this event could have been spectacular.in the beginning they announced the host whoopie goldberg couldnt make it.that was the first sign of trouble. there was a full ensemble on stage.the dap kings were a really good house band. preservation hall were good too. after that there was a run of old retired musicians who didnt seem to be ready for a show.did they even do a rehearsal? the high light for the evening was when marcus king and warren haynes showed up.together they lifted the energy level to a new platform. sadly after they left the stage it got boring. yes there were a few legends and old time otis performers but it just fell flat. the son of otis redding is not any were on the same level of his father. he does not have the voice, talent or stage presence. if they wanted to show respect for otis then they should have left there egos at home.they should have gotten performers of major levels. if they do this again it would be better to hire more professional acts. on a technical aspect there was issues with the sound. worst sound ever at the apollo.

What a spectacular blast of soul from Daptone Records. An eclectic line up of acts, playing short sets as part of a three-night live album recording (one of only a select group of acts ever recorded at the Apollo). Charles Bradley was in fining screaming form, incorporating current political events with the historical context of his lyrics. Sharon Jones had so much energy, it was truly infectious.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings put on one of the best shows I've ever seen! She has the energy of twelve women, and the band is funky and obviously having a blast. It is so much fun to watch Sharon perform--she is so lovable, and she has such a great connection to the audience. In fact, she invited a good number of the female members of the audience to dance on stage. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings give their ALL--none of them phone it in, and in a time when music can be electronic and cold, this is like getting a warm, funky, sweaty hug!

My Second time seeing Miss Sharon Jones, the first being Valentine's day '09 at the Nokia Theater, and I never thought she could top that performance but she did! This smaller venue really worked for Miss Jones who is a non-stop ball of fire dancing up and down the stage with the energy of an internal nuclear power plant! The DAP Kings were on their game as always and looking as a Dapper man should! If you want to see a show where you find yourself unconciously groovin' the entire time, Miss Sharon Jones and the DAP Kings will take you there...and then some!

Jones power, facial expressions, movement, voice, the daps with their precision and tempo it has been one the of honest to God-Best times in music in my life. I hope to continue to see more and more from this band and its other bands from the small record label in Brooklyn. Thank you for making my life feel revived. I don't even smoke and I needed a cigarette after the performance by its shere sex, power, humor, sarcasm, and talent. My best wishes to you Sheron Lafaye and to you too the dapps and your Branches. The Saturday night show was great. The low point was the Blue Notes, an atonal band that was more noise than music. However, the other artists especially Charles Bradley made up for it. A cross between James Brown and Little Richard, he put on quite the show. I had to buy his CD. Sharon Jones has no equal though. She's get the energy of someone half her age and her voice is wonderful. Her imitation of Tina Turner was perfect. She just wasn't on stage long enough. But that's OK. She sang her heart out. All in all, it was a great show.

From the opening act to the finale with Ms. Sharon Jones the night was outstanding. Soul Revue, was indeed, soulful and there wasn't a person sitting in their seats. Charles Bradley is such a showman and Antibalas brought funk to new heights. When Ms. Jones came out the crowd was so ready and appreciative. She brought a packed sold out show to tears with her inspiration, dancing and singing. If I could have gone to all three nights I surely would have. The Apollo is a beautiful venue, smaller than the Beacon Theatre with viewing from all angles. I can't wait to return. Hail, hail Soul Revue!

Sharon and the band are on the top of their game. We feel so fortunate to have been there and watched her amazing performance considering her recent health crisis. Sharon is the real deal with some vintage DNA in her system from a different time in the music industry. And boy can she dance! The band is so tight, the show so choreographed the polish is obvious. I went to this concert to see Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and I left it loving every performance that was on the stage, including Antibalas, Charles Bradley & his Extraordinaires, The Como Mamas, Menahan Street Band, Saun & Star AND, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. Sharon Jones proved that a woman can be down and out with cancer and then come back as a 58 year old woman with enough energy and eloquence to fill the Apollo Theater. Charles Bradley was reminiscent of James Brown and yet very much himself and I loved the afrobeat of Antibalas. The added bonus was hearing some wonderful gospel music from the Como Mamas. The Apollo Theater was rocking with energy from both the performers and the audience. Great show!

My wife and I caught Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at the State Theater. This is the real deal. They had the entire house on its feet for a two-hour funkified, sweatified, Dap-ified, explosion of soul. Ms. Jones makes Tina Turner look like Debby Boone, and the Dap-Kings are undoubtedly the tightest band in the known universe. The all-ages crowd (we weren't the youngest or the oldest, for a change) really enjoyed themselves. This is no doubt what a 1960s soul review was like, a terrific night of music!

