Indigo Girls

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:Contemporary folk icons Indigo Girls have had a long tenure as torchbearers of a modern approach to folk music that incorporates elements of alternative rock, punk, and country into the genre's traditional foundation. Each taking the stage with a guitar and a distinct voice, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray find the right balance of tension and harmony at their live shows, thrilling fans with marathon sets of mainstream hits and cult classics from their extensive catalog. In anticipation of a return to the studio in late 2014 for their 14th album, the Girls are pulling out all the stops on tour, performing alongside some of the country's best symphony orchestras at select dates around the country. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Childhood schoolmates Amy Ray and Emily Saliers began performing together while attending high school in Atlanta, eventually assuming the name Indigo Girls during their time together at Emory College.

I ve followed the Indigo Girls for decades and been to many of their concerts. I was disappointed with the playlist but my biggest disappointment was Emily. Her voice unfortunately has really declined. I still love them though.

Every year Emily and Amy fill Humphrey's with music and good energy, and draw a great crowd, and this year was no exception.

I found the evening to be high energy and the IG's harmonies glorious. I actually shed a tear from sheer happiness during their opening number. Julie Wolf was amazing as their "band" and overall I enjoyed the mix of new with the old. I do admit I hated having to stand for over 4 hours at the venue.....I love me a good chair.

I was very excited to see the Indigo Girls. It had been many years since I have seen them live. I live in Berkeley so Zellerbach is an easy beautiful venue, but . . . not a great choice to see the Indigo Girls. It is not a place to dance. Difficult to sit and watch this concert, unable to get up and dance! The warm up musicians were fantastic, a real treat!

Indigo Girls did a great show, as always - the house of blues is just about the right size venue to see them in, if one has a choice - small enough to feel intimate, large enough to have a good vibe. Matt Morris did a great opening set, as well. Props to the HOB for great sound and lighting - though they really should improve the video display screens or remove them. ;-)

First off, Longwood Gardens is beautiful. The open courtyard which seats roughly 1,200 was an excellent venue to feature the Girls. The show was sold-out. It rained for a little while, but none of us cared. We were lucky enough to be seated under a tree so we hardly got wet. The setlist was strong, including a couple of songs from almost every cd. Amy and Emily also threw in a couple new ones from their upcoming cd to be released in September. Encores included "Joking" which I've rarely heard them play live. Overall, a great show.

