Land of Talk
LAND OF TALK IN CONCERT:Indie rockers Land of Talk blend poetic imagery with dynamic arrangements to give ticket buyers an experience that’s both thought-provoking and exciting. Frontwoman Elizabeth Powell contrasts wistful melodies with overdriven riffs and harmonically unresolved chords, and audiences can’t help but nod their heads to this rousingly lush sound in concert. Her sweet, heartfelt vocal delivery is also a true treat for fans, lingering in their heads long after the last chiming chord has sounded. The rest of the band packs a powerful punch, adding barreling basslines and booming drum fills to the poignant lyrical sentiments of songs like “Some Are Lakes”, “Young Bridge”, and “Speak to Me Bones”.

The sound was great, and Elizabeth Powell was the most engaging I've ever seen her. A good mix of earlier music with a lot of the new album. The band finds a way of creating loud dissonance without it being just noise. The full band was a treat..

The band was great in the way that they sound like the album (not worse, not better). The problem I think was the audience. The encore was short and the lead singer wanted to slow things down, I believe due to some overly excited young men in the front. Speak to Me Bones, my fav song of their's, was not played. I hope it wasn't for this reason. A song that addresses gender being limited my some drunk dudes up front would be all the more depressing. Opening acts not memorable. Bartenders and bouncers were nice though.

Have you noticed the explosion of Canadian Indie Rock over the last 10 years? It seems that any product from Montreal seems to be just plain good. Land of Talk is no exception. Elizabeth Powell's stranglehold on your attention never loosens and she will draw you deeper into a rock-fantasy of passionate story telling. In the same performance-heavy attraction you get from Emily Haines, Lizzie Powell reveals the depth of her intimations and whims behind the eclectic pop-friendly post-progressive folk indie rock. Make sure you see Land of Talk perform. Then buy all their albums.
