and for us.

Tom Jones was awesome and Van Morrison was fabulous. We had the tickets for along time and looked forward to Van Morrison. I wasn't a big Tom Jones fan, but he wowed me and I'm a fan now. The bad part: face value for these tickets in the garden box was over 600.00, but we thought we would splurge... Unfortunately, the disrespectful drunk girls in the box next to us, talked loudly through most of the concert until they were joined by another couple: equally drunk. Falling on each other, woo-hooing, touching my husband, high-fiving everyone that passed by. Ruined our night. My husband said you can't argue with drunks. The people in our box flew in from Minnesota. We felt really bad for them. As we were leaving, going down the cement stairs to the tunnel, the wife slipped and grabbed my arm, almost taking me down. I remarked that she might want to consider drinking less the next time so EVERYONE could enjoy the concert; whereby she retorted loudly- LAME, YOU'RE LAME This isn't the first time we've experienced inconsiderate people. Any suggestions?

At first, I was surprised that these two performers were matched up together. However, Tom Jones was great. At 77 years old, he sounded quite good. It was a pleasant surprise. In fact, I may have enjoyed his performance more than Van Morrison's, which is the artist I intended to see. Van Morrison sounded a bit rough. At 71 years old, he mumbled more of his lyrics, than sang them. I think he may have been getting sick, or getting over "something," as I saw him coughing, and pulling his shirt closed over this throat (vocal chords). I was a bit disappointed in his part of the show. Lastly, and this has nothing to do with Ticketmaster nor the Hollywood Bowl, but there were four women sitting behind us, that NEVER stopped talking the entire show. Although they were asked nicely, and more rudely too, they still kept talking. THAT made my enjoyment of the show, altered.

We were quite excited to finally see Van Morrison in concert. We've been fans for a long time. Van has some great songs, but in this show he tended to jazz up the familiar classics (as we knew he would), and that tended to make them all sound more or less the same. On a few numbers he stretched them out with ad-libbed nonsense lyrics (but sung with utter earnestness...) that became boring after a while. We joined many, many people leaving before his set was over. Van seemed to be there to indulge himself, not to entertain the audience. Disappointing. On the other hand, I would never have paid to see Tom Jones. But he came out rocking -- hard! And he continued to sing with joy and emotion. Van has the better songs, but Tom is far and away the better ENTERTAINER. Great Tom Jones show. Just okay Van show.

I'm not a Tom Jones fan but you have to admit...he brings it. Van Morrison was incredible. While The Stones were in the desert doing the set list they do every time, Van changes most of his every night and tweaks what he does do so that you never know what you're going to hear or how you're going to hear it. If you want to entertained, buy his albums. If you want to watch an artist...See him live. I hope to see a live performance with a huge band some day yet, what he did with a five piece band was amazing. I saw him at Madison Sq Garden for his Astral Weeks tour a few years back and this was so much better. Classic Van Morrison...The Artist.

Van came onstage promptly at 8pm and playing a solid 90-minute set. As a long-time fan, who has seen him rock intimate nightclubs to the big stage, I feel blessed to see him still touring. His vocals were top vibrato, and this night he performed a wide range of hits and lesser known gems. The snazzy fedora and soft lighting made a memento. The downside, his guitarist was shredding all night, but was turned in towards Van and the band, so you could not see his virtuosity. The large projector screens were blurry, and the cameraman had difficulty keeping up with the solos and band member peaks. Take 2 or 3 HD cameramen on stage circling, and the video experience could have been top-notch. I surmise Van dictated who would be on the stage and how they were situated. As for the 8pm alcohol cutoff, I'm sure that took many by surprise. Thank goodness I was on the email notification list and enjoyed some wine before arrival. Again, I assume since Van's last show was at Chastain (where many are absorbed by their shrimp and champagne) he wanted to be the center of attention.

