Matisyahu

Since first emerging on the international stage in 2005, Matisyahu has established a reputation for following his muse—from the stripped-down roots reggae of the gold-certified Live at Stubb’s to the trippy ministrations of Youth to the polished pop eclecticism of Light. Then, in 2010, he returned to the venerable Austin venue that introduced him for Live at Stubb’s II, demonstrating that all those travels had somehow only strengthened his connection to his musical bedrock. It was a whirlwind half-decade journey, one that earned Matisyahu a place in pop culture at large. And it was only the beginning.

I've seen Matisyahu perform at least 5 times before and I know he's capable of putting on an incredible show. Unfortunately it seems something was definitely off at his Saturday night show at the Ritz in Raleigh. The first opening act was Orphan and they played 3 all instrumental songs, which were great. Then Common Kings came on and they put on a very high-energy and amazing show with an uplifting mix of rock, rap, and reggae and they really got the crowd excited. Then when Matisyahu came out, he barely played any of his hits and generally put on a very disappointing performance. There was only one guitar solo and one keyboard solo, both which were great, but we usually get a lot more. Matisyahu only did beatboxing once, I think, and you could barely hear it. Even when he played better-known songs, they weren't right and the crowd couldn't sing along. Several people around me who came specifically for Matisyahu left after the first few songs. When he finished, the crowd didn't even want an encore. Common Kings came out and tried to get the crowd to ask for an encore and they obliged and then Matisyahu came back with Common Kings and they only played like a half a song and then left. Overall it was a very disappointing show.

Seriously, what happened Matisyahu. I've seen you before and you played songs all the way through. This was just a jam session. Musicians and your voice were great although you never really played though any of your songs or hits. I love your albums but will never go to see you again. A total disappointment. If you like long jam sessions then this concert was for you.

Umphrey's McGee, as always, had the crowd eating out of their hands for their entire set. Simply put, they know how to entertain. They can captivate a crowd with their ingenuous solos; but more importantly, they can slow the song down long enough for you to catch your breath and let anticipation build before their next roller-coaster ride audio-visual CLIMAX. Matisyahu started strong, and seeing as I was not a fan before the show I was judging him harshly. I was liking the kosher vibes my ears were being fed. After an hour of smooth raggae hip-hop fusion he brought out a couple of "special guests" and I, along with many others, got bored. I can't say I know how it ended, because even though the bass line was shaking the earth, the energy left the stage along with the cast of Umphrey's McGee.

Umphrey's got up and dominated for about an hour forty-five. Then a fifty minute set-break and the joker Matisyahu came on and was terrible. I left after about 20 minutes.

Umphrey's was an above average jam band that played way too long. I think Matiyahu has been hanging with Umphrey's too much. I like bands that throw some cool stuff at you at concerts but this was too much of a good thing. I thought the show could have been tightened up a bit, more thriller and less filler. The entertainment value was not there to hold my attention, and the others that left.

This was the third Matisyahu show I have seen in Minnesota. The first one was at Roy Wilkins, the second at the Zoo and the last one at First Ave. The Zoo being outside was spectacular, a jaw dropping and mind blowing musical and lyrical extravaganza.

It has been 2 years since the last time I saw Matis in concert and I was completely shocked to see him come onto set in a hoodie and track pants. Very different than the last concert I saw of his when he was wearing a suit and hat. this concert he was dancing around and even crowd surfing. Apparently his religious views have loosened over the years. Even though that may be the case, he still rocked the concert and was as good as when I saw him before.

dubb trio opened up they really rocked it. i did not know what to expect from this band. but when they started I think they made people like metal reggae a lot. matis took the stage and it ended up being a great experience. the man is so talented with his flow's and rhymes that fumigate the room with a sense of astonishment. he would put the wonderful rhymes into his actual songs, that when played got the whole room moving there body's, and as the room pulsed matis would start dancing while singing and the energy in the room was electric.

