I love this band! This is my 3rd year in a row seeing them live, and I enjoy their show every year! Cedric (the lead singer) was not as wild and upbeat as he usually is, but his voice was incredible. And he still threw in some unforgettable dance moves. :-) Their music is so good, you cant help but dance with him. Until the last song, they had to cut it short because his voice was hurting. Basically, they know how to put on an amazing show. No doubt about it. Swing your hips, not your fists. See you guys next year! ;-)

The show was like a psychedelic trip from the 70's with a millennium twist. The lead singer demanded your attention with his Robert plant like charisma and his Robert Daltrey like corded mike tricks and his outstanding vocal range! but shared the lime light with the other members of the band a true professional . The drummer was simply amazing in a class all by himself .The back bone of the whole performance . The Mars Volta Is a well seasoned tight live band. Two thumbs up!!!

I had only seen them at the Austin City Limits festival, but from afar. In this smaller venue it was a whole different experience. They were very loud, yet very clear. There was a great energy coming from the band. I would definitely recommend them.

This was an awesome preview of material from the Octahedron album which had not yet been released at the time of the show. They played Cotopaxi, and Teflon from the new album. My favorite part is in the attached video where at the fifty four second mark they went into what to me sounded like the guitar rifff from Tom Sawyer. To see them in a venue of this size was an event not to be missed by Volta fans.

I arrived early after driving an 1hr and 40min run from L.A. to Ventura. the scene on the streets on oldtown Ventura were of many a shape of people, the volta fans are very unique in many ways. we come to expect the best performances thus far. anticipating the new tracks, wondering which old favs will be played. With a cold drink in hand, finished off the drink and headed in 10 mins after door opening time. ........we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited......I'm was hugging hand rails weary of drink, stage darkens , they began!!!!and played some older EP jams, some De-loused madness and stuck in the more power tunes of the new Octa album and Since we've be wrong. Over all a 9 , for us who had to wait more than an hour past scheduled showtime with no extended set was a let down. all dispersed after 2 hours of music with one comment in my head. Cedric had said something to the effect -" I hope your ready for a lot of music tonight, if you don't like it you can go home and play your records".......It was good to see they still play with such ferocity on stage, the group was smaller TMV group but sounded equally great.I will not have to buy another ticket for awhile or until the next years volta album.

the only thing i didn't like that we where waiting 2 hours for them to come out, which i think was a bunch of bs but at the end when everything was over i forgot about that and remembered how they kicked ass. The drummer, Thomas Pridgen, was amazing as always

There wasn't any laser light show. Just incredibly tight rock music. It took a while for the band to come out while their crew tuned and re-tuned guitars and sound checked everything sixty times. The crowd got restless but when TMV came out everyone lost their mind. The sound quality was really amazing. I was right in the front and it really sounded superb. I'd never seen Pridgen drum live he was really powerful. The show was really relaxed and organic, Cedric took a break to crack jokes about Omar, Pridgen and Marcel smoked a blunt midset. Nonetheless, they consistently played with an amazing amount of groove and intensity. If you ever get the chance to be front row at TMV don't miss it.

the Mars Volta again, did not disappoint. Mind blowing performance and a lot of new stuff from their new album which is also pretty amazing. The one thing that really sucked though (which is why I gave it only 4 stars) is that they went on over an hour late (almost 90min) ....and that kinda sucked for everyone especially since they were the only band playing. other than that ....KICKED ASS!

It was my first Mars Volta show & I can't wait to see them again. The show was unbelievable! Incredible performance!! The way the band feeds off one another & plays together in synch is amazing. I was seven months pregnant when I went to the show, it was the first time my baby was moving consistantly. It didn't hurt, if felt as if my baby was dancing. After the baby is born I will be playing Mars Volta music for him & I am positive the sound will be soothing to his ears. He already listens to them while in the womb, which is insisted by my boyfriend who is by far their number one fan. Because of him, my son is going to come out singing the words & understand what each song is about!!

