Soul Asylum

Although synths and neon clothing were staples of the '80s, alternative band Soul Asylum stuck to their guns with their guitar-driven grunge sound and ripped jeans. 30 years since after their debut, the band still knows how to rock a crowd, as Dave Pirner's unique, raspy voice carries their powerful music to new heights and stirs emotion in audiences nationwide. Whether they're playing '90s cult classic \"Runaway Train\" or treating fans to newer tunes, Soul Asylum always deliver a vigorous live performance, and fans can expect more of the same as they hit the road for the Summerland Tour 2014 with fellow rockers Everclear, Eve 6, and Spacehog.

It's so worth the $25-$30 to see these guys. Evan Dando plays a mixture of familar songs off It's A Shame About Ray and Come on Feel as well as some solo stuff and excellent covers found off Favorite Spanish Dishes and Car Button Cloth. Just him and his electric guitar. The only negative about his set is that it's 30-40 minutes long when this guy should be the headliner. He's absolutely amazing live and this is probably one of his best tour performances in a few years from what I hear. Soul Asylum plays all their singles & hits as long as some new stuff and exude so much energy you can't not be entertained watching them. They still sound great and Dave Pirner seems happy to be up there and engages with the audience a lot. Overall this show was a fantastic surprise and one of the best I've seen this year or in any recent years! Don't hesitate to see either bands whether on this tour or another later. Didn't stay for Fountains of Wayne but certainly worth the ticket price to see these other two legends if you're a big music fan or just want to relive your 90s teen years for a couple of hours.

With a couple of new members there is a lot of energy and life in the show. You can tell they enjoy what they are doing, which makes the crowd enjoy it even more. They are definitely a good live band and played a wide range of their music from the 80s to the present. Despite the change in members, they seem to fit well and are going strong. The band has evolved and shows off new music, but Dave is still wearing his old holey sneakers and plays true to the same spirit he always has. This was a small venue and an engaging show. Most of the band came out after for drinks and were very approachable for the few straggling fans hoping for an autograph or photo. If they don't all come out, it is easy to get someone to take a poster or CD backstage for them to sign. My only complaint is that the only CD they had for sale at the merch table was the newest one. I wanted to pick up some old discs. I can hit up an online store, but would have rather given my money straight to the band.

It was great to see the band having so much fun playing their hearts out. They sounded just like they always have--fantastic! Little Eli singing "Stand Up and Be Strong" with his dad (D. Pirner) was priceless. My only wish is that they would have played longer, but that is always my wish with Soul Asylum. In the last couple years I saw Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Motley Crue and Soul Asylum (a few times) and, though all were good shows, Soul Asylum is the most fun live. I strongly recommend going to see them live if you a chance.

First, the MN Zoo is always a great show. It is the perfect venue for any show. And, Thursday night was no exception. The weathear was great, the bugs were few and the music was awesome. Slim Dunlap opened the show and although the adults in our crew loved his satrical Dylan guitar harmonica thing the kids were too stoked to see some rocking and so they were bored. Not too worry I do beleive that the demographic audience was reached and we will be apt to go to another Slim show. Soul Asylum shoved on stage with fun and high energy. Tommy Stinson proved to be a good replacement (figuratively and literally) and humbly filled the bass spot for the all too missed Karl Mueller. Micheal Bland was nothing less than great. He paced the show and added a new power to the old songs. Throughout the show Pirner and Murphy reminded us why we all fell in love with their music in the first place. The intellengent lyrics, the poingant messages and most importantly the great music holding it all together. Thanks Soul Asylum for giving us rock-n-roll that we can share with our kids that isn't dumbing them down but rather helps them think about the world they live in and their place in it. We've taken our kids to your shows since they were in back packs. Now they are 8 and 10 and they are making their own music in our basement!

Thursday night at the MN Zoo had to be one of the best concerts I've seen there over the last 3 or 4 years I've been going to the Music in the Zoo series. The front band Slim Dunlap came on first and played a good set. Then at 9 Soul went straight to some of their most famous work and got the crowd going. Lead singer Dave Priner voice still puts a chill up my spin and his energy on stage revivals any young musician. The zoo is a great venue for music except there is not enough space to dance. I'm headed off to the store to buy their new CD.

The show was excellent, except for the sound set up. One of the guitar amps was set too high, and the screech of the high notes drowned out the voices. Both outside microphones were set too low, and the guitar amps were far too loud. The sound set up was amateurish, and embarrassing. The show could have been great, but it was screeching loud and nearly painful. I noticed many people leaving for periods of time to avoid hearing damage. David Pirner and Soul Asylum were wonderful, but they were damaged by the pathetic sound system.

Not only was the music great but the band seemed genuinely humbled to be back on stage! Dave Pirner's young son was an unexpected star of the show; singing on stage with his dad and dancing off stage during most of the evening. We go to at least one zoo concert per year and this was one of the best we've seen!