I attended the Matisyahu concert held at First Avenue along with a fellow musician. Both of us were amazed at how poorly the performance and set list were developed. There was no musical momentum and very little genuine emotional connection to the audience. Although Matisyahu was the featured performer, his voice was unclear, hidden behind excessive reverb and other effects. As I looked around the room I could see hundreds of equally bored audience members and noticed that many of them were leaving during the performance. At the end of the night I felt drained and utterly numbed by boredom. This show was a huge disappointment.

What an amazing show! The passion and talent of this young man (and band) was incredible. Matisyahu brings a message of peace and spirituality to his performance the is undeniably real and pure. The band was super tight, based around "The Dub Trio" whom also acted as the opening act held the bottom line strongly throughout the generous 3 plus hours they played while Matisyahu moved back and forth like a pacing lion to the beat. The only less than stellar moment was the First Avenue sound system. It needs a makeover, the bass line stomped all over it.

AWESOME! Matisyahu is in another zone. I went to see Katchafire who opened for him but I must say he lit the place up. His presence, his voice, his dance moves, all are beyond what I expected. I love Matisyahu and I have been waiting for years to see him. So I was really excited about the show. The energy was great; lots of love in the room, no crazy people. Everyone performing that night did awesome. Matisyahu was all that I hoped and more. My only complaint was the sound level. The venue was nice looking, and had a great set up, but the acoustics were terrible. I've worked in the music biz and put on concerts that size and larger. So when I say the sound was bad, it really was. It was too loud for the venue. I was surrounded by people complaining about the volume. A couple actually had to leave because the volume was too much. After the show my inner ear and going down into my jaw hurt and actually felt swollen. The day after I had to wear ear plugs and speak in a wisper, because my ears were still in pain. Day 2 and I'm still sore. So I absolutely recommend seeing Matisyahu, I plan to every time he comes back. I just hope its at a different venue, or that their sound guy does better on his board.

Matisyahu sounded so much better live than he does on CD. He was energetic, engaged the crowd, and yet still came across as his humble-down to earth self. I enjoyed his dancing, and his lime green shoes. And he ended his performance with "One Day" my all-time favorite song of his, which was the cap to an awesome night. Tea Leaf Green also had an amazing act. They really seemed to enjoy their music, the crowd, and simply being there playing. Their music was fantastic, and they provided a good pump-up for Matisyahu. Even on their own, they would have been great.

This concert was an amazing experience. The day was gorgeous & the vibe of the crowd was awesome. The opening band wasn't anything spectacular but as soon as Matisyahu hit the stage, everyone jumped to their feet & stayed that way. His energy was amazing & he is just as good live as on his albums, better even. It was fantastic seeing so many different age groups, & demographics come together at one concert. People were dancing & singing & generally having a good time. Matisyahu is definitely an artist worth spending your money on. You won't be dissapointed.

Being a fan of Matisyahu for so long and having never seen him I wasn't sure what to expect. It was simple in presentation and yet exciting. Almost none of the songs sounded like they did on the albums and it was refreshing to see an artist making the concert a unique experience for the audience by giving them new sounds, new mixes, and more. From Matisyahu doing stage dives and being wrapped in the Israeli flag to putting on the greatest encore performance I've ever seen, he's truly worth seeing. If you want to have a concert n which you just gather with people and enjoy good music then Matisyahu is the ticket. Whether you know his work or not you'll enjoy the show.

Best concert I have ever been to. Very personal. He stopped in the middle of the show to field questions from the audience and just seemed very down to earth. After the show he came out and talked, signed stuff and took photos with everyone who hung out. Its very nice to attend a show where the musician isnt hiding from those who got him there and backs up there lyrics with their actions. Thank you Matis for the best show and Valentines date ever for my lady and I.

This was my second time seeing Matisyahu, and it was once again a great show. He played classics that you would expect like Youth, One Day and King Without a Crown. We also heard his new song "Miracle" written in time for Hanukkah, which we did get to celebrate with Matis. He pulled a girl on stage to light the menorah and say the prayers. The one thing that gets on my nerves is the people at the concert. Some of them are very rude, and I've had a bad experience with the crowd at both concerts. Also, it seems like he always leaves out a couple of his most popular songs, so it is never quite the perfect show. This year we missed Chop 'em Down and Smash Lies.

