The book related to this play I was very familiar with and had read before. But, the perfomance was superb. I did not realize that I had been sitting for a 1.1/2 and watched two people perform without worring about the time. I also enjoyed the Q&A after the performance. I would recommend this to anyone, young and old alike.

Enjoyed a very special evening with His Abysmal Sublimity Screwtape. Thank you Max McLean for bringing your inspiring and devilishly funny performance to West Michigan. Beckley Andrews' agile and animated interpretation of Toadpipe was spot on. As the Wall Street Journal so aptly critiqued, truly "one hell of a good show."

This was a show that focused totally on the dialogue and the acting. The material is very thought provoking and made you pay attention to the nuances in the material. The acting (only one main player) was very good also.

Max McLean is incredible! Elise Girardin is captivating. The Progress Energy Center is welcoming - hostess/ticket taker at entrance to Section H (4:00 p.m. production) was personable. Everything came together for a stimulating, thought-provoking, wittty, wonderful evening! An old saying but apropos - if Screwtape is in your town, run don't walk to spend an evening with Max McLean; he did CS Lewis proud!

C.S. Lewis' words are as relative to today's world as it was when he wrote them during Worlld War II. With a spare set, the play allows the brilliant words to shine. Max was an amazing Screwtape, and his mastery of the script- all words entirely his character's, was impressive. I can't wait to see the next production from this team.

I've read the book several times so a lot of the dialog was familiar to me. Good thing because the actor spoke quickly, with an accent. Five people in our party thought the monologue was often difficult to understand. Toadpipe was all mime and fun to watch!

It was a bit hard to follow in the beginning. We sat in the front row of the Loge and it was difficult to decipher what was being said with the accent and the speed, it was just a lot of mumbling unless the lines were being shouted with passion. So the beginning was somewhat slow because of this. I noticed that the 2 gentlemen sitting on either side of me were nodding off.

As a fan of C.S. Lewis I was excited that a play was coming based on the book "The Screwtape Letters." I was not disappointed... rather I was amazed. The actor portraying the Chief Tempter was outstanding. He played the part; which was a two hour period of being the tempter... acting and speaking for TWO Hours! It was funny and serious and made you think. I loved it... My friend who attended with me also enjoyed the performance. We are both looking forward for another C.S. Lewis based production to come our way soon.

Brent Harris performed an astounding monologue. The character portrayal is fantastic and the production company created a great audience buy in. If you have never read the book you should probably read to get a feel if this is your sort of production. If you enjoyed the Screwtape Letters themselves you will LOVE this portrayal of it.

The drama was captivating because it presented relevant issues we followers of Jesus Christ are faced with in our daily lives. It sheds light onto how critical our everyday decisions are in changing us more into the image of Christ or into slowly dying off into a cold, hardness of heart. In a humorous way, it alerts us to temptations we may not have been aware of before watching the drama. Also, it makes us keenly aware of how mighty our spiritual weapons are against our enemy, the devil. I walked away being strengthened in my faith.

I was absolutely blown away by The Screwtape Letters and feel so fortunate to have experienced this amazing show. It was brilliantly designed and perfectly performed. The simplicity of the design, with every set piece, prop, lighting, and sound effect carefully chosen to deliver the maximum impact, allowed the actors to fully utilize each and every element in their performance. The character of Toadpipe was the perfect auxiliary presence on the stage, and the actress was a remarkable performer, with all of her movements and gutteral sounds enhancing the intensity of the moment or adding the perfect comic relief. The actor playing Screwtape was, in a word, brilliant. He created the most marvelous villain--suave and then sinister, composed and then irate, conniving and then vengeful. The entire audience hung on his every word (with flawless delivery and dictation) and every movement. The script itself was adapted perfectly for the stage. It is a beautiful thing to watch a work of theatre and not only enjoy the performance but also be stirred by the truth of the message within. This show (and the book it was adapted from) gave me many opportunities to reflect on its application to my own life. I hope and believe that every member of the audience left the theater better off in every way for what they had just witnessed.