Its the mars Volta, what more do I have to say. Great fun. Great energy from both the band and the crowd. I enjoy seeing this band in small clubs and theaters. I cannot recall the setlist, but I know they played a number of selections off of the new album . All very good. The reason I give this show a 4 star rating is because of the venue. The sound is sub-standard and the security can be horrible. The drinks were expensive, but the bartenders poured ample alcohol.

This show was amazing, I've seen the Volta before but never in this intimate setting. Truly epic performance, Cedric was definitely at the top of his game. The new material sounds amazing live, especially Teflon and Desperate Graves. Adrian and Paul will be missed but the show was just as intense and epic without them. Hopefully I can go see them at Outside Lands. Definitely worth the trip.

This show was a preview of the new album, happening just a week before it was released. They played most, if not all, of the new album including some re-worked versions of their classics. The sound was great, though very loud (I actually lost my hearing about half-way through the show, but still had a smile). A fantastic evening with a wonderful band.

Although the two now-gone members will be missed, especially Adrian's saxophone on songs where he was prominent, the lineup reminded me of good 'ol classic Mars Volta from their early years, with just five and later, six members. This isn't an album review, but it must be noted that their previous album, "The Bedlam In Goliath," contained more, shall we call it noise? than previous albums and their new album "Octahedron" went in a completely opposite direction. The setlist was heavy with new songs, as five of them were performed, but altogether it was a good mix of songs from the band's catalog. Omar, surprisingly, was on backing vocals most of the night and, unsurprisingly, Cedric was up to his regular antics what with detuning Omar's guitar whenever he got near and making fun of him as well, comparing Omar, along with his bandmate brother Marcel, to what he likened "Former Disney-Children turned Dictator." Midway through the set Cedric gave a speech before performing Ilyena, calling out all the people that ridicule others for going in different directions with their music and that people should not hate, nor make fun of, people for what they create when they have put their entire heart into it and have worked so hard to get where they are now. Without mentioning themselves, we know it is the Volta who is getting what can be called a backlash for the changes in their recent recordings, but change is what they're about and it's what makes them "Classic" Mars Volta. It's what keeps us coming to their performances such as this one.

The Mars Volta always kick ass, every single show. So no worries on the performance level. They have a stream-lined band now, with six members. They were AWESOME. The Ventura Theatre, on the other hand, although it is quite small and an extremely cute old theater, nicely decorated, etc... but the acoustics SUCK. I've been there a couple times before, several years ago, and I stopped going because I didn't like the sound. I risked it again for TMV, but I am done. Never again going to that venue. Oh well!

The set was awesome, band sounded great, but waaaaayyy too short. this was the 2nd time ive seen the mars. the 1st time was in tulsa oklahoma, they played for 2 hrs and 40 mins str8. best show in the world, goin nuts rockin out. at the elec factory, they were dull, and only played for 1.5 hrs. i felt like i got robbed. we waited after the show for the band to come out. the drummer and bassist were madd cool, so was ikey. omar slipped out like immediately after the show and went in the bus and didnt say anything to us then cedrick came out with an entourage of guards and didnt even look at us as he got on the bus. he wasnt wrappin the cord around him self or doing anything cool onstage like he was in oklahoma. also, when i seen em the 1st time, there were like 12 guys in the band. the other night they had like 6. big let down, they didnt play their best songs...kinda sucked

This was the 4th time I ve seen the Mars Volta and the 2nd time it has been at the Electric Factory. It was an amazing experience. A fantastic set list that touched on their whole gambit of work as opposed to their most recent album. The band was smaller than usual without the horn players. They were missed but the band was still solid. I love to see Omar smile while he is playing guitar. You can tell the band is really having a good time. Cedric as usual looks a little sick, spitting in a trash can and sipping a tea that keeps being replenished by an assistant. They did not use the screens on the side of venue as they did last time I saw them. This was somewhat disappointing but I was still impressed. As usual, there was no opener but you do not feel gypped because these guys work hard. If you are on the fence I would advise you to go see them. Go with an open mind and just enjoy yourself.