This concert was a very good concert. There were however a few things I did not enjoy there. The opening act was very loud and obnoxious. Ear plugs would have been an excellent item for me to have brought. People near the front were smoking and this also made the start less enjoyable than I would have liked. After moving to the back and Matisyahu came on stage however the concert was truly amazing. He is wicked on CD and better live. He sang with his son, and his songs were not exactly as they were on CD which was a cool thing to hear. Very outstanding.

Serious euphoria colored the entire night. Matisyahu brings together a varied group of fans and they just absorb into the atmosphere of the event and blend together. It's like an ocean of bliss, washing over everyone. There is no one moment that spoke to me the most because the entire time I was in a climactic state of mind. It's difficult to describe going up, and never coming down the entire time. The ground shook with applauding fan stomps before the encore. Simply amazing.

First of all, I LOVE Charter One Pavilion, just always sets a good mood and it's definitely an awesome location. I didn't get a chance to get there in time for the Dirty Heads but I could hear them playing as I was pre-gaming outside, and after I saw them at HOB in the Spring, I fell in love with their music. Matisyahu I have always been a fan of since about 2005 and he rocked the stage- good preview for Sublime but would have preferred the order to be Matisyahu, then Dirty Heads, then Sublime. Oh well- overall it was a fantastic show, the mood was there, the buzz was there and the music was more than expected. There were a few songs I wished Sublime played but did not, but it'a just one concert and you can't always get every song you want. In the end, I was fulfilled with my experience and cannot wait to see them again!

I have waited for 20 years for an artist like this to come along. Matisyahu understands the value and art of performance that was requisite throughout the late seventies through early nineties, but has been sadly lacking for the past two decades. It is infrequent that a talent of this caliber comes along. I was thrilled that his beautiful songs, highly polished in the studio, were great vehicles in a live setting for his incredible voice. He was personable with the audience, interactive, and down-to-earth. After a 2 1/2 hour set, I left feeling like I got my money's worth. I can't wait to see him again. I can't help but wonder why this guy isn't selling out stadiums.

