I've been to plenty of multi-artist shows, but one in which so many all sat in together, joining their voices and instruments so sweetly -- nope, never. Tuesday's fund- and aware-raising concert for/of the refugees of Lampedusa at Town Hall was far from your routine guitar pull. Patty Griffin was absent, but her ex, Robert Plant (yes -- THE Robert Plant) sat in with the group. So many highlights, both singular and in tandem. At times some of the artists needed lyrics sheets, while other times they slid right in. I started in the front row of the loge, sneakers off, Makers Mark in hand .... then took both in hand, walked downstairs and asked the usher if I could have the open orchestra aisle seat in the fourth row. "Sure," he said, opening the door. "Have fun." Boy, did I. Steve Earle gifted us with a lovely version of "Goodbye," while Buddy Miller -- besides his own tunes (the racous "Gasoline & Matches" among them) -- ripped through on the leads for Steve's "Copperhead Road." Steve also (predictably) did "City of Immigrants." EmmyLou owned the room with "Sweet Old World." She also did a sweet read of the Everly's "Love Hurts" with Buddy. Plant surprised with a soft, supple version of Elvis Presley's "Don't." The Cali duo The Milk Carton Kids stole the show, with a floating version of EmmyLou's "Michelangelo" and a couple of terrific originals -- including "Charlie" -- as well as lots of jokes. They even took a poke at the Jesuits, whose Refugees Service's Global Education Initative is benefitting from the proceeds of the brief tour to help the refugees of the Italian island in the Mediterranean that has become a way station of sort for the displaced -- and has cost countless thousands their lives in trying to make it there. Multi-instrumentalist David Pulkingham held it all together. Nancy & Beth (Megan Mullally & Stephanie Hunt) had a fun cameo. Then there was the lovely Joan Baez .... What a joy to see and hear her (she sounds great). Yes, a Dylan song wouldn't have hurt, but Plant did Townes's "Nothin'," so I called it even. The finale was perfect: First came Woody's heart-breaking "Deportee" -- then, for the close, Steve's brilliant "Pilgrim." We re all pilgrims, he said. We re all just trying to get home. Everybody deserves a home."

I went primarily to see Shawn Colvin and was dissapointed that she did not play more of her main hits. The other performers were pretty good but nothing exceptional. While I would not go to see it again and would not recommend it to others, it was an ejoyable few hours. The venue (Oaks Park) was totally unprepared when it came to beer and wine sales. I spent nearly half an hour in line for a beer. Other than the beer line, Oaks Park was pretty good.

I'm a huge Patty Griffin fan, and I really like Emmy Lou. I had hoped for more songs performed together. Instead, the four performers took turns, each more or less performing separately. They started on time and played for only 2 hours. The venue was great except for one major issue: no food or beverage was allowed inside. This was a huge surprise and disappointment for many people who'd packed picnics for the show in a public park.

The evening was beautiful the venue and staff were perfect. The three girls and their buddy were wonderful! I would get so lost in their music and banter that I would forget there were probably over 3000 people there. It felt like we were just sitting in a park while they picked and sang. I hope they come back and that Oaks Park books more acts like them.

This was my first time hearing any of these musicians live, and it was a show I will not forget! As a musician myself I was blown away by the talent and energy. My favorites were Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller, but Shawn Colvin and Emmylou were great as well. The venue was intimate, relaxed and the weather was perfect. Please bring these guys back soon!

The show was wonderful. New love for Patti's voice. The evening was beautiful so close to the river. Really love the venue. I am familiar with the outdoor event regulations in Portland, but so many people were not. There was no clear information online about food, water and cameras. There was a lot of food dumped in the trash at the gate. What a waste. Only sealed by the factory water bottles allowed. Food at the event was pizza, burgers and burritos. The bathrooms were nice and adequate. The alcohol lines were so long (4-6 songs worth) that it wasn't really worth the wait. This was an older age group. Also, should have someone directing cars out of the parking lot. It was a cluster of vehicles cramming thru the gate. I loved the show and would love to see more shows at Oaks Park.

