This is the second time I ve gone to see the Houston Symphony performing the music of a popular rock/pop artist, the first time was Led Zeppelin, and we were not disappointed. The symphony sounded incredible as usual, and the vocalist chosen was perfect. Well done.

The amazing Houston Symphony and the music of David Bowie?! What could be better than that?! I was so excited to see this; yet when I arrived and realized there would be a singer, I thought "This is going to be so cheesy and he's going to ruin the music I love so much." I WAS WRONG. An amazing, charismatic, passionate Bowie fan with his Davy Jones (Monkees) voice paid homage to the legend. It was surprisingly fabulous.

The overall experience was was worth every penny. I bought near front tickets instead of taking advantage of the free lawn seating and glad I did. Upfront enhanced the music quality and experience. Next time we go we will always get tickets up front.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this event. We had seats towards the front and were able to enjoy a great view. The music was great, the dancing was wonderful and entertaining. I wish it had been longer than one hour, I would not have gotten bored in the least. Overall a great show!

It was a wonderful evening of music. I could have listen to it again and again. The symphony was extremely good as always and the four singers were very good and enjoyable to listen to and watch. They seemed to really enjoy the music also. It was a great night of entertainment. Although it was warm outside it was just right in the pavilion.

The Houston Orchestra was amazing. We recently moved to OKC, but I drove our two oldest children (5&4) back for this concert. It was definitely worth it! Since it was a Disney concert, it was geared towards children. I wish it had started at 7 PM instead of 8 PM. There were a lot of meltdowns going on! Despite getting up at 5:30 to travel to The Woodlands, my kids and I loved it!

Not being a regular symphony attendee, I was unsure what to expect, but my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. The selections covered a broad range and covered both familiar and new ground. In addition, the conductor's comments added an extra touch of entertainment, beyond an already excellent concert experience.

Because of the 'weather', the curtain was drawn the entire duration of the concert. Everyone had to watch the concert on big screens. Might as well watched a concert on youtube from the comfort of my home rather than sitting out in the cold Poor planning overall. Knowing the time of the year and the weather, they should've accounted for heaters for the band on the stage.

I paid, I went, but I didn't watch the Houston Symphony Holly Jolly Spectacular, WHY? because they kept the curtain down because it was cold and expected us to watch the screens!!! They could have placed tall heaters throughout the stage to keep the performers warm, come on , don't even have it if you're afraid of the cold. I was very disappointed and left after the first piece.

Curtain stayed closed the whole performance. All we saw were shadows and screen shots on the video screens. They could have been in downtown Houston for all we knew. It wasn't that cold out. All they needed to do was some pre-planning and have heaters blowing warm air under the performers chairs. I feel paying customers should get half their money back.

All elements very enjoyable... Conductor animatedly overcame the limitations of the evening... Cold weather required the curtain remain down to retain heat on the stage... which was a big disappointment for us. But the video presentation alleviated that to a great degree. All in all... a successful event.. and we're looking forward to next year!!

We have been to the Symphony's Holly Jolly Pops several times before and it's always been fun and festive but this year not so much. Granted it was a chilly night but to keep the orchestra behind a full stage curtain was disappointing at best, the show was displayed on the big screens but you attend live events to see the performers not watch TV! It had been cold for several days so it was not a surprise it was cold on the night, surely putting heaters on the stage would have kept performers and instruments warm, plus the programme was cut short. The musical choices were not particularly festive either, except the final sing along.

Very disappointing. Who pays for second row sears only to be told the orchestra would be playing behind a curtain. Ths screens that close are blurry and the event was of good. We are at the woodlands pavilion not in Antarctica. They syrl could have brought in heating for the orchestra. It was not really cold. It was a winter. On set. What do they expect. Will never go to this again.

With the great Houston Symphony Orchestra on stage the expectations were high. But, insted of familiar classic and catchy symphony`s is was more of a educational talk show. My kids got bored pretty quickly :/ Hopefully we could get some more Grieg, Bethoveen and scary version of songs familiar to kids.

The concert was great, the music was awesome and the video that went with it was stunning and inspiring. I thought from the description that the video would be playing for the entire concert, so i was a bit disappointed that the first half of the show was only music. Not quite as described but awesome.

From the advertisement, we expected an audio/visual display. The whole first half was just music (and not even music one would expect to carry the theme of Earth and Space). The second half had a series of slideshow photos that any high schooler could put together from Google Images. It appeared to be part a geography lesson and part geology Was this another National Endowment for the Arts rescue project? HUGELY disappointed! The Houston Symphony did the best it could with the limited material it was given. As an aside, the cost of refreshments was ridiculous...$8.50 for a hotdog, $14.00 for a beverage. Next time we attend Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion we will eat before we arrive.

Houston Symphony The Music of Michael Jackson was just plain bad. The person they had singing Michael Jackson's songs was weak at best. He spent more time reminding the audience about himself than talking about Michael and his incredible life and musical career.

