Gary Numan

Inimitable new wave necromancer Gary Numan is as celebrated for cult classics like \"Down in the Park\" as he is for mainstream '80s superhits like \"Cars.\" Masterfully balancing mass appeal and a darker edge, Numan led audiences through the full gamut of emotions at his 2013 shows, shifting from vitriolic sneer to vulnerable yelp and back again as he wended his way through fan favorites like \"Complex\" and \"We Are Glass.\" Featuring a full band, an army of icy synths, and his signature lighting design, Numan's 2014 tour dates will deliver more of the intense spectacle he's become known for.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:English-born G.

What an amazing show. Had never been too big a follower of Gary Numan but always liked a few songs, the ones that got some airplay...I never had heard of the opening act : Me Not You and was pleasently surprised. The girl lead and vocalist was so good as was the female drummer who killed it on those drums off to the far left of the stage. With a male on the MOOG board and another on rhythm guitar who had many solos they were tight and had a lo-fi vibe with old school synth undertones and a coolness air about them. Anticipation for Gary Numan was at fever pitch. They stepped out after a 45 min opening set and quick 25 min gear breakdown. It was about 9:15 and the main act was a go ! Did not have a low poi t or let down for 1 hr and 45 min ! From song to song they shreaded on guitars, synths and drums...Did not realize how etherial and haunting they were...not too dark but totally underground with industrial beats and a twist of gothic. In a way kinda like a FRONT 242 meets a tame Marilyn Manson... An amazing show and so glad to have been there. Highly reccommend it and am now a big fan !

Show was really great. Sound, lights and effects were all top shelf. Gary sounded better than he did 25 years ago. He played for a solid hour and 45 and wasted zero time with talk-just song after song. Anyone who thinks the best thing out of Gary Numan was Cars is in for a spectacular upset in the best manner possible. St. Andrews looks really great with the new bathrooms and other upgrades. Drinks were well mixed and service quick.

As a follower of Numan since he performed "Praying to the Alians" on SNL and this being, sadly, the only 3rd show I've seen, the performance was right on target. I over heard a fellow concert goer say " this is the best show he saw Numan perform", in a small club I would agree! Considering Gary was not 100% and he let the crowd know, I was inpressed with how well he performed and even letting the fans sing a few songs was a quite the experience. The show was AWESOME!!!

In short: Gary Numan has only gotten *better* over the years. The Pleasure Principle is my favourite album of all time, and I've watched DVDs of Numan performing the album around the world during the Touring Principle Tour of 1980--and though those performances were amazing, they were easily surpassed by Numan's current run of shows. Of course, seeing the Man Himself live is by default cooler than just watching a DVD, but Numan's stage presence has greatly evolved over the years. He's just an amazing performer: animated, energetic, clearly enthralled by the music he's making--but very humble and fan-oriented at the same time (a quality I find especially endearing in performers with such a long and varied career as Numan's). Unfortunately, the poor guy had been ill for several days before the show and, as he put it, "my voice is shit tonight," so he just couldn't sing in the range of several tracks from The Pleasure Principle--at which point he asked the crowd to do the vocals for him. Now, I don't know about you, but having the chance to sing along with Gary Numan in a crowd of hundreds, most of whom knew the songs by heart like I did, was an experience just as amazing as hearing him sing them! A Totally Bitchin'(tm) experience. Numan also played for a *long* time--well over an hour--performing not only the entirety of The Pleasure Principle but a number of his newer tracks *and* the requisite classics like "Down in The Park" and "Are 'Friends' Electric?". Though his newer material is a lot more industrial and heavy, it still fit well with the older stuff, and actually kicked up the energy level of the whole show a notch. So, yeah....Well-played, Herr Numan. Well-played.

Having been a fan of Numan's music for over thirty years it was great to see a good crowd of young and old on hand for his first visit to Florida for many years. The show was fantastic and the songs from Pleasure Principal were exciting to hear again live.Numans voice is getting better with age and he belted out every song.My standout moment would be hearing Complex which is one of my personal favorites. The second half of the show was a mix of newer songs which kept the crowd rocking and begging for more.Hope he'll be back to play Orlando when he tours with the new cd.

Gary Numan's "The Pleasure Principle 2010" tour kicked off in Orlando at The Firestone bar. It's basically too small of a venue for a real band, but Gary made it work anyway.

