The English Beat

The English Beat

THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT: More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown.

It was our first time attending this venue, it was beautiful inside. It was nice to come and sit and enjoy a nice dinner, all the people at our table were super friendly and we ended up making new friends that night. Now the band, the band was simply amazing, they sounded great the venue had great acoustics. The bad was Interactive with the audience. The option to stay seated or hit the dance floor was great

The English Beat were in great form! They played some of my all time favorites and the crowd was really into the show. Many dancers in the audience and much fun by all! The Irving Plaza was a great venue - really clean, good and reasonable priced beer. Yes, the show was terrific and the Plaza was really great. Come back again, English Beat!

Two words to describe Dave Wakeling -- unbelievable energy. He played a two hour set under hot and bright lights with no break -- every great English Beat song was hit, and even two General Public songs as well. Dave sounded great -- do not miss them on tour!

Saw the US-version of The Beat, led by original-member Dave Wakling, at the Horseshoe Casino's Whiskey Roadhouse in Council Bluffs, IA. I saw this band last year at Omaha's great show bar, Slowdown. This year's show was good, and would have been much better except for the venue. The band covered hits and so tunes I didn't know, and clearly enjoyed themselves as much as the crowd enjoyed listening. They played for two uninterrupted hours! But no encore :(. The Roadhouse is basically the Casino's bar with a stage and dance floor (& open to all the noise from the slots on the Casino floor). Only a few high-top tables and side banquet seating; all "reserved" for their comped "high rollers" so those of us who paid for tickets were forced to stand or sit off to the side in bar (and have the music compete with the slot "ding, ding, ding" all through the show. Security staff was rude beyond belief. Bar food abysmal. Would not recommend this venue to anyone. Hope the English Beat comes back to Omaha and plays the Slowdown or Waiting Room. Great ska band with some classic tunes.

They may not have all original band members but their show is so great to see live. I see them every time they come through Santa Barbara. They seem to really love playing every time and Dave sounds as good as ever. I would recommend everyone that is into music go check them out. Their music gets everyone dancing.

Huge 30 year fan of the Beat but wow shockingly disappointing show Saturday night 7/2/2011 at Irving Plaza in NYC. Saw them in '09 at same venue, Maxwells in Hoboken and they've been great. On Saturday they played 1 hour 20 (maybe), very low energy, mediocre set list, left out a ton of hits, very few up-tempo songs and no encore !!! First time in my life a quality band doesn't play an encore set. Maybe Dave was sick or he had a plane to catch but when you come to NYC you need to bring it. Maybe age is catching up to Dave - he's had a great run for sure but that show was so poor it's probably the last time for us.

My wife and I were attending a convention in Anaheim and looking for something fun to to on Friday Night. Low and behold, The English Beat were playing at the House of Blues. I had seen them play at the Palace in Hollywood in 1985 and they were amazing. So we go the the concert, not really knowing what to expect. To our pleasant surprise, the band was a good as ever. With incredible energy, they sounded great. They played all their old hits (including 1 or 2 General Public songs) in a 2 hour set. We left at 1 in the morning completely satisfied with our 80s flashback. I hope we can see them again real soon!

The band didn't go on until 10:40. What the heck. The crowd was 30 - 50, we aren't young people anymore. We left at 12:00. I'm sure the band noticed that the audience left around 11:30. I also miss Rockin Roger. Work things out already. And the House of Blues needed to turn on the air. It was crazy hot in there. We had to go out into the Balcony to catch some air. Why was it soo hot in there?

English Beat has been rocking the ska club scene for 32 years now, as they reminded us on Wednesday night at the Showbox-Market. Despite the long tenure, they sound as fresh as ever. They kept the mostly over 30 crowd hopping and there were more than the normal quotient of hot mommas, shakin it 80s style. There were drunks and punks as well, but they were in the minority. It was my third time seeing the Beat and they didn't disappoint. Roger is back with some interesting rythmic chatter between songs. It was great music and a great night out. Felt more like the weekend than a Wednesday although the over 30 crowd left a little early to get home for the babysitters. I can't recommend the Beat enough. I'd see them again in a heartbeat.