When I arrived at the venue I was kind of worried. It looked like a pretty scummy crowd, and the general area wasn't that great either. However when I got inside everything was fine, the venue was really cool and most the people around me were friendly and I met some cool people. When the band came out everyone went wild, and when they started playing there was a mad dash to the front. Much bad dancing followed. The energy of the band was amazing right from the first wave of awesome. I went with 4 other people and each of us had a different favorite band member because they were all just too cool. Cedric's vocals were a little hard to hear at first, but the sound guys eventually got on it and by the end his signature highs were glass-breaking. He has not gotten any less crazy and still does his dancing and jumps and microphone moves I love so much. Not only is he an amazing frontman and vocalist, but Cedric has the badassness to back it up. It's safe to say he was my favorite. Omar seemed a little peeved for a very short while, but by the end he was laughing and having a great time destroying sound with his guitar. His guitar skills were prevelant throughout the show. Ikey was completely absorbed in his playing and did a great job, and he gave the crowd these jazzy "what's good" looks during his breaks that one of my friends thought was the coolest thing ever. Thomas of course shook the venue with his rythmic mayhem, and he proved an inspiration to my drummer friend. Juan did his work with passion and provided us with an awesome bass solo. Marcel did his job flawlessly, though he was the hardest to notice of the 6 musicians on stage. Everything about the performance just blew my mind, and there is no doubt I am seeing The Mars Volta again. My only wish was that the show was longer. I would've rather the show never ended, but I definitely would've been happy to stay for at least another hour. They packed more than the capacity of their elecricity into their time though, and the experience was still worth more than I paid. There is no way I'm ever going to forget the show, or the piercing stare of the awesome Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

My friend Dougie told me that they were coming to play a show in Philadelphia. I never really checked them out before so I decided to go but was a bit skeptical. The concert last night Oct 10th was great. Cedric seemed to have a throat problem because he kept drinking hot tea every two songs, but he sounded good. Omar was amazing as expected. The show was loud and they played really good songs. Opening song was ineratic esp which was my favorite song of the night. The only bad part about the show was there was no encore. Maybe they had to get on the road or Cedric just didn't want to sing anymore. Overall it was a great show and I am so glad to have seen them.

I can't imagine that anyone who can get their head around The Mars Volta would not have enjoyed this show. If you're anything like me you are a little disappointed at the direction of rock, The Mars Volta comes correct and doesn't let go. These men can bust a tune and are all exceptional within the preformance. Omar Rodrequiz is a phenomenal guitar player who orchestrates it all. Pigeon(sp) the drummer is a mad man who just blows the competition away. As for Cedric I love his moody, melancholy madness he delivers. They just rocked my world! I appreciate the vast catalogue of music these guys have created. To see them live was a must. I dragged two friends who also have similar taste in music as I but do not have the deep appreciation for the wild ride that their music takes its listeners. Everyone should see the eloquently bold music of the Mars Volta!! I hope they return soon as we are left with the likes of Nickleback,3 doors down, stained, chevelle,Kings of Leon and Kid Rock. Not that they are all crap it just pales in comparison. So Mars Volta Boston wants you back pronto! As they rocked the house and people got their monies worth!

Wow. That is all I have to say. The Mars Volta are incredible. Whether it is one of their rocking tunes or one of their slower, more progressive songs, they held the audiences attention for every single second. From the opening note of Son et Lumiere/Inertiatic ESP to the last note of the Widow, it was never a boring concert. My only criticism was the lack of an encore. They left the stage suddenly, and it sort of felt like they left the audience hanging. But all in all, it was amazing.