When purchased this ticket I didn't know much about the event... I was going because I knew Patty Griffin was playing, and because of the promotional photo Emmylou Harris would be there too, who I love. It was a treat to arrive and discover Sean Colvin and Buddy Miller were along for the ride as well. It was wonderful... four amazing artists taking turns singing their songs, backing oneanother up, collaborating and improvising... SO GREAT! The song selection was fabulous... amazing artistry and talent... good sound system (not too loud)... the weather was perfect. Drawback: Oakspark doesn't allow you to bring your own food or drink. BOO!!! People were having to throw stuff away right and left... then you got inside and they charged you two dollars for water. I hope those artists don't choose that venue again, only for that reason. Otherwise it's a great place... right on the water. How do we vote to change that rule? Ha.

I wasn't quite sure what the format for this was going to be but I was so pleased with the colaborative, acoustic nature of this show. All of these artists were right on in a very laid back sort of way. Buddy and Patty's voices blended so well together it was amazing. Emmy Lou - good as always, and I always melt when Shawn sings and last night was no exception. The venue was well organized, though the sound could have been better, that's why I didn't give it 5 stars. That didn't take away much from this "well oiled machine" though. Memorable evening.

Many pretty (but dark) songs were sung. The numbers done in trio were wonderful. Each person is very, very talented. However, there was no "fire" or enthusiasm at all in this concert. When a performer says, by way of apolopy, that "this has been a long tour" it leaves the audience with the feeling that they would be glad to not be there and have it be over. And while that may be ture, we shouldn't be left with that feeling.

It was great to see FOUR accomplished musical artists at the same time. Truly worth the money. Fortunately, the weather was great, the artists attract a very nice crowd and we were able to see well. I wish the parking were better at Oaks Park. It takes a very long time to get out of there after a concert. Also, the sound operations takes up a good section of the seating, so not all folks could see very well.

This concert highlighted some of the best performers we have. Each one has an amazing voice and wonderful guitar style. I thought Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin had some incredible moments - Patty was in peak form and stole the show with her last couple of numbers, including the encore ("Mary"). I would have been happy to hear more from Buddy Miller, too - he is an underrated singer. Shawn Colvin and Emmylou Harris were enjoyable as well. The sound and setting were great. However, the lines for beer and food were way too long, as was the line to get in. Those are simple fixes - have more than two beer taps! At least on that count the organizers get a thumbs down. If you are paying $40 for a concert you should not have to stand in line for 20 minutes to buy a beer!!!

The concert format was very intimate. Each of the four singers took a turn going around the circle in order. This went on for two hours from 7 pm to 9 pm on a glorious summer night. The format was very informal. The musicians obviously have a great rapport with each other, enjoying friendly and usually humorous banter back and forth between songs. They had a huge array of beautiful stringed instruments, mostly accoustic guitars amplified with pickup. Buddy Miller played some electric guitars and one very unique instrument they called a mando-guitar, or something, that had a heavenly higher pitched string sound, a greatly appreciated addition. He changed the tuning to open tunings a few times, and added a fuller, more rounded out sound, playing on nearly every song. The others contributed percussion with small drums, shakers and tambourine, as well as contributing harmonies on each others' songs. The sound was great quality, plenty loud without blasting your ear drums. Each and every one of them shined in their own right, to the point that you really couldn't say who was the stand out...they all were.

This was kind of a strange concert. The first piece wasn't very well rehearsed (Patty Griffin didn't know the words) and a little off key (maybe they just couldn't hear each other?), and the next few pieces just weren't very tight. Obviously, these four are all amazing performers, but I have seen them be AMAZING before, and last night just wasn't as impressive. What was up with Patty playing that drum thing? She was concentrating really hard, like the kids in the drum circles at my college did after they spent hours toking. That said, "Heavenly Day" was thrilling. She has an amazing voice. The witty banter between songs was awkward. Buddy Miller was my favorite, if only because he looked like he had practiced.

