Built To Spill

Built To Spill

BUILT TO SPILL IN CONCERT:Alternative legends Built to Spill have helped ticket buyers rock out for more than two decades. On stage singer/guitarist Doug Martsch leads the band through alt rock gems that move from densely layered six-string onslaughts to heartfelt ballads and back again. Brett Netson and Jim Roth add swirling layers of sound effects and melodic harmony lines to the guitar mayhem, while bassist Jason Albertini keeps tracks fluid with his grooving basslines. Drummer Steve Gere propels the band forward, ensuring that each song reaches its peak before he slowly dismantles the groove.

As a fan of Built to Spill, I was not disappointed. They sounded great and embraced their minimalist stage clutter. I wish they would ve played a few more songs but nevertheless a great show.

This was my first time seeing Built to Spill as a 3 piece. Doug Martsch delivered. His guitar skills and multi-tasking skills are unreal... In the past two years, Built to Spill has gone from a band that I've casually listened to over the past 15 years to my hands down favorite group of musicians. Go see them. I was disappointed to only see the 3 on stage at first (I'm a huge Brett Netson fan, and he was not with them), but Doug, Steve, and Jason MADE IT HAPPEN.

First, I should admit that I didn't exactly have the highest of expectations for Built to Spill. I love their albums, but I saw them several years back at the same venue and the experience was mediocre at best. That said, this last show at the El Rey Theater was absolutely phenomenal! The sound was perfect, and Built to Spill played an amazing show.

Lots of shows come and go, but when 'Built to Spill' plays Lee's Palace 2 nights in a row, that's a big deal. These guys probably have fans that never get to see them play live and we get them twice in two days at a great Toronto venue. I bet they play Big Dipper and Good Tune tonight. It's a shame I won't be there to enjoy it. MT.

It was clear they were perfectionists of jam band rock. They played a wide variety of songs over the span of their albums. Last song was a bit self indulgent...they spent a bit too much time exploring the set of chords... Overall great though!

Band played solid, errors were few and far between. The problem was that it all seemed too routine. The energy level just seemed to drag here and there. At times I really got into the music, its just that those times were too spread out. Little stage presence, if any. A quick hello during the long downtime between songs--other than that I'm not sure if the band wanted to be there at all. The venue was very smoky.

As a fan of their music (and being my first BTS show), I was a bit disappointed by the setlist and the overall lack of energy. Maybe it was the poor sound quality, but I felt no connection to the performance -- even when things picked up a bit at the end with Car and Carry the Zero -- like everyone, two longtime favorites. By then, though, it was too little too late. I thought the musicians may have felt the same as they went into a 10-minute exploratory odyssey to attempt to reclaim the evening. But even that fell fairly flat before the merciful end. I would like to see them again sometime when things are more inspired.

If memory serves, Built to Spill's studio albums were recorded as trios or quartets. Performing these songs live with 3 guitarists made them so much better-more complexity, more energy, without losing any of the character that made me love them in the first place. Nearly moved to tears several times. My only regret-no "The Plan" or "Time Trap". Which isn't to say that the band didn't stretch some of their other songs out.

Play the damn songs! With the amazing sounds and lyrics that this band puts out its hard for me to understand 30 minutes of an already short set devoted to what they put up at the end of that show.

My cousin brought one of the albums over roughly 10 years ago and I never looked back...all of their albums are amazing, and they are wicked in concert. This show was fantastic, I heard 2 songs that I can only assume are off the upcoming release (both were excellent) and they also rocked a lot of good stuff from several older albums. This band is amazing live! go see them!! Built to Spill: MPLS LOVES YOU!! Keep coming back boys!

Well, they look like they have been enjoying a little to much beer lately, but the show was good, music as good, venue was good. last song was a 25 minute jam. If you like modest mouse, death cab for cutie, Built to spill influenzed them all.

Built To Spill's show amazed me and the rest of the energetic Thursday night crowd at First Ave. Doug Martsch opened the set with "Liar," a crowd favorite, to get the fans going and didn't stop until the end of the three song encore. Several songs from the new album "There is no Enemy" were played giving fresh perspective from the long-time indie standby. They played all the songs I wanted and then some. The band rocked the venue to its full potential.

Doug and crew did not disappoint...well, maybe not playing anything from their magnum opus, "Perfect From Now On" was a let down, but they more than made up for it with magnificent sound and beautiful guitar sonics interplay. Doug is a lyrical, melodical soloist to whom I could listen for hours. Scott's drumming is solid and unobtrusive, right on the money. The encore (three songs, last one clocking in at over 35 mins!) was RIGHT ON and swept me away on an ocean of sound. They played just over 2 hours and were their usual unassuming selves--it's all about the music.