I have to give you a bit of info to place this review in context. I have never really listened to the Indigo Girls. I didn't know about them before my girlfriend mentioned them to me. I am a musician myself and enjoy few things as much as a good live musical performance. Seeing that they were playing close to home, my girlfriend asked for tickets to the show as her birthday gift, so we happily went (she was very excited, and I was very excited for her). The only other previous contact with the Indigo Girls I had (besides my girlfriend playing me their albums and telling me all about what they have meant to her in her life) was that on a road trip we did last year we stopped in at the Watershed in Atlanta to eat, because we both love great food and this restaurant certainly has that, but also is curiously part owned by Emily from the Indigo Girls. Unfortunately the concert experience started out in a really bad way. Florida is known for it's great weather, so living here one generally walks out the door dressed for sunshine. That day had been a bit chilly, so we should have been warned, but left in sneakers, jeans and a long sleeve shirt. We got to the place about an hour and a half before the printed time on the ticket, hoping to get a good spot as the seating was general admission. We were in good time, both to find one of the last easy parking spots and to be within the first 20 people in line. But it was so cold, that we stood there shivering and cuddling for an hour and a half. Towards the end of it, I was honestly a bit cranky, ready to go home if it was purely up to me. But alas we were allowed in and got a good spot right between the two main mikes second in row to the stage. A friend of mine later said, "Close enough, but not so they could spit on you." To which we replied, "No, they could have spit on us if they wanted to." We then had to wait from about 8 pm until 9 before the music began. As I think about it, I know this is common in the live music scene, and I must say I don't really enjoy it. It is not that I don't like waiting, quite the contrary I am a very patient person. What I don't like is not being given information, so that I can make my own best choices. I want my audience to come to my concert and have the greatest experience ever, in every way. I want them to feel they are treated with love, care and respect. I would have appreciated being given information, something as simple as, The doors to The Culture Room open at 8, but you are free to line up outside the door along the East Wall of the Building before then. Once inside the building you are free to get drinks and find the spot where you would like to see the show. The show will begin around 10 pm give or take 15 minutes. That helps me feel cared for and in some false sense in control, because I am still just being herded around with the crowd, but at least I feel I have enough information to make wise choice decisions about how my herding experience will be. I had never been to the Culture Room, so I guess next time I will know. I just wish I didn't have to go through a bad first experience to find out. It could have put me in a bad mood and ruined the whole concert experience. Fortunately it didn't. The opening band A Fragile Tomorrow came on with the charm and innocence only youth possesses but accompanied with the outstanding musicality of a natural born musician in the process of maturing and fine tuning their craft. These musicians seemed very young, especially the lead guitarist Brendan (a guitarist with such a natural sense of melody and an ease for improvising that it makes it soloing look like second nature), who we were later during the show told was 17. The lead singer Sean and the drummer Dominic immediately looked like brothers and later during the show we found out that they; Dominic, Sean and Brendan, are all siblings. The bassist Shaun, impressed me as the best musician on stage. It just seemed that his fineness and mastery in playing the bass has come the furthest. Which is no way a defrocking of the praises I gave all of the band. Doing my Google-ing I found out Shaun is a bit older, so that explains possibly why. His sense of groove and precision in his use of rhythm and attack/silence in his playing was like caramel to the ears. Very nice. We also realized eventually that the lead singer has a weak right leg, so he tends to lean mostly on his left. Doing some YouTube research led me to the info that both him and Dominic have cerebral palsy and are actually twins. That just makes my admiration of what they are doing that much greater. I think music is so healing for the body and soul in every respect that there is nothing more wonderful they could be doing then to be engaging their lives in music. Especially since it is a condition that can affect motor skills and communication. But A Fragile Tomorrow is so tight, so creative, so natural, one would never have been able to imagine any of this. But I still haven't mentioned what impressed me most. It is clearly the harmonies between Sean and Dominic. Which is also why I feel they are a perfect opening act for the Indigo Girls. At one point Amy came out and sang with them for a song and it was cute to see the awe and admiration that the young boys feel for such an accomplished artist. How would I describe their music? It is a mixture of rock, folk and country. A beautiful expression of the joy of music, of the beauty of brotherhood and of the fragility of life. If you ever have the chance to go see A Fragile Tomorrow, do it, you are in for a treat. As the stage was being prepared for The Indigo Girls my girlfriend kept asking where is the drum set. She had seen them many times live and they have always played with a full band. But on this occasion we got to see them in a very intimate, acoustic setting. Which after the concert I realized I had enjoyed very much. As I had listened to their CD, what had struck me was their beautiful harmonies and incredibly creative weaving of two voices in one purpose. I was also struck by the so clear complementary difference in the writing styles of Amy and Emily. Amy is the rocker, the rebel, the John Lennon, where as Emily is the romantic, the queen of melody, the Paul. A winning combination tried many times before and equally successful yet again. So I think getting to see them in this musically naked format, just them and their guitars really allowed me to see right through to the essence of what makes them so great and also to so clearly see that they are such great musicians. There was nothing to hide behind. During the whole concert they traded off playing an Amy song and then an Emily song and so on... They didn't talk so much with the audience, which was fine, it was great to just hear them plow though so much great music. But when Emily did share with the audience that her friend Joni who traveled to South Africa was in the audience or when Amy told us that the song she had just finished was her dad's favorite it made you wish they had shared more with us. Amy seemed a bit nervous most of the night. She was constantly giving signals to have them adjust the levels of her ear monitors. She forgot the words to a song at a certain point and after that it seemed she was able to relax a little. It's good to be human, perfection is too overrated. It is interesting to note the relationship between musicians. The Indigo Girls had a keyboardist who from time to time added some bass lines, keyboard sounds, melodies and even vocals. You could so easily tell that she and Emily have a great relationship and enjoy playing together a lot. The same as you could tell that it was really Amy that loves the guys from A Fragile Tomorrow and enjoys working with them. It is also fun to see the relationship with the crowd. It was funny to feel like the audience was mostly lesbian couples in their mid 40's, a wonderfully charming crowd. Although there were some men in the audience here and there. Like the gay guy right at the edge of the stage who sang every word to every song as if they were "... strumming (his) pain with (their) fingers, singing (his) life with (their) words." You can tell that The Indigo Girls have touched many lives and shared through their music many wonderful moments in the lives of many people. The older crowd knew all the classics, while the younger crowd sometimes missed singing songs one would call Indigo Anthems, but could sing along to all the latest material. I have previously had no knowledge and no relationship with these great artists and just after one night I feel like I know them well. That feels special. I now have created special memories associated to their music. It's a good sign when a couple days later one of their songs (which I've probably only hear 4 or 5 times) pops into my head and I find myself singing the chorus. I very much enjoyed the concert and it was a joy to see my girlfriends eyes sparkling as she sang along to those songs which hold dear memories for her. In a way it is getting to know her better. I would definitely go see them again!