Here is the absolute truth about almost all bands/musicians: They have bad shows and they have good shows. Most shows are somewhere close to average. Sometimes they are tired or not into it and struggling to keep up appearances, sometimes they have energy and are "on" and in a good mood. Sometimes technical difficulties will detract from the performance. And once in a while, a total flop happens, or just the opposite --an amazing performance that attendees remember all their lives. The point here is: All shows depend mostly on the artist's emotional state of mind, but also audience energy and technical considerations during the show. That being said, I want to say I believe Matisyahu is probably the best and one of the few major music stars who I think is actually making innovative soulful, thought-provoking music and performing it in an improvisational way that is quite different almost every time. He's got some great songs and a great band. He's got the courage to be himself. I'm truly impressed and in awe at his courageous performance to a largely hostile audience at the Rototom Reggae Festival in Spain last summer. --Look it up. I became a fan of his after this incident, after not really being familiar with his music except for the song, "One Day." He is now my favorite performing musician after experiencing some of his shows and listening to some of his albums. I've seen Matisyahu 5 times: 1) At the festival area near the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA --He had just come back to the States after a long and at times difficult tour in Europe and told the audience he hadn't slept for 36 hours. Amazingly, he had a lot of energy and put on a great psychedelic show, even though his voice seemed a bit frazzled. Lots of positive energy and an excited festival atmosphere. He was the closing and headline act of Long Beach Reggae Festival. 2) At the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA --Intimate venue, the best Matisyahu show I've seen. Matisyahu put on one of the best technical performances (which I recorded on my phone and still listen to almost daily since November) that I have ever heard. He played an awesome show for about 70 people, even if it was somewhat mellow most of the time. I would say this was my favorite show. One of the best I've ever seen from any artist anywhere. Matisyahu really seemed in a spiritual zone at this show. The jams and beatboxing were awesome and inspired. The crowd had a mostly good vibe (except for one guy who kept yelling for Matis to play "Chop 'em Down" and after almost every song, which Matis eventually played, I think, to shut this fan up). And Matisyahu seemed in a generally positive mood that did not seem forced. Overall, an excellent show that I decided to go to on a whim and bought a GA ticket at the door. 3) At Cal State LA --This was probably the worst Matisyahu show of the 5 that I've seen. It was the night after the Bataclan massacre in Paris and the theater at Cal State L.A. was less than half full (I'm guessing a lot of people decided not to attend considering the events in Paris the night before) Matisyahu seemed a bit ill (it sounded like he was catching a cold), and he had his 5 year old kid running around the stage for the whole show. This was cute for about 5 minutes, and then it became somewhat distracting and annoying. Matisyahu even seemed to show a bit of contempt for the audience at times. But he looked really tired and on the verge of catching a cold. Overall, I have to admit the performance seemed somewhat lackluster. I was with someone who I wanted to share experiencing Matisyahu with and they left the show very disappointed. I was somewhat as well. However, all this being said, I still admire the guy for pushing on thru and performing under the circumstances, especially considering what happened in Paris the night before. Even at this crappy show, there were points where I was somewhat entertained. 4) At The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles --This show for at least 500 people seemed a bit lackluster as well. The "jams" of his songs seemed to go on too long. It wasn't totally bad. There were some moments. Overall, an average show, but not great. He didn't seem very into performing this night. He came on late and seemed to want to leave early. 5) At UCLA's Schoenberg Hall --This show was better than the Wiltern, but not great. Again, there some annoying college-student fans (who pulled out flags and howled inappropriately for hit songs at times), and some technical difficulties that you might expect at an event held in a college music department's theater (the vocal mic mysteriously died as Matisyahu tried to start singing "One Day" so the band just played the whole thing as an instrumental and there was no encore). But this show had some good moments, as well as a cool light show. --------------------------------- So here is my synopsis. Matisyahu is human: he has played some great shows, some average, and some lackluster/crappy ones. I understand both the positive and negative reviews. He has been touring nonstop for almost 2 years and seems to have a full schedule for the near future. I'm a recent fan and I dig most of his music in general. He is one of the most creative and innovative artists around right now. To me, it looks like he needs some rest and should probably focus on getting some rest and writing some new material instead of continuing on a grueling touring schedule. That being said, you might catch a good show, a bad one, or an average one. However, even if you catch an average show, it's still worth going to. Of the 5 shows I've seen, the ones at festivals and small clubs seemed to have the best energy and performances, while the worst shows were in theaters with assigned seats.

This was my first Matisyahu concert and the first time being at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. The concert was scheduled for 8:00PM with doors opening at 7:00PM. I got there at 6:00PM to make sure I got good seats and was the second person in line. This event amazingly had no barrier to the stage and so as soon as I went in and we were told we could stand at the edge of the stage I took a spot just to the right of center with my elbows resting on the stage. This made for tired legs but great vantage point (and thus good pictures), and at the end I got to shake Matisyahu's hand from stage, which actually made the whole concert more enjoyable since I didn't have to constantly be looking over people. There was no pre-show band that night, only an artist who was painting on stage to some music just to mildly distract the crowd while waiting. For whatever reason Matisyahu and his band did not set up until 25 minutes after 8:00 which made the crowd a little anxious but it was worth it all once the concert started. Matisyahu was more energetic on stage than I expected and had several intervals with him just dancing, bobbing his head, skipping around stage, and jumping up & sitting on speakers as if he was just enjoying his band's music as much as we were. I enjoyed the fact that he mixed into his concert several of his older songs like Exaltation, King Without a Crown, and Chop Em Down (my favorite part which I sang along to vigorously), and One Day (saved for last). Some unique moments were when Matisyahu in one of his "jam with the band" sessions actually joined Tim Kieper by walking back to the drum set and played the bongo alongside Tim. Later in the concert Tim actually stepped away from the drums and Matis took the helm and played percussion for a while! Lastly Tim also came out to front stage, sitting on a stool across from Matis, to play a cool looking stringed instrument (possibly a Ngoni), to Matis' beatboxing. It was a ton of fun. The energy and flow of the concert simply has to be experienced. His albums don't fully capture how incredible his singing and the band's playing are. There were lots of head bobbing moments and good memories. Afterward, though sadly despite being told by a few people in the audience about the possibility that Matis might come out into the crowd after set take down he never appeared (though those with VIP passes were called back stage), I did get to speak and take photos with the guitarist Aaron Dugan and the drummer Tim Kieper. This concert makes we want to continue attending future Matisyahu concerts. It was overall a great experience.

