Opeth

OPETH IN CONCERT: Swedish progressive metal rockers Opeth are all about keeping listeners on their toes. The band's technically virtuosic jams are a study in contrast, juxtaposing brutal guitar riffing with soft acoustic passages and blood-curdling death growls with melodic choruses. Their live shows play up these opposing elements perfectly, hitting fans with a maelstrom of moods and textures that run the gamut from heart-pounding to serene. At the center of it all is frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, a magnetic performer whose dynamic voice and wild-eyed intensity is the driving force behind ambitious compositions like "Sorceress" and "Will O The Wisp.

You could never go wrong with watching Opeth live! The entire band is amazing. Especially when its just them for 3 hours. How can anyone complain? I loved it! Especially the venue they selected. The Orpheum Theater. It was so gorgeous. Very opera-isc..

i've seen opeth at least a half dozen times and each show has been amazing. well, this one was no exception, and arguably sported one of their longest and most diverse setlists i've ever heard them play live. They played a couple songs off the new album "Watershed" as well as a healthy dose of old school Opeth "MR, MAYH" and of course a spattering of hits from the in between albums. My only disappointment was the absence of an "Orchid" track. But the set was easily around two hours, so I definitely got my fill of Opethness. All in all, a great show for hardcore Opeth fans and ones who are just discovering them. Mikael Akerfeldt was humorous and entertaining than ever between songs. If you have any interest in metal, this is a band you must see live.

As always Opeth didn't disappoint. Hypnotic, mesmerizing ... A great time!! True musicians in every sense of the word, their cohesiveness and attention to detail add a specific style and flavor to their music that sets Opeth apart from the rest. Mikael's vocals are sweet and commanding in their own unique way .. always a great show to see!

Great bands in a not so great venue. First time seeing Enslaved and second time seeing Opeth. Overall, I would highly recommend both bands on this bill. The Glass House could use better ventilation. Another down side was the lack of alcohol, which was probably related to the All Ages aspects of the show, but I've been to other All Ages venues where booze was available, so not sure why Glass House did not offer up cocktails for those over 21.

Well Opeth was amazing and enslaved wasnt necessarily for my taste but they were good dont get me wrong. The only real problem i had was that the glasshouse was poorly ventilated thus making it a very sweaty show. Other than that it was a great show with Opeth's song Karma being played for the first time live ever. All in all i got to see one of my favorite bands on my birthday. Was a sick show with a bass solo and guitar solo during the encore and a finisher of demon of the fall. Excellent playing few to no mistakes but what can ya expect from opeth

full house of hard rockers! European metal bands, sounds loud and angry, to me, (I was in the US Army Second Infantry Division) sounded like music to go into battle!! The bar gave me and girlfriend some good drinks, but it wasnt her cup of tea so we left early. I like these kinds of bands (Mayhem like) makes me miss the Ozzfest this year.

Very amazing concert, everyone was on key and the crowd was loving it. Lots of favorites and even a first time ever live performance of a song. Very special night that included not only a great performance from these awesome guys, but some rather funny moments from the always witty frontman. I would recommend this band to anyone who likes metal because the music is always very exiting and really expands several horizons music-wise. A great concert and certainly one to remember. I have never seen them before their Columbus 09 show, but I have been a fan for years. Totally rocked out. They played a large repertoire of music, including a song they never played before (can't remember the name of it). I also enjoyed their stage presence too- funny and laid back .

The music was beyond this world and the experience that you get from hearing and seeing Mikeal play his jazzy solos is like floating. The reproduction of acoustic guitar sounds live is amazing. And the sheer talent and splendor of Opeth is enough that anyone who says they love music should be there. The only part of this show that lacked was the vocals, I know Mikeal has a lot to consentrate on during a live performance but I've seen him do so much better before, maybe he was having a bad day vocally but besides this the show was killer!

It was my third time seeing this band but never at this venue. The whole night was just amazing. Enslaved(opening band) got the crowd all warmed up for Opeth and well Opeth just finished it. Great sound, great songs, great fans. It really was a night to remember. P.S Mikael is so funny & there is nothing like being the first one there in line and first to enter at the venue.

