Toad the Wet Sprocket

TOAD THE WET SPROCKET IN CONCERT: In 2013beloved alt-rockers Toad the Wet Sprocket released their first album of new material in more than 15 years, and proved they've lost none of their energy or melodic sense with a series of electrifying shows. Frontman Glen Phillips and his bandmates can nail a harmony with the best of them, and they're musicianship really shines on cuts from the new album like "The Moment". While the band is excited about the new release, fans of their earlier work have nothing to worry about -- Toad the Wet Sprocket's sets consistently top the two hour mark, and their upcoming dates with Counting Crows will feature all their classic hits including "All I Want" and "Good Intentions". BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Toad the Wet Sprocket was formed in 1986 by a group of high school friends in Santa Barbara, CA.

The band was energetic and just awesome live. You could tell that the crowd in Ojai was filled with friends/family of the band and that was truly the atmosphere at this small venue. New music they played was as good, maybe better, than the old stuff we were so nostalgic to hear! :) We will very certainly be keeping an eye out for any concerts they do locally in the future. Renewed super fans here!

You can't go wrong with Toad. Easy listening, feel good band. If you like their music, the live band sounds just like the record. The Libbey Bowl is small, personal, and in a spectacular location. The sound was also very good! I highly recommend both TTWS and the Libbey Bowl.

It was a good show for a Toad fan and I am a huge Toad the Wet Sprocket fan. I have seen them many times in the 90's and on various reunion tours as well as seeing Glen Phillips solo. The show was good. The sound was off, but I put most of the blame the venue. Toad was Toad, they sang their songs, talked to the crowd, and did the obscure stuff for real fans- as usual. For the first time in my life and seeing this band numerous times in their hay day and now I got to hear- Good Intentions! Even if Glen had to restart it because he forgot the words. That was the only song I needed need to hear to have my live Toad the Wet Sprocket song collection complete. They did not end with I Will Not Take These Things For Granted- which was a a bummer and why I didn't give 5 out of 5 stars. If you are a Toad fan then the show was excellent- catch them anytime on tour, if you are not fond of Toad then the show would be a bore. (I was told that directly from my boyfriend who is not a Toad fan)

Toad the Wet Sprocket rolled into Atlanta and lit up the Variety Playhouse on the very first song when the opening rift of Something's Always Wrong hit the crowd. Having seats in the center section on the floor I was amazed that no one returned to sitting for the entire show. They were that good and captivating as a group and entertainers. Glen Phillips and the entire group seemed genuinely appreciative of the energy and drive that came from the crowd that night - perhaps not realizing they themselves provided the fuel that energized the entire venue. Playing mostly the standards we all know - with special attention to Dulcinea - they were tight for every song and pulled the crowd in as if on queue. They are putting on a great show this summer and it is worth checking out!

Toad put on an amazing show. I went to the concert thinking of all of the songs that I was hoping they would play. They managed to play every song on that list, and a couple of old favorites that I hadn't even thought about. Not only did they pick the best of their music, but they engaged the crowd well, which made for an overall great performance.

Wasn't thrilled with the concert- the venue was terrific, but I swear the lead singer was either drunk or stoned. He stumbled over words and they didn't play anything from their old stuff- No Nancy, and nothing from Fear. Had such potential to be a great event in such an intimate setting- disappointing.

When my hubby had to go out of town on business, we turned this into Girls Night Out and had a blast! Toad the Wet Sprocket has quite a following, as we sat with several people who have been following them for quite some time - the man sitting next to me had driven from Memphis, TN, and this was his 28th time to see them. There was a woman at our table who said she was sleeping in her car following them around! They were very good and brought back lots of memories from our youth - Glen apparently plays his concerts barefoot! The only negative moment was when he made some remarks about his personal politics and I feel he should not use his performance to do so - whatever his political feelings, the audience did not pay to hear that, the audience paid to hear your music. If you want to talk about those things, do it in your meet and greets or after the concert with those who care what you think.