I had seen Matisyahu many years earlier at Austin City Limits and elsewhere in Austin, I believe. I've kept up with his new music releases and love his latest album as well. I honestly thought the tickets to this show were too expensive but I'm still glad I went because it was wonderful.

We saw Matisyahu in Long Island on Chanukah. This was my Chanukah present to my husband. It seemed like it would be an incredible convergence, seeing the Jewish reggae star in a quite Jewish area on a beautiful Jewish holiday. Instead, we were surprised and disappointed by Matisyahu's low energy. We've never witnessed any performer give such an underwhelming effort. He didn't address the crowd a single time. An understated shoulder roll was presented as a dance move. Singing stopped mid-phrase, as though the headliner were instead a back-up singer for himself. Lines that, in Matisyahu's studio recordings, had showcased his sweet upper register on high notes, were performed in easier-to-reach middle tones. He leaned occasionally, as though he couldn't keep his body upright. Everyone else -- the band, the set and lighting designers -- were giving the show a good effort. A gorgeous, huge mirrored dreidel was suspended from the rafters and spun slowly throughout the performance. A disco dreidel? Incredible! The lighting person shone the lights up on the dreidel, and it tossed reflections around the room. But that person also threw the lights into the audience so relentlessly throughout the concert that we had to squint and could hardly see Matisyahu's face at any point. It must've been intentional, to cover up the singer's vacant expression and prevent him from being in the spotlight he should have confidently occupied. The show came to a sad climax when a giant menorah was rolled onto center stage, and Matisyahu, barely audible, said the prayers into the microphone as he lit the large candles. A man wearing a suit and kippah (yarmulke), dark beard, and peyos (sidelocks) came onto the stage with a microphone and offered a niggun (wordless melody). Matisyahu hummed or sang along with him at moments, and it was as though the Matisyahu of that night -- who sported a stretched-out, all-white tank top and short bleached hair -- was facing his old self. The juxtaposition was awkward as we recalled Matisyahu concerts we'd attended in previous years, when (while looking like the man now standing in front of him) he had delivered lyrics with fervor and literally climbed up and swung from concert hall balconies. We like Matisyahu's old and new music, and don't care what he wears, but that face-off moment cast the new Matisyahu as an unfortunate shell of his old self. Matisyahu followed the moment by closing with his catchy Chanukah hit, "Miracle." "Do you believe in miracles? Am I hearing you? Am I seeing you?" he sang. The questions were sloppily delivered, but apt.

Matisyahu played a good show... Everyone danced. Loved the venue. Beautiful night to hear some good music under the stars. Show was only 1 hour and 10 minutes and he took two breaks! Really, this guy is under 40.... I've seen musicians in there 60's who play way longer then that! Matisyahu should have connected with his audience more too. I did like his last song when he invited everyone on the stage - pretty cool! I would recommend his concert as it's a fun night out to hear some good original music.

This is my second time seeing Matisyahu in New Orleans. It was a wonderful experience. Even the opening band, which I had never heard of, was very good and a good match for what followed. Matisyahu mentioned having a bad day, but he poured all his strength into giving us a great show. The only thing....I look forward to House of Blues being a non-smoking venue. Heavens, it was thick in there. I was coughing by the end of the show; I don't know how the performers could take it. "One day" as Matisyahu sang, one day maybe they will wise up and become smoke free.