I am biased. I love this band's music outside of the live venues. That being said, these guys are very, very, good at playing their stuff live. Obviously the lead man is very close to the best musical artist on the planet (contemporary wise). Steven Wilson is on that top ten list as well, IMO. But since these guys are ahead of their time how good they are is not going to be clear until much later. Only those with an ear for complex musical themes, intricate instrumental passages and amazing dynamic vocals are going to appreciate this one (I'm pretty sure that includes the whole planet). I'll go and see them whenever they get back. Don't stay away too long now.

The Glass House has quickly become one of my favorite venues. It's location is ideal and the small size makes seeing your favorite bands all the more enjoyable because you're seeing them up close and personal. This time around it was Opeth and Enslaved making their way into town, and also marked my fourth time seeing Opeth and second time seeing Enslaved. Enslaved was the opener and even though they are one of my favorite bands and blew me away the first time I saw them play, they were a slight disappointment. But it wasn't the band's performance that was off. I have to blame the sound set-up for this one. The keyboards especially were drowned out and the more subdued effects that the band uses on their guitars were not apparent in the live setting. This really took away some of the atmosphere created on the studio versions of some songs. Nevertheless, it was still an enjoyable set but rather short and only songs from their last four albums were included. Being my fourth Opeth concert, I wasn't sure how many new songs I'd get to hear this time around. And even if it would have turned out to be mostly repeats, hearing lead singer/guitarist Mikael and his rants between songs is usually worth the price of admission alone. Thankfully I was happily surprised by a few songs I hadn't heard live before. They played old classics like "Godhead's Lament" and "Karma" which sounded amazing. One of the highlights of the show for me though was their extended bridge section for the song "Closure". It made a very good song that much better and I think most fans would agree that it was a pleasure to watch the band improvise on stage. Other than that, it was Opeth greatness throughout and they certainly don't disappoint in a live setting. Overall, a fantastic time was had at the Glass House seeing two of my favorite bands. I highly recommend both bands as well as this venue to any live music fan.

Myself and two friends drove out to Pamona to see Opeth and got much more than we had dreamed. Previously seeing Opeth at the Progressive Nation tour, we knew that Opeth was a live force to be reckoned with. Coupled with the smaller intimate setting of the Glasshouse this show easily took top ranking as one of my favorite shows. Rivaling other live shows I've witnessed from such musical titans as Tool and Primus, Mikael Akerfeldt and the crew preformed above and beyond. The musicianship of this band is outrageous. The power, the dynamics, and technicality all contained in this small venue brought the excitement and pure joy of heavy music to it's exploding point.

Their albums are extraordinary and unique, their calm melodies reinforcing the brutality of the heavy. Best concert I have ever been to. Opeth engaged the crowd, and played a flawless set. Accoustics were pretty darn good. Enslaved, however, dropped the event to 4 stars. They lacked energy, did not engage the crowd...and did not do a very good job entertaining. Finally, their accoustics were awful.

the ballroom was more on the small side but was not overly booked so that it was uncomfortable the sound guys screwed up a few times but for the most part the sound was pretty awesome. you could understand most of the lyrics and they were not drowned out by the intrumental part of the song. They played a long set and were very interesting and funny individuals.

This was my second time seeing Opeth live. Both times were absolutely amazing. They have so many great songs it doesn't really matter what they play (though they played quite a few of my favorites). Mikael (sp?) is funny as hell as always. Music sounded great, and everyone was nice and tight (though I would expect nothing else). The only problem I had was actually with the venue and not with Opeth. The Glass House is fairly small, which I think is good for sound, but they had a poor AC system so it was hot as hell with everyone packed in. Other than that though, everything was awesome.

Opeth is a fantastic band and they really seem to enjoy their fans. I saw them at the Glass House in Pomona. It's about a 2 hour drive from me, but hey, Opeth! The crowd was mostly college types looking for a bit of fun. There were a few metal fans but certainly not a full house. This is not necessarily a bad thing from my perspective, but my son would have liked a more full fledged mosh. Glass House seems to tolerate moshing- unlike many venues these days, which is a plus for metal and hardcore crowds. The facilities are bare bones but adequate. Soda and water, pretzels and other small snack offerings are available. The prices aren't super high but you wouldn't want to splurge on a lot of sodas here. There is a bar next door, with a pass thru entrance if you must. My biggest issue with Glass House was the ventilation- there was none. If the house has a ventilation fan they need to use it or get it fixed. The air was stifling. All in all I liked the show and preferred it to seeing this type of band in a downtown LA venue, but cripes, get some air in there!