My friends and I went to this concert last night, and I was disappointed. I am a HUGE Patty Griffin fan, and Shawn Colvin, too. I know a little Emmylou and no Buddy Miller, but I didn't see this as a problem. With four stars on the stage, they had enough material for a 6-hour concert or more. This concert lasted not even 2. Now, I don't expect 6 hours, but under two is too little for each artist, singing from their past albums, to even get the blood going. Plus, EVERYONE sat. The moment I got there, I wanted to stand, dance a little, move around, but it was so rigid. This was in Portland at an outside venue. People should have been allowed to get up and dance; feel the music.

Emmylou was mournful, but off-the-wall stage patter was intriguing. Shawn Colvin likes to be a bad-ass, but her music is doleful and poignant. Patti Griffith is the Goddess, my friends had never seen her and said "she's instansly likeable)

The main draw of this concert for me was Emmylou - I grew up singing along with her and just love her music. However, it was Patty (I'm also a fan, have all her music) whose voice just stood out as absolutely awesome! The venue was gorgeous. I wasn't happy about not being able to hear what they were saying when they talked - I could hear the music fine but not the spoken word. I wish there had been more 4-part harmonies, less slow solos. While solos showcase the voices, they made me sleepy.

Emmylou and band were fine and tight as usual, but the sound was very poor (Emmylou s vocals were muddy the entire night, the levels of instruments were off as well). I m not sure if that is a function of the event space or the fact that it was only the second show in the tour.

I recommend this show with reservations. Emmylou Harris is one of our all-time favorite artists. We love her harmonizing, duets and group music. But, I must say we were disappointed with the show at Hoyt Sherman Place this past Saturday, September 30. I think it was the sound setup more than anything. The sound tech must have thought they were playing Wells Fargo Arena as it was very (too) loud for the small venue. Emmylou s voice was almost biting and very piercing on our ears. As proof of my claim, the best sounding song was the encore sung in a capella using a single mic. We have enjoyed many shows at HSP and will continue to do so, but this particular show was disappointing.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Hoyt Sherman before for other events, but this experience was terrible. We sat in the front, center of the balcony and the sound quality was terrible. I could not understand the words Emmylou was singing or saying at the beginning of the concert. And, the mix was really uneven. The EQ eventually got better, but I still had to struggle to understand..it was definitely not what I had hoped for from a live experience. Overall, the sound quality was like walking a building with a concert and the doors happened to be open.

Sadly, though I had a terrific seat (I don't think there is a bad seat at Hoyt-Sherman), the person controlling the sound, or maybe it was the speakers themselves . . . I'm not a sound technician so can't pinpoint the problem. However, the sound delivery was bad from beginning to end. The best part of the concert was the acapello song Emmylou sang for an encore. The mic was just fine, and the song was magical. The rest of the concert was a BIG disappointment. My sister sat in another section as we purchased our seats late and couldn't get them next to each other. She experienced the same problems with the sound. I've been to Hoyt-Sherman many times with wonderful experiences so this was an isolated case.

The show was wonderful. I have loved her for 40 years, and seeing her at the Ryman was a thrill. The musicianship was phenomenal, we couldn't stop clapping, stomping and cheering. I found it rather odd that, when we purchased the tickets, we weren't informed that the event was being recorded for airing on PBS. I feel that really changed the pace of the show. We were on the ground floor, close to the stage, and the cameras were fairly intrusive. 4 or 5 songs played early in the set had to be performed again at the end to get the desired footage or sound. Fortunately, I'd listen to this band play the same song over as many times as they needed to! All in all, I'm glad I didn't miss this one.

I really enjoyed the "in the round" performance of all the amazing singer/songwriters. I felt, I was amongst singer/songwriter royalty. Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, Joan Baez, and Buddy Miller all in one place performing, was something spectacular. It was an honor to be a fan in the audience, listening to them perform. The Milk Carton Kids are beautifully talented, young singer/songwriters, whom I just heard about recently. They were a part of some of the songs on Chely Wright's new album, I Am The Rain. I would definitely see them perform again, when they come back to the NYC area.

Emmy Lou and the Glory band were wonderful. They were generous with their time and responsive to the audience. It was fun to see an accordion as part of the keyboard component of the concert. I was expecting to hear excellent music but they were better than I anticipated. Emmylous voice brought me to tears, so beautiful. I didn't want the concert to end. I hope to be able to enjoy her music live again.

