Buddy Guy

It says all you need to know about Buddy Guy that the music genre that he has come to embody, the Chicago Blues, could never hope to contain him. In the more than 55 years since the Louisiana moved to Chicago and embarked on one of the most influential careers a guitarist could ever hope for (just ask Eric Clapton), Guy is still pushing the envelope of his artistry. But what is remarkable about this Rock N' Roll Hall of Famer is that he isn't sacrificing an iota of his relevancy while doing so. Guy proves it not just in concerts that are as high energy now as they were when he was heralding a rock guitar revolution in the 1960's, but also on the charts.

The grand ol man of the blues is truly getting better with age! Go and see for yourself why Mr.Clapton said Buddy Guy is the best . You won't be sorry! Johnny Lang is the perfect opening act. Super strong performance. His band is tight.

When we bought these tickets, the show starred Buddy Guy. The show we saw last night was the Quinn Sullivan/Tom Hambridge show. While both are extemely pleasant to watch and stars in their own right, the bottom line is we went to see Buddy and there simply wasn't enough of him. His own tremendously talented band, especially lead guitar player, had to take a back seat to a talented, if not precocious 10 year old kid. Had the show been advertised as Buddy/Quinn from the start, we may have still bought tickets but would have had different expectations.

Buddy Guy was phenominal! I have wanted to see him for decades and finally got the opportunity. Even at 80, he still has so much energy and truly loves what he does (and he is SO GOOD AT IT)! Also, his band is world-class! They are all top notch professionals! In short, if you like guitar-based blues, see Buddy Guy while he's still touring. I missed B.B. King when I had a chance to see him and now I will never have that opportunity again...

Purchased Johnny Lang "Meet & Greet" and was not disappointed....!! Johnny Lang rocked the house.....!!! For being 78 years old, Buddy Guy can still perform..... I saw him for the first time in 1986, and besides the occasionally piano or guitar solos by his entourage during this performance, he still rocks it.......

This was my second time seeing the young & old of blues, but not the last, I hope. However, this was my first time @ this venue & even though I usually can't sit still at concerts, I loved it! Jonny opened up & played his heart out.& he's mesmerizing to watch. His music is all heart & soul blues. he doesn't banter with the audience much, but that's not what he's about. Still, though, my favorite CD of his is "Lie to me", when he was just a child. Buddy always plays to the audience & is in great shape for an 80 year old. He always get out into the audience! Loved hearing the old standards from him & watching his guitar tricks. I only which these two would end the night on stage together, at least for one tune!

Buddy Guy is a showman, storyteller, but most of all GUITAR PLAYER. Yes, this man is a national treasure. Buddy makes you feel at home. His interaction with the audience is the best, in my opinion. Buddy has fun on stage and not only does it show, it is also contagious. He makes you feel at ease and like you're the only on he is playing for. This is my second time I have seen him and I will see him again as long as he is able to play. If you ever get the chance to see him, DO NOT MISS IT. This is the last of the great orginal blusemen and he is not to be missed.

Any fan of music needs to add Buddy Guy to their must-see list. He's the last of the great bluesmen and he incorporates the history of the blues into his show. His talent is immense. Personally I love his deft touch and ability to play at all volume levels... from whisper quiet to hide the women and children! Rock and roll fans will love the show too as Buddy shows you where the roots of rock were planted. Just a great experience, what are you waiting for?

Saw Buddy Guy at BB King's Tuesday night. Phenomenal show. Invested in the VIP tickets; well worth the extra money to be closer to the stage and a bit less crowded. Had some confusion about type of seat, but it worked out. Be prepared to assert yourself a tad...the staff was swamped. Buddy Guy played from about 9:15 to almost 11:00. Great rapport with the audience. Even at almost 80 years young, he is still one of the best guitarists in the world. Brought out some "youngsters" to play with him. At the end of the show there were 5 guitarists playing the blues.

This man will give you a trip down memory lane playing the great music of Muddy Waters, Cream and some Jimi. I love when he plays his songs but his show is awesome from start to finish! When he starts steppin watch out, hes coming for you. When he walks thru the crowd its amazing to get up close and personal with a living legend. I followed him all over the venue and we wound up at the concessions stands where I got a selfie with Buddy! I touched his back and was in awe! a total AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA moment! Buddy Guy is one of the very last of the blues Mohegans, but at 79 years young, he has more energy, passion, talent, stamina and likeability then ANY modern act could ever hope for. Blues is alive and well in Buddy and his energetic show, backed by the Damn Right Blues Band, never fails to uplift your soul or satisfy your crave for genuine music from the genuine article. From the opening original Grammy winning song, "Damn Right I Have the Blues," to the Cream's "Strange Brew," to the slow tear jerker, "Feels Like Rain," this two hour plus performance will keep you on your feet....especially when Buddy steps off the stage and continues the show while walking up and down the aisles and engaging with the audience ( a constant gig trick he's been doing for audiences since he first saw his blues heroes doing it in Chicago blues clubs when Buddy first watched them perform). This is a five star show from a five star Guy (pun intended). Now if he only got the Ramblin Dawgs to open for him when he's in the NJ/NY area, it would be just that much cooler... For us anyway!!!

