The Brian Jonestown Massacre

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE:With a moniker that namechecks both The Rolling Stonesí multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones and one of the largest cult tragedies of all time, The Brian Jonestown Massacre are always ready to bring a freaky experience to the stage. They start with a psychedelic ë60s sound and inject a healthy dose of riff-based rock to get fans shaking their money makers. On favorites like ìAnemoneî, ìPishî, and ìStraight Up and Downî, the group lets it all hang out with their trippy revelry of jangly guitars, insistent beats, and reedy organs. Frontman Anton Newcombe leads audiences through this mind-blowing journey, providing both the hypnotic melodies and spacey guitar solos that have become the bandís hallmarks.

incredible show. anton's distinctive lead - a haunting and soulful mash-up of spaghetti western and 1967 london/fillmore acid rock - and the incredible musicians he's teamed up with created an event that was simply riveting....but not so riveting that I was not asked by the house staff to get down off of a padded bench in the balcony where I was wildly and joyfully dancing :-) :-( I want to be a go-go dancer for future BMJ shows. I'd go all night, just like they did. anton has been his own worst enemy in the past, to a heartbreaking degree (watch "dig!"), but in this performance (and from what I hear, this tour), he manages to walk an almost-shaky tightwire where he is alternately endearing, affectionate, wickedly playful, wildly temperamental, and always enjoyable. it was a joy and a privilege to go on his ride may 7 at the paradise in boston, 2016. I wish I knew the names of his musicians, but on stage that night was his loyal musical brother joel, fronting on tamborine and other percussion; 3 guitar players (including anton) - with occasionally a 4th when the keyboardist picked up an acoustic - solid, thundering bass (who I think is also an original member), as well as a tireless, powerful young drummer reminiscent of michael shrieve's blow-out virgin performance at woodstock (santana's "soul sacrifice") in 1969. the weaving of those 3 guitars, each doing their own responsive and hair-raising thing, always subtly led by anton, created something transcendent and utterly transporting. they played for almost 3 hours, and I can't wait to see BJM again. as my companion said, "that was not a concert. that was a happening". so true.

Wow what a show! The band was super upbeat including Anthon who looked in good shape. They played a 20 or more tight song playlist and were right on. I meet the definition of one of their songs(geezer) and have seen and heard an s load of music and these guys are right on top. Thankyou Anthon and your band for continuing to put out some the best music out there.

Brian Jonestown Massacre was awesome! Everything I hoped for. These guys put on a great, no-nonsense show. Anton Newcombe is incapable of writing a bad song. Magic Castles was a great opening act too. Pretty nice venue. If I didn't have to work for a living, I'd go to more of their shows.

Founder Anton Newcombe and BJM originals Matt Hollywood, Ricky Maymi, and Joel Gion make me happy. Add two (some songs three) more guitars, a bass, drums (sick drummer, btw!), and keys and the wall of psychedelic sound is immense. You can feel it in your bones and that's a very good thing! With a song catalog numbering in the hundreds, most of which were written solely by Newcombe (Hollywood has contributed several gems), as well as this year's new release, Aufheben, the 2 1/2 hour show balanced the old with the new in a satisfying way. There was little left of the personality conflicts and ego issues that a casual fan might have been hoping for if they know the band from the killer documentary DIG! but that's a great thing. Loved the sound at the venue, too. Come back to ATL soon, boys! Love you!

The guys of BJM were amazing! It was my first time seeing them live and my second time at the Wiltern. I know one of the guys and even though i'd never listened to them much until this past year, i wanted to give it a try....This show was just what i needed! The opening band was great,i hate that i couldn't catch their name...And although usually i'm a right up front, standing by the stage kind of girl, trying something different and sitting in the mezz was a nice change...Everyone sounded amazing, and it was definitely worth it...

The band sounded ok at the beginning. However the sound system was a huge problem. The sound was distorted and after awhile all the songs started to sound the same. Not at all like their albums. Also after they thought they had the sound figured out, the volume increased to unacceptable levels and we were in the balcony. we left in the middle of the show.. Very disappointed.