These guys are a tight outfit - I challenge anyone to find one mistake or technical error at a Built to Spill show. Amazing as the music may be, however, the members looked bored at moments. The drummer, in particular, seemed like he was just playing from memorization rather that from a source of fun or passion. Again, he was a technically brilliant musician. Also, the end of the show ended a bit self-indulgently. I love to see the guys go off on tangents more than the next guy (that is apart of who Built to Spill is), but I could have done without the 25 minute noise jam at the end of the show. I would have rather seen them play "kicked it in the sun" or "big dipper" to be honest (sing-along-tunes). Still, the music was incredible and I highly recommend seeing these guys, especially if you're a big fan.

This being my 3rd time seeing Built To Spill live I walked away feeling a bit disappointed. Their setlist featured many of the older gems which was great. There was not much feeling put forth in their songs and you could see it and hear it. The band did a 15 minute rock out that was all over the place and it wasn't very enjoyable the audience, many people began to leave and I could hear and see why. I would rather sit at home and watch the live tape with them playing with Modest Mouse at the GA playhouse theater from 2001.

With the Galaxy s web site indicating a show start time of 7:30, I arrived at 8:30 expecting to arrive just in time for second-billed Woods. Somewhat surprising was that the first opener, Kurt Vile, was still on stage. Also surprising was the generous early turnout present. Kurt Vile is a Philadelphia, PA, indie-folk-acoustic performer who this night performed as a solo act. He played to 8:50 allowing me to catch his last four songs - two would have sufficed. Up at 9:05 was Woods, a self-described pop-psychedelic-jam band. Per info found, the 4-piece (vox/guitar, bass, drums, and misc. effects/electronics) is apparently based in Los Angeles. The 45-minute set provided readily demonstrated the psychedelic and jam aspects but too often were at ear-splitting volume levels. Somewhat uncanny was the band s tendency to at times duplicate the style of Built to Spill with the vocalist often sounding near identical to Doug Martsch. The foursome received but a polite response from what had become a full house although not actually sold-out. Boise, Idaho's Built to Spill: Doug Martsch, Scott Plouf, Jim Roth, Brett Nelson, and Brett Netson, then began at 10:10. Formed in Boise, ID, in 1993, shortly after Martsch had departed the Boise-rooted, Seattle-based Treepeople, this was my fifth live exposure to the band. Prior live performances for this classic indie band were: 4/09/99 at the Roxy, 5/26/03 and 8/13/04 at the HoB-A, and lastly on 7/05/06 at the Troubadour. The 90-minute main set this night seemed like the best from the band s seven full-lengths with no obvious emphasis on 2009 s There Is No Enemy. The band was very well received by those present and deservingly so. I then split at the end of the main set electing to skip the presumed encore and a follow-on DJ set from Doug Martsch.

I live in the valley so it took about 1 hour and a half to get there. The club is in a business park setting. Not much to eat or drink around there so plan ahead if you are going to see a show at the Galaxy. As far as Built to Spill goes, they were AMAZING! I have seen them about 10 times and they have always kept getting better live. The extra guitarist looked like Brett Netson and played like Brett Netson. I love when the two of them get together. Scott Plouf is a bad ass on drums. Actually, the Woods were a really good opening act. It's funny that I have a Woods album that doesn't do them justice so I really wasn't looking forward to hearing them. Cool Built to Spill shirts!!

Built to Spill are pros. Their albums come to life when you see three amazing guitarists sacrificing individual glory for the greater good. Seriously, they're fun to watch. You can see why these guys are, in a way, Modest Mouse's idols. Felt bad that the show was far from sold out cuz it should've been... better view for those who do go though!

Built to spill was phenomenal! Being the youngest group in the entire show, my friends and I seemed slightly out of place (ranging from 15 to 17) But that didnt matter because the band was awesome. I didn't realize how old these guys were, and I find it amazing that they have been active and continuously awesome since before I was born. My only regret was that they didn't play Conventional Wisdom, my favorite song of theirs.