As a birthday gift, I received 2 vip tickets to this show and included was a meet & greet. Matisyahu put on a wonderful performance and invited the audience on stage during the last song. After the concert we went backstage and he was amazing, taking a personal interest in us. He was more then happy to sign various items and posed for pictures. I will never forget that night.

The three bands 1) The Lions 2) Tribal Seeds and 3) Matisyahu were amazing. Just like a snowball rolling down hill, the concert started small and kept building bigger and bigger till an epic end! The venue was amazing, not a bad seat in the house. The staff was friendly, the security was amazing, and the patrons of the concert were like best friends. This was a concert I was glad to attend, and will look forward to attending more at this venue and artist.

I enjoyed the event at Beerfields 2014. The event alone was a great experience. Good people, fun times, and great music. Matisyahu on the otherhand, blew my mind. I loved his music before and now I am even more inspired by the rythme, and beat of his whole entire performance. He graced the stage with superiority and was an=mazing. I felt my soul lift out of my body. The experience was the best ever. I am so thankful to have had the chance to see him perform. Nevertheless, I was right in front and it was a great experience. He also showed much appreciatation for his fans. Thanks Beerfields, but most of all thank you for everything, Matisyahu, you are my inspiration and you have save my soul from pain and sadness. I am so grateful for this wonderful experience.

I have seen his shows since 2005-2006. All different styles/sounds throughout the years. He keeps evolving his sound and his content is LIKE NO OTHER. He is an amazing artist. This particluar show was the last of his tour. I could tell he had to dig deep for his performance. He still brought it - but it wasn't totally over-the-top. At one point towards the end, he was going to stage dive but decided against it - probably due to the 5 foot gap between stage & crowd. This was still an amazing show; We are lucky to have him. We could always hope for more but as an artist; 30 tour stops must take a toll. I will continue to attend all of his shows that I can and you should not miss him if you have the opportunity. Keep Rocking! Much Respect. Till we meet again.

The show was like every fan's dream come true. I recommend people show up early so you can get a front row seat/standing spot because it's WELL worth it. Matis walked on the crowd, people danced on stage with him (he pulled me out of the crowd to dance with him, and then everyone kinda jumped on after) and met him after the show. WHAT AN AMAZING NIGHT. Matis is super kind and VERY attractive!

I LOVE Matisyahu. I love his lyrics, his music, his style, I love EVERYTHING about Matisyahu EXCEPT last night's performance in San Diego at Humphrey's by the Bay. The last time I saw him in concert (last year) he was AMAZING! I tried to see him earlier this year but instead sat for two and one half hours in traffic, unable to get inside of the Del Mar fair venue in time for the show, missed the whole thing and lost the cost of three tickets. So, I was extra excited that he was back in town for a second go and I got excellent seats for last night's concert. The Dirty Heads put on a pretty good show but not amazing, just a good warm-up band for the main event.... or so I thought. Matisyahu looked great, sported sunglasses the entire show and had on some casual cool threads. But where was the Matisyahu performer that I know and love?? He did not show up. The concert was lackluster, the older songs were almost unrecognizable and sparse and Matis simply appeared to be checked-out. I thought perhaps he was really sick but reading the other reviews from weeks ago that say the same thing, I don't think so. Sadly, I will probably not take the chance of spending money to see him again. If this was my first time seeing him, I definitely would not want to spend money on another concert.

Im a fan of matis and was expecting a great show. The Dirty Heads were pretty good. Had the crowd going. They got us pretty excited for matis. Unfortunetly, Matisyahu was a let down. He was being so weird like he was messed up on some drug. He would stand in the middle of the stage and "dance" but it seemed like he thought he was floating. Then he would stand against the speaker for awhile....not really doing much, just standing. He was not very involved with the crowd. Nor did he beatbox very much, around 40 seconds the entire show. The last song (one day) was the coolest part. 1. Because some of the audience got to go onstage (he stood off to the side for a while). 2. It meant the concert was over. Finally, im a bit dissapointed and i miss the old matis.

