Gotye

Singer, songwriter, and musician Wally De Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, first appeared upon the Australian music scene in 2006 with his self-recorded album Like Drawing Blood – an effort that yielded his first local hit, “Hearts a Mess,” and won an AIR (Australian Independent Record) award.

I could not believe how light the crowds were. I have never seen the Pavilion so empty. Too bad because they missed on an excellent show. Gotye was and is a TRUE artist. Fantastic personality and sense of humor. The songs sounded perfect. Glad i got to see him...up close due to the lack of audience, I was lead by an usher to a much closer seat than the one I purchased!! Lucky me!

I will NEVER forget this night. Every single one of the performers were so full of energy, it really made the crowd going. Jonti was surprisingly really good, and I thought it was adorable how energetic he was and showing how much he's really into the songs. He was fantastic! GIVERS were amazing as well. They were so full of energy, jumping all over the stage, they were incredible! Now, onto Gotye. I can't even describe what I felt when he started performing. He's just so absolutely creative, played every single instrument, sang with such passion in his voice.. I was in tears when he performed Bronte. I knew every single song he performed, therefore I enjoyed it so much! I also love how he performed a lot of songs from his older CD's. I was singing at the top of my lungs.. Ahhh. I definitely wish I could relive this night again. Gotye, you better come back to Miami! I recommend his concert to ANYONE.

Loved his music for the past year - was very excited to see live. His music sounds best live - one song i wasn't keen on sounded 1,000 times better live and now i love that song too. Kimbra wa first and good - also good vocals and music but also impersonal . You would think being NYC. They would both talk more- when he left the stage he simply walked off- almost like he couldn't wait to leave. However he's talent is great both vocals and playing. Would see again

Fun concert. Kimbra's performance was a very good surprise. Gotye's performance was great. I loved the percussion moments. And enjoyed Gotye's little talks. During his play, the films shown on the back screen were a little different than the ones we see on his videos. That was a good change and it was interesting. I felt like "hm did I really see all the video versions?!" On the low side. one light hurt my eyes for the first 15 minutes. Then my ears were sad not to be able to hear Kimbra's beautiful voice, the music covered her voice. Gotye's voice though could be heard better thanks to his lower pitch music. I would have appreciated a slightly lower volume. Oh, and I was highly surprised to see beer selling at the event and waitresses walking between the people during the concert.... Last, come on people! when it is asked "no video/picture from your cellphones"... Respect.

Gotye is extremely talented and put on a damn good performance. The animations played during each song were intriguing and added a positive element to the show. He's a little quirky in his comments and just seems like an average guy having fun playing music, and being himself... captivating the audience the entire time. As far as the venue goes, I feel like it was a poor choice by management. I will not go to this venue again. The show was switched to the TowerTheater in order to allow more ticket sales. Well the venue is a true theater and the General Admission 'floor' area.. was just pick your own seating not a standing open floor. Coming from Baltimore, MD we did not arrive until after doors open so all the front rows were already filled up. Of course there are random single seats between people but no one was encouraging the guests to switch seats and allow other groups to fill those logically. Regardless, even from 2/3 the way back you could still see everything ok and get a full view of the stage. For the encore we did walk down and stand in the isle for the last 3 songs he played which was the best part of the show.

The man is a genius. I have never loved every song from one artist before. He is also just a wonderful guy. My daughter and I hung around after the show with around 50 or so other people and Gotye took pictures and signed autographs for every one of us.

The show was well produced with great visual effects including captivating animation that coincided well with the music. The musicians performance was tight and they had a large array of unique instruments that made for an interesting show. It would have been better if the show ended without the encore which sounded like a Sesame street version of a Boston album.

This is my first time see Gotye live and I loved it! He was just as good live as on the album. If anything he was EXACTLY like on the album. There was very little change or embellishment. But they are all impressive musicians. To play drums and sing at the same time and how they masterfully layered all of the sounds, I was really impressed. And I'm really glad I got to see them in an intimate setting before they go big.

