John Oliver

John Oliver has been a writer and correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart since 2006. As a result of his popularity on The Daily Show, Comedy Central asked John to write and star in his own one hour stand up special, Terrifying Times, which premiered in April 2008 and was subsequently released on DVD. In 2008 John starred in the Mike Myers’ movie The Love Guru, and is currently appearing in a recurring role in the NBC series Community and his own series for Comedy Central, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show. John has had multiple Writers Guild and Emmy nominations for his writing on The Daily Show and in 2009 he won the Emmy Award for Best Comedy Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series.

John Oliver was terrific! Even his opening act, and I'm ashamed to admit that I forgot her name, was great! My wife, son, and I laughed outloud. Oliver was brilliant and very topical. He gave quite a bit of attention to Chicago- we have a lot to laugh at. Thanks for a great show! On the other hand, the venue, while having a great stage, has the absolute least comfortable seats for the audience imaginable.

His British accent says it all. I could stand being insulted as an American whilst listening to his accent. Very topical humor, and love that he could be witty on the fly (our audience was shouting things back to him, which made him crack up). Best night of comedy ever!!

The recent performance of John Oliver at Houston's House of Blues was incredible. I've enjoyed him greatly on the Daily Show and seen his one-man show on TV, but to see him live in an intimate venue like the House of Blues was very special. Much of his material seemed new, although there was one story about the teddy bear his friend gave him, that I had heard before. And he did a great job of interacting with the audience (trying out his best "y'all"; and almost getting it down) and dealing with a particularly obnoxious and drunk patron who was heckling him. Al in all, he really delivered the goods and it was the highlight of my weekend to see him.

Two opening comedians and a good long set by Oliver. It wasn't the funniest show I've ever seen (that honor would go to Paul F. Tompkins or Maria Bamford) but we were happy and got our money's worth.

John Oliver is even funnier in person than on the Daily Show. There's more breadth to his material when he's on his own, although political and social commentary remains a core theme. I love his deadpan sarcastic insightful views that poke fun at everyone, including us, the audience. His timing and delivery are impeccable.

I was a bit worried that after 7 or so shows, that John Oliver's last show might be a bit weak, but I needn't have been concerned, he is a consummate professional, a gifted, witty, talented, incredibly smart performer with a generous spirit. Thank you, Cobb's, for bringing him to SF! What a great gift and wonderful way to start the New Year. I might be old enough to be his mother, but now also have a huge crush on him. Any man who can make me laugh that deeply is irrisistable. Thank God my husband laughed just as hard and holds the same admiration! Lilly Wong was also great, I would love to see her again. Leon, the Daily Show producer, seemed pretty low key in comparison to the others, he might have been tired. His material was good, but his energy was not as vibrant. Being a recovering TV producer myself, I would say it is a good trait to have a mellow personality on staff of a show as intense as the Daily Show, and seeing him boosted my opinion of the behind the scenes show culture. My face still hurts from laughing so hard, and it sure felt good!!!

Oliver has a gentle way of poking fun at American eccentricity, while at the same time complimenting us for it. His observations can be droll, witty, incisive or obscure, but he delivers them in a positive upbeat manner. He's the Brit we'd all like to call "friend".

His assessments of the United States failings are spot on. He's smart to balance these truths with some observations about his own county. I really appreciate Cobb's no heckle policy. The few in the audience that did get weird were well handled by Mr. Oliver.

John Oliver has been a favorite of mine since the first time I saw him as a correspondent on The Daily Show. During his stand-up routine at Foxwoods, his brilliant sense of humor and impressive intellect were reflected in full force. Though I wouldn t hesitate to buy tickets to once again see John Oliver perform live, I will never again attend any event at the smoke-filled Foxwoods Grand Theater. John Oliver deserves 5 stars, but the venue, only 1.

We saw this show in 2015 and loved it, so when we saw it was coming back to our general area, we knew this was how we would be spending NYE 2016! The Fox Theatre is ridiculously gorgeous. This show is such a great way to bring in the new year because it's so fun and upbeat. Most of the stories were the same as last year (much of the content here is from the tv show John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show), which was my expectation. Who doesn't love watching their favorite things over and over? John Oliver also brought in local material and current events. My favorite part from last year was when he was looking up about weird things on his phone. In the Dec 31 show, someone mentioned the former Detroit mayor's convictions and John Oliver went with that and segued into the history of Chicago mayors. This highlights his adaptability and ability to engage with the audience. It sounds like the Dec 30 show had sound issues, so I'm glad we went for the 31st because I really liked the opening person Brooks Wheelan. Super relatable and funny! I like how John Oliver's stories meld together and have a positive message. John Oliver always seems like he enjoys his work, which makes it that much more enjoyable! I guarantee you will leave feeling great!

As we have come to know, John Oliver performed with energy and enthusiasm, reaching out to his audience with his tremendously likeable personality. It was a pleasure to be there. Seeing John Oliver's standup is a lovely complement to what we see of him on This Week Tonight. The show is full of outrage and f-bombs. My 13-year-old son loves the show and it's been an interesting conversation starter and introduction to our country's issues and how we consider them. Standup John Oliver is completely different and surprisingly appropriate for a 13-year-old and a 46-year-old. He is self-effacing, tells stories that keep the narrative thread very well, and convey both whimsy and a bit of wisdom. Moreover, we celebrated NYE 2016 by laughing harder than I've laughed in a really long time.