I was pleasantly surprised by this event. I didn't expect much when I bought tickets but it turned out to be a very fun evening. The symphony sounded great and was an outstanding accompaniment to the vocalist performing many of Michael Jackson's hits from the Jackson 5 era all the way through the Thriller and Bad era. Highly recommended!!

I brought my two daughters with me, ages 9 and 12. We had a wonderful time. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. We are planning to go to the symphony more often. This was Hans Graf's last performance as conductor of The Houston Symphony. I am happy I was able to be there to see him one last time. He will be truly missed.

My wife and I have been to many symphony concerts in the Pavillion. This did not live up to the Houston Symphony's usual stellar performance. The selection of music was poor and had very little "holly jolly" included; the conductor tried to be amusing which he failed at badly, and the dance group distracted from the overall performance. We will not attend this even next year.

Chaotic: people coming and going long after things started; some got up from time to time to buy huge tubs of popcorn and drinks. You wouldn't get away with that at a Broadway play! Audience: Rude, Noisy. Constant talking and laughing from audience; not turning cell phones off, taking photos when told Orchestra requested it not be so. Music: very good, but orchestra folded up as soon as conductor left the stage at the end; he didn't return for possible encore. Performance lasted only about an hour and a half; no intermission. On the way out we noted the 'Band Bus' leaving, max 10 minutes after conductor left the stage. They were obviously in a hurry to get out of there. I wouldn't have been concerned about it all if this was a rock type concert or the like. Parking: Thought I checked the box for a pass, but after calling TM, appeared I did not. Asked if that could be added, but was told it was not--all filled up. But upon arrival there was plenty room in adjacent Venue garage 25 ft away for $5.

It was very difficult for me to enjoy the symphony because the acoustics were sub-par and competing with the noise of the crowd. No effort was really made to keep the audience quiet in order to actually hear the beautiful music. I won't pay for tickets on this ever again. I could have attended for free and sat only a few rows back for the same noise!

I am a huuuuge Jaws fan and I was so excited to finally attend a Jaws / John Williams concert. I was more surprised to learn not only was the Houston Symphony playing the soundtrack but the venue played the entire movie - while the Hou Symphony played the background music!! WOW! The lighting fantastically followed the beat and rhythm of the movie. My only flaw was I saw too close to stage and I didnt have the best view to the 3 screens. I had to turn in my chair to watch the side screen. But I would do it again and again. I cant wait until the JW movie symphony show in Sept!

It was OK ... little disappointed ... was expecting more, was geared to much to kiddies ... was not so scary or the music was not scary. Was expecting to hear music to Dracula, or Frankenstein or other scary type music, not Spiderman or Aladin (maybe Disney villian music would have been better ... visual effects disappointng ... I am a graphic designer and event planner, I could have done a heck of a lot better. Not sure I would rush back next time. Also the usher placed us in the wrong seats, in the middle of the show we had to move. WTF Finally, if you are planning to have food and drink service, it needs to end before the show begins ... nothing worse is to enjoy a show and see servers interrupting your view and being distracted

We have been attending Hocus Pocus Pops for several years and the playlist is getting shorter and repetitive. Always Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Apprentice. Its supposed to be about Halloween so why not incorporate music from Halloween movies or spooky classical pieces (Dance Macabre springs to mind). Until the program is changed we won't attend another.

The concept of the show is excellent, but sound was less-than-perfect: during the first half of the show, the orchestra could barely be heard. Things got better later, specially when "I'm the Walrus" and "A day in the life" were played. Other than that, I recommend the show for those hard-core Beatles fans like myself.

Not sure what to think. I assumed the symphony would play Halloween music since the event was advertised for kids and family. There was Stravinski, Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, etc, but nothing from Halloween films (Beetlejuice, Coraline, Peanuts, Hocus Pocus, etc). Also, no visual stimulation for the kids. The camera was solely focused on the orchestra. We took three kids who were more interested in their popcorn and drinks than the event. Won't return to this.

The stellar combination of Houston Symphony's new director, Andres Orozco-Estrada and guest violinist, James Ehnes left my daughter and I wanting more! My daughter is studying the standing bass in the 7th grade, so we attend orchestral events as often as possible, but the passion and dedication to these pieces were unmatchable. Though the crowd was quite thin this night, even the players that weren't soloists showed passion in their performances. I'm hoping others will catch wind and attend these bargain concerts in the pavillion to show better appreciation of these talents! This event was friendly to all ages and encouraged kids of all ages to even test out instruments in the foyer.

I bought three tickets (good seats) at The Planets. My son was on his way to the theater from work and my husband and I were getting our "will call" tickets at about 5 min. before 8:00 when we heard an announcement that there would be no late seating. Our son was not going to make the 8:00 seating, so I talked to an usher and he said that they would not let him take a seat. I called him to give him the bad news, and he said he would go back home. Imagine my feelings as we were handed the program and saw two numbers (not The Planets) followed by an intermission before The Planets started. On top of that, The Planets did not start until 9:00. When we were surrounded by people seating themselves right and left during the performance, along with loud children running around, we tried talking our son into returning, but he had already reached his home and then did not want to try the hour ride again. I was really upset.