I really enjoyed the encouraged crowd participation throughout. The tribute mantage shout out to the amatuer youtube covers was very sweet, heartfelt and funny. Wally's vocals were on point and very clear. The change up of a few of the musicians from one instrument to another felt likened to a Mad Hatters tea party which gave the generally low key musical style a visual disturbance to keep you interested and engaged. The backdrop was thought out and appropriate. The concert as a whole was a lot of fun. some would say it was slightly intermediate but I prefer that over an over-produced jaggernaut artist any day.

The show was fantastic. The music was great, and you could tell that they were having a lot of fun up on stage. Really loved and appreciated that they came back after a good half of the people had left after playing Somebody That I Used to Know to come play some more songs for about half an hour. Cheers for that, Wally :)

Gotye was amazing. He sounded great, and had a huge screen behind the stage that showed his videos along with the songs. In Gotye style, it was very creative. I wish I could have seen the stage better, though. The House of Blues is probably the worst venue that I have been to in a long time. If you are not one of the lucky ones to arrive at the time the doors open, you can forget about getting a view of the stage. I had to duck and weave to see the performance in two second intervals. There are also huge obstructions on either sides of the stage. The acoustics are also pretty poor. I do not recommend the HOB if you can help it. Again, Gotye put on a good show. I would see him again.

Gotye was fantastic lived up to our expectations in every way and then added some more for the encore. Leading up to the headliner we enjoyed Jonti and Givers, both were great acts as well; Jonti a little more experimental in the way he combined the use of beatpad, electric lunchbox and other unidentifyable instruments. He gives a whole new meaning to "one-man-band". Givers were equally unique but with a more raw vocals, guitars and drums sound - we were very pleasantly surprised! They rocked it out. Of course Gotye and band were truly amazing, musical mastery at its finest without being readily classified. I'm very happy that we're finally discovering music in the U.S. beyond crap-pop again. It takes us a little longer to catch on here but great to see artists like Wally getting exposure. You can tell he loves music and exploring all the possibilities still untapped.

Gotye is a musical genius. He plays so many instruments himself and truly puts on a wonderful show. He was energetic and amazing to watch! Unfortunately, his opener "Jonti" was a pitiful thing to watch. He was banging around in much the same way my children did when they were toddlers playing on the Fisher Price keyboard. "Giver" was better but once they got on stage, it was late and everybody was tired. The seats at House of Blues, if you can get one, are uncomfortable at best. My back still hurts two days later.

I knew that Gotye's sound was innovative, but didn't realize HOW innovative until I saw the concert live. I've never seen instruments like some of the ones on stage! Some of my least favorite songs on the recent album ("Making Mirrors") were my favorites performed live. First off, the venue is a great place to see a show. The opening band was so good that I actually bought a cd, even though I've never heard or seen her before. Gotye was fabulous! In fact, their famous song "Somebody that I used to know" doesn't really do them justice. I found them to be sort of between Coldplay, and Radiohead. It's not very often the lead singer is a drummer, but it works! Would recommend the show, and would definitely see again!

I was not sure what to expect at the concert. I bought my tickets when his song, Somebody That I Used To Know, was a mega hit, but nothing really good came after that. I was concerned that the show would be lacking in good songs, not knowing anything other than his hit song. That concern vanished within one minute after he took the stage. BAM! Spotlight!! Percussion!! It was on! From that point the show was electric, filled with heavy percussion songs and unique guitars from his band members. Keyboard players, including himself helped create songs that held your attention. The background projected effects complimented the songs. He never really "talked" for over a minute at a time, and often not at all between songs. He slowed it down for a few songs, but that didn't mute the show, it just added another dimension. When he did play/sing his hit song, the audience stood on their feet and sang along. I would certainly recommend going to one of his shows. This show was in the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, a relatively small venue, so the "closeness" helped in my opinion. Go see him!