John Oliver did a great standup routine. He clearly enjoyed himself. He was extremely responsive to the audience. John Oliver's stand-up was even better than I had expected. I'm a big fan of his show on HBO, and I'd seen a few of the stand-up specials that he hosted on Comedy Central, but this show blew me away. The way he mixed stories about his life with discussions about politics and current events kept the show fast-paced, and always going in unexpected directions. John Oliver's stand-up performance exhibits his ability to both convey and portray fun, clever, meaningful stories to create an enjoyable and immersive experience. He showcases his mastery of communication through verbal imagery, repartee, and a personable stage presence. John Olliver was just as funny in person as on his show. He did a little less political stuff and shared some stories about himself. Several times I laughed until tears came rolling down. I would definitely go again. Only problem the whole night was getting into the theatre. Like most, we came in the side entrance connected to the garage. The line was snaked around 3 times and backing up the exit to elevator and stairs. When we got closer, saw there was only ONE GUY for security checking bags and wanding everyone. It took so long that we started hearing the warning bell for seating. Finally they sent two others people over to help. Better planning on the theatre's part would have prevented this terrible mess. Fortunately, most everyone was good natured about the delay and the show started a few minutes late so noone missed anything.

I went with a few friends and we all had a great time. The opener was decent but unprepared so his set didn't flow all that well. Going into the show, we had a mixed group - two of us love John Oliver and watch his show religiously, one of us is liberal and find him funny but hadn't seen his show, and one of us is conservative and had never seen any of his work. What can I say? If you know and enjoy John Oliver's distinctive humor, you will love the show. However, the security procedures left a LOT to be desired, especially at this particular venue. The audience had to wait in the extreme cold for 45-50 minutes while each person was wanded, and some were searched, Yes, we were out of the wind, but essentially still in the parking garage, even though there was a nice warm vestibule (WITH BATHROOMS) that could have been used. Being half-frozen reduces ones' enjoyment, and the show started about 30 minutes late since it took so long to get everyone inside.

John Oliver s brand of comedy is rare in that it doesn t sloppily rely on raunch to shock laughs out of the audience in order to keep his jokes afloat. What a treat this show was. Oliver's humor was as great as I expected it to be. No disappointments. His humor flows easily; the time flew by. It was hard not to ask for "More".

The "tired young father trying to make his 20s clothes work because it'sbeen laundry day for weeks, and god damn it they may be wrinked and stink of pot and thats probably shit on your shoe but mybe I can just rub in in the grass real hard." look. Opener was a bit cliched Party Gurll, but could have honest potential.Keep doing what you need to get there, wherever it ends up you'll enjoy it...

John Oliver is great; however, he said the same things the last time he was in Chicago. I had hoped for more topical jokes, commentary given the crazy year.

Even being a hardcore Oliver fan and having seen almost all his comedy, I still enjoyed his performance as if it were the first time I was seeing it. John Oliver brings an energy like no one else. No one does comedy like him. I heard great comments from patrons of all ages. Absolutely great show.

While I'm a huge fan of his show, Last Week's News Tonight, I was a little worried about how he would be with a live audience. I shouldn't have worried, John was awesome! Great show, laugh out loud funny - worth every penny!

I saw John Oliver on New Year's Eve and thoroughly enjoyed his show from the moment he stepped on the stage until the moment he stepped off. His style of humor is both clever and witty; I truly did not want the show to end. As for the opening comedian, her acts where crude, not funny, shocking, but not humorous. I say this not as a prude, but as someone who appreciates a bit more clever humor over raunchy material.

Everything we had hoped for - very funny, intelligent humor, good timing, A real pro but also a nice guy. Humor is great when it is honest, up to date, and well delivered - all of these apply. My only complaint is that he never said all people named Oliver can come on the stage and say hello. As Oliver in my first name, it would have been a good thing if he had an Oliver-related event. I am willing to overlook the lack of Oliver solidarity, as the rest of the show was good.

I have watched Last Week Tonight for a while now, so when the opportunity arose to see John Oliver live, I couldn't turn it down. He did not disappoint. The opening act was funny, but Oliver had me laughing from the moment he set foot onto the stage. His witty commentary on modern events and politics is spot on. It was an honor to ring in the new year with him.

John Oliver is very funny and he did not disappoint in his stand up routine. This was a great way to spend New Years Eve.

Having seen his show Last Week Tonight, I was wondering if he would only make political, topical, and current event jokes. But his stand up gig was evenly different, showing the breadth of his comedy. Among the best stand up events I have ever seen, live or on TV.

Classic John Oliver. We saw the 10:00 New Year's Eve show. I am not sure who selected the opening act. Unwatchable in every way. Maybe they pick someone really awful to distinguish Oliver's material and quick wit. She should go back to Naperville and stay.

John Oliver was great with his incisive wit. He tackles sensitive issues like police shootings and pointing out the absurdities of politics. My only complaint was the opening act; she was not funny. Crudeness and vulgarity are not a substitute for wit. That is why I did not give the show five stars.