A phenomenal presentation. What an incredible recall of the monologue! Even though the set pieces did not change, the action of Toadpipe, and the wonderful expressive acting of Screwtape, the audience's mind never wandered and stayed attentive. If you are a CS Lewis fan, you definitely want to see this! If you are not, see it and you will be. Brent Harris was brilliant as Screwtape! He had the perfect combination of evil and humor; and how he delivered a monologue for nearly 2 1/2 hours demonstrated his acting genius. He portrayed a demon with great skill and believability. Karen Eleanor Wight knew exactly how to portray a slimy, cowering, fawning creature who injected into the monologue at the right moments, adding, again, just the right balance of evil and humor without ever saying one actual word. I enjoyed the contemporary references as well.

Max McLean does an amazing performance as Screwtape. Unbelievable that one person can memorize all those lines and deliver for over an hour. The play is only him and another character that doesn't say anything, so the brilliance of his acting is front and center! The play is just the right length and the subject matter very entertaining and thought provoking. He did justice to the great CS Lewis.

The production matches the magnitude of the content--profound and provocative. Whether Christian or not, this performance is relevant. The critique on the human existential condition is raw and honest, and the actors deliver it with finesse. Brent Harris, the actor who played Uncle Screwtape was a delicious cross between Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irons, and Karen Eleanor Wight, the actress who portrayed Toadpipe, was a master at mime and provided comic relief. The staging, costuming, and overall spectacle were top quality--all well-balanced and well-suited, never detouring into melodrama or farce (which is a trick since the set is located in Hell). Calling it a sublime experience wouldn't an exaggeration.

I read the book and enjoyed it. I was unsure how it would translate to a stage performance. The writing was well done to keep the feel of the book in the performance and while some necessarily had to be trimmed they did so in a way that stayed true to the story. My wife had never read the book and she also enjoyed the play enough to the point where she now wants to read the book. The visual spectacle was fantastic. Set design and costume design were impeccable and beautiful. The actors did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life.

This play was basically the visual adaptation of an audiobook. There were no metaphors, no change of scenery and no sense of anything new that the book didn't give. The 'show' consisted of one character (two if you count the demon rolling around screeching from time-to-time), and while he had good articulation and remember his lines extremely well and all-in-all was a good actor, the show was just dull. I expected much more from a stage performance. Not a happy customer.

I enjoy reading C.S. Lewis, and I believe that one does not need to be Christian to appreciate his satire; some do not understand it, however. As I was standing outside the theater, and man and women began to speak to me questioning my assumptions on how this novel could be adapted on stage. Having purposely forgone reading any write-ups or reviews on the play adaptation, I was thinking a Two Rooms feel. One side being Wormwood (obviously with creative leniency) and the other side Screwtape and his assistant Toadstool passing the letters back and forth (I was close!). The man told me that the reviews said it was "wickedly funny", and he didn't see how the play could be a comedy. C. S. Lewis' satire elluded him. Max McLean brought that humor to life. He spoke with nauseating sarcasm, which I'm sure slapped that gentleman in the face screaming, "Hey! This is funny!" However, Screwtape's portrayal was sometimes over-the-top and cliche. McLean performed flawlessly, but in this writer's opinion, the in-your-face sarcasm with a Frasier-style, American Dialect was not needed. The audience did not need to be babied and coaxed into laughing. I felt the same for Toadstool. The actor turned him into comedic relief spoon-feeding the audience: "Laugh at me!" Overall, the set was great! I loved the mailbox and the lighting making the mail look as if it was going up a shoot. They did not do it the entire time which helped keep it from being annoying and provided great pacing at the climax. McLean's sign off of every letter was hilarious, and as his mood deteriorated, so did his line. He provided great beat changes keeping me enthralled with his character always guessing how he would react with each letter. The costumes were beautiful especially for Toadstool. The actresses movements were believable and entertaining. Also, McLean kept his air of aristocracy seen frequently, and his moments of weakness were well placed. I would recommend this play to those who have and have not read the book. PS My husband, who falls asleep at every musical I bring him to, stayed engaged and entertained the entire performance. Plus, it did not drag on making it two acts. Thank goodness!