The lights darken. Dramatic mariachi music come on the PA. A trumpet is trilling, you expect to see Clint Eastwood step out from behind a rock dressed in a Mexican poncho. The audience is howling in anticipation. The musicians gather on stage and you start to hear quiet guitar sounds. The first word from the singer's lips is "Clipside". Yesss! It's Inertiatic ESP, the first song from their first album. Tight hits on the intro with the whole band, with lightman getting in on it as well with white flashes, "Now I'm Lost...", and we are in! Explosion of sound erupts. The madness ensues. The sound is loud and abrasive and at first the guitar is overpowering and giving us these high harmonics, so it is hard to hear everything that is going on. But that gets better as the set continues. Cedric (lead singer) is belting out those inhumanly high pitched notes, and Omar (guitarist) is pushing the sound with his consistently masterful technique. Pridgon (the drummer) is already sweating on the first song it appears. He is SUCH a monster on the kit - he alone is worth the price of admission. About halfway through the show my friend wants to go up front so I follow him through the crowd and we make it to about 10feet from the stage. We are in the pit now. This is not a crazy elbow-to-the-face mosh, but people can't help themsleves. The music is so infectious we have to move. Everyone is jumping and pushing and it is chaos. Girls are in it too b/c is not too agressive. Just letting off some of that steam and it is so perfect. Cedric says something like "you are witnessing a Spinal Tap moment" when the backdrop falls to reveal a new backdrop (their painted backdrops are awesome, BTW). But it doesn't fall all the way and one side of it is held up - stuck - a tech dude has to climb a little ladder up about 50 feet to unhook it. Classic! Unfortunately they stop promptly at 90 minutes, with no encore. :( TMV shows are always frustrating b/c they seem so short. But if those guys went longer than 90minutes they would probably not make it through their tour. This is high energy rock, not for the light hearted. Certainly not for everyone, but for those who seek abandon through complex, aggressive music, sprinkled with sexy mellow vocal chants, this is IT.

This truly was an incredible show. I was expecting somewhat of a chilled out show with most of the songs from the new album, but they played 4 from De-loused which made everyone incredibly happy. Cedric sounded fantastic, Ikey was on fire and Omar lit up the Viscera Eyes solo. There were no weak points at all in the show, although they do have a tendency to stretch out the outro to Roulette Dares for a bit too long. Everything was spectacular though, and I can't wait to see them again. If you're only fan of their old stuff, there's still plenty of reason to go- they even played Eunuch Provocateur which was a huge surprise to me. Once again, unbelievable!

The Mars Volta performed excellently. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the lead guitarist for The Mars Volta, blew away the crowd with his very talented and complex guitar riffs. Thomas Pridgen showed true passion behind the drums, wailing out with such superb skill. And of course, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the lead vocalist for the band; with his very passionate and intense vocals. I would overall rank this band among the legends of rock. This is because of the passion and heart that goes into each and every song/performance. This concert will be remembered as one of the shows that shook our foundation, and will stay lodged in my mind until I am dead and gone.

Despite my best efforts, I could not sway any of my friends to buy a ticket (as an aside, the $20 ticket ended up being $35+ thanks to excessive online fees), so I was flying solo. I drove down to beautiful Ventura and got in line for the show. My musical tastes vary widely from the noisy and absurd to more accessible mainstream, and I must say of all the shows I've been to The Mars Volta delivers like no other. The lead singer, Cedric Bixler Zavala carries in his voice the howling essence of Robert Plant but his lyrics speak abstract tales of lust and loss through dark ("A mass of gallon sloth as flies have walls for feet") and often perplexing ("The kiosk in my temporal lobe is shaped like Rosalyn Carter") imagery. Meanwhile, the man with the left-handed guitar flicks away at six strings in a blur. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the co-founder and composer for the band has just as huge a stage presence as Cedric, and together they seem to electrify the air around them. This particular show in Ventura was spilling over with goodness. Not only did we get to hear four new songs a bit before they were 'officially' released, but some old favorites as well, including: Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus, Roulette Dares, and The Widow. In fact, they touched on just about every album except for Tremulant. A few songs I found to be particularly exciting... Ilyena was thumpin real good. I was surprised and delighted that Cedric nailed the song so well. Also I really think their new song Cotopaxi would make a great song to play during a car chase, and hearing it live it sounds much better than on the album. I got a bad (good) case of the shivers as soon as the breakdown started. Omar had some good thrash/jam moments during Goliath and Viscera Eyes and I wish he would've brought the band back for an encore song but I left satisfied. All in all an awesome, very exciting (and sweaty for those in the pit) show. If I had one comment to consider a complaint, it would be that I could not hear Ikey except for one short solo he got in the middle somewhere...we love you Ikey. Crank it up my man! See you in San Francisco fellas.