I've been a long time fan of "Opeth" and had the privilege to be in the States to hear them play! An amazing show with Opeth, with an awesome setlist as well. Even the light show was great. My only beef was that it needed to be just a bit louder. Frederick's leads got lost in the mix at least at my seat for FF Rcenter which were killer by the way. Even as a whole I would have enjoyed a little more volume. Other than that the show was perfect.

This was my 7th time having the opportunity to see Opeth. After all these years they just keep getting better and better. I know a lot of their fans miss their guttural sound, and don't worry plenty of old heavy songs will be played on this tour. But their new stuff is nothing short of spectacular. Now this was a rare show for me in that there was only one opening band... but the opening band was just as good as Opeth. The Sword was a band that I previously have not listened to, and I regret that very much, they're an absolutely stellar group. Only disappointment with this show was The Sword not playing a bit longer, but with Opeth playing nearly 2 hours it was well worth the ticket price.

To have a well establish metal band perform at Radio City Music Hall was an experience. Even with a set list of old and new songs it still felt strange in "seats" for OPETH. I would have enjoyed older tunes like "April Ethereal" and others to be performed for the first time in a long time and to hear how they would go over in the Hall. The merchandise on sale was great and the King Kong OPETH t shirt for this specific show was a good touch. Cheers!!!

I've seen Opeth a dozen times before, but this show was truly special. A trip back in time with the "greatest hits" from older albums, a few selections from the new record, and a second set of selections from the Deliverance and Damnation re-issues. Radio City was a gorgeous venue, and although I missed Mikael's usual chatter between songs, their 2+ hour set of back-to-back hits still went by way too fast! Part of this tour included a full performance of the album, "Ghost Reveries," which was amazing. This being my favorite album by Opeth, and an favorite overall, I am a little biased. Unsurprisingly, some of my favorite songs are from this album so they were easily the best part. When they played "Hours of Wealth," the spotlight was mostly on frontman Mikael who was stellar in his vocal delivery and guitar work. A pure classic. I can't go without mentioned how incredible it is that Mikael sings with such a smooth and soulful voice in between his metal growling. When he goes back and forth, it's astonishing. The band plays tight and spot on. Great show!

There are no words to describe seeing your favorite band. It is truly something magical. Whatever your favorite musician/band is, seeing them perform is spectacular especially when they are as talented as Opeth. As per usual they delivered a fantastic concert experience in the architecturally delightful Beacon Theatre. They performed Ghost Reveries in its entirety which was spectacular and then the second half of the show was a mixture of songs from their whole discography. They always sound perfect live but the Beacon Theatre really accentuated their sound. Out of the four times I've seen them this was by far their best and my favorite performance.

To me, this was a perfect show. - The Orpheum is a beautiful, perfectly sized venue. - The sound was flawless. As a friend said, "whenever I can clearly hear the bass at a live show, I'm impressed". - The setlist was great as well. Ghost Reveries in its entirety followed by a good selection and mix of everything Opeth can do. Beautiful melodic songs intertwined with dark metal brutality. - And Opeth... The band sounded great, tight as usual. The equipment started to fail, but their professionalism stood out as always. Wolfsblood
Brilliant. Devastating. Heavy. Funny. Complex. Shades of light and blackness. All this and more can be accurately used to describe the experience that is an Opeth concert. This is not Kiss. They are not TSO. You are not going to get lasers and pyro. What you will get is a set of ever changing tempos, and intensities. The band is impossibly tight. They go from blistering along like a runaway freight train to a full stop with just a single keyboard note cutting through the silence in a millisecond, and just as suddenly careen off again. The sound at the House of Blues was full and loud, but not oppressively loud. This was a good thing, and something many bands either don't notice or don't care about , because it allowed the vocals to carry through the din, whether Mikel was growling in his death metal voice, or clean singing. On the whole the sound was balanced. You could hear the different guitar parts, bass parts as well as the keyboard lines and drums. Nothing was pushed overly to the front, and the songs were easily identifiable, and distinguishable from each other. If you are any kind of fan of complex death metal, you should absolutely check them out if they tour near you.