They were so amazing! CANNOT WAIT to see them at the Wiltern in May! This is the best band in America and one of the last true rock n' roll bands. It's totally unfair that bands way less talented than them have way more acclaim. Go see these guys if you love rock n' roll! The only band as good is The Verve and they don't play anymore so if you want to see perfection on stage, GO SEE THE BJM!

Classic BJM show as usual. They played all the favorites plus one new song I've never heard. Matt Hollywood was awesome and Joel chimmed in on "Got my eye on you". I little shorter than most of their shows, but still awesome. Love the venue, can't wait till their next tour.

I went into the show with high expectations, I've been a fan for years but this was my first chance to see them live. The band took a few songs to warm up, but once they did it was a sonic explosion! Extended versions of Sue and Satellite were awesome and they played #1 Hit Jam that I had been screaming for all night! It was awesome! Next tour when BJMcomes to your town go see them!

It as great to see BJM finally. I had been trying to catch one of their shows for years. They sounded great. Sound quality in the club is good, and it was a mellow crowd. I have no idea who the opening band was, I dont think they introduced themselves. Whoever they were, they need a heckuva lot more practice. Lots of winces and shrugs from the audience. Too bad they didn't play their song "On a Hill Far Away". Anyway, go see Brian Jonestown Massacre if you can.

Love love love BJM. This was an amazing show (a bit shorter) but the 2 hour set really hit all the marks. Saw them at the Paradise in May of 2016 and they played 3+ hours. It was the best live show I've ever attended and I've been to hundreds over the years. Anton is a creative genius and crazy talented, Joel is cool, and the band sounds so great together. This is music that feeds my soul and leaves me craving even more. Could see these guys play again and again for hours and hours and not tire. If you ever get a chance to see BJM live, do not pass it up. Please, come back to Boston again real soon! As far as the Paradise goes; been going there since early 1980's. Good small venue close to home. Have seen many great shows there. However, what's up with the muffled sound from the right upper deck of the club? I always try to avoid being in that area at all costs.

If you missed the Brian Jonestown Massacre in the 90s and early 2000's you missed seeing rock 'n' roll debauchery and a melange of jangily, raucous, hook laden tunes. If you miss them now, you miss a professional, tight knit rock band that has worked its way into one of the best live bands ever. Their output is more prolific than ever and the quality has never wavered. Try naming 5 bands that can say the same. Not to mention, the members are incredibly down to earth.

Well they played for about three hours, fried a few amps, cursed a few fans and made some of the coolest music around. Anton was in fine form and the rest of the band was on its game too. The set was an eclectic mix of old and new and the delivery was superb. I'm glad to see the younger folks are tuning in to the terrific music they make. One of the best concerts of the year I would think. My first time to the Teragram Ballroom and I was very impressed with the sound and the venue overall - I'll be back.

I didn't know what to expect, having travelled 750 miles into another country, to a venue I'd never been in, and seeing a band I just started to enjoy only a few years ago. But man, I was blown away. Ballroom was nice, adult beverages reasonably priced, tickets were affordable, and the band... Brian Jonestown Massacre rocked it for nearly four hours! No opening act, they just came out and played, and played, and played. All of it was excellent, and at one time Anton said, "I know this is a long concert, but we have more songs," before playing on.

Opening act Asteroid #4 was outstanding. Venue is first rate - state of the art lighting and sound. BJM had its moments but most of the show seemed uninspired and I had to witness Anton abuse the audience (some was Deserved) but his berating of the guitar player onstage because of amplifier issues went to far. Disappointing.....