The show was simply wonderful. The opening act, Larkin Poe, was pretty good, although the audience seemed a bit restless until Brandi Carlile took the stage. She gave an impressive concert in her own right, and was a delightful surprise, as I'd never seen her live, before. The Indigo Girls did a great job of blending new and old songs in the play set. They also incorporated their musical guests, like Brandi, into their concert seamlessly. The group numbers were truly amazing and a treat for the ears and the soul. This was my 13th Indigo Girls concert, and it certainly won't be my last one.

There is no better band! First concert I saw was in 1988 under a tent with Joan Baez as a guest performer. When IG comes to town, I am there! The plain truth is this...Central Park, gorgeous night, beautiful lyrics and harmonies, a rocking new album Posiedon and the Bitter Bug, and the bonus of Matt Nathanson opening...could one ask for more!?

Incredible show (as usual). They pulled some old songs out of their souls ... Prince of Darkness, Fugitive, This Train ... and ROMEO & JULIET .... Central Park was the very first place I saw the girls back in Sept '92 ... and they still pack the Summerstage area and have everyone standing/singing along the whole night.

I've been going to see the Indigo Girls in concert since 1997 and they just keep getting BETTER AND BETTER. This show was an awesome mix of new and old songs. This show was amazing! The Indigo Girls are ALWAYS outstanding in concert, but this venue helped to exceed my expectations by FAR! The El Rey is a small intimate theater, and it's always a treat to see anyone play there. The Indigo Girls played a lot of their classics, along with a good number of tunes from their new album. Still, after all these years, the girls harmony brings chills down my spine!!! If you've never seen them live, I strongly urge you to pick yourself up some tickets!!!

My first time ever seeing these ladies. I d not even heard of them or listened to their music. I quickly discovered how good they are playing various kinds of guitars and mandolins, not to mention their wonderful harmonizing. They write their songs, and have been on the road since 1987. My wife introduced me to these gals, now I m hooked. A tip of the hat to their opener group, The War & Treaty . These guys really got us wired up for the Indigo Girls.

We drove from central Texas to Knoxville TN for the Indigo Girls sold-out show at the Bijou, and it was everything you want a concert experience to be. The Girls were in great voice, and played a 21 song set spanning their 30 year career. Just Amy and Emily on instruments and that was all that was needed. Their talent as musicians and songwriters were At the front and it was spectacular. Have to say, the Bijou audience was off the chain and gave The Girls so much love and ENERGY! It was truly a mutual love fest and so uplifting to be sitting smack in the middle of it. I ve seen a lot of shows in my years, but none affect me like the Indigo Girls shows do. I walk out of the venue with a renewed spirit and happy heart. If you like well played Folk rock music and smart relevant song lyrics then Indigo Girls are a must-see! They re an incredible duo!!!