I enjoyed everything about the show, Richard Thompson was great & Emmy & Rodney work so well together. I have been an avid Emmy fan for 38 years & I truly enjoyed this concert as much as any one I have gone to before.

For years, I have been wanting to see Emmy Lou Harris live in concert. What a triple treat when I found out that Richard Thompson was the opening act, and Rodney Crowell would be singing along with ELH! I treated myself to a rather expensive ticket, but it was worth every penny just to hear Emmy Lou sing "Leaving Louisiana". Emmy Lou's band was incredibly talented. I am always in awe of great musicians and vocalists. The drinks inside the Paramount are pricey, and there are no cup holders for the seats. Other than that, the staff was warm and welcoming, and the venue was just the right size for me.

When you say Emmylou Harris you are saying the absolute country/folk/rock pinnacle performer, singer/songwriter, guitar player, band leader. Rodney Crowell...Fantastic! The new band really lives up to the standards and deserve the appellation as the "new" Hot Band. Richard Thompson superb! BUT....I expect more than a small cramped and old and crappy hard folding chair when I pay over $200.00 per seat, even if it was front row and came in the VIP gold package and I got to meet Emmylou. What's next, an un-padded metal chair? You won't see me at the Paramount even if they resurrect Elvis and Jerry Garcia!

Great musicians having fun playing, just a fine show, one of the best I've ever seen. Emmylou Harris' great voice and Rodney Crowell's songs and singing and Richard Thompson's guitar playing - outstanding.

This concert was excellent. it was definitely a great value, too, as the performers played and sang for about 3 hours, total. Only negative is that the music for Emmylou and Rodney was a bit too loud, sometimes tending to drown out the voices. We did not know Richard Thompson, but what a pleasant surprise!. Fantastic guitar player, excellent vocals, and we loved his drummer and guitar partner as well. Boston's Orpheum Theater needs renovation badly- run down old carpets and too-small seats, poor HVAC. We had to wear our coats throughout the show. This would be a beautiful old place with some work and investment.

Emmylou & Rodney played old favorites, as well as songs from their new CD. Both of them still have the vocals and musical abilities to perform like they did in the 70s & 80s. No concert has ever been better!!! Love them both. And the band was great!!!

We love Steve Martin, and had been looking forward to this concert for quite a while. However, very shortly after they started, a loud bass hum (feedback) started, and continued through the whole concert, essentially masking much of the music. The was very disappointing. I could have stayed home and heard better sound with youtube videos. I give steve's performance a 5, but the venue gets a 1-. They need a new sound man, period.

As a friend said, "it's as if an angel was sent to walk among us." There's not much more to say about Emmylou, other than I wish I could turn back time to live it all over again. The mandolin player, in particular, was outstanding. It was a perfect evening for an outdoor concert.

I have been a Emmylou fan for years and always wanted to see her in person. She did not dissapoint. She is so talented and comes across as such a nice person with a fun sense of humor. She made me feel like I could be her friend. Emmylou made a statment in passing that I will never forget. It was so uplifting to me because I am not enjoying getting older. She said, "those of us that are lucky enough to live to be old". Wow! What a positive way to look at life. That little statement changed my outlook.

The woman with the voice of an angel and looks to match... I have been going to EmmyLou Harris concerts since the '70's and it never gets old for me. During this intimate and low-key concert she sang entirely new material from the record that's just coming out now -- none of the old favorites. Her encore was a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" which was quite touching. She had a very small band this time -- two multiinstrumentalists who were pretty amazing - one played drums and a synth simultaneously, while the other played lead guitar and generated the bass line with his feet and a Moog.

I am not a country music fan, but off the charts talent transcends genre. My only complaint is that I wished she played all night.