I've been a big fan of BTS for years but this is the first time I've had a chance to see them live. They were exceptional! They have crafted a large number of songs lead with 3 guitars building a well crafted wall of sound - anchored by a solid drum and bass. While they may come off to some as a guitar jam band that is not the case as all - their songs are very solid crafted arrangements with each guitar responsible for building their wall of sound. Their live playing is equal to if not better than their recordings since it delivers that visceral effect that is almost impossible to capture in a recording. The only thing that doesn't compare is the clarity of vocals - Doug Martsch has a distinct style similar in some ways to Neil Young and the high energy choice of songs played did not allow the vocals to shine as much though the crowd certainly knew the songs and you could see many singing along. To sum up - one of the best shows of the year for me!

First time at this venue and was super impressed. The town was so quiet, parking was heaven, the staff at the Uptown were very helpful, courteous and friendly. The Uptown itself was immaculately clean and very comfortable inside, easy on the eyes too. This was also my first time seeing Built to Spill and they sounded awesome. It was one of those rare shows where I just felt lucky to be there in my seat experiencing the music that was being made. It was a special time, not just another night out.. .My girlfriend and I are so glad we drove from San Jose to see them after the San Francisco show at the Fillmore sold out before we got tickets. The opening act, "Sister Crayon" had a singer that was very impressive as well. Keep an eye out for her, folks.

These guys put on an amazing show. No frills. They come out during setup, tune their own guitars then quietly slip into some the the best ass kicking jams. Really amazing. Built To Spill is one of the most fantastic bands on the circuit. Doug Martsch alone is fantastic (he is in the band) and has produced some awesome work, but the band is moving with a sound like no other. Make sure you listen first, but if you like the sound, go and prepare to be moved. Fans all have a favorite. Me? I have SEVERAL favorites. My husband had several favorites before I met him. Together, we are both singing words throughout the whole show. It's truly a treat to go to a show. I'm glad they are not carrying a huge fan base for personal, selfish reasons...but I'm not sure why they are not.

Only time I've ever seen or heard of B2S was when I went with an "Indie Girl" to see their show. I've been to plenty of shows in my day- mainstream, underground and local acts. I must say, B2S sounded pretty good live. I didn't care much for their style of music, but they sounded good nonetheless and I wouldn't take that away from them just bc their not my cup o' tea. However, unless you're an indie kid/grown up, you won't really enjoy them much. There were comments on hear saying that B2S was "the best band of our generation" or something to that extent- pure hogwash! Get a grip on reality kiddos. A decent indie/underground/or what have you band, Sure! best anything? highly doubtful.

They seemed to just go through the motions. You got the feeling they didn't want to be there. Not much audience interaction, heck they barely interacted with each other! I was so excited to see this concert and it was a huge let down. They had issues with their sound, the lead singer had a heck of a time keeping his guitar tuned and was constantly trying to tune it. What a mess! People paid to see them and be entertained. That is their job for goodness sake, they are entertainers. They didn't seem at all happy to be there and gave off a negative vibe! What a waste of my time and money! Hands down the worst concert I have ever been to which is sad because these guys can play some awesome music! Having been a fan of theirs for half of my lifetime, I really wanted to be blown away by Built to Spill. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The band was probably right on point during every song on the setlist, but I wouldn't know because the sound and acoustics at the venue were close to unacceptable. Sometimes the lead guitar was too loud, and sometimes you couldn't hear it at all. Sometimes the bass was too loud, other times I thought the bass player had walked off the stage completely. Granted, this is largely out of the band's control. Also, I'm not sure if Doug Martsch was feeling a bit sick or not, but his vocals sounded strained and at times a bit forced. He tripped up on his own lyrics during "Kicked it in the Sun," a song he's presumably played hundreds of times over the last 13 years. Despite all of the negatives, though, the band's energy was definitely there, and you could tell they were trying their best to show the crowd a good time. Every now and then you could make out a smile on their faces which let you know, after all these years, these guys still enjoy rocking out on stage. I would still pay to see them again\u2014hopefully at a better venue and when Doug is more on top of his game.

Being an avid BTS fan for 20+ years may make this lady biased, but anyone could tell you their show in Knoxville rocked. Doug was playing the part of 3 guitarists and did as anyone would expect of him - brilliantly! I enjoyed the show as I have every other time I've seen Built to Spill and would go back again and again. I got to meet Doug after the show and his down to earth personality is one of the reasons they are still as great as they were 7 albums ago. It was a fantastic show. Although it was a 3 piece, the band sounded great. Songs from most of their albums were played. The only downside was that Doug Martsch was the only guitarist, so those little fills and backing guitar was missing. No slide guitar either. But who cares, it was Doug playing and we were on the second row in a small venue. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Will never forget it.

