Glen Hansard

GLEN HANSARD IN CONCERT:Singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has dabbled in many musical projects throughout his career, but he's finally stepping out on his own as a solo artist for a slew of 2014 tour dates. Since his early days as the lead singer of The Frames, Hansard has become a major influence in the Dublin rock scene with his impeccable songwriting and folk spirit. In performance, the Irishman delights audiences with his calm demeanor, gritty vocal style, and beat-up Takamine acoustic guitar, which he's dubbed "The Horse."  Whether he's covering a Bob Marley tune or passionately singing his hit "Falling Slowly," Glen Hansard's compelling performances will have fans on the edge of their seat at his 2014 shows.

Amazing. At the end of the show he jumped off stage and ran to the back of he room, into the lobby and started playing a song acoustically. My life was made. Amazing and so personable. He just commands the audience. It's fantastic.

Amazing and well-run show, starting on time with the wonderful Aoife O'Donavan opening on vocals and guitar, accompanied by Glen's pianist, a beautiful 40 minute set. Glen took the stage with his nine piece band, including three horns, piano, bass, guitar, drums, cello, violin and himself on guitar, mandolin and piano. He opened at 9 PM with a touching acapella solo vocal before being joined by his band, configured in various sets and subsets, and sometimes dismissed for Glen's solo songs, and played until 11:30 PM, with nary a break before the encore, on which Aoife, and even the crew joined him on stage to sing a verse of the "The Auld Triangle", again, acapella,in Irish Pub singalong style with the audience, and this encore was followed by several more songs to close the show. It was so fun!

What a treat to see Glen and his group play his music live. Hansard's music is truly poetic and rich with meaning that we all can relate to. The performance was as good as the CDs, but with the added live energy. The drums just a tad low in the mix, but present. Glen must have broken a dozen strings over the course of the night - but, didn't miss a vocal word or beat (his tech, Nick, earned his keep this night!). The Taft is a great venue (though seating in the old hall is a bit cramped). Many surprise guests as well. Glen definitely knows how to play to an audience, bringing in Cincinnati-centric touches that appealed to the crowd. A great show!

The Glen Hansard/Lisa Hannigan concert on Friday, June 29th, was truly incredible. Glen was, as usual, earthy, soulful and just downright great. It's hard to convey in words what a Glen Hansard concert is like unless you've been. To anyone who has not experienced it, you must go see him next time around! I've been to Glen's shows many times, but this concert was my favorite. It was a real treat to see Lisa Hannigan for the first time. Her voice is almost other worldly. It was a great night filled with amazing music at the Beacon Theater last Friday.

Glen Hansard clearly enjoys what he does, including playing music with other musicians, and shared it in a meandering, wonderful show that he seemed perfectly happy to continue all night!

A great show, again. Each Hansard show is it's own animal, but they are all punctuated by some stories (my favorite part) and emotional extremes. He eared a standing ovation at this one. As usual his cover of "Astral Weeks" is crazed, intense, and amazing to watch. The band with him is clearly talented and is moved as much by music. He makes you laugh and cry and rock out along with him, and as cheesy as that sounds, his shows are truly audience enveloping. His albums don't do his live performances justice because his interplay with the audience and his passion enrich his music and make his shows an experience. This was his best, and I've seen him several times before.

It was an incredible show. Glen Hansard seems to enjoy the interaction with his audience, and will respond to it very well. Have never been to a show where the Encore was almost as long as the show itself. His voice range is superb, and the sound quality was extremely accurate to the albums. We were blown away by the whole experience. We are looking forward to find out if there will be a double CD of this memorable performance. And definitely buying it! Also both acts were right on time (8pm sharp and 9pm sharp!), and we have a lot of respect for that. Didn't know pictures could be taken. Would love to have brought the camera so that a photo or two could have been uploaded... Next time for sure!

Glen was amazing and had the Frames and some other notable guests, but best of all was Lisa Hannigan and her band (the opening act). Knew her incredible voice from her previous work with Damien Rice, but she is also a great songwriter and has a wonderful little band.

Upon arriving to the Beacon Theater, I noticed that there was someone playing in the LOBBY! To my surprise, Glen had decided to grab some of his bandmates and busk in the lobby before the show! Fans were blown away by his passion and dedication. You can really tell this man loves what he does. After a few songs, he went backstage to prepare for the show. Lisa Hannigan (who formerly toured with Damien Rice) was a great opener and after her set, Glen played for close to two hours. Upon ending his encore, he walked his whole band through the crowd, through the lobby, and then out the doors of the Beacon to start an impromptu parade on the streets outside! Truly incredible moment.

