On the Town

Broadway's musical comedy classic is the talk of the town! The New York Times raves, “ON THE TOWN takes your breath away." The Hollywood Reporter calls it "an explosion of pure joy," and The Wall Street Journal urges you to "see it as soon as you possibly can! ON THE TOWN is everything a great show should be!" With the biggest orchestra on Broadway and a 30-member cast of NYC’s most talented singers and dancers, ON THE TOWN tells the story of three sailors on a whirlwind tour of the city that never sleeps. With just 24 hours of shore leave, they’re eager to experience all that New York City has to offer… including a chance to discover love with the girl of their dreams.Directed by Tony® winner JOHN RANDO (Urinetown, A Christmas Story) and choreographed by Emmy® winner JOSHUA BERGASSE ("Smash"), this big, brassy musical comedy features LEONARD BERNSTEIN’s “rapturous and red-blooded score” (Daily News), lyrics by COMDEN AND GREEN, and breathtaking dancing inspired by the original JEROME ROBBINS choreography.

The best part of the performance was the national anthem at the beginning! It went somewhat downhill from there. We went to this show primarily to see Misty Copeland and we weren't disappointed.

On the Town is a very good revival show and we generally enjoyed it a lot. However, we were rather disappointed that on a Thursday night, a good 5 roles were filled by the understudies. These were major roles- especially that 2 of the 3 primary sailors were fill-ins and I could tell on the crispness of their dance performance. If I had seen the road show in my home town with these same performers I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but to pay prime ticket price and travel to New York (airplane, hotel, etc) I felt somewhat cheated. I did notice in today's ( Aug 9) New York Times that the show will close in early September, so that means the principals are bailing out, but I would have liked to seen the Broadway show at Broadway quality. (The tech was fabulous though!)

I recommend the new production of "On the Town" without reservation. The production seemed to capture the flavor of 1944 New York. The cast reminded me of the original members way back when, especially Alyssa Umphress, who channeled Nancy Walker in her role as Hildy, the cab driver. (And, no, she's not a relative!). She absolutely stole the show, in my opinion. The performances by all the cast were outstanding as well. And of course, there's the music by Leonard Bernstein. How could one go wrong? Also, we were very impressed with the choreography. The ballet sequences were beautifully executed. All in all, a wonderful theater experience, and suitable for all ages. Can't wait to go again!

I'm glad that I was able to see this classic broadway show that is reflective of the broadway tradition. It celebrates the 'old' NY and helps the viewer regain an appreciation of this great city. The dancers and actors were amazing, which is also attributable to the wonderful choreography, writing and musical scores. I would say that this a must-see for anyone who is a Broadway aficionado.

The play was incredible. It was a last minute decision for the family to take one last outing before the summer ended. The advertisement popped up on my computer saying that this was the last two weeks and the play was closing. I am so happy that we went because we were able to see Misty Copeland, the first African American premiere dancer for the American Ballet Theater. She was wonderful in her first Broadway play. Our family thoroughly enjoyed it. We left the event fulfilled and extremely joyful.

The time was the 1940's and three sailors have 24hrs "On The Town" to have fun and possibly find love and romance. Misty Copeland who played Ivy Smith was fantastic along with the entire cast. The dance songs were lively and well choreographed to bring out the best performance of all the performers. Misty Copeland was amazing and I enjoyed seeing her in this type of show for the first time.

A great score! Terrific, energetic cast. Book/story is trite--old-fashioned; out-of-date. I suspect 'Town' didn't do superb box office--despite raves reviews-- because the word-of-mouth wasn't strong because of plot.

In one of the most beautiful Broadway theatres, we were entertained by an extremely talented cast on Misty Copeland;s opening night. She was wonderful as were all the cast members. They exuded enthusiasm, professionalism, character, comraderie, talent and sheer enjoyment. The story was not dated, the set design was clever and the orchestra was part of the show as was the audience. We were informed that it was the birthdate of Leonard Bernstein which added to the specialness of the evening. We highly recommend this show and really do not understand why it is not more popular and thus closing next week. It will be missed but not by us because we had the foresight and fortune to have seen it.

The overall production was superb. Each and every singer/actor/dancer lived up to expectations & exceeded them! Of course the highlight was Misty Copeland, but Tony Yazbek didn't disappoint either. Having a performer who is so multitalented - amazing voice, wonderful dancing and believable acting, was the only way to balance the fabulous dancing of Misty Copland. It was even more special to be able to see this production during the week of Leonard Bernstein's birthday. His music NEVER disappoints.

This show is a classic piece of American musical theatre. The Bernstein, Comden and Green score is fabulous containing such songs as New York, New York; Some Other Time; Ya Got Me; I Can Cook Too; and Lucky to Be Me. The production was wonderful with outstanding singing and dancing. Very well directed and choreographed. There were modern updates adding humor and visuals that would not have been acceptable years ago but are totally in sync with modern audience. I saw children, adults and seniors all enjoying the show. The cast was terrific. Star Tony Yazbeck was on vacation. His understudy Kevin Worley was ok but oddly another understudy danced the ballet. The other principals were perfect. Clyde Alves, Elizabeth Stanley, Alysha Umphress, Allison Gunn and Michael Rupert all made the most of their roles. Megan Fairchild from American Ballet Theatre danced brilliantly as Ivy Smith. My personal favorite as Jay Armstrong Johnson as Chip. He was cute and funny with incredible physical comedy. His singing, dancing and acting make him an incredible triple threat. I would rush to see him in any shows in the future. While I love innovate and new shows like Hamilton and Fun Home, I also appreciate the old school shows, especially ones with stunning dancing like On The Town. See it if you can.