The performance started late then they played 2 segments of Stravinsky for approximately 17-20 minutes. Then a 20 minutes intermission (that should have never happened) that lasted for 24 minutes. Then the start of the Planets, and my youngest son is a sleep, it is now right at 9:00. The performance was good not over the top but that may be due to the acoustics and the very rude people that continue to talk around me. I thought that in purchasing tickets to sit in seats close to the front that people would have more respect for others. Half way through the performance people were getting up during the performance and leaving, I was astonished at the rudeness and the lack of control by the staff to control the exodus. When all was said and done I believe we started to leave around 10:00. The video show provided by NASA on the center screen I felt should have also been shown simultaneously on the outside screens not just the one in the middle. I am reconsidering purchasing tickets in the future for performances that I would like to bring my children to.

The Houston Symphony performance at the Woods Pavillion on Thursday evening could have been so much more. The concept was wonderful, and the HD visuals of the NASA images were stunning along with the performance of Holst's "The Planets." However, the Symphony made the fatal mistake of opening the concert with two relatively avant-garde pieces, and to make matters worse, the sound system was not amplifying the orchestra to a very substantial degree at the beginning. So the stage was set for audience (especially CHILD) unrest as the almost inaudible performance was upstaged by crowd restlessness and conversation. Top that off with a twenty minute intermission following a mere twenty minutes of music, and what could have been an AMAZING hour dragged into a barely enjoyable TWO hours on a school night surrounded by restless little ones...

Outstanding production with great video. Everything I wanted to see and more from The Planets - HD. However the first two numbers I could have done without, but that is just a matter of personal choice.

The music was wonderful; however, it was not loud enough to hear throughout the pavillion. Also, I purchased full price seats and couldn't see the screen. It was disappointing not to have the visuals with the music.

The pictures of the planets were extraordinary. The orchestra played perfectly. It was a relaxing evening with some of the first beautiful weather of the season. This is a must see event!

My favorite part of the presentation were the individual medley's of the planets. Some I liked more than others, notably Jupiter, Mars, and Neptune. I found Venus and Mercury forgetable, sorry, but this is my opinion isn't it? Also, I could have done without the first 20 minute mini presentation which was even more forgetable. But I would have liked to hear Jupiter and Mars over again, just for fun.

The NASA images that accompanied Holst - The Planets - were incredible. I had no idea that such images even existed of these planets.

The event was absolutely wonderful! I didn't give it the 5 stars only because the first two pieces (not The Planets) were too much in the piano side so, with the venue being outside, it was hard to enjoy them fully. Otherwise, it was absolutely magnificent!!!

My husband and I were blown away by the 4 outstanding broadway singers backed by the Houston symphony and the gay men's chorus. They danced and sang as though they were in the real musical. The audience gave several standing ovations for the spendid performances. Their voices were so powerful that they didn't need microphones.

It was a very cheerful performance with enthusiastic singers and musicians alike. Very festive atmosphere was created by all participants. Good selection of pieces, wonderful voices, very personal and engaging performers. I will recommend this event. To get full musical experience, though, I would've prefered an indoor theater (acustics, air conditioning, etc.).

It was a wonderful performance. I did not know they were going to have Broadway performers sing the songs. All four performers were amazing! We didn't want the night to end.

My wife and I enjoyed the performance a lot. The orchestra was great and you can tell the conductor is on top of things. Also, the performers were amazing! The only negative I have is for the audience. It astounded me to see the amount of rudeness as people were talking (and sometimes practically yelling) during some of the pieces. Perhaps I was raised differently, but I was always of the impression that you go to symphonies to go and enjoy the music, not talk through it. Some of the teens out there acted as though they were raised in a barn!

The symphony is never bad. I personally get excited as soon as they start tuning their instruments. This event paired commonly known classical music with performers that you could not take your eyes off of. The Cirque is always a favorite of mine as well, so this was like chocolate and peanut butter, a wonderful pairing.

As usual, the Houston Symphony performance was wonderful under the baton of Hans Graf. Despite the bad weather, it was a wonderful combination of one of my favorite symphonies by Mozart and another by Beethoven.

The caliber of the musicians as a whole were excellent. The selections of music chosen left a lot to be desired. With the exception of Harry Potter, not a child in the group had a clue who the other composers, or music were about. What child has any idea about a 50 year old movie named Psyco !!! For something that is directed at children, you need to play childrens music..ie..StarWars and things of their age group. We had 11 and 13 years olds present who were bored out of their minds, and that is sad.

Music was superb but there could have been more theactrics or at least some interaction with the audience to make it more entertaining. I have been to many symphonies and audience participation of some sort is usually involved.