Don't get me wrong. Musicians, well they don't come better than Van the Man. OK, sound was off by way of his unaccompanied brief bursts of utterances. I do not know what wording to use. It sounded like yelps. I found it piercing, actually hurt my ears, and hurt my skin. And no i am not tripping! that is where the sound could have been worked out somewhat better. Also the songs played were not consistently the best. Given the time restrictions limiting what was played, a few more I would have liked to hear. Astral Weeks , ahhh. But al in all, Hey! It was Van Morrison, even from a distance, great o see and hear him. The band was fabulous. The one upbeat jazzy piece ...maybe 3 or 4 works from the last was most excellent....

I was so excited to see this legend in concert. Perhaps I should have done a little more homework about Van Morrison before the show, but I didn't. I couldn't wait to see him in concert. The show started. His voice was as absolutely amazing. It sounded the same as the recordings I had heard before dating back at least 20 years. The quality of the musicians - top notch! When I calmed down and really settled into listening to the music, I realized that he had the same pattern going on in every song. Every song seemed to be a jazzed-out, slightly elevator version of the original. In every song the musicians passed around their solo...every song. Really? These are fantastic musicians, all of them...but really? Every song we have to stop and have the guitar solo, the horn solo, the violin solo, etc? It was so predictable by the 3rd song. I just couldn't believe that they did the exact same thing in EVERY song. I guess I was the last to know that Van Morrison is known for having no charisma, at least that's what the lady in the bathroom told me and now after seeing the show, I believe her. There was no talking from Van during the concert; no connecting with the crowd. I don't need a speech, but something...anything...we got nothing. When he finished his last song of the night, I was confused. The people around me were confused. There seemed to be no finale, yet the house lights came up. We had no idea if we should keep clapping for an encore, or if that was really it...that was really it. After a few minutes, people seemed to start to shuffle out. There was absolutely no buzz in the crowd, no electricity, no energy that one would usually feel after a concert. The feeling I had is one you might recognize. You know when you are watching a movie, and you're so into it. And then it just ends. You're thinking, "What? Wait, that's it?" That was my Van Morrison concert experience. Don't think I'd spend another $125.00 (the cheap seats) on a ticket again.

I traveled, alone, from North Carolina just for this show and because it was his "Astral Weeks" performance. He played with a 10 piece: a horn player, violinist, piano player, two cello players, drummer, percussionist, upright bass, his lead guitarist who recorded the original "astral Weeks" with him in '68, and Van. The band was tight, the acoustics were excellent, but there were some occasional problems with the mix. He opened playing piano on one song, played sax on one, his white acoustic on about 5-7 or so, and then some harmonica and the rest vocals. Jay Berliner, his original lead guitarist from the '68 recording of "Weeks" was absolutely mind-blowing. His guitar skills, acoustic specifically, were amongst the finest I've ever heard. The song selection was the reason I was there. While the arrangements were different from 1968, they were complex and weaved just as interesting a tapestry. He played two songs from "Veedon Fleece", which blew me away. I was in Heaven. Really, every song was a dream opus, and it was a night I'll never forget. On the minus side, Van was typically grumpy, dropping an F-Bomb over a mic stand that was making him mad. He also had a "runner" he was continually pulling out to the stage to talk to during songs. He seemed very uptight, tense, and not happy to be there. I know, I know, van has ALWAYS been known to be difficult and cantankerous, but of the 50 or so reviews I read of "Astral Weeks: Live at the Hollywood Bowl", nobody mentioned this. It makes me wonder if he was on his best behavior in L.A. because he knew it was going to DVD. If you can accept that is Van's personality, that he loathes being a "star", and just wants to play is music, then you will not be disappointed. If you are expecting him to speak between songs or any other time, you'll never be satisfied with a VM show. He is who he is and his music is magical. I don't care about him reaching out to the audience; I care about him reaching inside himself and sharing with us what he pulls out.