Having now seen Glen Hansard perform as on opening act for Damien Rice, headlining as one half of the Swell Season and now as a solo artist, I can say that his love of performing has only grown with time and he gives just as much now as he did before all the international acclaim and Oscars. It was a truly magical night and I'm so happy I was able to be a part of it.

This was a really great night. The first stop on Glen's North American tour to promote his first solo album, Rhythm and Repose. I knew it would be an excellent evening and certainly was not disppointed. Glen has a way with the audience and it was all smiles all night. Seriously, he's a very talented man, but the Dublin accent alone has American audiences eating out of the palm of his hand. I'm pretty sure he could say anything and people would fall all over themselves. Not that I can blame them. I am guilty of the same. The songs Glen played were a mix of tunes from the new album and also songs from the Swell Season. No Frames songs this time. It was nice to see all the Frames lads with Glen on this tour. There was an excellent Van Morrison cover of Astral Weeks. Glen's guitar playing on this was out of this world! Holy hell. How their were any strings left after that, I'll never know. Also at the line "would you kiss-a my eyes" there was a resounding "YES!" from a female in the balcony which got a great big laugh from Glen and the audience. To watch him play that one song alone was worth the price of admission in my opinion. Special appearance by Javier Mas was also a real treat! I would reccommend Glen, The Frames, Swell Season, whatever incarnation you want to call it. You won't be disappointed.

I LOVE Glen Hansard. There, I said it. I think he is a brilliant songwriter, a master arranger, and a composer of the utmost skill. His concerts, whether they be a busking trip on the side of a store in Ireland, or in a concert hall in Las Vegas, are filled with comedy, high emotion, and moments of sheer brilliance. This was my fifth time seeing him in the last twenty years. I've seen his shows before his Oscar, and after. I've seen the shows before the Tony, and After. He's great at picking out some high quality, gut wrenching beauty when electing the opening acts. This show wasn't as energetic as shows in the past. I would have given it a full 5 stars- but he's mid tour, and seemed a bit low key from the other events. A five star Hansard has people gasping, women in tears, men with jaws dropped, and even strangers stopping dead in their tracks wondering who this guy is who doesn't need a microphone to get his life spread out on his tunes. I've seen the 5 star Glen at least 3 times- and really can't compare him to anyone else when he hits that apex. What can you say about a guy who just has tones and notes, rhythm and chords as blood and flesh? He's it. The real deal. He IS the music. That's what makes him stand out. He isn't "oh look at me, pretty songwriter who can make young girls swoon". He is "TAKE this life and WEAR it!". That's the kind of show he gives. THAT's the kind of musician he is. THAT is the reason to go see him, even if he is on a low energy show and even if he holds back his strongest tones. Glen does NOT disappoint. See him. See him as soon as you're able.. see him.. because even if you're eyes are cemented shut, his music is going to drill into you as if it were there to save your life. He is THAT good.

This was my 4th time seeing Glen Hansard live and he more than lived up to my expectations. He played both old and new tunes so there was a great variety for everyone. I love how he often tells a short bit going into most of the songs too. If you know Glen's music you have to see him on tour and even if you don't know it well, you will still be entertained by his talent. Great performance from Glen! He sang for like two and a half hours and came back for a long encore, he was cool. About the venue, the Orpheum theatre has no air conditioning, which is ok sometimes but it was very warm. I feel they could have chosen a better venue for the concert. Also, $12 for a beer? Seriously? Phenomenal show! His passion is undeniable and makes for an incredible evening. His backing band was equally as good. My wife - the person who first introduced me to Glen and the film Once - got sick the afternoon of the show so I called my father to join me for the concert. He had little-to-no prior knowledge of Glen but walked out a fan. Glen's setlist was great, too. He covered decades of music, mixing in a fantastic cover of Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" with his own new material and popular stuff from the Once soundtrack. He also covered different genres and tempos that made for an overall great show.

If you want to hear real talent with no help from bombastic theatrics, and sometimes, no help from microphones at all, Glen Hansard is the man! I know I'll never be disappointed when I go to a Glen Hansard concert, even if I don't know half the songs he sings. :) He brings so much energy to his performances, even the newer, mellower songs have a quiet intensity like the first song of the night, a non-mic'd version of "Grace Beneath the Pines". For this performance in Minneapolis, I noticed he didn't drink water once in his 2-hour setlist. (That's pretty amazing!) He just kept going and going and going, never flailing in his energy.

