1st time I had seen David live since 1977. While I would have preferred to hear his whole band with him, this was quite entertaining. Both musicians are excellent players, the seats were great and ( as a first timer at this venue) I thought the space to play in was great. See this if you get a chance

I agree with previous reviews that he slowed it down a lot, but in all it was a good show. His band has absolute talent, and it was fun watching each member do their own show off picking. The fiddle player was awesome, and a lot of fun to watch.

How can one guy and a bunch of virtuosos play that well in that many styles? Bromberg showed that his 40+ years of writing and playing, not to mention a pile of talent, put him at the top of the list for a great show. (And he was pretty close to the top of the list many years ago, when I saw him at a small venue in Ann Arbor, MI. Who would have expected his voice to get that much better?) What's your pleasure? Rock? Folk? Blues? IRISH? Bring on the Bromberg. See if you can get him to bring his string and horn sections too. Best clarinet solo I ever heard was at this show.

I saw the Big Band 30+ years ago in Chicago and they may be a little older as I, but we went out to Virginia expecting to be entertained and we were not disapointed. We would do it again,I just wish The Big Band would come back to Chicago.

Bromberg and the Big Band were Fantastic... even though they are getting a little on in years, they still jam better than any band I have seen... This is my 7th time seeing Bromberg, 3rd w/big band. I traveled from SC to see him and would travel to see him again. My only complaint is he didn't play "Sharon". What the Hell?? how could he play w/the big band and NOT play "Sharon"? David, Add it to your play list! Can't wait to see him again. Sherre

This show was everything I expected and more. Bromberg brings energy, fun, and enthusiasm, and his band is top notch. Lots of familiar songs, but done differently than heard before. The song list spanned quite a bit of his career, and was just plain outstanding.

I first heard David Bromberg in 1971. I got to see the Bromberg Trio in 1980. With only a trio he could not do a lot of the songs many of us wanted to hear. This time he was with the big band most of whom date back to the early 70s band. Saturday evening he opened to a raucous crowd with Sloppy Drunk. During the next two hours songs included Dyin Crapshooters Blues, Pallet on your Floor, Summer Wages, Come Into My Kitchen, Drown in my own tears, Send Me To the Lectric Chair, Will Not Be Your Fool and came back for an encore with Just Called to Tell You. Midway through the performance David did Over the Rainbow. In all David did 15 songs. I cannot wait another forty years to hear David Bromberg again. I doubt either of us will make it. I drove six hours for this show and will gladly do it again.

. . . And they are still so good, I started to weep tears of joy when I got back to my car. I never thought I would see the Big Band again. The show in DC was so good, I immediately got 3 tix for Tarrytown and Albany, and called my old pals from Boston. We're doing mini-tour. Who knows if we'll ever have this chance again? My friends' bands have played all of Bromberg's songs for almost 40 years. ~

David Bromberg is amazing. His voice remains so sweet and pure, even after all these years. Every member of his band pulls his/her weight. The Angel Band, led by Bromberg's wife, is a wonderful addition. You can tell how much fun they're all having. I'll never miss a Bromberg show at the Birchmere.

David Bromberg was worth the price of admission. That said, there is risk in seeing someone from your youth and hoping for the same experirece. Jorma is the shell of his former self. His playing was boring and tentitive. I was planning to attend his guitar camp and after last night he just saved me two grand. So I guess the show wasn't a total loss.

More blues than I expected, but I loved that. Great songs, absolutely gorgeous harmonies from Angel Band. Excellent musicians all...and the female guitarist was easy to watch. She just LOVES playing. The show moved along well, and I really liked the way they moved back and forth into each others group. Dave is married to the leader of the Angel Band and they just play well together. Made for a great night out. And I'm a guitarist and I'm picky about acts with guitarists. If you're a musician, or a singer...see this show and take notes. Well worth traveling to see!! The Angel Band was selling CD's between acts, but I think they didn't consider no one wanted to leave their seats between the two shows. Maybe think about doing it either before or after the performance.

I haven't seen David Bromberg in over 25 years since I had caught his show several times in New Castle Delaware and other than appearance (like all of us) he was just as great as I remembered.. The voice, the material, and his incredible playing skills are just awesome. And the kid on fiddle wasn't bad either!!! WHAT A SHOW!! David please don't take any more SHORT breaks from performing!!!