I guess Atlanta crowds just don't know how to shut up during the music. Gotye and Missy Higgins were fantastic, and the majority of the crowd was okay. But it really only takes a few drunk, entitled apples to spoil the bunch. During "Bronte", a very somber song that Wally (Gotye) wrote for a friend whose family dog was dying, some drunk heifer behind me was screaming at the top of her lungs "Wally, I want to have your BAAAABBBYYYY!!!!". Seriously. This happened. In brief, the band was fantastic. Wally's a machine, darting from instrument to instrument, singing and playing like a man possessed. The band matched his energy, and their love of performing came across. I only wish more of the crowd had been paying enough attention for the first 2/3's of the show to give more of that energy back. At about the 2/3 point, they did "STIUTK", which set the place on fire, and then a bunch of people left. These were the people who I wish hadn't shown up in the first place. Then it was like the kids had gone to bed, so to speak. The crowd/band energy exchange became frenetic, and it was like a completely different show. It seemed even the band was kind of taken aback by it. My wife and I were pretty happy about it, and so seemed everyone else. We all stood and stomped and clapped after the end of the show, refusing to leave without an encore. After about 5 minutes, they came back onstage and did 3 or 4 rip-roaring numbers, continuing the "second show", culminating with the openers all coming on stage for the last song and everyone banging on or playing some instrument all together while Wally and Gotye's drummer had a drum-off on two kits. It was amazing, fun, introspective and expressive, all at the same time. It was a thing of beauty. It was Gotye. Most shows I've been to in Atlanta have been like this. A number of folks who want to see the show who have to endure intoxicated people who just want an excuse to go out, spend money, get ripped and be seen themselves. At the end of the night, my wife and I could look back and say was had a good time, and there were some really memorable moments at the show. But if you're one of those entitled, obnoxious fans who thinks I'm there to see you (and ATL seems to have NO shortage of them)- grow up.

There's the music and then there's the man behind it all. Gotye's music came at the perfect time. Just when I was losing all hope for anything original and fantastic, Walter de Backer shows up on the scene. Granted, he's been popular in Australia and Europe for a while, but he's just getting started here in the U.S. and I love him! I think he was pleased and surprised to see that he filled the venue. Personally, I wasn't surprised at all. And he and his band delivered. Great line-up of songs, the videos that accompanied each song were incredible, and Wally is a great performer. It was perfect, really. What made it better was being able to meet him in the Lounge Room afterward. What an amazingly genuine, polite, and I must say it - handsome (ok - he's hot) man! He was generous with his time while he made his way from one waiting fan to the next. I just wish I had something substantial to say to him other than, "You're brilliant. Our entire family loves your music. Please come back." And I was really wishing I spoke at least one of the many other languages he speaks; my 18-yr old daughter and I happily stood by just inches away from him while overhearing him speak Belgian to two people from Belgium. I wish I could've understood what they were saying! He's just super cool. I wish him the best!

The House of Blues in Boston is a great venue. Kimbra and her band were tight. Having Kimbra there was more of a double-bill than an "opening act." Gotye was really great. The music sounded awesome and translated really well in a live show. The animations were really cool and suited the music. The person I was with thought the animations were a little distracting but I thought they blended well with the music and were sooo him. His talent obviously extends past singing and creating music. Jonti wasn't that great. He definitely has potential but has to fine-tune his craft. In the time he played the crowd seemed bored. Missy Higgins was great. I had never heard her music before, but she engaged the audience. She has a great voice and the songs sounded well-crafted. It was more pop-y but you could still appreciate her music if you were more rock. The lighting for her set wasn't that great. Overall, Gotye was great, sounded great, the lighting was great. He was very funny and goofed off on stage. And of course who doesn't like an Australian accent? He's obviously very talented and showed that by playing lots on instruments and rocked out on the drums often. I wished he could have played longer though, he set was about 90 min. Overall, a fantastic show.