I have seen Toad several times...I really enjoyed the show, the sound was outstanding as was the setlist. I had forgotten that the Coil album was 20 years old (time flies), so much of the setlist focused on that album which was fine with me. I didn't know that Randy would be out with an injury, but was very happy the band addressed that immediately after the first song! Get well soon and get back soon! The drummer from Beta Play did a great job filling in on drums! Hope to see Toad again in 2018!

Sorry to say I did not think it was very good. The sound was horrible. Glen's voice is great, but you could barely hear it. Bad mixing job? Instruments is really all we could hear. Note that opening act Rusted Root did not seem to have any sound problems, although I do not know that band, so can't say what they normally sound like. Also, Toad's show was ultra short. I understand 25 years of "Fear" was celebrated, and that those songs were on the menu, but there are so many more beautiful songs they could have included. Their set was just over an hour plus a 15 minute encore. Simply not enough.

I have seen Toad several times, the last time in Flagstaff, Arizona, quite by accident and very last-minute., in an old theater. Great show there. I was excited to see them locally. I have no complaints about the band but this is my first time at the Rose Center. I have to conclude that the metal and steel and open areas and speakers chosen did not suit the sound of Glen Phillips and this band. This was disappointing. We had a very hard time understanding any vocal as bass and drums pretty much dominated any acoustic guitar, voice, or keyboards. If you knew a song well you could imagine what was being said. If not, too bad. The sound was lost. Being a new venue I had high expectations for the sound quality but that was not met. People sat after a few songs and only got up again for the hits. I have to believe the sound people for Toad know what they were doing and it did improve a bit but never reached quality. I like the setting and will try it again but hopefully with better results. No complaints about the band at all. Rusted Root was high volume rock and sounded ok. The venue did not suit Toad the Wet Sprocket and I do not think there was anything the band could do about it.

Love Toad's music. Fear is one of my favorite albums. The sound was terrible. I don't know if it was the venue or the equipment. The singers voice is low to begin with and it sounded to me as if he lowered the key a tad more which made it hard to hear him singing. I couldn't understand what he was saying either. I thought the performance and musicianship was great but was sadly marred by technical issues. I'm still glad I went to see them though! Being a fan makes you overlook things just because you're seeing them live.

The show opened with Rusted Root. The crowd was not entirely familiar with the band, but they pushed through and had a very nice performance. Toad was outstanding as always in there performance that seemed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Fear. This is the second show I have been to that the performance was hampered by technical difficulties with microphones and instrument connections. It seems to be a venue related struggle. The venue is a top notch visual experience, but I might lean on more familiar venues until this is addressed.

Toad the Wet Sprocket, a band that has returned after many years, is stronger than ever. The new album, "New Constellation" takes "old" Toad an alchemist (taking what is already great and somehow, making it even greater). The show was truly spectacular. The music set was great! A wonderful blend of recognizable tunes from the 80's and 90's, was mixed with the newest fresh and lovely music. Glen Phillips, the band's lead singer, was entertaining in his delivery of comedic and also genuine expressions. A truly blessed entertainer, Phillips is able to open his spirit and heart through his music and offer immeasurable gifts to the world. He is a truly wonderful representation of what it means to be a transparent person doing exactly what he is meant to do: song-write (including lyrics), sing, play guitar, and perform. Dean Dinning, the band's bassist and back-up vocalist, is just as wonderful now as he once was. His addition to the band's harmonic vibrations, as well as his winning personality, are extremely noteworthy. Randy Guss plays the drums like Neal Peart. There are many great drummers, but Randy Guss is definitely among them. I am happy to see the original band has come together for this concert, and for other concert (going on tour this summer with Counting Crows!). Todd Nichols, the band's guitarist, and also back-up vocalist, is a personality with quiet charm. He performed the only Toad song with Todd's vocal leadership. He sang that song well and brought the audience back to a nostalgic time. His ability to do harmonics with Glen is also exceptional. Jonathan Kingman rocked the keyboards, another stringed instrument, and sang as a back-up vocalist. Another member of the Toad family (I believe he is Dean Dinning's brother, from what I can gather!) played one song with the drums and percussion. Great job! This is a stellar band. I appreciate that you have not "sold your souls." With the world's growing interest in popularity contests (based upon shallow value systems), I am proud that Toad has made a comeback. I highly recommend Toad's music and concerts. They are truly an exceptional group of men.