Sharon Jones is great and she has a wonderful band, but openers THE HEAVY are the band that matters. THEY FREAKIN' ROCK. The Heavy is relevant modern HARD soul that blew us away... while Sharon and the Dapkings -- while great at what they do -- could easily be from a different decade and sound contained within a certain style. Not that there's anything wrong with that...... but THE HEAVY is hip and vital. Another comment... why does she share the stage with the audience so much? We don't want to see the girlz from the audience.... we want to see her and her band. Especially the background singer on the left, she's GORGEOUS. Make no mistake.... Sharon Jones is a top notch performer and her band is exquisite.

It was a bummer Whoopi Goldberg got the flu and couldn't host the event; it was missing an emcee and the tickets suddenly felt overpriced without her there. However all the music was excellent and hopefully the concert benefited the Otis Redding Foundation. The first three opening acts were great. They each did about 3 songs. Then Charles Bradley came on and was fun for a while, but it lasted WAY too long. Three songs would have been plenty! Antibalas came on and did a bad jam session for 40 minutes. So 2.5 hours and no Sharon Jones :( Finally Sharon comes on - she is fabulous - but it's short. She expended a lot of energy dancing around the stage. This is how it should have gone down: 15 min Saun & Starr 15 min Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens 15 min The Sugarman 3 45 min Sharon Jones (new and old material) 20 min Sharon and Charles 20 min Sharon and Antibalas 30 min Sharon Jones (classic hits) Encores

Both nights were incredibly moving--for using their voices and songs to address the national crisis of police brutality, for digging deep into their roots and traditions so movingly, for having such great back up bands, for coming together at the end for as one big soul family.

Once again the Daptone family brought it. Every single performance was amazing, the transitions between acts were flawless and the musical talent was one for the books. Loved finally getting to see them all together in one place. So much love for all these artists who truly put their heart and soul into each and every performance. can't wait to see them again!
Given what Sharon Jones has been through lately - her performance was life affirming and inspiring. But under any circumstances - she is just a force of nature! That was one of the best concerts my husband and I have been to. How she performed like that for 2 hours - I can't explain - but I'm glad I got to be a part of it. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings brought the house down!

An evening of wonderful music. Not just an oldies act but as if the genre had never gone out of style and kept eveolving. Sharon is such an inspiration. Gave it all in spite of her illness. Keeping rhythm and blues alive. Dap-Kings are so tight!

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings never fail to amaze! This was her first performance following her cancer treatment, and she brought the house down as usual, smiling that beautiful smile, dancing, and belting her heart out!!

It was not good that the show was advertised for 8:00PM at Showbox at the Market, but the main act wasn'l going to be on stage until 10:00PM. Would have preferred to just see Sharon Jones and the DK's rather than sit in the bar to wait for the doors to open, sit for a boring lead off duet and the REAL SHOW wasn't starting for a couple hours..

Sharon Jones always puts on an amazing show. A solid two hours of dancing around the stage and belting out great songs. She is so much fun to watch and gets everyone dancing - this show was no exception. I especially loved hearing the Dapettes sing at the beginning. However, there were some problems with the monitors that Sharon was trying to communicate to the sound people, and was getting clearly frustrated as the show went on with no improvement. I would think a venue like the Bowery would be able to fix something like that if it's noticeably detracting from the show. That took away from the first few songs, but eventually she got into her groove and gave up on waiting for it to get fixed.

Sharon Jones is one of the most authentic, energetic and soulful performers I have come to know (through her music) in my lifetime. Her raw talent and sensational band (the legendary Dap Kings who formally performed with Amy Winehouse) are nothing short of impressive. If you have not seen Sharon Jones, you are missing one of the real greats!

It was like going back in time to watch a group that really truly knows how to perform. On top of that I love Bowery Ballroom as a venue!

Aside from the incredible music Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings play with their heart and soul, the performance and showmanship of this group is top 5 I've ever seen. The energy fills the room and promises to entertain. You MUST see this group live, they will NOT disappoint! If you're luck you may even get to dance on stage... LOVING YOU SHARON.

Highest energy show my wife and I have attended in a while. We were on our feet the entire show, dancing to the groove laid down by the Dap-Kings. A very polished group of musicians. We might catch them again in SF with My Morning Jacket. The Uptown is a world-class venue for live music.