Van Morrison hit the stage at 8:03 and soulfully sang/played till he trotted off at 9:43. The band kept playing Jump Jive and Wail for another 5 minutes. A nice blend of classics, covers and 1 song from his 2016 CD Keep Me Singing. The Band was totally in sync with Van's every move. A truly great show. He played 14 songs though one was a medley of 3 so he sang 16 different songs. A GREAT SHOW !!! Definitely better than the night before. Besides Moondance, Someone Like You, Precious Time and Enlightenment were my favorites and of course the ending with Wild Night, Brown Eyed Girl and Jump Jive and Wail had The Wiltern Theater crowd Rockin !!!

Van Morrison and his band of six superb musicians put on an energetic display of jazz and blues Monday evening at the Wiltern Theatre. And Van certainly held his own musically with his talented band members. Each member was given the opportunity to show his or her own artistic expertise during multiple solos in which he or she was highlighted, as was Morrison on his saxaphone and harmonica. Kudos to Mr. Morrison and his bandmates for giving us an enjoyable show.

This was my second time seeing Van Morrison in the past year. I thought the first concert (at the Ace Hotel) was great. This one, not so great. Van rushed through his set, finished, and didn't come back, leaving his band to clean up the mess. The Wiltern venue is OK, however the banquet chair seating sucks, and the drinks are a fortune. Probably won't be back.

An amazing performance from Van Morrison and his band at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas on Jan 31st. At 72, he still has a strong soulful voice. The range of songs he performed illustrated the eclectic appeal. Just disappointed that he didn't perform "Tupelo Honey" but can't complain, we had almost two hours of non-stop music from this extremely talented Irishman! Have been a fan of his for many years, but this is the first time I've had the opportunity to see him live - he certainly did not disappoint!

Fantastic concert.....awesome place to be.....great sound and acoustics.......Van Morrison and the Band were awesome, Morrison has changed his style from straight Rock N Roll as we all know and remember ....to Jazz Fusion style...... even though the style has changed the concert was still great.... My only slightly negative comment....is that Morrison has no verbal interaction with the audience at all. He never uttered a word to the audience.....he frequently turns his back to the audience and plays his sax. He walked onto the stage with no fanfare and walked off while the band was still playing.

This was our first experience at the Fox Theater, and we will certainly be back. The show started on time, and the expertise on stage kept me engaged and wanting more! I have been a Van fan for decades and this show did not dissapoint. His voice still sounds great, and you cannot mistake the sound. He played sax, guitar and harmonica, did old and new songs, and did not waste time talking to the crowd. The entire band was exemplory and the musicianship masterful. I do not regret spending $450 on 2 tickets, I mean it is VAN! And such a great venue, small and intimate, great sound, easy in and out, and fantastic architecture and restoration. This was a show that was so special it brought to me to tears, tears of joy and happiness!

I hate to admit it, although this was my first time seeing Van in concert. I have to say, if I can get to see him again (and get a ticket, due to I have tried in the past), I WILL. He sounds GREAT for 72! I go to alot of concerts and have had younger folks not sound as well as Van! He sang w/his daughter, and she's got the gift as well! I'm looking forward of hearing more from her!

We saw Van play the Fox Theater in Oakland last weekend. I am a huge fan of Van, and let me first say it was an honor to see him perform live. I felt very lucky to be there and to see him in the flesh. The first few songs were really good and the crowd was into it, but as the evening progressed it fell into a jazzy pattern that really never broke stride. He sang some of his hits, but even then, he sang them in the same, jazzy key song after song. Brown Eyed Girl was hardly recognizable because he changed the melody. The low point in the concert was when he brought his daughter out to sing with him. She sang a couple show tunes and threw off the whole vibe of the show. After that the crowd never really recovered. Also, Van marched off the stage towards the end of Gloria at the end of the performance, and never came back. It was an awkward ending. He could have at least come back after each band member had their little spotlighted moment and sing a bonus verse of the song. Also I hate when performers ignore several of their very best songs. I knew what to expect going in because I'd read the reviews. I also understand that sometimes performers are playing their new album on the road. Van didn't do this either. He played songs from throughout his career, but left out Into the Mystic, Tupelo Honey, And it Stoned Me, and quite a few other hallmark songs of his. He's older, and I have a great deal of respect for him, but this is not the Van of the 70's. He failed to make each song its own and in the end it felt like I heard one song he sang for 90 minutes, with an awkward show tune break in the middle.