I have seen Buddy several times, and I do believe he's gotten better each time. His band is also phenomenal! They show that superb artistry has no limits-when you're great, you're great and that's what they are! The loss of one star, goes to the venue. There were only two food trucks, and part of the facilities was not acessible. The venue itself however, is a great place to see a show, and our seats were wonderful! We had a great time at the show Saturday night. The opening act was Ronnie Baker Brooks, son of Lonnie Brooks. Ronnie had me from his very first song, an original that he wrote. He was very gracious and thoroughly entertaining. Then Buddy Guy came out and he performed longer than expected, or at least quite a bit longer than my info from Ticketmaster had indicated. We were pleasantly surprised. At one point, he even came into the audience, and not just the front row. He and his guitar, along with a couple of security guys, came all the way up one aisle, across the back of the theater, and back down the other aisle, stopping at several points to play and sing in place amidst the crowd. I should also note that both performers had fantastic backup bands with special kudos given to their 2 keyboardists who were phenomenal in their own right. Both Ronnie and Buddy gave high praise to the Joliet audience and said they would come back anytime. All in all, it was an excellent concert in a beautiful venue with great acoustics.

You should never miss the opportunity to see this living Blues legend! He always puts on a great show, with lots of awesome blues guitar work. His audience banter is entertaining, he responds to shout-outs with funny quips. This was my 5th time to see him, and I've never been disappointed. The Star of the Desert arena is the perfect size for shows like this. Standard stadium seating on the sides (but lacking cup holders), and hard plastic portable chairs on the floor. Good sightlines all around when the artist keeps the stage uncluttered. Sound was good except for the constant buzz from the left PA. It was really annoying during the quieter moments of the show. Don't know if the house equipment or the artist mixer was to blame. Limited assortment of food & drink available, at the expected high prices.

2nd time to see BG and he put on another great show! BD is one of the last old school blues men and he can still sing and play that guitar. He played for 90 min's straight and was very engaging with the audience plus he walked thru the auditorium getting up close and personal with many concert goers and let a man in a wheel chair strum his guitar. Buddy played many cover songs (and played them very well), my only wish was I'd like to have heard more of his original stuff and a couple of acoustic songs.

Buddy Guy educated us and entertained us with the blues, going from subtle to all out fuzz. Ana Popovic who looks like a model surprised us with her virtuosity on the guitar. This was most evident when she came back to play and trade licks with Buddy. She more than kept up, and sounded so much better with Buddy's sound system than her own which was s but muddy at times.

The first time I saw Buddy Guy was over 20 years ago. So when I saw him March 18, 2015 I wasn sure if he would still be in top form (He's 78 now) but rest assured that he did not disappoint. There is a good reason Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 23 on there list of the 100 top guitarists of all time. He is ever the showman, playing with one hand, playing behind his back and strolling down the aisles to give the audience an up close and personal show. The opening act was Serbian born blues guitarist Ana Popovic. In her relatively short career (She's 38 compared to Buddy's 78 years) she has learned a lot and can hold her own with the big names of the blues. Buddy brought her out during his set and they jammed together on a tune. It was fantastic to see the different styles battling back and forth and then come together to bring the song to a crescendo. If you get a chance to see this amazing living legend, do it. He is 78 and I hope he will be playing for many years to come but eventually he might stop touring. Although right now he shows no signs of slowing down.

What a great performance by one of the greatest blues man of all time, the way he run the show tells me of his long career, so many stories to share and what a great musician he is. The young man he introduced at the opening has so much talent ... hopefully I will see them again in a near future, outstanding band all together. A great experience and I will recommend this show to my friends.

Buddy Guy, at 78 years young, delivered a fantastic show in the Historic State Theater on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2014. He moved on and off stage while playing his guitar like someone in their twenties. Buddy insisted we listen to the quietest note of his guitar so we will understand the power of his blues music. I thought I would see an aging legend sitting on a chair playing his music, but he never sat down and his voice and guitar play was as good as ever. Buddy Guy was amazing.

Had tickets to see Buddy in Mankato in 2013 and after the warmup band performed it downpoured so the concert was cancelled. We were very bummed but then found that he was coming to the State Theatre and his show was amazing. Buddy Guy is very personable with the audience. He travels up the aisles playing and singing, throws guitar picks out to the audience and tells stories throughout the entire evening. He took his guitar up the main aisle, up the stairs through the balcony and my son was coming out of the bathroom up in the lobby when Buddy Guy came through. Buddy stopped to pose for a photo with my son and that made that night a very memorable one for us! I love his music and Robert Randolph was also very amazing! A++++++ rating for a great end to the summer:}}}

This was the fourth time I have seen him, and this was possibly the best show he has done. Granted, it's always a great show, but it was just him this time. I like Quinn Sullivan and Johnny Lang, but Buddy usually has them come up and play most of the song for him. Not this time. Highly recommended if you are a blues fan!