The show was amazing and just as good as I remember it from 15 years ago! Amy and Emily sounded great (even though they claimed they were getting over sickness) and the banter between songs was hysterical. Not too much, not too little. Great play list with a really nice mix of old and new music. Loved every second of the night, especially when they allowed a couple in the audience a few minutes in the spotlight to get engaged! The venue was also fantastic - small and intimate, comfortable seating and $4 wine & beer benefitting the local arts foundation. How can it be any better?!?

Saw the Indigo Girls for the first time last Tuesday evening at the Madison Theater in Covington, KY. A smaller venue, they were accompanied only by a violinist. I believe they said they are also traveling with a band on some of the stops of this tour (?), I was pleased to see them essentially "duo/acoustic". The Madison was packed and they admitted to feeding off of the energy of the crowd. They put on a great show. A nice setlist which featured much of their new album along with many of their older favorites. Their guitar play was excellent and their harmonies are simply fantastic. A must see.

This has been our Fourth time seeing the Indigo Girls at Scottish Rite Auditorium. We have seen them at other venues as well. As always an excellent performance. I am a long time fan, and this concert reminded me of the Indigo Girls during the Swamp Ophelia tour, which I think was the height of their power. The Shadowboxers, who opened for Amy and Emily, are also AMAZING - five very talented guys in a 5 piece band (keys, rythm guitar, lead guitar, drums and bass) and awesome three part harmony. But when it gets really good is when the three main shadowboxers come on with Amy and Emily's drummer (the best since Jerry Marotta, and when I told him that he grinned and said "Jerry is a legend, thank you" which just made me like him more) and the IG bass player who was very cute and did a GREAT job The shadowboxers sang back up on almost everything and they were incredible. They clearly know and love A&E's music All in all - go see the Indigo Girls - they are well on form

I've seen the Indigo Girls more than a dozen times and have found that they play better to a smaller venue. This was definitely the case with their performance at the Culture Room. Although, they didn't engage with the audience as I have seen them do in past shows. They played a great mix from all of their albums and of course covered their trademark songs, "Closer to Fine" and "Galileo." However, I was surprised that there were no new songs. It was great to hear classic IG with just Amy and Emily playing acoustic, yet their collaboration with The Shadowboxers as their backup band was brilliant, particularly with the ways they used their talents to replace instruments (i.e. vocals in lieu of the penny whistle on Closer to Fine). Amy and Emily are exceptional musicians and lyricists--if you haven't seen them, you're missing out.

Most of the crowd were fans, from what I could tell the y were very happy with how the show went. I liked being out of my norm at a concert it gave me a whole new perspective. I'm going to seek out some new live music more often.

Unbelievable experience! Having the Symphony backing up IG added beautiful richness to already wonderful music. The arrangements were perfect. One of my favorite IG shows out of years of them!

I've been listening to the Indigo Girls since the 90's and every time I've seen them live I have NOT been disappointed! They sound even better live and in person than they do on your MP3 player! Harmony harmony and more harmony!! They know how to engage their fans and always have something important to say! This show was in a great venue and the Indigo Girls made sure the acoustics didn't go to waste! Whether or not you are a fan, you should see them live just once, I guarentee you'll see them again and again! I took my 17 year old daughter to this show... her first live concert and she loved it!

I could never be able to express my feelings for these ladies, their accomplishments, and their music that makes life that much more worth it. My lady love and I shall add another ticket to my invaluable collection on December 7. Thank you both for many years of your blood, sweat, tears and lines upon our beautiful faces.

While the Indigo Girls have gotten older, so has the audience, and though they don't have the same raw edge, the vocals and harmonies are now seemless and effortless and second nature. The musicianship just grows exponentially with each show. The one thing that never changes about the Indigo Girls is their forthright spiritual humanism. Every time I see them it is a spiritual renewal. An old fashioned revival. And the audience Always walks out elated and recharged.