The event started poorly but ended fantastically. Essentially everything about it was bad except for the actual main act show itself which was fantastic. The doors opened late. The opening band was so amateur and untalented that they seemed more like a group of high school kids playing "band" than an actual band. (Literally, no one applauded, danced and everyone just stared quietly waiting for them to finish). After they were finally done there was a good 45 minute wait for Numan to come out. Then he started and from that point on everything was gold. Numan puts on a very good live show and is very dynamic and is very much the showman when on stage. His light show was very impressive for such a small venue. Everything was clean, professional and flat out entertaining. The crowd responded to this wildly.

Glad I'm not the only one who's flown to the UK to see him that is.. I saw the set he's going to be playing on Apr 20 in London's Indigo2 back in Dec. He's not playing mainly new stuff this time around, but the entire Pleasure Principle album from 1980 which includes his massive US hit "Cars". Numan is simply amazing on stage. He has an energy that few artists posses. I've seen him countless times live over the last 30 years and each time I leave the gig with goose bumps. If you were lucky enough to score the VIP package I'll see you backstage!

Long time NUMAN fan and having seen him numerous times I am very pleased to once again say he puts on a spectacular show ..The DEC Paradise club show was no exception!!!!..His new material SHINES brilliantly along with his classics and Numan seems to be finding that perfect blend of electronica synths and aggressive industrial sounds on his recent release "Songs from a broken world " ...A few sound glitches with the front fill speakers But ever the trooper NUMAN carried on...Gary has been a HUGE influence on my own compositions and look forward to more music from this masterful musician . Amazing performance by Gary Numan! Him and the whole band absolutely killed it. The sound was a lot better at the Masquerade as well, as l was there about a month ago for Hum and couldn't hear the vocals at all. Apparently, it was an issue for awhile, but much improved just in time for Gary Numan! I took a star off though because the bathroom was out of toilet paper when we arrived. You might expect that at the end of the show, not before it even starts.

Opening act, Me Not You, began at 8:00. Me Not You were a pleasant surprise. Gary Numan began his set shortly after 9:00 and played a solid 90-minute set plus a second encore. His light show, and music, were awesome. If he had not had the amount of lights, it'd been an average performance, but with the addition of the lights it made for an epic performance. I also greatly enjoyed the fact that the show wasn't deafening. If it had been, Numan's merchandise table had earplugs for sale at $1.00/pair. The show ended by 11:00 and it looked as though the crowd had savored every moment.

When I received the e-mail on this show with the photo from Gary's latest album called Savage, I just had to check out sound clips. I had not bought a Gary Numan CD since White Noise Live in 1985 and he was almost forgotten among my large music library. I then ordered his latest two CD's called Splinter and Savage. I also got a VIP seat in the balcony for this show. I knew what awaited me, but this show even exceeded my expectations. He has reinvented himself yet again. This was an extremely aggressive sound and the three front men never stopped moving all over the stage. This is Gary, his guitarist, and his bass player. A drummer and keyboard player backed them up. The whole band was dressed in the outfits shown on Savage. His daughter Persia did not show up for backing vocals on My Name Is Ruin, but her voice was sampled into the keyboard. Gary mostly sang, played some keyboards, and ended the main set playing guitar before the two encores. I was exhausted after watching this two hour show full of energy and could not get to sleep for a while, which means that it was a stellar show. Don't miss them if you have a chance!!!! As for those only wanting to hear songs from The Pleasure Principle and Tubeway Army,, 6 or 7 songs from that era have been updated to match the more aggressive sound in this show. NO ONE was disappointed!

The Gary Numan show in Atlanta 12/11/17 was amazing. He is so full of energy at almost 60 and he performed his newer material as well as 7 classic hits, which were: Metal, Films, Are Friends Electric, Cars, Down In The Park, M.E. and I Die: You Die. He smiled at the audience several times and even stood still briefly for pictures from the audience. He had a wonderful opening band called Me Not You and they were awesome as well. This was my first time to see Gary Numan and I've been a dedicated fan since 1980. My first album bought was Telekon. I then went backwards to buy The Pleasure Principle and Replicas and then went forward with the release of Dance. His sound now is darker with experiemental sounds. His latest album, Savage is the best so far of his newer material and they keep getting better all the time. I hope to see Gary in concert again and if you still have the opportunity to catch him on his current tour, please do so. I promise that you will not be disappointed!

It was amazing to see electronic music icon Gary Numan perform. To say that both he and his band put on a heck of a show is a huge understatement. They rocked the house all the way through 3 encores, with a crazy light show, pulsating synths and guitars. I like that he added new treatments to his older material to meld well with his most recent album Savage that felt like a blend of NIN Pretty Hate Machine textured with Middle Eastern rhythms. Just FANTASTIC!