Their vocals and music were very close to the recorded track, but infused energy of the performance makes this a must see event next time around.

Mars Volta did not let me down despite the rumors that the band's live shows have been regressing as of late. There was not a moment during the show where I didn't want to hug the band and thank them for the beautiful music. I would love to see this show again! :D!

TMV delivered an extremely solid performance despite Cedric (vocalist) having a bad cold. The setlist was perfect. It was actually full of more hard-rocking thrash songs than I expected. There were a few of their slow, ambient, psychedelic songs, but the majority was hard stuff (my preference anyway). The sound was very good, with only a couple of very small issues with Cedric's mic volume. I really loved how each member of the group had time to shine. For example, Cedric requested that the bass be raised for one song, and the bassist slapped out an amazing groove while Omar's lead guitar took a temporary backseat. The drummer was truly amazing, his energy and big smile a sight to behold. Keyboards and percussion were perfect as well. The only disappointment was the lack of encore, but that was understandable. Cedric was really quite sick. He had to blow his nose and drink hot tea the entire show and said he felt nauseated. All things considered, he did an amazing job!

I would never pass up a Mars Volta show but this last show was below average quality. There was no warm up band and yet they only played for about an hour and 40 minutes. They only played one song from Frances the Mutes and were unresponsive to the "one more song" request. They also should stop using stage lights that are more intense than staring into the sun. It deters viewers from actually viewing.

First they came out to some old school Mexican dual music. They preformed for about twenty minutes and then some drunk guy was moshing and had to get taken out by security guards. Even cedric commented on that. Some point in the show the bassist pulls out this face melting solo that was great to see a bass solo for once. One thing I do really remener is that cedric was spitting soooo much and had fresh cups of tea or whatever brought to him every five minutes. Hahaha. Omar was very fun to watch he kept doing weird shuffles and head shakes. Very cool. They played their last song and the jumped up and ran off. Next thing I know the staff was tearing equiptment down and throwing picks and sticks to the fans. I got down there too late and I didn't get a thing. But I did get to see one of the best bands ever.

i heard some bad reviews of this venue but i enjoyed myself throughly. The band rocked and played a great set list. Only thing that help the band back was the lameness of the crowd! C'mon Detroit!

An Amazing Show To Go See, Besides The Idiots In The Crowd (A Fight Right Up Front, Someone Throwing a Empty Beer Cup On Stage) It was An Amazing Show. The Same As The Last Time I've Went To Go Watch Them, Cedric Loses His Voice Toward The End and Stars Hitting Some Un-Godly Notes. Tight Set, Slimmed Down Band Lineup, INSANE LIGHT SHOW!!! The 3 Backdrops Were Mind Blowing With The Lights and Illumination Where You Would See Hidden Images Under Different Lights!!!

great set, but it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short; every other time I've seen them, they've played at least 2 solid hours, and as much as 2:45.

Overall i really enjoyed the show, but there were a few things I was disappointed with. The first of which was how short it was. The Mars Volta actually began to play at around 8:15pm, which was fine, but the show ended at around 9:30pm. Now to me this seems like a very short show for a $35 ticket. When the show ended it came as a bit of a shock, because they just left the stage and immediately began to pack up their equipment. They didn't do an encore even though everyone in the room was chanting for one. The final point that upset me was that because of the style of music that the Mars Volta plays I don't think the room was suited for it, the music sounded really distorted, even for a live show. Now for the good stuff, the stage performance and light show where fantastic, and the venue was great too, although I wish they would have played L'Via L'Viaquez.