I loved listening to the Common Kings for the first time. The show I paid to see was Matisyahu and that was when I was disappointed. First, I was thrilled to be in the front row and be able to see everything close up. That had as many disadvantages as advantages. I was able to watch Matisyahu go behind the curtain on the side of the stage on quite a few occasions to toke some marijuana and then when on stage continued to drink alcohol more than water and sit down to observe his band play while he did not engage in vocals as much. I then noticed that at one point his glass of whisky was empty as he went to his guitarist then to his keyboard player and finally found a person on the side of the stage and get a refill. I have been a Matisyahu fan for over twelve years and was really looking forward to hearing his amazing voice. His performance was poor and sad to see dwindle down to a dependence on getting high instead of giving his audience what we hoped for - a relief in today's hectic and sad times.

I've been to a few Matisyahu concerts in the past and never has the bass been so loud I can't hear the vocals. It was so obnoxiously loud we left after the first couple songs (mind you this was after waiting 2 1/2 hours for Matisyahu to come on). We woke up the next day with throbbing headaches and ringing in our ears. If I had known how loud this concert was going to be I would have brought ear plugs or more likely, would have just saved myself the $26.

This was my third time seeing Matisyahu and it was by far the best, he turned his live show into a total jam session, and me being a huge fan of DMB and lettuce and Disco Biscuits I couldn't have been more happy. The base was turned up a bit too loud but it did not have any negative effect on the overall experience. Matis has a great voice in the studio and he can still belt out some songs live his backup band was in rare form they really got it done

Matisyahu and his crew were amazing. Full light show and three hour set, that just kept jamming. We really enjoyed the smaller venue, which provided a more intimate experience. Made friends with many of the other attendees and even an opportunity to continue on by meeting the band at the after party. Not many hotels to choose from, but really not a bad drive back to South Lake afterwards either. Really looking forward to next time!

He played hip hop beatbox sounds, with 5-10 jams in the middle of each song. Music so uncomfortably loud, couldn't understand words. Did not play any of his popular songs. Was nothing like One Day or any of his reggae type songs. Was basically like listening to repetitive dance club hip hop booming with longggg jams in the middle. People seemed to be enjoying it. But it was not the scene I was expecting at all. Seemed like if you were 'baked', then you enjoy. Band took a 20 minute intermission after playing 45 minutes. My wife left at the beginning of the second set to sit in the car. I left about 20 minutes later. If you are going for hip hop, beatbox and jams, then you may enjoy it. If you are expecting what you hear in his recorded music, then you will be disappointed immensely.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Matisyahu perform two nights in a row when he was in Atlanta. First was at the Morris and Rae Frank Theatre, then at the Atlanta City Winery. My friend and I had VIP to the first one, which definitely helped improve the experience. We were front row at that one, and it was our first Matis concert. I won't lie and say it was some high-energy performance. It wasn't. But you could tell he was performing what he felt in that moment, and it was captivating. After the show, he had the VIP people come to his green room to meet with him. My friend and I went in with a dad and his young son (they sent us in groups of 4), and Matis lit up with the little boy. He's a tall guy (6'4"), but he got down on his knees to look eye-to-eye with the kid and even sang a line or two of "One Day" when the little boy asked him to. The second night was at the Atlanta City Winery and I would definitely say that was a more "entertaining" performance. Both were acoustic nights, but I think the energy in the second crowd was all around more enthusiastic. He was a bit more interactive with the crowd that night and seemed much more relaxed. Also, Matis sounds exactly the same live as he does on his CD's. All in all, I loved every minute of it. He seems super awkward up on stage at times, but he's actually a really chill guy. My friend and I are going back to see him ASAP. I read a lot of negative reviews on him here, but the thing is that you have to keep him in perspective. He's not going to be Pitbull up there with his dancers and all the lights and craziness. He's Matisyahu. He's going to be authentic to that moment, and those who go see him perform need to keep that in mind. I personally would rather have that than just some cookie-cutter performance. He's a true artist, and I have a lot of respect for him.