One man monologue of Christian paranoia about how the devil controls the public (referred to as "The Patient")by using the TV, famous people (Hollywood) social acceptance. The sermon includes instructions for Christians to not back down and not to accept watered down versions of the their leaders teachings also reminds Christians not to blend in with society, and not to marry a women who is 'in fashion' or is not as Christian as you. If you're not looking for a Christian IN YOUR FACE show, just don't go as there is nothing subtle or clever about this show. It felt like I was back in Christan summer camp in 1992. Lots of empty seats and a strange sound system setup in New Orleans added to the misery.

My boyfriend and I attended together on Thursday night and had no idea what we were walking into. I was thinking it was a full sized show. The lights and sound seemed to suggest that as well, but about 3 minutes into the play, we realized it was a monologue. About Christianity. Whomp whomp. At least that was my first thought. But the script was good and the actor was GREAT. He was able to keep the audience captivated throughout (noted by laughter and other audible signs). He weaved the tale well and surprised me with a few twists and turns in his character and voice. It is a tall order for one man to talk for 90 minutes on the same set and not lose half the audience, but he did it. And well. In the end, I'm glad I didn't know about the plot. My boyfriend never would have joined me (he's an atheist) but I was pleasantly surprised by the whole evening. Hats off to this talented man.

I wasn't sure how they would put together a play on a series of only one side of a book of letters. I loved how they expanded the character Toadpipe without changing the letters or plot line. I highly recommend this play to anyone who has ever questioned the existence of God and/or Satan. Anyone who is on the fence on whether or not they believe in God should see this. It is a great eye-opener to the "lowerarchy" of Hell and why Satan is so bent on our destruction. I would suggest reading C.S. Lewis' book first before you see the play because it will make more sense and help one get more out of the play. For example, when Screwtape talks about the Law of Undulation it helps to have read the book before the play (this law simply means the ups and downs Christians go through in regards to their Faith, prayer life, etc). Overall, I would recommend this play to all of my friends! One last thing: it was amazing to see this play only had a two person cast. Both of which are needed and that will make more sense once you see the play Best regards!

I took my wife to The Screwtape Letters at Stephens Auditorium in Ames. Everything about the show was top notch. The staff at Stephens was fantastic, polite, helpful, and professional. The seats were comfy and as a man of girth I appreciated the space of the seats and the walkways. There is a lot of room between the seats for people to scootch past you, totally comfortable. The show itself was better than I expected. The producing, directing and especially the acting of the storyline were phenomenal. The addition of toadpipe was a tremendous adaptation to the original story and helped drive the show. The acting was top-notch. What a great show which forces us as an audience to ask questions and define for ourselves what we believe.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this monologue of C.S. Lewis' Srewtape letters! The acting was excellent. We hadn't read the book and only knew what to expect from the description. We both felt that C.S. Lewis had great insights into human behavior and his perspective in this play brought this out in seriousness, wit and humor. Though not the spectacular setting I was expecting, the Screwtape Letters was a great time. Both actors executed their parts magnificently. Although there are only two actors in the whole play, it keeps your attention and is completely enjoyable. I'm not sure I would say the $60 ticket price is what I would pay again. I think a more reasonable price for such a play would be $25. I've been to local theatre performances that charge much less for tickets and yet the overall play is much more engaging. All in all, it was a great performance and a nice time at the theatre.

Screwtape was simple with just two actors but it really kept my attention. It was 90 minutes with no intermission and I could not believe it ended so quickly! Giving advice from Satan's point of view keeps one thinking and it also speaks directly to each person. Screwtape's advice is not much on the major sins but more on the "minor" sins such as pride, self-centeredness and complacency. It really keeps you thinking.

I was disappointed to find out t,he play was a monologue. The guy apparently knew his lines but I think $50 a ticket for a monologue is a bit much. After reading the book I had no idea how it would be translated to the stage. All I can say is WOW! Brent Harris (Screwtape) never missed a beat and for 90 minutes had the audience in the palm of his hand. The performance was amazing and not to be missed if given the opportunity to attend.