I started going to concerts back in '95 and loved Toad from at least '93. Right when I could afford to start seeing more shows, they broke up. I thought I had missed my chance forever. But, after nearly a 20 year wait, they reunited and went on tour again!! I jumped on the tickets as soon as they went on sale and finally got to see one of my favorite bands of all time! The show was AWESOME! Tons of great songs from their previous batch of albums, and excellent new material from the upcoming release (which I can't wait to buy). I would recommend them to anyone, and I will be at the next show they do in Houston!

Well this experience for me was great from start until finish. I've been a fan of this band for twenty yrs and this was the first time I had seen them play live, so just getting to see them was exciting for me. They played all the songs that I was hoping I would get to hear. But the big bonus about the show was that I got to meet the band after the show! I wasn't expecting that at all. So that was the icing on the cake.

Seeing them live was of extreme significance to me, since I am a big Toad fan. Their keyboardist provided an opening act by playing guitar and singing some of his own songs he wrote, as did a newcomer from L.A. who went by ZZ Ward - whose bluesy jangles got everyone swinging. The guys seem to be doing real well 15 years after their last album came out; Glen Phillips looks like he's hardly aged a bit! I was thrilled to learn that they are going to release another album next year. They performed one or two new songs at the concert, one of which I got a video of (among other songs). The only thing I didn't like was how they performed many of their songs in a different key, most notably their main hit "All I Want", which made it difficult to sing along. But it was still worth seeing them nonetheless, everyone there seemed to be a Toad connoisseur - singing along with the lyrics, united in harmony by the tranquil, peaceful sounds produced by one of the greatest, most under-appreciated and nearly obsolete bands of the 1990s! Some of their not-so-happy songs, including "Something's Always Wrong" - which was the opener, sounded more pleasant in a different key and at a faster pace. And they closed with their 2nd biggest hit, "Walk On The Ocean", which swept the audience away and cleansed their souls. In short, I would pay another $40 or so to relive the evening again. Everyone enjoyed the music, and the show was a success. Kind of cool watching their little drummer Randy Guss playing the drums, they're bigger than he is! P.S. My set list is not in perfect order; the first four songs, and the last one, are correct; other than that I'm not sure I got them in the correct order. But I'm pretty sure I got every one of them in there nonetheless.

The Vogue is such a great place to see an act like this. It's intimate, and you could tell that all of the people who were there, were TRUE TWS fans and not a bunch of indifferent, uninterested people who were there via corporate freebies only interested in making the scene. All of the people around me were singing the lyrics along with the band, and dancing. It was such a good time. They played a lot of material from 'Dulcinea', and also announced that after 17 years, they will have a new release out soon. At least two songs from the new disc were played and sounded very good. After the show, Todd & Glen came out and posed for some pix and signed some things for fans. Awesome show. Awesome night!

I love this band. Years ago I met a guy who told me he thinks they may be the one of the best bands ever. As time has gone by and I've listened to more and more of their albums I'm inclined to agree with him. These guys are stellar musicians, every song, every album is great- how many bands can say that nowadays? And the songs carry you away, lift you up and leave you feeling wonderful. After 25 years, would they still be good? They were, delivering up tried and true favorites as well as lesser known ballads. Not only is their music awesome, but this band has the easy stage presence that wins hearts, comfortable, at ease, and cracking jokes. And the band before, Hey Marseilles was a treat, offering up a mix of ballads that sound vaguely celtic. Their band, a celist, violinist, trumpet, and accordian player provided beautiful interweaving melodies to the guitar, base and drummer. Check them out.