The Rose-Venue in Pasadena was much to be desired(old & dated). 1 Bartender was ridiculous ..Crowed was Interesting & random. Only selling 3XL Shirts or XL (WT)?! Wow! What a great show. So much energy. Went on a work night and almost bailed on it. It turned out to be one of the best show's that I had been to in a long time. I am a long time fan from back in the 80's and the crow was mostly older fans too but younger people need to check out these guys too. They have more energy and showmanship than most of the younger acts out playing gigs on the road. This actually seemed more like a reggae show to me - like UB40 - which was a very pleasant surprise. I danced throughout the event and left with a huge smile on my face :)

Another great show by Dave Wakeling & his English Beat. he's always full of energy & the crowd sensed it & rocked along all night long with him. he has a great support cast wth a mix of young & veterans musicians, they kept a high pace high energy all evening long. they had a lot of fun onstage & as a crowd we could sense it & joined them along & rode that wave. The Rose is a great venue, ample of space to move around, very clean with other spots outside the venue but still in the same building to spread out and relax or mingle if you wanted to move away from the show. very professional staff & courteous. it felt very safe & comfortable. it made for a very fun evening.

The Beat came to Charlotte NC! I was very happy being a transplant we really don't get acts like The Beat to come through Charlotte. The venue: The Underground is a new music venue in Charlotte. It has great sight lines, 3 full service bars and offers food. The restrooms were very clean, the food and beverage prices were not bad. The show: Don't know the name of the opening act but their music sounded like a car wreck, enough said. The Beat: last saw the group as General Public back in the 80's and Dave Wakeling didn't miss..a BEAT! He was great, played all the hits he was engaging with the crowd. The band was good also although I thought the sound of the Sax was a bit too low. The Jamaican guy, whoever he was, WAS AWESOME! He kept the crowd up and was the "soul" of the band, I can't say enough about his performance. I would have given the band 5 stars but the venue had a very low ceiling and the sound was muffled. Definitely happy I went and would highly recommend seeing them when they come to your town!

This was a fantastic show, far better than I could have anticipated. The band was tight and Dave Wakeling's vocals were outstanding. The Beat are always great. That goes without saying. The sound at the Underground was abysmal. Came close to ruining the night for me. Fans of 80's music will recognize the music of The English Beat almost immediately. Their songs have been featured in your favorite 80's movies from Ferris Beuller's Day Off to Weird Science to Gross Pointe Blank. The only original member is the frontman, singer and song writer, Dave Wakeling. Dave, who has been dubbed the King of Ska, leads a band of very talented musicians. At Blueberry Hill on a Sunday night, they were in perfect form and sounded crisp and tight all night. They immediately got the crowd up and moving with the opening tune, Rough Rider. The dancing continued through their final number, Jackpot. Along the way, the band jumped around energetically, clearly enjoying themselves and the crowd. One the the two keyboard players, Minh Quan, seemed to almost defy gravity as he jumped around while still playing his static keyboard. The groups other vocalist is King Schascha, who constantly worked to keep the crowd engaged. The star of the show is definitely Dave Wakeling, whose voice sounds fantastic all these years later. Particular crowd favorites were EB's most famous songs, including Save it for Later, Tears of a Clown, Mirror in the Bathroom and Twist and Crawl. In addition, the show featured the hit Tenderness from Dave's other famous 80's band, General Public. At the end of the night, the crowd left tired, hoarse and very pleased. It's hard to believe the energy Dave puts into these shows after all these years. If you're a fan of the EB, you need to catch a live show. Even if you're not a fan, go. It's a guarantee that you'll end up jumping and dancing around with the rest of the crowd.

I've seen the English Beat before and I'll continue to see them time and again. Their music is uplifting and upbeat and no matter your mood or proficiency you will find yourself dancing. The band never let up and the energy flowing from stage to audience and back again is palpable. I've seen them several times and they have never disappointed - true professionals and masters of their craft. I didn't see too much of Soul Asylum's set (and tbo the English Beat is why I was there) but they were in good spirits and had plenty of energy. The sound was decent and I overall they were good too.