I have seen this band three times now and this is by far the most amazing experience I have had with this band. With every song the music got richer and deeper. I thought without Matt Hollywood, who sings many of my favorites, the concert would be somehow missing something. I was completely wrong. The BJM is as strong a band as ever!! The venue is small, and comfortably sold out. I never wanted there 3 hour set to ends. Even though I had to stand the whole time and have a foot issue. This is an experience I will remember the rest of my life. Only problem is that I only bought one night of tickets. Should have bought all tjree dates!

Great music. Great performance and execution. Great vibe - thanks Anton for keeping any negativity reigned in. 5th time seeing BJM in Boston and this is most likely the finest performance of all shows. Professional and the music was just other-worldly. If you haven't checked out recent BJM release 'Pish' do so. It's already a classic! Great rock n roll played and composed the way it attitudinally should be.

1st BJM show and it was amazing. The opening act Weird Owl was fantastic. I was not familiar with them at all and left very impressed. Anton seems to put a lot of thought in the set list which did not disappoint. A great mix of new music and the classics. I felt as if I was on a musical journey from the first note. "Yeah Yeah" sent me into an uncontrollable frenzy. "Open Heart Surgery" was fantastic as I fell into a hypnotic state. Phenomenal show that ended a bit prematurely as Anton displayed his utter disdain for anything less than perfection. Great show! If you get a chance to see these guys do it. You will not be disappointed.

Wow- the band was in fine form at their Cleveland show, playing to a sold out house of long time and younger fans. The band appreciated the spontaneous welcome cheer they received and went on to play a 2 hours+ show, with lots of Jams, and a multiple song encore. Fans hung in there and were great source of energy for the band! Audience developed communication with Anton, and he tested us a few times to see if we knew the song was over or not, depending on what we wanted (ie, you get the BJM that you deserve).... Anton came out in a positive mood, talked about Oxfam charity work he is sponsoring and he told some cool quirky stories about his songwriting prowess and tales from the road, although he did get critical later with the inevitable band fopas only he can hear, but everyone knew the "conductor" truly cares and he drove the band to very high performance. Joel was front and center with the tambourines and Frankie played some downright religious guitar during the jams. Weird Owl played a spirited opening set, perfect for the job, but for some reason the sound mixing was poor compared to how they sound on their recordings.

I love BJM and have seen them many times at smaller venues like The Independent and The Fillmore. I was glad to see they "qualified" to play the Fox Theatre, but it was only about 2/3 full. Part of what I always enjoy about BJM is Anton Newcome ranting angrily; about America, politics, the lighting guy, the sound guy and audience members yelling requests. There was NONE of that for this show. He seemed somewhat detached from the whole show. My biggest complaint? They played for one hour and 20 minutes then left...no encore! They usually play for 2 hours, do an encore, none of that this night. The vocals were muted and the guitars were front and center so the sound mix left something to be desired. The music overall was great; he has a great catalogue of tunes so it's tough to go wrong...I just wanted more!!!

Really amazing concert (even though they refused to play an encore). They mainly played Tepid Peppermint Wonderland with a couple songs from Aufheben. And they didn't get into any fights throughout (see "Dig!"). Really incredible and very underrated band. Regardless, it's sad to see them so old and play such great songs, while knowing they do not have the recognition they deserve.

In general, the concert as a whole was pretty good. The opening act Magic Castles lasted 45 minutes and were decent and excelled when they went into their contained psychedelic jam sessions and were way too loud. The BJM sounded pretty good (Anton's Mic seemed a little low in the first hour) while Matt Hollywood really took center stage and invigorated the audience with more Rock and Roll oriented songs. The band's focus on new music and some psychedelic folk tended to create some valleys in the first hour of the performance. The band played for 2 hours and three minutes with no intermission (which is super long in this day in age) and the classics really brought the audience into a frenzy. Some fans seemed discontent that they didn't do an encore. I think they must have missed Matt saying goodbye before the last song and then Anton coming back to the stage. Well, I'm sorry to anyone who missed the show please try and make it next time you will thank yourself for it . The worse part were two idiots dancing and carrying on to the left and right of me. Also, if you go to a concert please take a shower beforehand.