On the Town was a show that was enjoyable... It just was not great! The movie with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin was Fabulous and sets the bar very high. The 3 sailors in this Broadway Production were talented and did a nice job but left me wanting more. Not enough power in their performance. Whether it was the direction or just the performance... Needed more. Nice touch with Jackie Hoffman but seems like all her parts were created for her talents. And Miss Turnstyle needs more oomph. See it for a nice evening but don't expect anything else.

My wife Bonnie andI LOVE musicals and how can you go wrong with Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green? The music, dancing, costumes, and scenery were all what you would expect from a Broadway Show. Fabulous. The story? Very formula, but you don't go to see On the Town for the story. Utterly fantastic! There is no other way to describe this Broadway revival of Leonard Bernstein's "On the Town" from 1944. The trio of sailors, performed by Tony Yazbeck (Gabey), Clyde Alves (Ozzie) and Jay Armstrong Johnson (Chip) couldn't be bettered. These boys can sing and dance. And Alysha Umphress as Hildy and Megan Fairchild as ivy ("Miss Turnstiles") are just as good; scene-stealing Jackie Hoffman is a hoot. Seeing "On The Town" is like seeing a Broadway musical and a ballet at the same time. The dancing by the entire cast was simply astounding, with very impressive set designs and choreography. If you want a great night of Broadway theatre, this revival is not to be missed.

From the Star-Spangled Banner being played at the beginning to the curtain call at the end this show was fabulous. We had balcony seats which despite being the cheapest still provided an excellent view in this newly renovated Lyric theatre. The show in the most stays true to the film with perhaps slightly less focus however on Ivy Smith (Miss Turnstiles). The cast are superb with nods to the fantastic performances by Alysha Umphress as Hildy and Jackie Hoffmans comic role as Madame Dilly (plus other minor characters). The dance scenes set the stage alight and Megan Fairchilds ballet background is highly evident in her beautiful solo pieces. Having loved the film since being a child seeing this on Broadway was everything and more I expected it to be.

Brilliant show. If you didn't see it, you missed a golden opportunity. It's too late now. This show was robbed at the Tony's. This was a tour de force of perfect casting, direction, choreography, music humor and faithfulness to a masterpiece from 1944. On The Town was a helluva show!! It was my first ever Broadway show and I sat front row and could see everything that was happening! I could hear the actors breathing, the orchestra communicating and the conversations the ensemble were having on stage. The show begins with a bang with the national anthem and then begins with the beautiful sounding song "I feel like I'm not out of bed yet" the bass voices of the men were incredible! I started crying tears of happiness three seconds into the song! It was an awesome show with an unbelieveable amount of show stopping numbers! Tony Yazbeck's "Lonely Town" was beautiful and brought me to tears. Megan Fairchild's Broadway debut is amazing to watch! That girl has so much talent! She can dance, sing and act with ease. She makes everything look as if anyone can do it because it looks effortless when she dances and sings. The cast as a whole is incredible and deserve a ton of recognition for their teamwork, togetherness and professionalism on and off stage. The stage door was a great experience for me because all of the actors I met were so nice and down to earth. You can really tell they love what they're doing! If you're thinking about seeing this show, do it! You won't regret it!

If you like old fashioned musicals, you will enjoy this show. The story line is fairly "thin" but that's OK for this type of show. My only criticism is that some of the dance numbers I found to be too long and drawn out leaving me to wonder what the point of them actually was.

Aside from some of the ballet in the stage show, I think the film is better ==tightens the plot and mines the best tunes from the score, adding the song On the Town which, surprising to me, was not in the stage score. The stage show has a lot of filler material in night clubs which to me seemed static and not very entertaining. The choreography was excellent and there is plenty of performing skills displayed by the excellent cast. Definitely worth seeing.

Entertaining, but the first act was very long and did not capture the interest of my 13 and 16 year old.

The play is highly enjoyable with great songs. It seemed to run a tad too long, but overall was a lovely NY experience.

This show is amazing. Has a little bit of everything but mostly I laughed a lot. The cast is incredibly talented and the music is fantastic.

We saw this show on the spur of the moment when we found ourselves with a Saturday afternoon free in NYC. We are glad we did. If you like dancing (and great dancing it is), this is the show for you. And the singing was also quite well done. We were gratified to see a fairly big live orchestra. It really makes a difference in the sound and the experience.

It is an amazing experience to go to a top Broadway show. This is what we saw on Saturday night (had to change the tickets from Friday to Sat at the last minute). The main actors were great dancers and singers, with comedic touches that were truly funny. The setting was very creative (loved the scenes on a subway train). Gene Kelly and friends are smiling from up there ...

Just loved this old fashioned musical. The dancing and singing were incredible. The leads were phenomenal. I could easily sit through this again. Fun, fun, fun!

My daughter and I saw On the Town 8/25/15 at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway. I had wanted to see this show since it opened and was thrilled that I could get "2 for 1" tickets through ticketmaster. The seats were fantastic! We happened to be at Misty Copeland's first show as Ivy! Loved the play, loved the music, loved the dancing, loved everything about it!

We went to see Misty Copeland as Ivy. We were on the edge of our seats the whole time. This show has it all, Comedy, Amazing dancing, great songs which make you want to run up there on stage and join in on all the fun. But, we just sat in our seats and were amazed at how great the show was. The Lyric theater is beautiful inside as well. Marble entry, winding stair case, chandeliers, all kinds of art deco finishes. What a beautiful building. If I could give 10 stars I would. Go see this production.
