Penn & Teller On Broadway
PENN & TELLER seem to be everywhere: Celebrity Apprentice, Dancing with the Stars, world tours, Las Vegas! Now, the evil geniuses are tied up and being held hostage at the place that helped launch their careers: Broadway! For the first time in almost 25 years, the duo comes home, where they will bring astonishing tricks from their record-breaking Vegas act, along with their most outrageous classics, to the Marquis Theatre. Throughout their eclectic and indefinable careers, the duo has stabbed and shot at each other, been run over by tractor trailers, and caught bullets in their mouths. Now, for 6 weeks only, PENN & TELLER promise to shock and amaze Broadway like never before. Plus, their demented minds keep it all family friendly.

My sister and I took three of our children to see this performance of Cats. It was my third time to see the musical, and their first. We all enjoyed it. My six year old daughter was eagerly anticipating the Macavity set and was always asking when it was going to come up. It seems that I told her after every song that she would need to wait until near the end! Of course, they pump fake Macavity a couple of times, and her patience was tested, but it was worth the wait! We loved the actors' performances in mimicking cats, singing, and dancing. Our seats were in a box behind the orchestra seating, and some of the actors came into the box or sat right on the rail. I've always loved that aspect of this musical, getting to be up close with the actors and personally engaging with them. The kids loved it. Casa Manana was a great place to see this musical because of the intimate feel of the venue. I highly recommend it and will look into other performances at this venue.

The Taj Mahal Trio reaffirmed my belief that good musicians get still better over time. The Taj Mahal Trio paid tribute to American folk music and went far beyond the show Taj gave back in the late 1960s, when I first saw him in Los Angeles. Back then, Taj came to the stag with Jessie Davis and mesmerized the audience with a fireworks show of electric blues. Today, Taj, with Kester Smith on the drums and Bill Rich on the bass, play selections that cover the whole spectrum of African American folk music. Taj pickout country blues on a metal dobo, softened the mood by switching to a nylon strung acoustic, pumped up the show with Chicago styled blues played on an arch topped electric and wove in bluegrass feelings while playing his bango. What a show.

Before I move on to Katatonia, I want to talk about the opening acts a little bit... Stolen Babies put on a pretty good show to start things up, i'm not really into their sort of avant-garde, "oingo boingo" metal/punk style, but it was unique and worth experiencing once at least. Paradise Lost then came on and really cranked things up. Even though there was a problem hearing Nick Holmes the whole time because of his flu (and maybe his microphone might not have worked properly at the time), they put on a great performance, I was banging my head the whole time, even for the songs I don't know as well. Then we get to Katatonia... Katatonia put on a spectacular show on Saturday! They played many of my favorite songs in their discography, along with some of the big highlights from their most recent album they were touring in support of (Dead End Kings). The introduction they played to Dead Letters, which ends when Jonas calls for the "City of Angels" sent shivers down my spine, and got me even more excited to hear their performance. I was banging my head hard (my neck is a little sore now, but so worth it) and singing along word for word to almost every song they played. I was in awe of just how stunning this performance was as I was banging my head, many of the songs sound even better live than in the studio. Certainly one of the best nights of my life. And I have nothing to say about the Devin Townsend performance because I left after Katatonia was done with their show. I personally never cared for his work (I'm sure he's great at what he does, his style is just not for me) and I wanted to get back home before I got too exhausted to drive back for an hour or so. So yeah, that's all I have to say.

With seeing Jason in Las Vegas I had to see him again while he was in Atlantic City. I enjoyed show very much as I find Jason funny. From his singing, the jokes and just everything he talks about during the show makes him a great performer. I watched Jason when he played "George" in Seinfeld and still to this day a great performer. I would see him again.