We have been fans of Bromberg and blues and bluegrass for years, his re-emergence on the scene is most welcome. didn't know what to make of the "angel band" comprised of his wife and 2 other singers but they were fabulous. All in all a real treat to watch such amazing musicians, all. Cannot imagine that anyone that appreciates great music wouldn't enjoy these guys.

Ah, the passage of time can be tough on musicians. Heck, on all of us. (That's why i avoid mirrors.) The years on David have been unkind to him physically--a bit of a shock to one who has not seen him live since the late 70s. OK, we got that out of the way. But David still has got the stuff. He's still got that unique, controlled-gravel voice and phrasing. That mischievous, dry sense of humor that permeates his lyrics that enables him to skewer his song characters without seeming to be cruel. He paints song characters that we all relate to because we have been there--we are gullible dopes full of hopefulness, full of stupidity. "I'm not a drinker, but a drink allows me to think more clearly. About my next drink." The music is great, the playing is tight and fun and it's more -- it's a real personality and presence that makes us feel good. Acoustic or electric, David can pick and play with the best, from the classic folkie strumming/picking to electric blues worthy of BB. Some oldie, folkie-boomer stars are best left on their old LPs. David's talents still shine. Rock-solid melodies well played with a just-right bass-line and, most importantly, with something to SAY. What a treat. Did I say David can flat play that thing? Oh, he can flat play that thing. I hope David out-Ronk's Von Ronk. Keep on playin, David. Kudos also to The Kid and sideman Mitch Corbin, fiddle/mandolin and guitar/mandolin respectively. Solid. Fun. Come back the the Birchmere every yea.

He didn't perform for 22 years, but you'd never know it. His voice is still as pure as it was in the early 1970s, when I saw him perform at Nassau Community College. Fiddler Nate Grower adds a lot, as do the Angel Band. The chemistry between the band members is palpable.

After 22 years away, David Bromberg is back - he has a new CD "Give me one more try". The show made for an enjoyable evening with tunes showcasing a range of bluesy styles for David's classic songs about love gone awry, all while gently poking fun, mostly at himself. But what made this really special was Nate Grower a young fiddler who is playing with the band. I have never been a huge fan of fiddling, but Nate could make that fiddle sing a song so melancholy it made me want to weep, followed by a song so joyous that I had a hard time staying in my seat. I picked up his CD after the show, and got another for my bluegrass-loving brother.

A good time was had with The David Bromberg Big Band. They opened with "Get up and go", a peppy tune done with typical Bromberg style. The band continued with a few bluesy songs including "A long Goodbye" from his recent CD "Use Me" before National Flat picking Champion Mark Cosgrove did his instrumental solo, Alabama Jubilee. Touching on a few Bromberg standards, "Summer Wages", "Dark Hollow" And "Testify" before returning for the encore with the classic "The New Lee Highway Blues" and Tom Rush's "Lost my Drivin' Wheel". David is a fine instrumentalist and always has fine musicians backing him, he is never a disappointment!

Bromberg's exceptional timing and the "sports car" version of his band (Quintet) displayed their exceptional musicianship in an excellent single set (just short of 2 hours by my estimate). Many chances for the band to show their chops, with some exceptional jamming. Dual duets on one song were standout. I d suggest checking out his new blues release. Set was something like: - walking blues - the Gary Davis (?) song about the wig and bowling ball - not coming back no more - just go home - dark hollow - Tennessee waltz - standing in need of prayer( a capella) - will you still love me tomorrow (completely acoustic) - some raucous song _ the song advising to never gamble - strongest man alive - several jigs - gold rush and other Bill Monroe songs in a medley (solo by the guitar player) - statesboro blues (solo by Dave Bromberg) - Summer Wages - another one I didn t id - orange blossom special - Mr. Bojangles (encore) Birchmere sound was perfect, as always. Food selection is limited (I tend to get the dishes I trust: red beans, Greek salad, ahi tuna, pulled pork, bread pudding). Wine selection is awful. Good beers and ciders (Yay Magners!).