They played songs I've never heard live, they opened with Son et Lemier and followed that up with inertiatic ESP! They played a song off of Missing Chromosome, and a song off of Frances. They played music from every album. I could not have asked for a better concert experience. Jaun tore it up on the bass, Omar was spectacular, Thomas kicked out the jams, and Cedric sounded the best I've heard him. Very memorable show, and very intimate. They played just under 2 hours, but it was all quality music.

The Mars Volta was amazing, as always. The stage was too small for the entire band to perform, so only 5 people played at last night's show. This could have part of the reason why they had only played for just over an hour. I would suggest that The Mars Volta play at a venue like The Emerald Ballroom in Mount Clemens, Mi next time they come around the Metro Detroit area. The Emerald Ballroom venue is larger than Clutch Cargos and the stage is much larger, which would allow room for every member of the band to perform.

Cedric (vocalist) seemed to have a cold or bad allergies, so he wasn't hitting some of the notes like he has when I've seen them before, but he managed to approach those parts of the in a different way that gave us a new take on the song. They played songs from each album, especially some old favorites. This was my third time seeing TMV, and they didn't disappoint. I can't wait for them to come to Michigan again!

The show was great. The band had a high energy performance and they were incredible. They were loud and fast. I only wish the crowd, which consisted of a lot of kids, was into the show a little more. I truely believe the band feeds off the crowd, especially Cedric, and the crowd just didnt seem to get into the show. I think that has something to do with TMV not a nationally well-known band and the kids not being familiar with TMV catalog. I rated four stars and not five only because of the show ended so abruptly. I counted an hour and twenty-five minutes for the whole set. The band stormed off the stage after Wax Simulchra and didnt come out for an encore. I think they decided not to come back out for an encore due to Cedric possibly being under the weather. He seemed to be taking in tea between every song....and I mean a piping hot cup of tea between every single song. He was blowing his nose and hawking out phlem all through the set. I imagine he was not feeling well. Overall, I loved the show. I can wait for them to come around again, hopefully when everbody in the band is healthy.

Absolutely amazing show. Mars Volta is always punctual, they came on at 8:40 and played until like 10:20, a little short definetly would have liked to have heard more but for what they did play was just awe inspiring. There sound on stage is so crystal clear, everything from Cedric's perfect pitch voice, to Omar's wailing on the guitar, And if you have seen Mars Volta but have not seen there drummer that they have had since Bedlam of Goliath you need to see them. Thomas Prigden is his name and he is insane behind the set. Great live performance.

At this point, The Mars Volta have enough albums released to only play their best hits for a couple hours straight. It's thoroughly entertaining, but personally I miss the form of their earlier concerts in which they spent considerable time in between songs to just jam and solo around the whole band. It was at those times that the raw musicianship of the band's members really stood out. Still, it was an excellent concert and I have no real complaints. The light show and backdrop artwork was as crazy as ever. Definitely a must-see!!

we got there super early, but saw nothing. Although i believe some of the crew went down to the jazz festival for fun because it was. The concert was the greatest. Our seats were very reasonable, i just wish people would have had the balls to bum rush and forget that their were (fold-up, removable) seats. We skipped around until the staff encounters became one too many and we were told to "stay in our seats or I'm gonna get the cop." When did it become wrong to want to enjoy a concert? during our skip around CEDRIC jumped in to the aisle and was singing, we all moved towards him. He was literally A FOOT away from me, AAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! That was the coolest thing ever, this has happened at other concerts i've been but the Mars Volta invokes a feeling in me that just makes me feel like i am one with the music. I LOVE THE MARS VOLTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