The first concert I ever went to was a Toad show in 1994. I got to see them again a few years ago, too. But they've never lost their charm and the songs still hold up as well as ever. They play them with about as much conviction as ever, too. If you're a fan of Toad, there's no reason not to go see this show. You'll undoubtedly fall in love with them all over again. NOTE: The set list I've added is not in the correct order and I don't think I forgot any songs.

Although their hey-day was in the Nineties, a reunited Toad the Wet Sprocket brought together a pretty substantial crowd here at this great venue, the Pageant. The band, it seemed, was a little shocked at the reception they received continually all night. Classics like "All I Want" and "Walk on the Ocean" were full theater sing-alongs. Band sounded crisp... All I would have liked was for the concert to go longer and seen a couple more songs. But all in all, very worth it to see one of my all time favorite bands together again.

This was definitely an evening to bring back a lot of memories for many folks. When the bands you listened to in highschool and college come back to play the tunes you used to enjoy with friends at dances and parties, one cannot help but to feel nostalgic. When the band is humble about all of that, it makes it even better. Glen Phillips, the lead vocalist and guitarist for Toad The Wet Sprocket, came out and announced his friend and opening act Willie Porter. They didn't get a local celebrity to do their announcing. They were humble enough to do things themselves. The opening act was a great warm-up for Toad, which was a far cry better than the venues depressing vamp music. Willie was a mix of bluegrass, folk, and rock and demonstrated a skill with a guitar that wow'd the audience. His songs were either funny or meaningful or both. Willie even had the audience give him subjects for him to form into a song to showcase his song writing talents. It says something about an artist to make up a song on the fly about gas prices, Michael Jackson, roller derby, burritos and explosive diarrhea. Now for this show, the only way I could've gotten any closer was if I was actually sitting on the stage. By request of the band, the sound crew turned a couple of the monitor speakers towards the crowd and asked those who were right in front to help with the sound check. Does this show a certain lack of professionalism? Certainly no. It shows the band wanted the show to be an enjoyable experience for all. Glen and company come out and give a no-frills but easily entertaining show. Some bands spend too much time talking and bantering between songs, some bands just say "thank you" (if that much) and move on to the next song. Toad got it just right, allowing time for ponder jokingly on what it would be like to be a casino moat fish. While I, like many others, were hoping that we might get to hear some new material, everyone was treated to a select grouping of fan favorites. Around me, everyone seemed to know lyrics to all the songs and when they weren't singing, they were dancing. After the show and the encore, the band even came out and spent some time with the fans, taking pictures and signing t-shirts. Unfortunately, the venue kicked out everyone who didn't have "a pass" before the entire band came out, so I didn't get to meet everyone. I'm not sure if this was some sort of special arrangement the band had or something the venue did to sell pricier tickets. Overall, apart from having a monitor speaker in my face the entire show, and the sound crew acknowledging this, this was a great show and I cannot wait for Toad The Wet Sprocket to return to Kansas City.

This was my first time to see Toad live. I started listening to them in 1998 and they quickly became one of my favorite bands. All in all, they played various tracks from several of their albums, including Crazy Life and Woodburning, my two favorites. After the show, three of the band members mixed with the fans and signed autographs and posed for pictures, which I thought was very kind of them. This meant a lot of me and I know it did to many of the other fans.

This is my second time seeing Toad The Wet Sprocket. Both were at the Uptown in Napa (which is my favorite venue). This time however they were way to loud for such a great theater. Even with earplugs. That being said still a solid performance.

Great show, Toad played a nice mix of old, new and hits, almost two hours. Having great seats didn't hurt either (third row, nearly center). Glen had a great rapport with the crowd and Todd really rocked up 'California Wasted.' Rare Bird is my least favorite track off of the new album, they could've easily played Get What You Want or Is there Anyone Out There? but that's really nitpicking.

The Uptown Theater Napa was great! Not a bad seat in the house. Toad was good, but so loud I was hearing distortion from the speakers. Played to many songs I'd never heard before, probably from their new CD. Tommy the High Pilots who played before were great! Would go back to the theater again.