Pleased Van included many of his classics throughout his show. Much jazzier accompaniement than I expected, which made the songs quite different than what you here on the radio. Finale (Gloria) was the exception with an awesome rockin' accompaniment.

I thought the show was just ok. He only played for about 90 minutes with is very short for the amount of money paid for the tickets. I personally don't like when artists mix up all the songs that we love in live shows, didn't fell like I heard my favorites the way I like them. Just a little bummed since I have wanted to see him in concert for about 30 years....underwhelmed. The Fox Theatre on the other hand is a beautiful venue and the staff did an amazing job. Very organized.

Some of his music was played at a different tempo and so those songs were difficult to recognize. Van Morrison played like he was speed dating. The minute he was done with one song, and the crowd began to praise him with clapping and hooting and hollering, he without a seconds hesitation would go directly into the next song without missing a beat. Other than uttering thank you once, maybe twice, he never spoke to the audience. He did play many of his most popular songs and that I'm grateful for. Would I recommend the show, maybe.

Terrible. Van came on stage, played continuously, never once acknowledged the audience. Never played any original rendition of any song. The music sounded like elevator music, with a few notes to give a hint as to what song he was playing. Very disappointing.

I have to admit the reviews on this site made me skeptical but I still had to see him. Van is bucket list material, and he never comes this way. Nashville is the closest he has come to my area in years. At the point that we have been saying goodbye to all the legends as of late, this was a must. We were very pleased. Van did not disappoint. People say he doesn't do the songs they want. We got Brown Eyed Girl, we got Jackie Wilson Said, Wild Night, Moondance, even got some Them stuff. I would have liked Domino or Into The Mystic, but I learned a long time ago that if you just accept what you get and enjoy yourself, you'll have a good time. People say he does not talk. He spoke a few times to the audience here. He seemed in good spirits, and he even nearly cracked a laugh during a song. And he still has that voice. Go watch him with an open mind. Let me the music and the voice take you on the journey it wants. You won't have any problems.