This was great show and a great song set. The band was on and I thought the wardrobe coordination was pretty cool. Was that paying homage to Kraftwerk whom I know he admired? The Paradise is an old favorite of mine as a venue, though I've not had the chance to see anyone there since VnV Nation and Ayria played in 2009. The energy, as always, was incredible, and the small, intimate feeling really connects you to the artists and the rest of the audience. The opening act (Me Not You) was a stellar find - this was apparently this first Boston show - but the main event with Gary Numan was breathtaking. There was a slight glitch on the soundboard during one of the songs, but everyone played it off like professionals, and it was the only fly in the ointment of an otherwise perfect night. Would definitely see another concert by any of the acts, and would definitely see other acts at the venue.

I've been listening to Gary Numan since late 70s, and I saw him first for The I, Assassin Tour at Perkins Palace in Pasadena. A beautiful album followed with a wonderful show. In the last few years I've seen him twice more, not including The last Saturday night show. He had included 2nd part of his prior shows with so much more of his music over the years, instead of playing mostly his latter work which is a harsher sound than his signature work. That's The only complain I have!

I'd always wanted to see Gary Numan live, but never had the opportunity until now. He didn't disappoint. The concert was just amazing from start to end - great energy, great songs - and they all seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage too, which was nice to see. The band was super-tight, and the guitarists Tim Muddiman and Steve Harris were incredible. Included were several classics from early Numan - Metal, Down in the Park, Films, and of course, Cars, with Are Friends Electric as an encore. His 11 year-old daughter, Persia, sang for "My Name is Ruin"- - amazing voice, and you could see the pride in her father's face. First time at the Teragram Ballroom too - this is a great venue, small and intimate, two full bars and the food was pretty good too. We go to a lot of concerts. This show was the BEST I've seen in a very long time. I enjoyed it so much, that I bought a ticket for the 2nd show in LA. Gary Numan just released his 22nd album. For a guy who retired from the limelight in 1981, after his mega-hit Cars became a radio staple, Gary is still cranking out the crowd pleasers. After his last album Splinter became a hit, it opened Gary up to a new generation of fans. His live shows are filled with 3-4 generations of people, all singing along and cheering Gary on. Numan s catalog Goes back to the mid-70s and somehow he s able to blend these eras together in a live show that has no slow spots. No Spinal Tap-like Jazz interludes to wander the halls during. From the first note to the last, he commands attention. Great job!

He performed his 1979 masterpiece "The Pleasure Principle" in its entirety and then delighted the audience with a lot of deeper tracks including some from the Tubeway Army days. The entire show start to finish was amazing. Ronan Remains, the first opening act Gary selected and invited to come on his tour from England. They had their debut CD and Merch for sale. They were well worth watching, and someone to keep your eyes on in the future. Big Black Delta was almost impromptu, he just made this amazing sound as he went along. I've seen Gary Numan several times in concert, three times at The Paradise Rock Club, met him a few times, too. He is a real professional, and has a natural radiating rock and roll sensuality that can't be beat. He really brings it in his performance. He played a range of older and new songs. His classic material is so PERFECTLY transformed into heavier, darker tunes, and the new stuff from Splinter is just as spooky. With each new album, his lyrics so artfully and unabashedly depict very personal feelings, many of which are very, very dark. His ability to express these feelings never ceases to amaze me. He openly addresses states of being that others would be too afraid to face. And it's all arranged within the most beautifully composed rock/goth/industrial/new wave that ever was. The whole band positively radiated energy. Many of the classic fans were there... The Hafling Machman, who, as expected, did his only joke at the front of the line, shouting "hey, there's Gary Numan!" To turn people's heads. He's been doing that since forever. And of course we saw Mech Hand Rob, nice fedora, man! The first opening act, however, was painful. I'd rather peel my skin off with a grapefruit spoon than have to hear that again. Composed of two people, the singer from "Roman Remains" did her best Bjork impression to the most puerile lyrics one could imagine. There was absolutely no originality whatsoever. She raised her arms, she danced about, but she just didn't have IT, that radiating energy. Everybody was falling asleep. I've been really forgiving with acts that are boring, that don't have IT, but what is NOT forgivable is utter copycat vocals.