This was a substantial re-creation of the Wrecking Ball album and tour, with Brian Blade on Drums, who put this evening together, and Daniel Lanois playing electric guitar and singing. The Bassist, from the Brian Blade Fellowship band and the steel pedal were so incredible too. The music was astounding all the way through, and I wish there was a bootleg so I could listen to it again and again. Highlights included some covers: Jimi Hendrix' May this be love, followed by Dylan's Every Grain of sand. Lanois' The Maker, and Neil Young's Wrecking Ball. Lanois played a solo song that was a folk song I never caught the name of, but he btought real intensity to it. Emmylou herself is always perfect and performs so much that she is the ultimate professional, but you could tell a few songs in that she and everyone else were understanding that this was really an unusually excellent band (this was a one night deal), and she just really stepped it up, which is saying a lot, a heck of a lot. Please, Brian and Emmylou and Daniel, please do this again!!

Really, there are no words that can convey the magnitude of the show's lineup last night and all of the class and heart they brought to that sacred room with their songs. It was nothing short of amazing. I get chills thinking about it. Such a great cause and every artist shined a spotlight on why we all should wake-up and pay attention to what is happening in Appalachia. MUSIC CAN SAVE MOUNTAINS!!

Last time I saw Emmylou she had black hair. That was quite a few years ago. Just after the release of Roses in the Snow. Last night she was just as good if not better than back then. The first two songs were good but lacked a certain spark. While having some technical difficulties with a guitar, she resorted to telling a couple so-so jokes to which we all laughed. She seemed to really warm up to the audiance at that point and the rest of the concert was magical, The hights for me was a song by Victoria Williams, the song she wrote to her father. Both of which caused tears to flow down my face and Every Grain of Sand by Bob Dylan. Emmylou always brings tears to my eyes with the beauty and sadness she expresses in her voice.

Excellent show by an excellent artist. She played for nearly 2 hours non stop, old favorites, newer songs, great mix. Saw her in 1984 and again in 1986 in Ohio. She's been one of my favorites since I was a kid. So when I saw she was performing in Chattanooga, it was well worth the drive for me. Theater was beautiful, the band was awesome, as her bands usually are. Sound guy needs to find a new career. I thought at the beginning he'd adjust the levels as the show went on, but he didn't. I took my husband who'd never seen Emmylou perform before, and sadly, without knowing the songs, he couldn't really understand a lot of the words. NOT Emmylou's fault. Entirely the result of a bad sound guy.

The show was very good but Emmylou's mic was way to hot. Couldn't understand a word she sang because she was so loud. Her bands mics were fine and at comfortable level. I left with a headache. Thanks sound man

My expectations of this show were much different than the actual show. The "Life and Songs" title lead me to expect a different presentation of Emmylou's songs and certainly to hope for some anecdotes to accompany the admittedly fantastic music. A disembodied voice announcing each performer was odd and did not fit the theme of a tribute or a life/songs in review. That said, the lineup was without equal and the music was just splendid! Only sour note, and it's a biggie, was the venue...historic but not upgraded at all and quite uncomfortable and scary at times.

the audience was clearly there to fund a taping session. from section J, much of the background music was TOO loud, and overshadowed the featured artist. Audience members were using their smart phones to not just record the event, but exchange emails, look up fact-info on artists, and bother the folks behind them. No ushers were anywhere in sight to stop this rude activity, and NO announcement was made to discourage it with a warning of immediate eviction from the venue. There was nominal effort made to introduce the artists, and no fill-in MC person was on stage. This is standard fare, often used to fill-in the downtime between musicians while the stage hands were changing cables/connections. Could have clearly been done much better, considering the obvious resources available, and level of talent that came from ALL over the country to not only perform, but view this epic event.

This was a tribute concert more than a musical concert. The roughly 30 musicians are all individually talented and they demonstrated those talents by performing songs that Emmy Lou wrote or had performed. This unified and embodied the tribute, but quite frankly it would have been a much better musical concert if each had played things from their own repertoire. The tribute would have been their presence. Overall, I thought the review in the Washington Post hit the nail on the head relative to the quality of the individual performances as well as the overall concert. I am glad that I went but it was not as wonderful as anticipated.

This was the best concert ever for both my wife and I. Everyone was excellent and it lasted close to 4 hours. One of the new groups The Milk Carton Kids did a rendition of Michelangelo that was reminiscent of the early Simon and Garfunkel harmonies... Absolutely Incredible - Can't wait for the DVD!!!