David Bromberg and band were simply fantastic and Bromberg's voice is somehow better than ever. The sound system in Town Hall could have been better but the show rocked and the range of music was great, broader that a more recent show I saw on Long Island. As usual Dave's sidekick guitarist Mark Cosgrove was simply fabulous and complemented Bromberg's retro electric guitar blues style. The horns were really great and the recent addition of Matt Koza on sax and clarinet was inspired. Peter Ecklund has a way with a horn that is always mindblowing. As a group they were tight and fun. Great to hear "Sharon" once again but I was hoping that somehow Maria Muldaur would come out suddenly and dance, as she did so many years ago for Dave at Town Hall. Wow...what a great evening.

One word review: Disappointing. More detailed review: Having seen Bromberg since the early '70s in many different venues and band formats, I was excited to see him with the 'big band' for his birthday. I had already seen the Quintet 3 times earlier this year, with each show better the prior, but had not seen the band for 2 years. Bettye LeVette as an opening act was insane. Whiney, drone-toned blues with a piano accompaniment impacted the crowd like the pilot's announcement 'sorry, but we'll be circling for the next 45 minutes'. In a small intimate venue, she's OK...maybe, but not Town Hall before David. Any glimmer of excitement the crowd had entering had been snuffed out about 15 minutes into her set. The Big Band' was the Quintet plus 3 guys off the street (3 horns with sheet music for each musician to know when to paly) and Peter Eungland, who looked feeble and out of it. The entire show had NO pace, NO energy, and certainly NO interest from David in playing. An occasional spark (Sharon, Strongest Man Alive) showed Bromberg's greatness but it was short-lived. The encore with LaVette was hard to watch--the "improvisation" between the 2 of them was painful. As for the 'birthday celebration', never a mention or acknowledgement. Over-all, a bizarre night. Lastly, why does the Town Hall charge $5 for each 'souvenir cup' for refreshments? You cannot order anything without paying this extra $5/drink. Same $5 charged if having a soda, beer or a shot of booze. $9.00 for a 12 oz Coors Light bottle plus $5 for the cup. And he had the nerve to ask for a tip of 20% on the credit card. Outrageous.

David Bromberg was in great form, pulling many sources of music together without diluting the various genres. He is still a terrific bluesman, but he also displayed his abilities with ragtime and other fingerpicking styes, a capella gospel, r & b, humorous songs, original songs and unique interpretations of the music of other musicians. His vocals have improved with age and he was able to put out a wider range of emotion in his singing than in earlier years. He is still a wild man, so that you don't know what he's going to do next. His band was excellent and loose and creative. Bromberg and his band played with energy and joy. The vocals were mixed a little too low and, when the full band was playing, the sound tended to be a bit muddy. Otherwise, It was a terrific evening.

These 2 great artists should have never been paired together. The Bromberg fans did not really know Bette's music and they were downright RUDE. Many people got up during the concert so much so that she walked off the set only to be told by her producer to return. I have been to many of her fantastic concerts and perhaps she should have read the crowd better and sung more of her upbeat tunes rather than almost all ballad -like ones. She and Bromberg could have mentioned each other and/or maybe been on stage together for a couple of songs. This was a bad mix for the artist, and the audience. I was embarrassed by how the fans treated this fantastic performer. Bromberg's band was great but crowds reaction to the first set diminished my enjoyment.

The last time I saw David was in the early 70's, he blew me away then. David Bromberg is a master of the blues but he is adept at many different genres. He started the show with songs off his new blues album, but he filled the show with folk, bluegrass, and even country. He has always been one of my favorite artists and he didn't disappoint me at all. All of his band members were very talented, including Johnny Dukes, who was the opening act and sat in with the band. The only negative of the night is the strange "curfew" that the venue has. The review would be 5 stars otherwise.

I would - and have - travel a distance to see David Bromberg and it is always worth it. This was our first time at the Birchmere, which is a wonderful venue. Great space, great sound, interesting audience, awesome servers - I'm thanking YOU, Janine. And the opening act - Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams - were very, very good. David is an awesome musician, and always has great musicians playing with him. We were especially excited to hear him play from his new, not yet released, CD."The Blues, the Whole Blues, and Nothing But the Blues.' And the new songs, as well as the old songs, were excellent. I'm giving him 5 stars, because he's David Bromberg and no one compares. Yet the last few times I've seen him, he has seemed enthused about the musicians he was playing with and not very interested in connecting with the audience. Maybe I've just caught a few down nights, and who can be on every night. But even with that, it was still a great show and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I grew up listening to Bromberg, the Dead and other music in that area. My girlfriend is more of a Beyoncé type person. So I usually wind up going to shows by myself. I have gone to see Bromberg the last couple of times that he has performed at the Capitol Theater and have always been blown away by the great show he does. So this year I dragged the girlfriend to the show. My feeling was he is such a treasure everybody should see him at least once. She was blown away by the show she didn't want it to end. She did tell me she had a slight feeling of dread about going to the show I have now been told that I can no longer see Bromberg by myself.