The fifteen foot tall Muse of Music statue greets visitors as they enter the Hollywood Bowl grounds, promising inspiration to all who enter. When Irish philosopher/mystic and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Van Morrison takes the stage in this iconic outdoor venue, on a starlit October southern California evening, it was a promise sure to be kept for the sell-out crowd of over 17,000. With a vast and genre-defying catalog that includes some of the most memorable and groundbreaking music in rock, any given night with Van is sure to hold both the familiar and the revelatory, and this night proved no exception. Morrison escorted the audience on a tour of his unique blend of blues, jazz, country, and celtic soul, all delivered with Morrison s signature vocal inventions, a crisp and precise band, and sparkling Hollywood Bowl acoustics. Morrison opened with Too Late from his fine new Keep Me Singing release, followed by remade jazzy, swinging versions of Have I Told You Lately and Wavelength . Van then blended into a showcase of his classic blues roots, launching into a medley of Baby Please Don t Go/Parchman Farm/Don t Start Cryin , the band laying down delta grooves the likes of Big Joe Williams and Mose Allison, Van breaking out the harmonica and retracing his early R&B days with his band Them, finally finishing the suite with Them s own Here Comes the Night . Van and the band shifted up a gear with a spirited Wild Night from Tupelo Honey, then eased into a medley of In the Afternoon/Don t You Make Me High/Raincheck , taking the listener on a musical journey of extended, free-flowing trumpet and organ, visions of golden autumn days and ancient highways, and Van s trademark vocal improvisations. Show opener Tom Jones, yes, that Tom Jones, then joined Van for a couple numbers. Jones retains his strong voice and stage presence, and the kinship of the Welsh and Belfast brothers traces back to the clubs they played together in the 1960 s. This duet interlude, however, served as an interruption to Morrison's flow for this listener. No harm though, as Van launched straight into a sweet, then searing, extended medley of It s All in the Game/No Plan B/Burning Ground . The set started with gentle guitar passages and Van on saxophone, then became more urgent as he implored the audience to make it real, one more time . The band eased seamlessly to the impassioned reminder to live every moment, because This is it, No Plan b , and the expression of the hardship of life, and search for redemption, somewhere between heaven and hell . Van exited the stage near the end, leaving the band and exquisite backup singer to gradually fade out the song, then nonchalantly returned for a trumpet and sax-driven jazzed up version of Brown Eyed Girl . A Morrison concert signature are these medleys- meditations that rise and fall, combining the rapturous and soul-wrenching, at times using the lyrics from one song with the melody of another, sliding effortlessly from one to another and back again, often when you least expect it, somehow bringing all the parts to one beautiful, profound whole, and an experience of musical transcendence by the time he s done. With a near-full moon and clear, starlit sky, it was indeed a fabulous night for a Moondance , which Van, alternating between saxophone and vocals, delivered to an appreciative audience. After readings of Jackie Wilson Said and Sonny Boy Williamson s Help Me , the band eased into the opening of Ballerina , from 1968 s seminal Astral Weeks album, giving each band member ample time to stretch and extend their playing. Van exited the stage again at the end of the song, then returned for a stirring version of In the Garden , the band razor sharp and fully engaged, with Van offering the incantation/prayer of no guru, no method, no teacher as he casually exited the stage for the final time, leaving the band to bring the show to an extended, dramatic close. Van Morrison is not known to be chatty on stage, rarely if ever introducing a song or addressing the audience beyond a thank you at the end of a show, as was the case this night. Even so, he seemed in good spirits, even a bit animated at times, perhaps due to the presence of his old friend Tom Jones, perhaps his affinity for playing the Hollywood Bowl, which he has done on a fairly regular basis over the years. Still, you don t go to a VM concert for conversation- you go to be transported by a musical, mystical experience that reaches places only the soul can know, and only he can deliver. And deliver he did. Van Morrison s music is as much as anything about the eternal search- for freedom, for enlightenment; and a quest for healing, for both artist and audience. According to the ancient Greeks, when the servant of the Muse sings, troubles disappear and the spirit is free. In the songs of Van Morrison, the promise was kept this night.

He sounded great, the band sounded great, and the music selection, though it did it did not include a lot of his hits, was very entertaining. Yes, he is not "chatty" but I'm okay with that as I'm there to listen to his music. He started at eight o'clock sharp and played for an hour and thirty minutes, however, we were all very surprised when he did not do an encore. Even a two song encore would have satisfied the audience s expectations. This was the first time we've seen Van Morrison and we are glad we went but we would probably not see him again given the ticket prices.

I Was very disappointed with Van Morrison's performance tonight. He only played an hour 20 min (no opener), didn't say a single word to the audience other than "Thank You", and he walked off the stage in the *middle* of the last song as his band and backup singer continued to jam for 15 more min after which point they turned the lights in and immediately started tearing down. The whole performance felt like he didn't want to be there and we were just "another gig." His performance of Brown Eyed Girl felt lifeless (video shared). I'm not sure if this was is how he has been performing lately or if something was going on in his life, but as an avid concert goer, I was very underwhelmed and saddened by his lack of passion he once had for his music. What a disappointing evening. Regardless that Van Morrison is a legend, this was one of the worst concerts I have ever experienced.