Screwtape Letters was a true masterpiece. Our attention was held from beginning to end, and we were a little sad when it was over. I will definitely go back to see it again. As a Christian and fan of C.S. Lewis' work, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the book come to life on stage. It was just a brilliant work of art. Do yourself a favor and go see for yourself. You will surely not be disappointed. I am looking forward to the Great Divorce when it comes to our area.

The Screwtape Letters was absolutely wonderful. It is amazing how two actors can bring alive the writings between an uncle and his nephew. The parallels with society are so true and really hit home. It is definitely a must see!

Very true to the book, yet updated to current day, CS Lewis fans, in particular, will enjoy this play. Acting is heroic with 90 minutes of continuous witty dialogue all from one actor. But it is the aftermath that makes the experience worth the most: the recognition of Wormwood whispering temptations and, thanks to that recognition, an ability to reject more of them!

Very well acted, but a bit slow. My wife and I brought our 17 year old son, and he was terribly bored. I found it intellectually interesting, but the written version is better so you can reread passages for understanding and nuance.

This rendition of The Screwtape Letters made C.S. Lewis' book so much more accessible! Extremely entertaining and thought-provoking. AMAZING acting. You won't regret seeing this! And you don't have to have read the book to understand.

By the 3rd Letter I adjusted to the language and rapid speak. I became immersed in the world of spiritual warfare.. I am but a vapor here today and gone tomorrow, a mere 90 min play in the war for my soul. I am less than nothing to the underworld and not valued but for gnashing of teeth. I was amazed by the stamina of Brent and how He was able to convey the words of C.S. Lewis so full of depth and meat of every sentence that He spoke...I could hardly keep up from devouring one sentence to the next...It was a ride of enlightenment and gratefulness to know that OUR God has concord the very devices that were laid before us by Lewis and Brent. I have a new verse to keep close...James 4:14 [a]Yet you do not know [b]what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Like the eternal world, we are only a 90 minute challenge...a mere droplet in a bucket...we are here, to get to there...Wherever there is. How way live our lives and stay the course... One degree at a time will point us in the direction we have secured for ourselves...Grace and unmerited favor has been promised to each of us...if we choose back. I hope that The Screwtape Letters will keep playing...I would love to see it again and again...I have felt a change and I only hope that others will go into the play empty and open to what God wants for them through this journey of cold hard reality...Love is what I ended up wanting more of...God Is Love.

Srewtape Letters is a very thought provoking and profound book to read, so I wondered how this would play out on stage. I was pleasantly entertained and thoroughly enjoyed the production. The stage background and characters costumes were creatively designed and the actors did a superb job of engaging the audience as well as performing this challenging material. I would really enjoy more plays of this caliber.

This is a very deep and intense work, but it is presented in a way that is not difficult to attend to. Definitely food for thought. My only criticism was that the lead may have unintentionally mixed his American and British accents at one point, although the intended alternation is generally very helpful to distinguish a point.

Wow...how impressive that only 2 characters can portray such deep and deadly creatures, intent upon mans destruction and descent into hell. C.S. Lewis nailed it with mans weaknesses and the dark side's ability to manipulate and twist those into a denial of Christ's offer of forgiveness. The audience was moved to a standing ovation for the excellence of acting, script, direction and production. Thank you for a wonderful and though provoking performance!

Amazing...had read the book beforehand, and wasnt sure how they would translate a series of letters to the stage. The main actor was simply incredible...threw himself into the role, kept me and the audience engaged and enraptured the whole time. Sets, lighting, and a supporting actress supported him, but he really carried it and was fantastic. The Q&A with the show producer afterwards was also great; he provided great insight to how a show like that comes together, and what the "ministry" of the show is.

Highly recommend! The actors are amazing and talented and the story line gets you some chuckles while making you think of your actions and "being there" in these situations created in the play.

It was great to see the stage adaptation of Screwtape Letters. I loved the way they added a dimension to the story by creating a character to display the imaginations of the tempter.