Buddy Guy was, as usual, spectacular. What I wasn't expecting was a 15 year old Quinn Sullivan who opened up the show. He can do anything with a guitar that I've seen from the best, Clapton and Hendrix included. Buddy Guy, of course, knows how to work a crowd, and amused us with several anecdotes from his long career.

I have seen these guys three times although buddy guy is a legend you really can't say much but Amazing. However seeing Quinn Sullivan for the third time at such a young age just seems to get better and better not that he wasn't good the first time I have seen him.

My wife says it's the BEST SHOW she can remember and I agree. Jonny Lang opened the show with a couple of new tunes starting with "Blew up the House". AMAZING!! Jonny Lang BLEW ME AWAY!! His non stop shredding and instant transition from belting out emotion with his guttural voice to SOULFUL guitar riffs was nothing short of Stevie Ray Vaughn. This guy is the greatest blues guitar player I've ever heard. I had seen him at a festival before and it was good enough. This show was at an intimate, sit down venue which was PERFECT. Jonny Lang feels every note and sells out every lick. I have no idea how his hands survive through the show. He has a really unique way of playing. His hands go from picking to strumming to pinching and pulling all while his face contorts, hair flies and toes curl. The whole body is Blues Possessed. GO SEE HIM. Buddy Guy is a long time staple for me in the blues arena. I've seen him at countless festivals and ALWAYS go to see him play. I just love listening to his stories and watching him work the crowd and his guitar. He and BB King are the last of the living legends and everyone needs to see them. Buddy Guy especially. He is 77 Years Young as he'll tell you himself and he struts around like Mick Jagger. I have no idea how those skeleton hands can still tear up a guitar, but they do. He shreds from open to close with some slow songs and stories thrown in to break up the fast pace. Buddy Guy is a Blues Icon and should be treated as such. He truly still impresses me after many, many shows. Showing no signs of slowing down, Guy takes his time walking through the crowd being awed like a God. Pictures popping all around, he doesn't miss a note and owns the place. The band was also FANTASTIC! Buddy's keyboard player is the BEST I'VE EVER HEARD. This guy made me wish his EXCELLENT SOLO would never stop. Cool Band. Bottom line on the longest review I've ever written. This is the passing of the BLUES TORCH You MUST GO SEE THIS SHOW WHERE EVER YOU CAN. MAKE PLANS NOW. Jonny Lang is the real deal and doesn't get enough pub for his music. His new album has some great new tunes and his early couple albums are all time classics. If you miss SRV, here's the best thing since and I feel...EVER!

Buddy never fails to bring it. I saw this same lineup in San Antonio last year and since that time he has updated some of his stories and the presentation in general; if you have seen Buddy very many times, you know coming in what to expect including the stories. He was fresh, on his game, and just typical (awesome) Buddy. I brought my brother, who has never seen him before. This is probably the 4th time I have brought a "newbie" to see Buddy and they always leave the same way 1) as a new fan to Buddy 2) in awe of how good he is and what a showman he is. He looks like he has another 10 years in him easily, but at 77 I am going to see him every chance I get.

I have attended a ridiculous number of concerts during the last four decades and have been lucky enough to watch many of the Masters live. You have some individuals who are unbelievable singers and can blow you away with their range and passion. You have others who can play a musical instrument like it has become an extension of their body, or those whose body seems to have evolved to play a specific instrument (I am sorry Mr. King, but you are not supposed to be able to bend fingers the way you bend your fingers while playing the guitar). Still others are celebrated showmen, adding some dancing or other antics to their performance ~ at times covering for aspects of their presentation that may be lacking (insert any elaborately choreographed pop artist you want for this example). Very rarely, and I mean VERY RARELY, do you find someone that can accomplish all three. Just from some artists that I have watched live; Sinatra could bring down the building with his voice, but aside from an occasional punch / kick for emphasis, he was fairly restrained on stage (more of a storyteller) and did not play an instrument. B.B. King and Eric Clapton are simply brilliant with a guitar and both could serve as a "voice" even if they didn't have their insane skills in this area; however, it is common for both gentlemen to relax on a chair or stand fairly stationary during a performance. David Lee Roth and Fee Waybill of the Tubes come to mind quickly when I think of showmen and can recall "performance" in addition to play and song. While each maintains an incredible on stage presence, Fee has some limits in original works and Dave's voice has always been a little rough live (understandable with his experience and on stage efforts) ~ and while quite good, anyone would have a hard time placing them in the top "insert number here" of guitar players. The proverbial "triple threat" is almost impossible to achieve and with Buddy Guy, you find someone who accomplishes this feat without even trying (well, obviously he is trying but he is so good and has so much experience that it appears as if he isn't even trying ~ see definition = true brilliance). In this one man, you find one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk the earth, a self taught master who can change styles in the blink of an eye and play the works of other masters with one hand while walking through the audience to get a drink at the bar. Pick, drumstick, bar towel, or whatever else happens to be within reach to drag across the strings becomes part of the show as he chastises you about your performance on the melody. His voice can stray from a Son House classic in the Mississippi Delta playing hide and seek with an acoustic guitar almost too quiet to hear, to the boom of a full orchestra with a Chicago style that would flatter Muddy Waters or Howlin Wolf. He is the consummate showman and will simply amaze you with his performance. His on stage persona is that of a friend with a little more wisdom than a smile that bright should have. You leave the show feeling as if you have some sort of personal connection to the man and wishing he would have played just one more song. At some point, you will realize that he is rapidly approaching eighty years old and you will be even more amazed that he put on the show that you just watched someone that could have voted for Eisenhower. If you have not seen him live, do yourself a favor and make an effort to hit his next show, even if it means blowing your entire concert budget for the year on one show; it's worth it!

The Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival Pre-Concert with Buddy Guy, Percy Sledge, Ruthie Foster and Shakura S'Aida exceeded all expectations - already high before it even started. The evening started off with Shakura S'Aida in the first hour slot. Her performance was slick and very well received...I think in the future, Jackson area music fans will recognize her name! Ruthie Foster lived up to her billing as the modern queen of the blues, performing a program of blues and gospel-inspired blues that had fans calling for more. Percy Sledge was a nostalgic favorite, and of course his world-famous When A Man Loves A Woman brought down the house. Buddy Guy is a top notch entertainer, not question of that! His set, lasting a little more than an hour, featured a range of blues tunes, a demonstration of blues guitarists ranging from Willie King to Jimi Hendrix and back again. Buddy got up close and personal with the audience and we loved it! His "Skin Deep" was especially meaningful to all present. The Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau, with the assistance of BluesSouth's Alex Thomas created a truly memorable evening for a very appreciative crowd. The bar is set high for the rest of the Festival, August 16 and 17...my recommendation...don't miss it!

This is the 3rd time I've seen Buddy Guy and I have to say he is a Blues Legend. I've seen him a couple of years ago with Quinn Sullivan and this kid has a natural talent to carry on the Blues. I also like the fact that Buddy goes out in the audience when he plays, it's very personable and shows that he likes and feels comfortable with his fans.

Buddy Guy is a veteran bluesman who still has what it takes to move an audience. He broke 2 guitar strings and that's a testament to his talents. He sang some of his own standard blues numbers as well as a repertoire of tried and true favorites. He has great rapport with the audience and people responded when he asked them to sing along. His guitar playing is what brought me to B.B. King's and I was not disappointed. As a special treat, Quinn Sullivan, a 14-year old protegee, opened for him and later joined him again onstage. Buddy sure knows talent when he sees it and this young man is the future of the blues. His guitar talents are unbelievable and the fact that he performed at the Garden at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival proves how talented this kid is. This was one of the best shows I have ever seen at BB King's.

I've liked Jonny Lang from his first CD. So I guess I was looking forward to more of the older stuff. That's not what I got. His set consisted of the more gospel type music, like Angel of Mercy. I was looking for I Am or Cherry Red Wine....NOT EVEN Lie To Me. I got none of that....not even a bit of Jimi or Stevie. Its only because of my own personal song preferences that I was slightly disappointed. Buddy Guy on the other hand rocked it. I saw Buddy up in Chicago 12 years or so ago up at the Metro, a small theater setting also. He rocked then, and hes still rocking the shows today. New music, old music and some mix and remakes. Similar to the first time I saw him, I love how Buddy interacts with the crowd and gets the crowd into the show. A complete entertainer and at 66, that's awesome. Thumbs up to Buddy's band as well, The Damn Right Blues Band. Buddy opened with Damn Right I Got the Blues and into Hoochie Coochie Man and ended with a medley mix of Hendrix, Creme, etc. Would I recommend this event to a friend? Hells to the Yeah...to a friend and ANY fellow blues fan. GO SEE BUDDY GUY!!!

Johnny Lang was very good and showed his versatility as a musician and singer. Buddy Guy was off the charts!! That man is the ultimate showman!! He was entertaining from beginning to end. He played a wide variety of blues and told some amazing stories. Came out into the audience playing and singing for about 20 minutes, main floor and even into the balcony, He gave it his all and at 76 he is still a remarkable entertainer. After the show he autographed items for the people up by the stage. It was a fun night!!