This was the first time I've seen Toad the Wet Sprocket live, so I cannot compare to any shows they did back in the 80's or 90's. However, I've listened to their music for years and they sounded spot-on! It was a very clean sounding show, which was so nice. We loved the venue, too--S. Shore Room at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. It was an excellent setting where it was intimate enough to see and hear everything. I only wish the show was longer, as seemed a little shorter than other shows. I also wish they would have told a few more stories about their songs and lives since their original formation--that would have allowed for a much closer experience for the crowd. It was a wonderful time....looking forward to seeing them again at the end of the tour.

For the old school concert goer, this sincerely talented band played a "Fly from Heaven" show. It was general admission which is the ideal experience where one can mill around the venue without the confines of assigned seating and constant security hassles. All four original members played 22 songs. They played a well represented set list consisting of and transcending their music career in a laid back setting, hitting hits such as "Something's always Wrong", Walk on the Ocean", and "All I Want", delivered in perfect synchronicity; In this case, the non chart songs are just as good or better than the ones who hit the top 100. Ticket price was actually reasonable. Glen wore shoes. EVERYONE should purchase "New Constellation", their first release in 16 years. It is a fantastic cut. A PERFECT NIGHT WITH REAL MUSICIANS. And they all came out after the show to greet fans and sign autographs. THANKS TOAD.

I am a long-time fan of Toad the Wet Sprocket and saw them at the Bowery Ballroom. They sounded great and seemed happy and enthusiastic to be playing together again. The playlist included all the old greats and several from their latest release, which sounded even better live. The only complaint was the number of people in this cool but small venue who WOULD NOT BE QUIET during the show. People-if you want to have cocktails and visit, please go next door to the bar. We fans came to hear the music!!!!!!

Setting in the Orch, dead center middle of the room. The band came on to a warm welcome from long time fans. I always liked the textures and moods of Toad's songs and melody which was all there, but was subdued by the horrible house sound system. The entire show was like an training session for a very inexperienced audio professional. Vocals were all mid range, very harsh, no guitars, bass guitar was like one big wash out no definition what so ever. The horrible mix prevailed until 4 songs before the end of the show, at which time it seemed like someone flipped the light switch to the ON!! position, all at once there were guitars in the mix' with presence and the vocal smoothed out on top of the mix, the bass tightened up and gained definition, a night and day difference! The band responded to the delight and became more animated and excited after struggling through the entire earlier part of the show during which at a number of times the singer expressed his disappointments and was chalking it up to an off night, he should have been directing his remarks to the house sound company. "Come on Bergen PAC get it together!!"

Toad the Wet Sprocket played an excellent show at the Bowery Ballroom. The venue was definitely not one I care to go to again. No seats and sticky floors. The crowd was really weird--- many of them talked through the whole show. Why pay money to see a band if you are just going to talk?

It was a dream come true to finally see TTWS after being a fan since about 1995. The music was amazing and Glen sounded better than I had imagined. In the past, when I have had Pit tickets, I have met some of the coolest people in the world, who have actually become post show friends. I even made a new friend at thisTTWS show. It was sad however that sooo many of the show goers who were at the front row were so nasty to some of us just trying to get in the the front row for one song. We didn't want to "steal your seats", and we went back to our spot on the floor after 1-2 songs. These nasty show goers clearly never learned how to share, and as far as I believe, music is for the fans and meant to be shared. These unfriendly and mean people seriously needed to mellow out and understand that they were at a rock concert and not playing in a sand box with toddlers, not wanting to share their toys

With their first new album of music in about 16 years, Toad the Wet Sprocket has returned and amazingly sounds better than ever. The set list was the perfect blend of classic songs (hits and far favorites) as well as about half a dozen new tunes. They performed for nearly two hours and the crowd was with them the entire show. I got to a lot of shows rock, pop and country and I can honestly say these guys are among the best live performers out there. This show could not have been better! I'll definitely be getting tickets the next time they swing through Boston... you should too!