They started the set with a rousing rendition of Ghost of Perdition and it only got better from there -including an acoustic version of the classic Demon of the Fall. All the naysayers that complained the Opeth had gotten soft when they released their latest album (which has a more 70's progressive-rock feel) must now eat their faithless words in shame. Opeth is simply the best metal band of this age because they do a dynamic blend of original death metal, folk and progressive music in timeless fashion without peer.

I've seen Opeth several times, and they have never put on a disappointing show. They have always put on a top notch performance, and this show was no exception. I drove over two hours to this show, and brought my 15 year old niece with me. I introduced her to Opeth's music by letting her borrow my Blackwater Park CD, and she loved it! She really wanted to go, so I took her, and she said they were awesome! I bought her an Opeth hoodie, which is now her favorite, and she wears it to school every day. :-) Opeth captures the feeling of their albums very well in their live shows, and I would highly recommend seeing them to anyone. Their musical diversity, even within individual songs is incredible. They can go from slow, and melodic to heavy as hell, and back again effortlessly...a talent not many bands possess. Go see them if you have the chance!

Played a few tracks from Heritage, Face of Melinda from Still Life, A Fair Judgement from Deliverance, The Throat Of Winter from God of War 3, part of Harvest from Blackwater Park (crowd sang the chorus while they played, a fun and surprisingly good moment), 2 tracks from Watershed, and Closure from Damnation. Always a phenomenal show, and one of the best bands to play live that I have seen.

Katatonia was great but Opeth stole the stage as always. Their technical tracks cover almost every manageable music genre and never sound gimmicky or mainstream. Truly one of the best progressive metal bands in the world. Put their live show on your bucket list.

I took a road trip from Chicago to come see this show. Opeth was amazing as usual. My life is near complete having heard a song from Orchid. They played with the expected accuracy and perfection that they bring to every show with one minor guitar mishap. The venue however was bad. The sound wasn't great. The view from parts of the venue were terrible. The venue was over sold. Beyond that I have only one other thing to say. Please come to Chicago!

I went to this concert expecting great things, and Opeth did not disappoint. These guys offer the ultimate combination of musical talent and showmanship. The concert's structure was ideal for new and veteran listeners alike: Blackwater Park all the way through, then highlights from each of their other albums in chronological order. The first set was atmospheric and entrancing; Blackwater Park is truly an epic journey. After a ridiculously short break -- the band's stamina is impressive -- the audience was treated to one song from each of Opeth's other albums, complete with Mikael Åkerfeldt's inter-song narrative about the band's status in the context of each album. If you've ever seen Opeth before, you know that Åkerfeldt is quite a ham, and his banter at this event was as sharp and hilarious as in the past. All of this, combined with a dedicated, engaged audience, made for a truly memorable show. Although this particular show was the fifth of only six engagements, Opeth will no doubt be on tour again in the future. When that happens, I cannot recommend strongly enough that any and all attend.

I have been going to concerts for 35 years and this was the most profoundly beautiful metal I have ever heard - to hear it live, well....if somebody said "no more concerts for you" my music life would still be complete. And, for all of you "parents" who think that metalheads are these dangerous crazy people you are just wrong. Metalheads are some of the kindest, warmest, people on the planet.

This was only my 2nd Opeth show, and the size of the glasshouse was great. the sound was fantastic, and parking was free. i have also watched live footage, and bought the Live CD, so pretty much expected that the show would kick ass.. and it did! I saw them in LA, but the show was bigger, and could not hardly see the band at all. this time, it was fantastic! unrelated to the band, the 2 downsides of the show, were the fact they did not sell beer as it was an all ages show, and it was so damn hot! they needed a few fans in there to blow out all that body heat! but in any case, a great band, and a great show! i'd see them there again, anytime!

Another tremendous performance by one of the best metal bands on the planet earth! I'm a lead vocalist in a classic rock band and i love the way Michael can change his voice during the songs. It is amazing the way he does that.I'm working on it.