Is this the same Gary Numan who had the hit song "Cars" back in the early 80s? Apparently, although the Gary Numan I saw at the Mayan Theatre on March 6th had the energy of a man 1/2 his age (or my age, in fact). He started his show at top speed and rarely let off the throttle. His live show, obviously, takes cues from his buddy Trent Reznor's stage antics, but never felt derivative. He blasted through his set list, made up of alternating new songs and classics, giving each song it's due energy. Can a man, who peaked 30 years ago, have a go at the spotlight again? If this show is any indication, the answer is YES.

I saw Gary at The Mayan in Los Angeles on March 6th. Roman Remains opened the night and they belted out five or six tunes... I liked them. Big Black Whatever wasn't on my favorite list but the younger crowd seemed to really like them. Not my cup of tea but they got the crowd into their set so my hat was off to them. Gary came on stage and they cranked up the volume. Small venue, packed house, GREAT sound system! Gary rocked the house. He got the entire Splinter set in with a few classics thrown about the night. I waited five years to get to see this show (since I gave up my tix back then to work three nights of OT ~ and kicked myself this long afterwards). The wait was worthwhile. It was the performance I knew it was going to be. Fanfrikkingtastic!

Gary Numan 55 played to a small intimate show of about 500 people in Brooklyn NY. We have followed Gary since the late 70's when we lived in the UK and this is the third time we have seen him. To think that in his early years he was a genuine Mega Star, to see him so close and personal was incredible....and $35 a ticket! The set was a perfect mix of his new darker stuff and old classics (I was actually in tears with Down in the Park). The fact that we stayed at the Waldorf and had a Limo to the Gig and back, made for a perfect two days. $2,000 later but who cares, I've felt like a rock star for the last two days....just coming down to earth now :-)

I've followed Gary Numan for 34 years. Seen over 30 shows of his - and this performance was his best yet. If your even curious about his live performances - next time he's in your town make the effort and go see a true veteran. Mind blowing and exhilarating - don't let yourself down!

A fine blend of new and old songs (mostly new), Numan took the stage with his disciplined band and never let up, even during the slower numbers. Old classics were given a heavier-edge and the crowd response was fantastic. All around great show.

For being the king of industrial music(my opinion) he was fantastic!! At his age he had so much energy, and a positive vibe that I got lost in the music. I am shocked at how cheap the tickets were for such a awesome show. The opening band was decent, but Gary (of course) is why I was there, and he rocked out for over two and half hours. The audience was pleasant and fed off his energy. Robin Finck was his special guest!!!!

This was the first time Gary Numan had been back to ATL in a long time, considering his last tour date was cancelled in 2010. I was on the way to the show when I found out it had been cancelled. However I believe this performance more than made up for missing him last time, because it was the BEST show I have ever been to see! I got to the venue early and could hear him playing a private show for some VIP members (or rehearsing, not quite sure). It made the hour and a half wait bearable until the doors opened. The opening act was Board of Whores. I had never heard of the group before so I had no idea what to expect. It was two gentleman: a lead singer and a guitarist with the assistance of a macbook for drum machines and other sounds. Their sound was reminiscent of many artists, but their instrumentation levels were a bit too loud for the vocals and it was difficult to hear him singing. Gary Numan's time started with Resurrection from his album Dead Sun Rising. From there time became distorted and all that mattered was the music. I was lucky enough to be in front of Gary for the entire show. He still puts on a performance at his age with an energy that shames other newer and younger artists. This man has experience and style. His live vocals and the band are all on par with studio mastered sound. Robin Finck made an appearance and played guitars for a number of tracks. I was hoping for Trent Reznor of NIN to show, but I suppose he saved that for the actual paired tour dates following the show in ATL. The setlist covered mostly music from Dead Son Rising and Splinter, but he played a few fan favorites such as: Films, I Die, You Die, Cars, Down In The Park, Metal, Are Friends Electric?, and A Prayer for the Unborn. The setlist on stage didn't list Cars, which surprised everyone. It was fantastic! I can't wait to see Gary Numan again for his next tour.

I have been waiting for nearly half of my life (15 years or more) to see Gary Numan live. He has played in the area a few times, but I found out about the concerts too late. I purchased my ticket for this show a few months ago to be sure I wouldn't miss it. I'm so glad I did. This was the best concert I have ever attended, and the best money I have ever spent. Gary was absolutely amazing onstage. During the moments he wasn't singing or enthralled in something, he was smiling. When you can see how much someone loves what they are doing, it makes the show even more awesome to see. I plan on going to see him live again and again whenever possible.