Well we might get lucky. The joke was not on us. David Bromberg is kind of a musicians' musician. He had some modest success and then went into hibernation. He is back with a new album and projects and thankfully touring. The concert was excellent. He started off with the blues and the band was very tight. After a while he and the band moved seamlessly to blue grass and did not miss a beat. His voice was strong as good as it was when I saw 40 years ago (like he had been in hibernation). He easily bantered with the audience. It was a small crowd, but I guarantee no one left disappointed. Well, maybe there was a little disappointment he did not play longer (1:45) or that he did not play some of my personal favorites, but he was great. I would see him again tomorrow if he was here. I would give it 4 1/2 stars almost 5 better than recommend, slightly below amazing. Excellent.

Waiting until the end to get back to his roots, the flat picking at the end was amazing and the encore of New Lee Highway blues was incredible and the fiddle player had even the band members shaking their head. You can't play the fiddle any better or faster. I have seen the reviews which says he does not play the old stuff. True there is no longer a 20 minute rendition of Bojangles, which i miss, but these are his hold standards rearranged for a big band where it seems everyone plays 2 or 3 instruments. Even the back up singers are unbelievable, though you only get them soloed once--big mistake David. Here is to New York grass.

A great night has been had by all that attended except for a few who sat under the air conditioner that dripped all night. The music and musicians were wonderful I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Dar Williams opened, and she was wonderful. When David and company came out they started with an old favorite which got everyone rocking. On almost every song, the musicians got a solo. Although I can't remember their names, the guitarist and fiddle player were outstanding ... The bass and drums also rocked. Broke into a Celtic song ... The encore was almost an acoustic. Drums with brushes. The fiddler was a young dude, and he was excellent. The other guitarist ...excellent as well. David himself did not disappoint. We loved him. Played older music that got everyone into the mood ... It was fabulous.

The Band was just fabulous. Although I never heard 1 song of David Bromberg before the show, I really enjoyed the performance. I bought the show tickets to see Dar Williams who is a genuine soul and writes great songs.

First, David Bromberg is an outstanding musician. Second, his back-up band were all extremely talented as well. Bromberg's rapport with the audience was fresh, funny and frequent. From blues to bluegrass, he covered it all. Over two hours of sheer delight. He is a definite must-see.

From the opening "Sharon" on his red Stratocaster to not often played gems like "someone's else blues" David put on a great show bantering with the crowd between songs he was having as much fun up there as we were listening to him. A great venue to see a show both intimate and acoustically near perfect although they did have a little trouble with the mix this night. 2 hours of Bromberg at his best still smiling

Bromberg was never better. He mainly played new songs with just a few old ones scattered in. His quintet is composed of amazing musicians. They seemed to be having as much fun as the audience. Very professional. They started right on time, no opening act, and played for almost 2 hours

Seems like the Quintet allows everyone to take their abilities to their limits more than the Big Band which I saw a few months ago in Alexandria. I sure hope there are many more Bromberg shows in the future.

As David Brombreg said himself.....in the old days when there were record stores no one knew how to classify his music, folk, rock, pop or whatever. So his records were always put in the miscellanious section. The one thing no one can deny is that he and his band can play guitar. As he got older it seems he lean more toward hillbilly but it was a pleasure to watch them play.

David Bromberg has a great sense of humor and sings a ton of feeling into his songs. Made me nostalgic for the 70/80s in a really nice way esp since it's so hard to revive great moments from the past. His songs feel real and captured some of the essence from that time. His show was top notch and not dated in any way. All the supporting musicians were great and all had a chance to shine. A great Quintet and evening well spent :)

It was good to see david bromberg perform live again. Although he has aged his voice and musical knowledge has developed . He performed more ballads that were influence by earlier times . his band , as usual was terrific.