If the Indigo Girls in their prime at probably the finest outdoor setting in the Bay Area on a cool Summer evening wasn't enough, the opening band, Mount Moriah, was a very pleasant surprise. Their studio stuff on iTunes had not impressed me as I considered it overproduced, but they were clean, uncluttered and a pure joy Sunday night. Vocalist Heather McIntyre (sic) was as good to look at as she was to listen to, and the band around her was tight. After an enjoyable hour-plus, Amy and Emily just did their thing as well as anybody can do it, with superb instrumental accompanyment. Emily's banjo is one nice piece of work! The show was one of six I'll be seeing at this venue this Summer and it has continued the soul-lifting expeience I had with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt just a few weeks ago. BRAVO Amy and Emily, the band, and Mount Moriah... Thanks y'all !!!

The music of course was outstanding, There was sound issues. I'm pretty sure if standing facing the stage, Non of the speakers to the left was working properly. Made hearing clarity very hard. With today's technology and the Oregon Zoo summer concerts that get the crowds they do and the sponsors, I am shocked that they do not have speakers and tweeters through out the whole concert surroundings. They could have wireless water proof speakers in the trees on the outskirts, that would make a massive difference for everyone to enjoy the concert 100%. The Zoo should also hook up wide screen monitors on the out shirts as well. For instance: Elephant habit -- Tripod, wireless TV screen AND more people can get better look at the performers and actually feel as though they are part of the concert, WE started walking towards car 2 songs before the end, and as we got higher and further away the sound was better and clearer. SURROUND SOUND IS THE KEY!!

This was my 5th time seeing The Indigo Girls over the last 20 years. They are totally my favorite duo. The way their voices blend is like nothing else I have ever heard. The harmonies are tight and the song writing is always like they know each and every fan and are writing about each of our lives in some way. I loved the intimacy of the small venue at The Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater. It was like being in a small quiet bar, just the Girls and their guitars. I loved it!!!!!!!!!!

The Indigo Girls played to a sold out Longwood Gardens and blew away old fans and new listeners alike. The show was started by a band they've booked with for most of the summer, TSB. Although never having heard any of their songs, they played with passion and I'm interested in checking out their EP. Despite a steady rain falling midway through the Indigo Girls set, most people stayed and swayed with their new songs and some of their greatest hits alike.

The show was fine but their voices are worn. The crowd talked, phoned, and made noise throughout so we will not be going to Indigo Girls shows in the future unless there is adult supervision. The crowd made it difficult to see and hear the show.

the indigo girls are back with a vengeance! it was so great to see them WITHOUT a band again, when they walked on stage armed with just their acoustic guitars,a smile radiated from my face! ive seen them dozens of times, and the shows where its just them and their acoustics and of course their amazing harmonies are always the best and most intimate of their performances...the beautiful version of "wood song"with its gospel tinged lryics was inspiring, especially with every one singing along! and "shame on you" that amy dedicated to the "dreamers" was just right on.but the song of the night wasn't "gallileo" or even the consistant encore for decades now "closer to fine" the showstopper this night...,the audience requested "watershed" was just beautiful showcasing their AMAZING harmonies bouncing off each other like a whisper of echoes...and NO they had no special guests or non-talented friends or pet dogs join them on stage which was wonderful for once, just a couple of girls with guitars and angelic voices piecing the san diego sky....

Very disappointing show. The audience was very rude to the opening act. The talking and general noise level was so loud that it was difficult to hear the performance. Once the indigo girls took the stage, most of the crowd quieted down. Most of the crowd listened to the performance. Some of the crowd continued to try to make the night about themselves. As for the performance, I was very disappointed! The vocals were less than stellar. The harmonies were off as were the individual vocals. Most of the crowd seemed happy with the show. As for me, this was the first show that I can remember leaving before the end. I have attended hundreds of concerts and this wasn't one that I felt was worth the price of admission. The only positive was the talented opening act.

I have been a huge fan since the mid 80's and have seen the Indigo Girls play in many different venues, but this was one of the best. The music was awesome as always, but the connection to the fans at the Civic made this show unforgettable. Emily and Amy have always put themselves out there for what they believe in and their ability to draw people together creates a warm, welcoming and accepting environment. I hope to see them performing for many years to come.