Despite a dose of laryngitis, Gary Numan glided through the classic "Pleasure Principle" album (with the audience helping out on vocals), threw in some of the great old instrumentals, and finished off with some newer stuff like from "Pure", a new one called "The Fall" or something, and "I Die You Die" etc. Then again, I'd love it even if he f*rted through a tuba. And the bass player was gorgeous. I had a moment of trouble in the crowd with a pissed-off couple, but it was worth every penny. Sound is always good in the Paradise - and yes there were a few bum notes and squeaks from Gary's strained vocals. Club staff was friendly! Bathroom was clean! And $5 Guinness at the Lounge next door? Sweet. I don't want to wait another 5 years for his return... Only neg was overpriced Numan merch and lack of choice for women. Opening act Rasputina did a great cello cover of the Smiths' "How Soon is Now".

Let's just say this is the only artist I've ever flown over 5,000 miles to see live in the UK... That alone speaks volumes for his amazing performances. I've been a Gary Numan fan for about 3 years and was engulfed by over 30 years of music. He is a true innovator and it's no wonder artists like NIN and Manson cite him as a huge influence. Most of the USA sadly only remembers him for 'Cars,' but his new material is his best work, in my opinion. Don't miss him when he returns to the US this year! He has been doing this for 30 years and has more energy than the average 20 year old!

Fabulous concert -- by turns edgy and vulnerable, hard driving and lyrical. Gary is a superb performer as one can see just by listening to his many live albums and watching his concert videos. I love his music, his moves, his band. Amazing and genius!!! Saw him twice on this tour and if I had the opportunity, I would go again.

Last Tuesday's show was outstanding to say the least. Gary and band started at 9:10 and ended at 11:10, doing close to 20 songs. Every song, even the songs I didn't know,(as they did about 10 new ones that I have yet to hear) were over the top. The "oldies" such as Metal, Films and Down In the Park sounded FRESH; as if they were not 30 year old tunes. It's hard to believe that THAT is how long Gary Numan has been at it but with his band the enthusiasm of the performances gave each song a Life of their own. The venue was perfect for a Numan concert. I saw him twice at Irving Plaza,( really good ), and the last one at Best Buy Theater, but the Music Hall of Williamsberg was an outstanding setting. It was packed-very warm too. But as soon as the band entered the stage and went into the new song - I Am Dust - the Transformation began. We all were a part of Nuworld. Gary himself got so into each and every song with his bobbing and jumping around - he was like a Taskmaster; each of the songs - his creation. I must admit that I enjoyed the more familiar tunes like Films and Metal - but the new material was just as good and the show picked up steam as it went along. I particularly enjoyed Pure, a not so old tune and couldn't help singing along to it on the choruses. I was amazed at the crowd reaction. Like me, they felt the anticipation of the event. Numan does not tour too often and he is not a "mainstream" artist. He does not write and record for radio-play. He records music that HE wishes to hear himself and has gotten "darker" over the years. But the energy of the new songs is so dynamic; Love Hurt Bleed - a new one - is one of his best, and really gets to you. I was tottaly impressed. Then came encore time. He did Cars and Are Friends Electric and closed with a newer, slower My Last Day. But he had the audiance in the palm of his hand by then - and the participation parts in "Friends" was there - I love to sing the "oh-oh's" along with him, as did the rest of us. It was a show I was glad to have seen, and will not forget any time soon; the best Numan Show of the four I've seen and am looking forward to his next go around. Bravo Gary Numan ! A True Artist in every sence; You play for the Love of the Music - and it shows !

i think it's pathetic someone who was so stylistically fashion forward and musically ahead of his time 20 years ago is now a cliche trying to be Trent Reznor.. the music was overly loud- like uncomfortably loud (and i like Motorhead btw.. this was just distorted loud where the floor and walls were shaking)..i'm not 100 percent certain they were actually playing instruments (it was dark and that was a big question mark).. and the "new" (yawn) industrial material is just testosterone rock without content or originality. all the musicians looks like guys that were picked for looking like badasses rather than musicians. if you like NIN - this is a sad middle aged inspired NIN without the catchy lyrics or music. just WAY behind the times.. seems like Numan just recently discovered NIN and Ministry.. but can't top it. i left early.

My husband and I traveled from Minneapolis to see Numan in Washington D.C. My husband has been a long time Numan fan and this was my 7th Numan concert. This concert was absolutely brilliant! Gary was in great form and the setlist was amazing! He did a great job alternating between songs from the Splinter album and songs from his back catalog. This concert was even better than the two concerts we went to in the U.K. last year. We loved every moment of it. I would highly recommend seeing him if you can. The Black Cat venue was also a good venue. It was laid out well. It did not feel crowded, was cooled well, and the staff we interacted with were fabulous.