I first heard Gotye perhaps 4-5 years ago on Radio Paradise, an online radio station that has been responsible for introducing me to a lot of new, interesting, and lesser-known music over the years. The song most played was "Heart's A Mess" and while I really enjoyed hearing it, I didn't pursue more of his music until his single "Somebody That I Used To Know" came out this past year. I heard it before it blew up on the radio (and online) and knew then that he was someone I needed to check out more and see live if I could. By the time he came around to the Bay Area, he'd become popular enough to fill the relatively large Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and for an artist who had never toured visibly in the area, that's pretty significant. With that new-found fame came some issues however, at least for fans. The Bill Graham Civic experience was crowded and I had a fairly poor view from the floor. But even so it was a good show. It was plain to see that Wally, the front-man, is an incredible musician and vocalist, and that his song writing talent ranges much further than even the fairly disparate major singles I'd heard before, mentioned above. I had in fact already delved into the album he was touring on at the time and really enjoyed the range of material there. In this particular show he seemed to stick mostly to newer material, with a few older songs, and the fact that it was only an hour and 15 minutes (or so) probably speaks to that fact. I was disappointed in the short length of the show, I must say, but still the energy and performance on display was worth it. He has a talented band, he himself is a multi-instrumental whiz, and his unique voice has a surprising range and power to it. Definitely one of the more unique artists to go mainstream in the past 10 years. Since this show I have been to see Gotye a second time and that was even better, with a much longer set, and an incredibly choreographed projection/light show (I've already written that review). So with 2 out of 2 shows being good, I'd say odds are pretty good you'll enjoy him too.

This was an excellent concert. Sound was great, voice was great, instruments were great, they had everything going for them that night. Coupled together with the cool weather and chill crowd (no singing and dancing for this venue) it was wonderful. Great stage presence and superb audio engineer for this show, perfect volume level.

I thought the concert was great! I loved the videos that played, I thought the band sounded just like the recordings and getting to the see the instruments was very interesting. It also looked like Gotye was really enjoying himself too. He smiled alot and seemed to be having a great time!

Opening act was too slow, too long. Gotye came in for the last hour by which time we were ready to go home. Total waste of money.

I loved the performance of Gotye he put on an awesome performance and is very multi-talented .. But unfortunantly Houston TX (The Woodlands) made it extremely embarrassing and i felt ashamed to even be apart of this crowd when people were talking very loud while the performance was going on. Then getting up and leaving after his number one hit song in America was played. Really people? if you couldent hang and you were getting bored because the other songs didn't appeal to you then wth would you go and spoil it for others? I think the employees could have done a better job in escorting ignorant people out of there. It definantly took away from the concert although I tried hard not to let that happen. I wouldent blame him if he wouldn't ever come back to The Woodlands or Texas again!

I first heard Givers a few years ago in a sports Bar in Beaumont Texas. They captivated me that night and since then I try to follow their success and catch some shows! High energy great instruments, great music! Gotye was great too, only heard a song or two on the radio, now I will go buy their cd! Great night!

I loved every minute of the show. Jonti was adorable and fascinating to watch. He also had a beautiful voice, sounded a little like John Lennon! Givers were awesome! Tiffany banged the crap out of those drums! She rocked. They had great chemistry on stage. And now for Wally De Backer....he is the most gifted, amazing, incredible musician. He played every inch of the stage! He is very serious about his music, but also knows how to have a good time. Met him afterward, and he is the sweetest, kindest, most humble man on the planet. I also met Ben and Lucas. They were so nice and easy to talk to. Really cool guys. It was the best night of my life!!

The show was OUTSTANDING ... the Givers were truly entertaining. It's always enjoyable to learn about and hear NEW LOCAL talent. Gotye was absolutely AWESOME!! His music is truly amazing and the talent he possess is like no other. The music is POSITIVE and definitely worth listening to. I've been enjoying Gotye but, this show provides me with a entirely NEW respect for him as an artist, as a performer.