This was one of the top concerts of all time! After all this time I was blown away at the energy they gave. You'd think after 20+ years, Galileo would get tired for them, but it was my favorite song. It gave me the same feeling as the first time I heard it. Took me right back to my time in Alaska. I love them for all the gave. And the violinist was crazy good!!!!! Somehow she made them even better! And for the Brandy Clark to be the opening act!!! How awesome was that??? The Civic Theatre is gorgeous.

I've been a moderate fan since the late 80's and had never seen the Indigo Girls. Now that has changed and thank goodness it has...they were AMAZING! I've loved the music but mostly only had their debut album and one other, so many of the songs they played I did not know. Well when you don't know many of the songs yet you get 100% enjoyment you know how truly amazing the performers are! First time maybe, last time no way!

I have been listening to the Indigo Girls for over 25 years, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to see them live. What an absolutely unexpected pleasure to find they sound as great live over 25 years later than the first time I listened to one of their CD's!! Having seen many bands a decade or two between viewings/listening and been usually at least a little disappointed (sometimes more than a little!!) in their performances, I was so pleased to hear just how good they sounded. I admit I was a little stunned when their entire stage setting consisted of just 3 microphones and some instrument stands. However, as soon as they started singing, it became very clear that when you have that kind of talent, you don't need an elaborate stage set. This performance will go down as one of the best I have ever seen....I only wish I had seen them before!

This was my first time seeing this duo perform live, despite being a longtime fan. The venue was great, and they helped me with special needs seating ahead of time. The concert itself was exactly what I'd want from the Indigo Girls, no flash, no sizzle, just them and their guitars and amazing vocals. They seemed genuinely thankful for the crowd and made this feel like an intimate event.

I can not count how many times I have seen the Indigo Girls in concert. They bring it every. single. time. The girls performed as just the duo with their various guitars, no backing band. There is not much more pure and simply beautiful than the soulful sound of their harmonies soaring over their instruments. (The only thing better was seeing them backed by the entire St. Louis Symphony a couple years ago!) While I love hearing artists share stories of their work in between songs (like Storytellers), the Girls barely spoke, except for the obligatory "Thanks, y'all!." This left more time for the music. The went from Emily-written melodies to Amy-fronted rock seamlessly, back and forth. The sold-out crowd sang and danced and celebrated the songs that have formed our generation. I will never miss the opportunity to see the Indigo Girls when they visit my city.

Indigo Girls acoustic are always amazing (even though I love them with their band too). They played the typical favorites and oldies that everyone loves with their usual energy. They popped in "Ghost" which is a rarity the times I've seen them and one of my favorites. They had their opener Dom Kelly sing on "Kid Fears" which on the album features Michael Stipe and Dom killed it. The topper of the night is when Amy came out on the curtain call and blew us away with "Romeo & Juliet". One of the best of their shows I've seen!

A Fragile Tomorrow opened the show. It was a painful performance to sit through. The lead singer was off key through most of the set list. I attend around 20 concerts a year all around the country and never had an experience quite like this one. It s never a case whether I like or dislike the type of music; it s a matter of the quality of the performance. It was apparent that they were not prepared for the stage. In fact, we left the concert before the Indigo Girls even came on. I felt if they allowed this quality of opening act to share the same stage then the rest of the concert was going to be more of the same

I can watch the Indigo Girls over and over again. They are poetic, passionate and generous to the audience. I brought my 16 year-old daughter to the show and she was inspired. The venue was great! The only complaint I have has nothing to do with the Indigo Girls or the venue. There were small pockets of people who found it necessary to talk loudly during the show. The louder the music, the louder the talk. I'd like to see more respect on the part of the audience for the performers. This isn't the first band I saw this year where this was the case. This isn't a criticism of the venue or the band.

Great show!! Amy & Emily have such great energy and interactions with their audiences. A 10-year old had a sign saying 'this is my first concert'. Emily & Amy interacted with her and Emily passed one of her guitar picks through the crowd to the youngster. The musicians playing with her complimented them and totally rocked the show. Especially the rocking violinist!! My friend is in a wheelchair and we got to sit in the 6th row.
