This was my first time attending this event. Parking was convenient and reasonably priced at $10. The auditorium had good acoustics. I was on the first row but in the corner so I was disappointed that I couldn t see the whole stage. I was able to leave my seat and walk to the back where I could see better and take some good photos and videos. It was also nice that except for the prohibition of using flash, there was no restrictions on photography. The artist appeared in the lobby immediately after the performance to provide autographs and beer and wine could be taken into the auditorium. Very enjoyable. I will be keeping an eye out for attending again next year.

The concert was throughly enjoyable and the performers even looked like they were having a good time. We did know about the "Flavor of Jazz" with the food tastings or we would have arrived earlier The students that played before the main attraction were well trained and showed much potential.

The concert started on time and delivered everything I had expected from the Rippingtons. I was a bit surprised to see Paul Taylor on sax, as I had expected Jeff Kashiwa since he is pictured on their 2009 web site. However Paul Taylor really delivered a great performance. The group sounded so good at this venue. There were no bad seats. Each member of the group got to do some solo stuff and each was accomplished at his instrument. Russ Freeman is a master guitarist. He is the heart and soul of this group. My only regret was that they did not play St. Tropez, my favorite Rippingtons song....maybe next year.

The Rippingtons concert at the Variety was great. Good sound! Small "personal" setting. When the band came back for an encore, they performed one more song, and then a couple of classic rock snippets of Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison! I had never been to the Variety Playhouse before and did not like the surrounding area. Lots of gang graffity and no patroled parking areas.

From the down beat of their performance they sounded and looked first rate. Although they perform commercial fare, the precision and quality of their performance is extraordinary. This was a wonderful evening of entertainment.

The venue was great....The Variety Playhouse in little 5 Points . Great sound, small theater with stadium seating. The Rippingtons were fabulous. A good mix of old and new music. The encore included a tribute to Jimi Hendrix which I thought was rather cool and the crowd did approve.

The Rippingtons seem to keep getting better. Russ Freeman is one of the most talented guitarist of his time and play upfront or just as a sideman. His reconfigured Rippingtons continue to showcase some of the best talent in smooth jazz.

Traveled from Ohio for the 1st Annual Uptown Charlotte Jazz Fest. Very impressive event. Venue is excellent, lineup was hot and the weather was sweltering !!! First experience seeing Mike Phillips in person. He is high energy. I especially wanted to see Maysa after following her over the years with Incognito. Wish she could have sung much more. Always good seeing Alex, Norman and The Rips again. I am looking forward to bringing some of my Ohio jazz friends down for the Second Annual Fest. Keep on keeping on Charlotte !!

A very well put together jazz fest with some great perfomances. It was nice to be able to meet the artists after they performed. The one disappointment was the one group I really wanted to see - The Rippingtons. I thought that being the headliner that they would play longer, and had hoped to meet them after the show (like all the rest). Apparently, they had a plane to catch so headed off stage quickly. Overall, though, it was lots of fun.

Comfortable venue, but the sound board folks did not have the mix right. At the beginning of the concert the players monitors weren't working. Throughout they had the back line to loud so that the primary artists (guitar and sax) were under amped. Disappointing. The musicians and what they played were pure Rippingtons...awesome. Great to see them in CNY.

Both shows were magnificent. Grace Kelly is a delightful Ball of Fire... and provided a splendid performance for the opening act. This was our first time seeing and hearing Ms.Kelly. Just an amazing level of energy and sincerity in relating to her audience. Great singer, composer and saxaphonist! The Rippington's were in fine form as per usual. This is the 3rd time we have attended a Rippington's performance and we hope to attend several more in the coming years. This group exudes a wonderful blended cohesion. Any one of the group's members can stand alone in ability and quality but together they are... "The Rippington's". Hope they continue for another 25 years!

If the Rippingtons come back to Rochester, you need to see them. Yes, even if you are not into Smooth Jazz, they perform at such a high caliber that you will enjoy the sound, the solo's, and the way the band members bring out the best in one another. The sound at the Kodak Theater is fair --> not nearly as good as the sound at the Buffalo State Performing Arts Center (the only other real place that shows Smooth Jazz concerts in the area throughout the fall-winter-spring seasons). What is most troubling is the $10 fee that Kodak's charging for parking...for what? There was no security present in the lots after the show, and Buff State parking is free. Most places charge some but $10 bucks? Even at a Smooth jazz concert, I'm really tired of paying good money to sit and watch and have my view obstructed by jerks in front who have to pull out the cell phone and record while holding their phone up above the head in front and right in my view. Kick their butts out next time.

Fantastic concert! I really enjoy all my Rippington albums. They are just an outstanding soft jazz group. This concert was not that, it was an amped up version of the band. One of the best keyboardist I have heard, great sax player and bassist, too. But Russ was sunk in the mix. Since he is one of my favorite guitar players and the featured musician but the sound guy didn't get the memo. At times hard to distinguish him vs. others. Inexcusable front monitor issues to start the concert that lasted for first group of songs. Hope to hear him again soon! Rochester Jazz Fest???