Glen Hansard has ALL the goods. Remarkable songwriting abilities. Masterful playing skills and technique. A voice with unique power, range, and emotiveness. Witty and personable banter in a live venue. An outstanding backing band (not sure how many of these talented musicians he's be able to take with him for the whole tour. String and brass were a welcome bonus.) Hansard is one of those rare performers who completely tears down the fourth wall and makes it his mission to give everything he has in terms of music, story, and humor, and he does this with a sense of undiluted joy and earnestness that is refreshingly infectious. Only weak spot was the opening act, whose names I don't think we ever actually got. They seemed unprepared, and the music was rather staid. A concert with Glen Hansard will stick to the ribs for days after.

We really enjoyed Glen's concert at the Oakland, CA Fox Theater on 3/12/18. The facility is wonderful for acoustics and ambience. Glen put on a great show, just over 2.5 hours of music; no warmup act. The band was excellent; 12 members total with violins, cello, trombone, trumpets, guitars, percussion and keyboards. We had a rockin' good time. This was our sixth time seeing Glen and we're ready to go again when he comes back to the San Francisco/Oakland area. Do yourself a favor and see him if you can. You won't be sorry.

Saw Glen Hansard on his first night of his 2018 American tour, backed by a 12 piece band....strings and horns included. It was phenomenal. If you have a chance to go...GO!

Became a fan of Glen' s music after stumbling upon the film "Once" a few years ago. The concert was superb. Opened with "This Gift. And then played every one of his very best songs. Ironically, the weakest song in his repertoire was "Falling Slowly." He's probably tired of playing that song . He reached into Van's play book and did rip roaring version of "Gloria." My wife, who is not a fan, thoroughly enjoyed the concert and said she would be willing to see him again. That is the ultimate compliment.

He just gets better with age. I first saw Glen Hansard in Dublin, circa 1984 busking on Grafton Street. Puts on a great show and seems to relish being where he is now.

Glen Hansard as usual put on a fabulous show. He as as passionate about his craft as anyone out there. The venue is great besides the fact that it was incredibly hot in the balcony.

This was one of the most entertaining shows I have ever been to. The music and banter were both excellent. After three hours, Glen looked like he could keep singing and playing all night! A true performer! The venue was cozy and just right for a more intimate feel. We had a wonderful time!

Glen Hansard remains one of the best concert performers I have ever seen. His heart, talent, humor, and love for his art and admirers, and talent are felt in every note and word. Perfect.

Glen Hansard never fails to invoke emotions and people singing along. His lyrics reflect our existence, and his Irish humor makes it a little easier going down. I did miss his "Polish friend" however.

yet another amazing show from glen hansard, a man i would pay money to watch read the phone book. he is the ultimate passionate performer, and he gives his all at every single performance he gives. this show was really interesting because the band he was touring with contained several different string instruments, but no horns and no drums. it was really cool to hear him play some of the same songs but with really different arrangements than i've heard before. glen is an amazing story teller, and he is so generous in his efforts to connect to the audience that you just can't help but engage with him. be it in sing alongs or just end of song applause, the crowd was clearly in to it and responding to the energy he was putting out there. i've seen him perform about 25 different times now, in multiple cities and even a few different countries. though each audience and each venue is different, the constant is an insanely great performance that leaves you with a restored faith in humanity, and a deep sense of satisfaction at having heard some kick ass music.

I've seen Glen perform four times now, and this show was a special treat. He was backed by a 9-piece band and the energy from all on stage was amazing. The venue (DAR) suited the tone of the show perfectly. Per usual, he engaged with the audience and played a blend of old and new. Highly recommend!

Richard Thompson was phenomenal, as always, but so self-effacing and almost acting like the crowd didn't know him, which is probably true. By contrast, Glen Hansard's lyrics are a pile of mush. His language suffers badly in the light of Thompson's brilliant songs. All his manufactured emotion, as well, rang hollow. We walked out on the set and found a beer garden.

Glen is amazing. He's a storyteller - whether he's sharing an actual story or telling a story through his music. His passion and his sense of humor get me every time I see him. I also loved that he had his strings section and brass section with him, as he did not have them the last time I saw him. I would prefer to see him in a smaller venue, though. And I think he would prefer to play smaller venues, too.