First off, the Royale is a great venue - small enough to feel like a club but big enough to handle a decent crowd. The show started at 7 with Soul Asylum taking the stage. They were very energetic and still played awesome music. I am surprised they have been relegated to being a backup for a small tour like The English Beat. Seems like they should be part of a 1990s or alternative music festival. Anyway, they were good. The music was performed perfectly but one nit is that the volume on the vocals seemed to be turned down too low so it was hard to hear the singer, Dave Pirner, who is still super into his music. The English Beat seemed to have a much larger following, with the crowd growing by about 2x to 3x that of Soul Asylum. Dave Wakeling still has that super unique voice and the rest of the band did a great job of performing the classics from the Beat's 1980s success era. They also mixed a couple of new songs in, which also sounded great. Finally, they did a super cover of Tenderness (General Public) as well. I'd definitely see them again when they come back to Boston in October with Squeeze (a much more fitting pairing than Soul Asylum).

One of my all time favorite bands, Dave and the guys perform their songs and get you moving. Superb in all aspects, and the Libby Bowl is a wonderful venue, of the beaten path. Will be checking into more shows here for sure.

ENGLISH BEAT PUT ON AN INCREDIBLE SHOW AT THE LIBBY BOWL IN OJAI, CA. AT ONE POINT, LITERALLY 80% OF THE AUDIENCE WAS DANCING IN FRONT OF THE STAGE OR IN THE ISLES. SERIOUSLY THE BEST TIME AT A CONCERT EVER!

A very good batch of musicians nailing the English Beat 80s sound - only Dave Wakeling remains from the original lineup but it didn't much matter, the songs were fantastically rendered. In particular the rhythm section and sax absolutely NAILED the original sound - not sure why they needed 3 keyboardists, but it didn't detract from the joy of the show. Well worth going out on an icy night!

Wife and I spent a memorable Wednesday evening entertained by a great band. EB is an eclectic bunch of great musicians led by Dave Wakeling. After sitting at home working all day, I reached my daily fitness goal during the show. Loved it.

I often attend concerts of performers and bands that were famous when I was in college (or even high school) (I am 52), and often they do not come close to the same sound or energy that they had "back then." There are exceptions of course--big name examples include for example, Bruce Springsteen or the Rolling Stones. The English Beat Concert was one of those bands. I saw them this week, on a Tuesday, during a Winter Storm warning--and in a relatively small venue and not expecting much. BUT they really delivered--with a genuine sound, a tremendous amount of energy (the general admission crowd comprised of children, teens, young and old adults was dancing during the entire show--as were the band members) and my friends and I had an amazing experience! -

The English Beat proved they still have what it takes to show their fans a great time. It was a high energy experience and the music was wonderful. Can't wait until they come back!

I had a great time at this concert- I'm in my twenties, so I was a bit of an outlier with regards to age (older band= older crowd) but everyone was great, and I actually enjoyed myself a lot more than I have at some "younger" concerts in the past. My qualms with the experience overall were fairly minor- 1) as parking/traffic control goes, the experience wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either. Since I had never attended a show at the underground before, the lack of really visible signage for parking or officers conducting the flow of traffic was a bit unsettling. The parking attendant I did find though was polite and helpful, and 6 dollars (it's 5 if you have cash) for parking just across the street was very affordable. 2)My remaining points are entirely issues I had with the band- their merch was cash only, which I didn't have and have never needed before when I've attended shows, so it was upsetting not to be able to get a band tee, which is something I usually do any time I see someone live. I also didn't notice any ATMs nearby, but again, maybe that was a signage issue and I just missed them. 3) I've been to my fair share of live shows, so I know not to expect the band on stage on time, whether they have openers or not. It comes with the territory, so I expected to wait. However, I did wait over an hour, probably closer to an hour and a half, before the band ever made an appearance. To be fair, they had a couple of okay DJs to try and hype the crowd, but the wait was so long that people mostly just ended up drunk and restless. Long story short, I've waited less time for bigger bands. There wasn't an encore either, which might have made the waiting a little more acceptable. Overall, the band sounded pretty good though, and except for one particularly rude, particularly drunk concert go-er that forced herself between some of us, I had a really great time and would probably go again if I had to do it over!