Ticket stated show started at 7:30. Was in the concert hall at about 7:25 and the opening act announced they were playing their last song as we walked in. Very disappointing that we missed one of the acts because Ticketmaster did not have accurate show times. Opeth and Gojira were otherwise great.

Opeth played great. The set list consisted of at least one song from every album except for the first two and Heritage (which I was a little disappointed by). Oddly enough, the only songs off Sorceress they played were the title track and The Wylde Flowers. As I said, the band played great. No real big hiccups during he performance and Mikael's growl sounded great on the older material, something I was happily surprised to hear given that recent footage of Opeth concerts made me believe he just couldn't do it anymore. The between song banter was great as well with a lot of great jokes, funny stories, and crowd interaction. The encore has to be the most unique and fun encore I've even seen. Rather than go straight into the final song, the band took requests from the crowd and played them the best they could. It was great seeing them try to play some of the less performed Opeth songs and it let us see a different side to a lot of these songs. All in all, this was an unforgettable performance and I can't wait to see them again.

Three Hours of Progressive Rock! Opeth played an amazing show, as always. The venue is also a charming small space. The sound can get a little muddy, but the sound engineers did there best to address the sounds. Sometimes they were more successful than others. Thank you Belasco for letting them play until midnight.

Having seen Opeth several times in concert, this particular evening was possibly their strongest performance yet. The set list was a beautiful blend of material from nearly their entire catalog, showing a phenomenal breadth of styles. Their performance was tight throughout, with superb sound quality and mixing (the only unfortunate mixing part was a bass drum that resonated a bit much in the space). This was a performance to cherish for a life time.

Unfortunately, Katatonia, as good a band as they are on CD, were the victims of poor mixing and they just sounded loud and uninspiring despite a lively stage presence. I felt bad for them. I gave them a C-. Opeth on the other hand, being the lead band, got the better mixing for vocals, guitar leads and lighting. I saw them last fall in Orlando and they put on a great show at the House of Blues without any of their heavier, growling numbers. It was disappointing to some though that seemed to be their only complaint. I bought this ticket as a last minute decision and made a work day out of my trip to the State Theater in St Pete. I was wondering if this leg of their tour would bring a change in their set list and I wasn't let down. Although I've heard better shows from a sound quality standpoint, they earned a B+ which is a pretty healthy rating. The night was made better by the phone conversation with my son for the hour and a half ride trip home. He turned me on to Opeth several years ago and I wish he could have been there to see the show with me.

Incredible show! I've been waiting a long time to see either Steven or Opeth live, but I got to see them both only 20 minutes from my home! The musicianship and songwriting of both bands is incredible. Wilson played mostly from the new album, which was OK since it is a great album. The Opeth set was a great mix of new (Devil's Orchard and Haxprocess from Heritage) and older material. Mikael Akerfeldt was entertaining despite being somewhat under the weather. My only complaint was that the set lists were short (7 songs for Wilson and 8 for Opeth) due to the fact that three bands played instead of the normal two. I would rate the concert 5+ stars based on the bands and their performances, but the venue sucks, so only 4 stars overall.

This is only my 2nd time seeing Opeth in concert, the first being the Heritage World Tour in November of 2011, but my god this show was amazing!!! They didn't waste much time with any soft songs. It was pretty heavy from the get go. And Michael was absolutely hilarious! There was a small enough crowd that he could interact with most all of us pretty comfortably and you felt like you were able to connect to the band on a more personal level, especially with him telling his jokes and whatnot. The only downside I saw was the Norva (concert venue) was rather strict about moshing, so no one in the crowd really got to have the full concert experience. We had maybe 2 or 3 mosh pits during the entire 2 and a 1/2 hour long Opeth set, but there was alot of spilled drinks on the ground so I think it's safer that it didn't get too crazy. I cannot WAIT for the next Opeth concert!!!

The sound was pretty bad. That's not the fault of the bands or even the sound engineer. The venue is just small and the acoustics are bad. Admirable job, all things considered. I really wish I could give the show 5 stars because Opeth and Steven Wilson both played amazing sets, but the sound...meh.