A band I have listened to since the late 80s, but had never seen live. A band I even grew a little disillusioned with after the whole "Runaway Train" to success that happened. Yes, it's a good tune, but not their best. Not even close to their best. I kind of stopped following them when I heard "Misery" first come out, their first single from the follow-up to Grave Dancers Union. Lyrically, I thought "Misery" was pretty weak and just sought refuge in the early brilliance and intensity of albums like "Hang Time." When I saw they were playing NYC and releasing a new album, I figured what the hell. I always dug Dave Pirner as an icon - he was a rock star before he was a rock star. He looked the part before he played it. Hell, he may have even invented the look! So to see him the other night, with his torn jeans and untied Converse shoes, I was stunned with admiration. Here's a dude who has stayed true to himself, seemingly not caring much about others' perceptions of him; just being who he is. And thank god for that! His pipes are still some of the best, strongest, and most intense in the business! He and Dan were clearly loving their time on stage and their connection is very clear to see! I was hoping to see Tommy Stinson on bass, but he was, sadly, absent from the show. The Bowery Ballroom is a great venue for any show, but Soul Asylum knocked this one outta the park! I'd see them again any and every chance I'd get! The new album is fantastic too!

Soul Asylum sounded great. Dave Pirner hasn't lost anything, and the band was tight. However, what we did not realize when we showed up at 7:30 pm for the 8 pm show was that there were 3-- count 'em-- 3 warm up bands. So Soul Asylum did not take the stage for 3.5 hours after we arrived, at 11 pm! Since the place had a 'no-re-entry' policy, we had to sit there watching a Paul McCartney concert on the Big Screen and the warm up bands, none of whom were all that entertaining. Culture Room is to be applauded for brining some great shows to South Florida, but the web site did not say anything about when to show up..... We would have preferred to go out for a leisurely dinner and watch March Madness, then show up at around 10:30 or so. Given the age of the audience mostly 30s to 50s, maybe Soul Asylum could have come on at 9 or 10 pm intstead. We can understand one warm up act, but 3? Hopefully Culture Room can do a better job of publicizing the evening's schedule in the future.

First of all, this venue is awesome. Spacious seating, beautiful grounds, and decent acoustics. Dada opened and blew me away. A lot of sound for a three man band, and all musicians seemed more than proficient. Great solos by all at one point or another. They played a good hour set and gave way to Soul Asylum who lived up all to hype I had about them. I have waited 15 years till they came close enough (350 miles) to travel to see. They played a great representation of their career, and added enough light moments to keep us all smiling. No encore, but after "Stand up and be Strong" closed it out who needed it? Already knew Dave and Dan were great musicians, but Michael Bland and Tommy Stinson were great and into playing for the small intimate crowd. Got to check them off my bucket list, and it was well worth the wait.

You simply can't beat Soul Asylum at First Avenue. From the show's opener "Bittersweet Heart", to the closing encore "My Generation" cover, the remainder of the setlist was nicely sandwiched in. This show proves that this band needs to be seen by the masses and be re-born into the public consciousness once again. I have seen Soul Asylum many, many times. I go to all the area shows. They played old, obscure, new and even cover tunes! Tommy Stinson, took lead vocals on a cover of the Who's My generation! Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy the long-standing original members have found the perfect foils for Soul Asylum. Michael Bland is a monster on the drums. The guy can play. Please do yourself a favor you won't regret it. See Soul Asylum. See them often! I will continue to..

I love seeing Soul Asylum. They are a great live band. Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy have Tommy Stinson (The Replacements\\Guns N Roses) on bass replacing Karl Mueller (RIP) and Michael Bland (Paul Westerberg\\Prince NPG). The band was loose, rocking and played an 18 song set. Northern Lights Theatre is a cool place to see a show. I liked the setlist as well. They did old songs, classics, covers, and songs from their latest release The Silver Lining. They have the catalog, the chops and it is always a fun time. Do yourself a favor. See this band, and see them often. I do and will continue to do so! Always a fun time.

I am a hardcore fan of Soul Asylum for many years!! I have several cd's including Clam dips and other delights - Made to be broken - Let your dim light shine - Grave dancers union - And the horse they rode in on - & perhaps my all time favorite Hangtime!!! So when they did Cartoon (my favorite song) off of Hangtime I was in heaven!! It was crazy because I was screaming CARTOON!! And they started it WOW!!! Easystreet was awesome as well!!! Although I was dissappointed in the overall turnout it wasn't half the crowd I expected?? & the fact I was front row and didn't even get a gutair pick..sad moment....Also the Band seemed bummed out as well & Drunk!!!

I have seen SA at DTE several times, but never as the headliner. We've been waiting for them to have the full headliner set. The crowd was small but enthusiastic. The band was definitely "ON" and tore through their set. The only thing that would have made it better is if there had only been three bands on the bill with SA getting a longer set.