The venue was perfect to see them at. Only about 300 people. I may have been a little upset if I wasn't as close as I was. They left the stage for literally a minute or less and then came back out to play more songs, Didnt even make us chant for an encore. The vocals were tougher to hear then when listening to them recorded but I think thats how they intended the show to be. Definitely going to see them every chance possible

First time at Uptown Theater in Napa. Not well suited venue for lively show, since there is no open floor space -- seating only. There were some folks getting up and standing in the aisles, but then that sometimes created tension with the folks sitting and their view was blocked. Opener band Slam Dunk was great sonically, but so very awkward to watch on stage! I will be listening to them a lot, but not going to see them.... Opener band Warm Hair was entertaining, but again so very awkward on stage. The lead singer is awful awful vocally. In all, both opener bands were terribly awkward on stage, so awkward that it was like watching a train wreck -- we couldn't look away, with our jaws dropping in amazement. Built to Spill was great. Not the best performance (seen am a few times), but they sounded pretty tight and the set list was good. We do wish they would have played Strange (bit then again, everybody wants to hear that at every show -- maybe that should be a mandatory set song).

The Uptown Theater in Napa is an incredible venue. It's beautifully appointed and the perfect size. There isn't a bad seat in the house.

BtS are a great live act. I'm not so familiar with their last two albums, but I didn't have to be to enjoy their show. They're one of those bands that have a lot of fun up on stage, and it's really easy to tell. Even if you're not that familiar with them, I'd still recommend seeing them live - they're that good.

Although the band was tight musically, they didn't play Strange, Happiness, Car, The Plan, and many other crowd favorites. I was very disappointed with the set list.

Wow! Go see BTS if you have a fondness for searing, psychedelic guitars and thought-provoking lyrics. Over the course of 20 years, Doug Martsch and Co. have been consistently producing great records. These songs evolve and become even more fascinating in the live setting. 3-min studio-polished ditties get stretched into 10-min improvisational juggernauts. My obsession with this band began in my car, when traveling from Boston to Utica. Keep it Like a Secret, BTS's '99 release, played on repeat in my 6-disc changer. The CD blared in full at least 5 times. My interest was piqued more and more with every subsequent listen. Carry the Zero and Else resonated the most, so I was pumped hearing them played this tour. Let's hope BTS, and other Alt Rock stalwarts like Dino Jr and Yo La Tengo, continue making music for years to come. See y'all in Cleveland.

First time @ Culture Room and it was chill. First band Slam Dunk was pretty good for their genre of music. Built to Spill was awesome. Performance was so good I was speechless. Lead singer after 20 years still sounds like he did from first album. Cover songs were pretty good too.... Some pavement and velvet revolver. Finisher was awesome but they didn't play Big Dipper which I feel is probably one of their strongest songs. All in all it was a stellar performance and would def go 2 see them again.

Exceeded my expectations. The opening bands that were selected were good. I particularly liked Genders. Slam Dunk had a lot of charisma and character but their fast paced sound didn't really match the overall theme. Built To Spill was amazing. They played their classics and some songs I haven't heard before but still enjoyed. Doug Martsch was very polite by thanking the crowd after every applause in between sets. Brett Netson dedicated the show to Lou Reed which was nice. Doug's voice sounded so good and clear that for a second you had to wonder if he was lip syncing. The venue was packed with adoring fans and they gave a great performance the entire night, which lasted until around 11:30 P.M. The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because not even the opening acts were on stage at the "start" time. Thankfully I didn't show up early, but the show didn't begin until 8.

The Genders were terrific, especially their closer. Slam Dun was a lot of fun. But Built to Spill earned the best show of the night, the high point being the encore of some terrific covers. The whole performance blew me away.

A great show for the ages. The band was very lively and enthusiastic towards playing both their old and new songs. The acoustics there at Variety Playhouse were dialed in for optimal quality of sound.

Built to Spill was great. The thing about BTS is that they don't really have any bad songs (and most are very good) so the set was great. BTS amazes me with the guitar interplay and how well written all the guitar parts are, and it's really cool to see all three guitarists in concert. I enjoyed hearing the Dinosaur Jr. cover, and it was funny because I saw Dinosaur Jr. in the same venue about a year before. Sound quality wise it was pretty good, they were louder than I'd like, but all concerts I go to are. Dinosaur Jr. was much louder, so BTS was better in that respect. The opening bands weren't very good, but that seems to be the usual for the concerts I've been to.