Both my wife and I were glad we went to this concert!!! I have been to hundreds of concerts and for such a small venue, the lighting that Gary had was most impressive! Certainly not as good lighting as a big show like Pink Floyd, but very, very good lighting for a small venue! While listening to some of his songs, it reminded me a lot of the music of the Nine Inch Nails. My wife was complaining of having to go to this concert because she is not into that type of music, but she admitted to me after the show was over that she was glad she decided to go. If anyone out there is trying to decide to go or not go to this show, my advice is to GO!

We decided to see NIN and Gary on subsequent nights so we could get a full set from Gary and were definitely not disappointed. It is one of the great mysteries why Gary is still playing these small, intimate venues while Trent is filling places like Phillips Arena. Folks, HE ISN"T JUST THE CARS GUY! For the past 20 years, his music has been evolving towards an ever more industrial sound that fits better with the darkness and alienation his lyrics have always had. It is a rare and wonderful treat that it is so easy to be up close. On second thought, yea it's just the guy that plays Cars, ya'll go somewhere else...

Great show, but playing a few more from "Replicas" and "Pleasure Principle" would have been nice. I understand the desire to play the new songs from "Splinter," but more balance would have made this outstanding. No offense, but the opening act was weak.

I don't want to talk about the opening act, Motor and the fact that I had to wait 135 minutes to actually see the act I went to see. But the wait was worth. I was a huge Numan fan back in the first 2 years of high school. I knew Pleasure Principle by heart. I've never seen him live, so I had absolutely the greatest anticipation. He didn't disappoint. I played all the air instruments there are during the first half of the concert while they were playing Pleasure. I know every note and beat on that album and every word, so I had the most amazing time. They sounded better live than on the album (I immediately listened to the album after the concert in the car.) It was the best time travel I've ever had in my life. he transported me back to 1979-1980. I was screaming from joy! I was amazed how good and tight the band was and how Numan's voice was still awesome. OMG! I had the greatest time!!

Some of my more ignorant 'friends' joked that Gary Numan would just play Cars for an hour and a half. In fact, he has more than 20 studio albums, so he can fill a concert playlist very comfortably, thankyouverymuch. I've loved Gary Numan's music since the early '80s, and even enjoyed a few tracks from Machine + Soul (widely regarded by Numan and his fans as the lowest point in his career). I'm happy to report that his gothy "comeback" albums--Sacrifice, Exile, Pure, Jagged, Hybrid, and his forthcoming one--are mind-blowingly excellent, and the songs he performed from those albums that night at the El Rey rocked the house and blew the audience away. The main attraction was The Pleasure Principle (aka "that album Cars was on"), performed in its entirety. Although The Pleasure Principle was very early, pioneering synthpop, the songs do not sound dated; perhaps because the music never sounded like a product of its time when it came out, despite Cars being a huge hit. Numan has honed his stage act and persona to perfection. I remember when he did little more than look strange and walk back and forth across the stage. Now he is savage and intense; thrashing, headbanging, and striking rock hero poses with the energy of a man half his age. His clothes and makeup were totally appropriate (my girlfriend was screaming for him like he was some kind of goth Elvis), and his band looked and sounded fantastic. Early in his career, to cover his lack of stage presence (and stage fright), Numan used to indulge in massive, blinding, lighted stage sets. The lighting at the El Rey was relatively sparse by comparison, but absolutely perfect: Every color enhanced the mood of the songs, every move of the lights was timed for maximum dramatic effect. The audience went apeshit--as well they should have--when he took to the stage, and after every song. At the end, Numan appeared pleased with the audience's reaction. As a longtime fan, I was thrilled to see one of my heroes age so well, and actually IMPROVE as an artist and a performer. There is NO-ONE else out there like Gary Numan, so I savor everything he does, and I am seldom disappointed (well, "seldom VERY disappointed").

This is the sixth time I've seen Gary - Touring Principle & Teletour in 1980 and subsequent tours in the 80's and 2000's. Fans skeptical of being a one-hit wonder should not let that stop them from seeing the musician who popularized Robot Rock and gave Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and many others their wings. He mixed up the track list of The Pleasure Principle from its original presentation which made it nice. Once they got the mix right, the 4 synthesizers made for a lush sound.