Soul Asylum was great as always, perhaps a bit short on tunes though. Their show lasted a little over an hour but I would like to have heard 3-4 more songs. I think for the money, we should have had a couple more songs. The venue sux. I would not pay to hear anything in the Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater in the future, it's too uncomfortable, there was not a great variety of refreshments, and it's a hassle to get to.

Four bands for $33. Masquerade, Chris Avay, Lavola and Soul Asylum, in that order. All the bands were very good. Masquerade and Soul Asylum were the Alternative bands, Chris Avay and Lavola were more hard rock. The mix was good. The guitarist for Lavola was amazing, could be the next Lenny Kravitz. Soul Asylum was excellent, didn't stay for the whole set though. Don't like to leave mom alone for too long, 91 and I'm her primary caregiver. From what I did see they were true to form and played the crowd pleasers. I would have rather seen a band open for them, but they had three bands to warm us up. It was like a festival, lol. They have to sell drinks to make it profitable, so I understand. Overall and excellent show. Would recommend them to anyone looking for the more recent high energy bands. Chris Avay and Lavola were very high energy.

This concert was unbelievably perfect in every single way. The weather? Gorgeous! Not hot, not cold, no wind, no bugs. We couldn't have asked for better. The venue? Fabulous! I'd never been to a concert at the MN Zoo Ampitheater before. What a great place! I was fortunate to be sitting third row center (literally the band was like 12 feet in front of me), but I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. The band? Dead on and hot! Great selection of songs from their early Twin Tone years through their latest CD, The Silver Lining. Dave Pirner entertains like no other. First, we always enjoy a show at the Wellmont -- a great venue, though the sound seemed to be a bit distorted in the upper level (loge seats, where we sat for this show). * We attended this show with another couple (the Soul Asylum fans to our Beat fandom) and were all wondering about the sequence / duration of the bands' sets beforehand. * The English Beat started the show (very promptly to show time) and played a full set -- for longer than we had expected -- and covering the usual classics as well as a few from the new album. Dave and Matt M (sax) always rock, and Sasha (toaster) was a bundle of energy. * Soul Asylum followed and launched right into some of their big hits. Good energy from whole band but it was WAY too loud overall ... I had a headache about 20 minutes in, and there were people all around us with fingers stuck in their ears (not kidding). Don't know if this was venue-related, the band's sound guy, amp settings, whatever ... this ended up detracting from an otherwise enjoyable show.

Despite having a drummer that had only been with them for two previous shows, Dave and the band pulled it off rather well. The sound was a little rough but that only added to the small club feel. This was the first time I'd seen Soul Asylum after Dan's resignation, so I went in thinking it'd feel weird. It did, but not as weird as I'd anticipated. Justin's a wonderful guitarist, technically. He's right on target with every note. He needs to work on stage presence a smidgen - he seemed nervous the first few songs, then got into it as the show went on - but that's to be expected. One doesn't replace a founding guitarist with 30 years in and slide in as though nothing happened. Overall, I'd always recommend seeing Soul Asylum if you have the chance.

Soul Asylum absolutely brought the house down! The show was very high energy and masterfully performed. These guys know what true rock & roll is all about and delivered one hell of a show. I can't recommend it enough.

I purchased tickets for Soul Asylum not knowing what to expect. Knowing that the group has not had a hit in more than a decade, I hoped to hear the big hits from Grave Dancer's Union and Let Your Dim Light Shine and I also hoped they would play selections from their latest, Delayed Reaction. I had purchased that disc only a few weeks before and I was starting to enjoy some of their most recent songs. Soul Asylum played several selections from Delayed Reaction, probably more than half of the album. I was happy to hear the songs live. The ones that I previously liked were even better while some of the ones I had previously not liked as much became new favorites to me. What would a Soul Asylum concert be without the hits: Runaway Train, Somebody to Shove, Just Like Anyone and Black Gold, along with Misery for an encore. They sprinkled in several other songs that were fan favorites before they hit the big time in the late 1990s. The drummer was amazing. I am sure the group does not miss their previous several drummers because this one smacks the skins with a force unlike most other drummers. Their bass player is on tour with the group, replacing their regular bassist who also plays with Guns N Roses. He was definitely up to the task. Guitarist Dan Murphy was as good as he has ever been, playing the familiar riffs along with some of the slickest leads in rock. Of course the star was Dave Pirner, who sounds exactly as he did years ago and he seems to also have grown a lot more comfortable as a performer. This is Dave's band and he is the star of the show. I would wholeheartedly recommend a Soul Asylum show to anyone who knows any of their tunes. If you only know the old tunes you will love to hear them and I guarantee that you will like some of the newer ones. If you have just gotten into Soul Asylum, you will love hearing those new tunes and you need to hear the classic Soul Asylum as well.