Their three guitar interplay is always unbelievable. Jamming. They were tight and chose a nice assortment of songs from a broad time span. If they had a next night in the area I would have gone again. Don't miss these guys. You will enjoy.

At the show were 2 no-name opening bands that were pretty... alright I suppose. The first is an indie instrumental band, so if you care about singing you won't get any. They played roughly 5 or 6 songs before moving on for the next band. The 2nd band was called Fooseball? Football? Either way, they were OK, but the singer sounded like a chipmunk. The 2nd band's set lasted FOR-EVER. Longer than Built to Spill played. The 3rd band was of course, Built to Spill. Playing only their good new songs and some great old songs (oldies were more than half the set easily). It's funny because Doug is a pretty awkward guy, after every song he'll say, "Thanks" and that's it. Never talking to the crowd. This isn't a problem, but it is worth noting in case anybody likes when their favorite band frontman talks to the audience a bit during the set (Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins did). Built to Spill did play a 2-song encore.

For those of you that don't know Built to Spill - you are missing out! They are easily one of the most talented and underrated bands out there today. Not only have they been cranking out great music for over a decade, but they strike me as the type of musicians, who are humble and always striving to better their music. Bottom line - if you are a fan, go and see them live (if you haven't already) and be blown away. If you aren't familiar with them, there is no time like the present to start listening and start loving this band!

This is my 3rd time in as many years seeing BTS. This show would be ranked at the bottom due to length of performance and setlist selection. Doug makes playing the guitar look easy, but I thought the crowd was way into this show and the songs they played were for first time BTS concert goers. That show at the Cabooze 2 years ago was amazing. I had a great time at this show, Wherever You Go was such a great tune, but I did not see it coming as the last of the set. Come back soon, come back often, play for 2 hours!!!!!

this was a bit of a step outside my usual comfort zone musically. i've been aware of built to spill and quasi for years of course, but never was that into either one... mostly because i find it hard to find anything that stands out about, especially, built to spill's music on recordings... so the problem is where to start. turns out the place to start is with their live show which is quite good. they play really well together and the music has incredible density live as a result. I think it would still be hard to choose an album to buy, but I've definitely got some ideas regarding individual songs to start with. regarding the venue itself... the wonder ballroom is a super great venue. good solid sound and plenty of space. the venue is well run and there are several places to get a drink and not miss much or any of the action. i can't wait to see more shows there of bands that i'm more into.

I took my daughter (15), who loves Built to Spill, to see this show and I was pretty disappointed. I have seen Built to Spill several times and they are always great but not so much this time. Doug's voice sounded awfully strained. They played a very short set. They didn't seem to be into the performance at all. It seemed that quite a bit less importance or interest was put into this performance and I wondered if the over 21 show was better. It could have just been a bad date, he wasn't feeling well, or a matter of other things but the bottom line is when someone pays $70 for two tickets to help support their childs love of music they expect something a little better than what we saw that night. I still love Built to Spill...will I ever spend my Hard Earned Money on their tickets again...Probably Not!

This is my favorite band ever. they were amazing. I love the way the lead singer is in his own world. Half the time he is singing his eyes are closed & its almost as if hes having a seizure. I see them everytime they come to town and will continue to do so..Bought an amazing poster too. Keep it up guys...this band makes me laugh, cry, ect. and just keep bringing it with every new album release. I will forever love....and be...Built to Spill.

I love Built to Spill and thought the music sounded really good on the whole, but they seemed completely bored and like they didn't want to be there. They didn't interact with each other or the audience at all, and it just seemed a little bit sad. Maybe it was because it was at the very end of their tour and they were tired, but I was disappointed by that. If they're not excited by the music anymore maybe they should stop playing. Why just go through the motions?

I had the best time at the Wonder Ballroom on Saturday night. I got there early with my boyfriend and we had a couple of drinks in the Under the Wonder Cafe before the show. A few of the band members came down there too, including Doug Martsch. The opening acts were hand-picked by Doug Martsch, and they really got things going. Finn Riggins is from Idaho and they had the fastest drummer I've ever seen! Disco Doom from Switzerland came on next and they were electrifying. There aren't enough words to describe how great Built to Spill was. The crowd had a lot of energy and we were feeding off of each other and dancing to the music. It was a blast! They played a balanced mix of songs from their new album as well as some classics from previous albums. The intimate setting put me right up next to the stage. It was a packed house and by the end of the evening, I was drenched in sweat and half deaf, but blissfully happy!