Wow, what a show. The song State of the Art was amazing. I was not a huge fan going into the concert, but it blew me away. Use of "techno" music was real interesting. The other band members are very talented as well. Really enjoyed the show!

I bought my tickets based on others reviews, and while I would agree he is very talented and puts on a great show, he does not have enough great material for more than 35 to 40 minutes. I really enjoyed the first few songs, none of which I had heard before and then he started on a few fillers. The couple in front of me actually fell asleep. When he finally got to "somebody that I used to know" I was ready for bed! Great artist, but too green without enough great material to carry his own show. Glad I went but will wait for a few more albums before I go again.

Jonti was energetic and innovative. Missy Higgins was soulful and incredible. Gotye, however, was experimental, intellectual, and the most musically intriguing performer I've ever seen! While most people came for his top 20 hit Somebody That I Used to Know, they left wanting every album he ever made. Well done, and thanks!

Loved this concert! So exciting and innovative! And Gotye, or Wally De Backer, was so much more personable and animated than he has been during interviews on television. His band is as fabulous as he is so seeing that play between them was so much fun. Gotye is a very talented drummer and that was highlighted in his live show. I LOVE drummers! Also, there is nothing better than watching an artist play Red Rocks for the first time with that incredible sense of awe that it brings out in them. We are soooo lucky to have that venue so close by. If he ever comes back into town, I'll be there!

First off Jonti was pretty good, if a bit dorky but his music was sweet. Then came Missy Higgins, my main reason for being there as I have been a fan since she debuted in 2004 when I was living in Australia! I saw her in 2004 in Sydney and she is even better now. Such a beautiful voice and great lyrics and melodies to her music...the new stuff is just as good as the last two albums. After her came Gotye (got missy to sign my ticket in between shows, yay!) and I have to say I was surprised. Only knew his one popular song and it isn't even his best one! Bought his album on iTunes while he was still playing :) Overall a great night with a friend of mine and awesome music!

The concert was wonderful. Not because of the seats or anything, but because I finally got to see Gotye live. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of my seats but they were better than nothing. There were a lot of empty seats that said they were full on this website, and I am kicking myself in the butt for not moving closer to the stage. But I am an honest person, so I didn't. The speakers were amazing and worked well, the screen played crisp visuals on the background. In all it was a lovely experience for me, even though I didn't like my seat so much. I also wish this website sold the meet and greet passes, because I did not know where to get them from. So unfortunately I did not get to meet him.

I've been listening to Gotye for a while now and I can finally say that I've seen him live. Man is he good. He sounds just as good as he does on his records, if not better! Also, his infamous artwork/animations, shown in many of his music videos, played on a huge projector behind him the entire show. Bottom line, go see Gotye! All of his music is so artistic and unlike any other.

Missy Higgins did a beautiful job and I really enjoyed her performance. Gotye had so much energy and enthusiasm. Wally and the band had great chemistry. The entire show was just mesmerizing. The music was even better live than on the album. Wally truly shined. His voice was so strong and he played almost every instrument under the sun. It was simply a remarkable evening. I want to go back and experience it again and again.

Missy Higgins who opened for Gotye made a fan out of me! Gotye put on an excellent show. He didn't stand still for a moment - playing drums and all sorts of percussion. He has an amazing voice and his music lures you in to another world - his. I give the musicians 5 stars but the venue was lacking. There isn't much elevation from the front to the back of the seating which means many people are standing and walking by in your view of sight. Also, there isn't any coverage for when it rains! I would have loved to see both artists in a more intimate venue but they are too big for that now.

Not often that you will see percussion at this level. This band is very talented. The show was moved to the Tower theater, which is a much better venue than Susquehanna bank center. Amazing visual display (on giant screen behind the band) that added to the performance and enhanced the music. I saw this band in May when they began this tour. They have improved and enhanced their show in the past 4 months. This is the kind of concert that stays with you.