If you have not beet to a David Bromberg concert you are missing something very special. His shows are eclectic, he has incredible range. On any given night he plays rock , blues, bluegrass and anything else he feels like playing. Mark Cosgrove, his second guitarist, is senational, he too can play amything. And you can't say enough about fiddle player Nate Grower who is among the best. In short, another great show!

Saw David Bromberg & his full band at The Space in Westbury New York. Bromberg talked a lot during the songs (but that's his thing), he was funny & interacted a bit with audience too. When the band got going, they cranked! Otherwise, a little to mellow for my liking. I've said this before about the venue, it is really nice, very comfortable, every seat is great, but they need to amp up the sound. The impact of the music is lacking. Same thing at the Los Lobos concert I saw there. The Space should upgrade their sound system & then it would be awesome !

Excellent concert. It was my first time at a concert indoors at Bethel woods. The setting is very nice and the sound is good, with great lights. David Bromberg had 4 very good musicians in this latest band and they played very well together. He didn't do many of his better known songs, but that's OK because all the songs were good and many were great. He sure can play the blues, but his technical playing is outstanding too. Loved the fiddler as well.

We had never even HEARD of David Bromberg. Got an email from Bethel Woods and sampled the music and we both loved what we heard, so we bought tickets. We were delighted with the show! Such an eclectic selection of music: blues, rock, bluegrass, jazz - all wonderful. Talented musicians and David knows how to truly entertain his audience. We will surely see him again, given the chance!

Unfortunately, it's not quite the same without the entire band, but regardless David was at his best! Bromberg's unique method of interacting with his audience and the talent within the quintet was captivating.

David Bromberg and his band were some of the greatest and most talented musicians I have had the immense pleasure to hear. Even the opening act, Honey Child, was phenomenal. This was our first time at the Birchmere. We shared a table with very friendly people and had a great meal. Kudos all around!!!

David likes to switch up the tunes, but after all of these years his sound is still distinctive. The show was great, and it looked like he was playing to a sold out audience at the Birchmere. There is a lot of talent in David's "Big Band". The fiddle player, Nate Growler, can really tear it up, and every time his brass section kicked in ( John Firmin and Peter Ecklund), you could see David grinning from ear to ear.

My wife and I had an excellent time, we love the Keswick. We both enjoyed the lead off artist he is a fantastic guitar player! I am on old fan of David Bromberg my wife is up and coming! He and his band were superb alone and together. We really enjoyed the whole evening and their playlist selection did not disappoint. The only negative was we both thought there was a rather low turn out.

I'm a huge fan of David Bromberg, have been for years. I love "Sharon," "Send Me To The Electric Chair," and his version of "Mr. Bojanbles." Unfortunately he didn't do any of those songs. I didn't know a single one he played, Most of the music was slow, sleepy stuff, in fact, I actually fell asleep several times. I couldn't relate to some of the really "hillbilly" junk he played. David seemed disinterested and bored. He didn't relate to the audience well at all. The dude's old. Maybe he was just tired or has lost his mojo. He should stay in Wilmington where he makes violins and give up perfomring. I'll never go see him again. My wife and I feel like we were really ripped off. It wasn't that what he played was bad, it was just so bland and not al all what we expected and had hoped for.

AWESOME!!!! have followed DB for over 35 years. so glad to see him with band again Heard many favorites. Should have brought Nancy in front she was hidden in back. Don't think DB introduced all members !!! Did I miss that? I know them from years ago though DB comments about war were excellent and much needed. Don't miss DB If you've never seen him live, GO.

Dave still has it, have not seen him in 10 years, the show was great. The musicians in the big band, horns, sax/clarinet, violin, two guitarist, drummer and female chorus, were awesome. A lot of jamming, great story telling and Dave being Dave. I brought my girlfriend, and after the show she told me she didn't think she would like the show, but she thought it was great also. Keep on rocking Dave.

I was glad to see that David changed up the set. For a number of years he did pretty much the same exact show. A couple of new faces, guitar and fiddle. His show is always fun, everything from Irish fiddle tunes to electric blues.

An incredible evening of ridiculously talented musicians. David was in fine form, the voice has not aged. But the virtuosity of the band was almost unbelievable. Some sound mixing problems on the guest guitarist's mike was the only blemish. Quite an evening.