I have seen the Beat a few times over the years. This sadly was not nearly one of their better performances. The acoustics were not good at The Underground and not sure if that was the band or the venue. Ska has taken over the band and our group thought it was fun for the first 30-45 min and then it got old. King S was fun and then annoying. Most of their best songs were not played until way into the show. Our group was bored and sadly we left before the end of the performance. This was our last Beat performance (and maybe theirs in the area too).

Sounded great, fun and full of energy. Venue was good. An hour+ of the opening DJ was frustrating...

I have seen them twice in the last year and both times the show was excellent. They played a small venue in Ponte Vedra, FL as a one-act bill and had great energy for a two hour+ gig. I saw them again as part of the Retro Futura tour (w/ Howard Jones, Modern English, Bow Wow Wow, Men Without Hats, Katrina & Waves) in Charlotte, NC. Much larger venue and crowd where their set was only about 40 minutes and limited to just the hits. In our opinion, they stole that show with great audience interaction. Dave Wakeling is a true performer and you can't miss with him on stage.

Very disappointed. Purchased tickets for what was advertised as a New years Eve event. Although the band was good, they started at approximately 9:15 and ended at 10:30? We were thinking they were taking a break when they stopped, but soon realized the show was over...... on New Years Eve? So basically, pay a ridiculous price for the show and food, wait forever to get service, and then watch the band for about an hour before ending the show? Where does a New Years Eve show end at 10:30 ?......the over priced Canyon Club in Valencia.

English Beat sounded great. Good energy. Had everyone on their feet; then a cougar climbed up on stage and started doing selfies with Dave Wakeling. He was gracious, tried to keep going but it only encouraged others to do the same thing. We left. Wanted to see and hear the band, not watch drunks trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.

Dave Wakeling and the English Beat created an intimate atmosphere in a fairly large concert venue. His music inspired the audience to abandon our seats and come down to the stage to dance the night away. The music is still fresh and as cutting edge as back in the day. I loved that he played all the well known hits during the sets instead of holding out for the all too common and contrived encore. No encore, the show ended, and Dave came down from the stage to mingle and take photos with his fans. How refreshing! A few hours after the show, my companions and I were walking back to our cars after having a nightcap at a local watering hole. Dave was standing in the street outside the tour bus, we approached him and he talked to us for about fifteen minutes before retiring for the night. What a sincere & humble man. DON'T MISS THE ENGLISH BEAT!!!!

This was the 5th time in 34 years I have seen the English Beat, but this band was not really the English Beat. It was the Dave Wakeling Band. No Ranking Roger, some ordinary musicians, and only a saxophone making up the horn section. Aside from a crappy sound system and an over-modulating microphone (couldn't understand a word Dave Wakeling spoke), Dave's voice sounded great, and he did all the songs you'd expect to hear, including a few from a soon-to-be-released album. They did around 23 songs, some long versions, which put the show around 2-1/2 hours. So I do feel like I got my money's worth, but the real English Beat with Ranking Roger were better. A plus was Dave coming into the audience at the end of the show to say hi and take some pics.

As good as they were over 30 years ago at the Peppermint Lounge in NYC. Played two sets filled with every hit that one would want to hear including most of the songs from their debut album, I Just Can't Stop It. Lots of people dancing near the front of the venue. Don't miss them during this tour when they are the only act.

The concert was impossible to enjoy. The acoustics sounded like we were in an Kazoo factory. To make matter worst, every song was an extended play of teh original song accompanied by a saxophone solo

Had a great time! Danced in my own space. Coincidentally met the sax player when I just happened to stand next to him and asked him a question. Very nice guy and great sax player. Songs brought back great feelings. Wished it would never stop. Good memories were made.

The English Beat still has it! Dave Wakeling's voice is unique and he is such a humble musician that loves his fans. He truly knows how to keep his audience entertained. The entire band is excellent in each performance. You have to experience this band at least once in your life. Even if you aren't a big 80's music fan!