I've attended and performed in a few hundred metal concerts over the years. I have also attended and performed in a few hundred classical & contemporary music concerts over the years. The difference in performance quality, professionalism, sound quality, and atmosphere is embarrassing. The Venue: This Upstate Concert Hall is not worthy of the name. It boasts a ridiculously inefficient floor plan, with the stage in one corner and a patchwork of standing areas separated by walls and a bar; its acoustic properties render it inappropriate for a town hall meeting, much less a music concert featuring artists whose production values are an integral element in their compositions. Half the crowd was loud and disrespectful to the performers, while the other half tried to actually listen to the music. Unfortunately only those in the front two rows of any section could see anything because of the flat layout that is, if their view wasn't being blocked by big security men walking around at their leisure, having full-voiced conversations during the performances, and flashing their flashlights into peoples' faces. The Sound: I am now thoroughly convinced that bands like Steven Wilson and Opeth should only play in actual concert halls ones with assigned seating and acoustically motivated design with established rules of audience conduct, like in any other serious concert. The sound here was horrible for the most part about 300% too loud, muddy, spectrally imbalanced, full of standing waves. Only Wilson's set sounded good once I inserted my high-end ear plugs to maximum attenuation levels. Wilson even commented disappointedly that this was the loudest stage volume he'd ever had, and it was way too much. Principles of hearing compression and Fletcher-Munson curves demonstrate why music should not be played this loud, ever: it will inevitably sound atrocious. The Bands: Katatonia did a decent job. Their music is on the boring side, far too straightforward, repetitive, predictable. But, pleasant enough, very soothing lead vocals, nice breaks for electronics though it was pretty strange having pre-recorded tracks perform so much of the music while the band just stood around... Steven Wilson's band was absolutely brilliant. The utmost in professionalism and artistry from every member of the ensemble; these are actual musicians at work, and the vibe they exude individually and as a group is palpable. Wilson is a brilliant band leader, directing the ensemble with energy and conviction. Flawless, powerful performance of the entire set. It bears repeating that their actual sound was eons more refined and balanced than the other two bands, although unfortunately amplified about 37 times too loud by the front of house system. Opeth, whose records I consider to be brilliant and whose concerts I've been attending for 13 years, were very disappointing, particularly after Wilson's sharp set. Opeth's sound was muddy, imbalanced, and far too loud. Their actual performance was boring, unenergetic. Their set-list was boring and illogical; I really had expected them to perform Heritage as a whole and then a few back-catalog works, but I guess they don't take their compositions so seriously in concert anymore... The set was a hodge-podge of unrelated songs from their catalogue without any overarching theme or program. Their stage setup was unpleasant: keyboards and drums hidden in back, behind their mechanized light show, making it impossible to actually see the drummer at work pretty unfortunate, since he is the only band member doing anything visually interesting throughout the performance. By far the most unpleasant element of Opeth's set, aside from the terrible sound, was Akerfeld's arrogant, insulting, uninformative, uninteresting, amateur stage patter. Every time the band stopped playing, their otherwise artistically wonderful frontman engaged the crowd in inane banter that was overly encouraging to the odd heckler/yeller/screamer in the crowd. He also spent a fair bit of time insulting his bandmates and the other bands on the bill, in a sorry attempt at humour. Very unprofessional, and it really detracted from the atmosphere of the evening, which was already unpleasant enough. When I attend an Opeth concert, I want to be transported by the mood that the band creates with their music and their stage presence. Not so this time. Actually, the last time that happened was on the Damnation tour, and every time since then has been a disappointment. No more of these ridiculous concerts for me. Let me know when you're playing in a real music hall. Until then, you albums will suffice.

Show -- Katatonia sounded amazing; blew away my expectations. Started to listening to them around "The Great Cold Distance" period, and will be looking forward to seeing them live again sometime in the future. Steven Wilson and band put on a great performance. It was a true pleasure to watch, and there were many surprising and interesting moments in the music which made me want to go out and buy the album so I could re-listen. Opeth closed the show out the way that only Opeth could accomplish. Truly great musicians, and I have to say that I like the dry humor and wit that comes with the performance. Venue -- the sound was great, the layout works well and the bar service is fast, professional, and well-priced compared with other venues that I've been to Ticketmaster -- website is easy to use; I like being able to print my own ticket at my convenience, even on the day of the show; ticket was well-priced.