Sir Van has been on my Bucket List forever. Every summer, my hubby and I sit on the deck listening to his beautiful music, and then gripe about how we've never seen him live. Well, we changed all that. I almost sold my tickets at the last minute, after reading the terrible reviews from January, here on TM. Boy, am I ever glad that I didn't! Sure, Van didn't do a whole ton of his old hits... and I admit that it would have been great to hear Moondance or Tupelo Honey... but honestly, I barely missed them. Van put on an amazing show with an incredible band. The concert was flawless. Van was funny and personable, and obviously likes playing to the Boston crowds. The show started with a jazz set and then a slow blues set, both of which were phenomenal. He interspersed that with new songs, and a few deep cuts. Once the crowd was warmed up, he played more deep cuts from his older albums, as well as some hits including Wavelength and Kingdom Hall (which he dedicated to Prince). Van did not disappoint! A day later, my husband and I both remarked to each other that the concert felt like a spiritual experience. I feel changed by seeing him, somehow... like you can only come away feeling after seeing true genius, a living legend. That's exactly what Van is. He doesn't stick around for final bows or to see the audience wailing on its feet. He nonchalantly strolls off the stage (while singing or playing) and lets his fantastic band end the show, each of them delivering a solo more amazing than the last. I've got to say that I once heard John Mayer talk about that time in a musician's career when they no longer have to play all their big hits every time they get on stage, and they can just play what they enjoy playing, what moves them. If the audience likes it, that's great, but the artist isn't all focused on "people pleasing" anymore, like maybe they were in their younger days. Van put that into perspective for me. True, he played very few of his "big hits," but surprisingly, I didn't care. The music that he did play was so good, that I just wanted to ride that wave. Van has certainly earned the right to play and sing whatever the hell he wants to play and sing. All in all, it was a fantastic night that I won't soon forget. I've been going to concerts religiously for 40+ years, and this one will long be remembered as one of the best among them. It's amazing to me that Van's voice still sounds like it did when I first heard it, as a teenager. What an incredible career in music, and what a pure talent he is! Thank you Van, for bringing it to Boston. And thank you for 40+ years of sharing your talent with us. Your music is still relevant, still listened to VERY often, and still giving me goosebumps. Beautiful set too... beautiful lighting.

We attended the Tuesday, April 26th show in Boston which in a single word was OUTSTANDING. The sound engineer was also a star of the show due to the precise balance between the band and the vocals. Too often bands overpower the vocals and the words are often difficult to discern, but that was not the case in this concert. Every word was clear and understandable. He did a great job choosing the songs he sang with a nice blend of the popular and more obscure throughout the night.

I knew Van Morrison had a wonderful voice. It wasn't till I heard him in person at the Tuesday night show that I realized "wonderful" doesn't begin to adequately describe it. The range and power of it is nothing short of magnificent. I can readily say I've never heard a more impressive vocalist; (male or female), in my life. Couple that with a non-stop and terrific set list and you've got a show for the ages. I'd love to get a recording of that evening so my wife and I could listen to it again and again! This is why Robbie Robertson called him "Van the Man". His daughter has a very fine voice also. It was nice to hear her opening set, especially when she finished up with the appropriately lit "Purple Rain". If you have a chance to see this show, do it!!!

I have always felt a connection with Van Morrison's voice and music. Tuesday night's performance was no exception. I was surprised that Van started out on sax. I didn't know he still played it at concerts. Van's voice was in fine form which was what I was hoping for. With such a large repertoire, I knew there were going to be songs I didn't know. With that said, I still wish he had played more "hits". The hits included "Wild Night", "Brown Eyed Girl", and "Into the Mystic" all done with different tempos than the recordings (it seemed to me on purpose). Also, his band left much to be desired. I understand that after playing together band members often take more chances (particularly during solos) but they were downright sloppy. Worst band I can remember in recent years which is so sad considering what a talent Van Morrison is. Recommended with reservations.

While Van and the band were tremendous, they didn't play enough of the oldies. His voice was very strong and the musicians were all top notch. They only played for an hour and a half or so, and another half hour filled with songs like "Hear Comes The Night", "Gloria", "Moondance", "Domino", "Baby Please Don't Go"...etc. would have made the show "Amazing".