This was our first time seeing a show in the Kodak Center and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. We've seen the Rippingtons on several occasions (basically whenever we can!) they are amazing! We were lucky enough to be way up front for this show and it really let us see just how amazing these musicians are - the show was great, the venue was just the right size - both large enough and small enough to feel like you were a part of the show and the acoustics were great too.. Awesome show - Can't wait to see them again!

The Rippingtons music was great to hear! My disappointment came with Russ Freeman s lack of connection to the audience. He seemed obsessed with the musical control gadget on the floor in front of him- looked at the gasget more than the audience. Would have loved for him to step to the mic to talk with his fans, to tell them background of the song he was playing and to share memories of some of his travels and songs. Yes a live performance is awesome to see but it s also a time for the performer to talk and connect with the audience. And for the record I really missed seeing the percussion section of the old days which was executed beautifully on the keyboard but not the same as watching it in a live performance! Love the Rippingtons music but missed a live connection which always makes a live performance memorable!

BB Kings always brings in a wide variety of artists and the tickets are affordable. Whats more, the experience is intimate; you can spend an hour and a half right up close with your favorite artists. And theres no "profit is king" mentality in that seats are first come first serve regardless of how much you spend. They serve great food and drinks, have great servers and staff and I always have an overall great experience!

I was so excited to see The Rippingtons at BB King Blues Club & Grill. The show started at 8:00pm as advertised, and the band was sounding unbelievable. My disappointment came when they finished playing only after 1 hour!!! I paid close to $70 per ticket, with all the Ticketmaster service fees, so for me and my wife, it was an expensive evening. To have them only play for an hour, and come out for 1 encore was really a huge let down. Again, they sounded great, but I was expecting at least a 2 hour show. I have seen several jazz shows, and the minimum they play is 2 hours. I don't think I would go to another Rippingtons concert because of their short set list. I have seen Peter White, Richard Elliott, Rick Braun and countless others, and they give a minimum of 2 hours of solid music. Russ Freeman made a comment at the beginning of the show that the band had no set list for tonight's show. I could see others in the audience were disappointed as well. Several people were venting their frustration on the shows length. "Come on Russ Freeman, you owe your audience better than that!!"

Jackiem Joyner and Selina Albright were great. Played for 1.5 hours. I do not follow these artists but was very pleasantly surprised by both. Great opening act. Ripps were great as always. Familiar old tunes and some cuts from their new upcoming album which sounded very good. I wish I knew the name of the sax player at this show (nope - it was not any of the familiar names). He was super good and I think he was the best part of this particular show. Still great after all these years.......

Good news, Rips fans; a new album is forthcoming. True Stories is scheduled for release in June and - as Russ Freeman told this sellout crowd in Reading, PA - they were working some of that new music into their set to "see what we thought." Based on the crowd reaction, we thought the new music was great! Jeff Kashiwa was not with the band at the Berks Jazz Fest, and the stand in was adequate, but not Jeff. The music was amazing, and I enjoyed hearing my favorite tunes, but the set wasn't as tight as it probably will be as they launch the tour in June.

This show was maybe the 10th time I have seen the Rippingtons. I go back to enjoying them since I first heard their music on a Miami Jazz Radio Station during a spring break. They were not played in Philadelphia at the time. I have all of their CD's some signed and they are the second most featured artist on my i-pod and i-phone, after Dave Matthews. They did not disappoint. I saw this line-up minus Brandon Fields before and they were fabulous. I do miss Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Stone and Steve Reid, but this group can cook! The Crowne Plaza Ballroom however crams way too many people into the space. I felt like I was in an airplane. I picked my seat based on the seating chart which should have been a mid aisle seat so I could strecth my legs. But the venue reconfigured the seating and I was shoved in like a sardine, with my knees hitting thr chair in front.

I was able to be on the front row in the intimate dinner club atmosphere of the Birchmere. I always wondered how fast Russ Freeman was on the guitar and I saw it first hand how effortlessly he played. I was also able to see him switch to multiple synthesized sounds for the guitar. It was great to see Brandon Fields, I heard a lot about him and he lived up to the hype. Rico on bass did not disappoint and consistently kept everything moving. Bill Heller is an awesome keyboard player and enhances the fullness of the Rippington's sound. The acoustics inside the Birchmere makes the concert 100 times better than being outside. This was the first time I saw the Rippington's in concert and they didn't disapoint. Now this comes from a long time fan- I have seen the Rips numerous times over the past twenty years- This show was absolutely horrible. The band is but a shell of it's former glory I will not spend my hard earned money on them again ever - The only redeeming factor was a special guest appearance by sax man Jeff Kashiwa - He was awesome. The new bass player who repaced Kim Stone was plain lousy- There is nothing left to say - It wasn't just a bad off night - It is young band members who are not seasoned and trying to fill shoes they will never fill.

Fabulous! Everything I expected and more. I think this was the 2nd best cocnert I have ever been too. (Paul McCartney being the best) I wished they could have played longer. The music just stirs the beat inside of you and makes the meaning of the word (music) really matter. Have this group come back soon.

For someone who has seen the Rippingtons many times over the years, this time was a real letdown. Even thought the advertisement would lead you to believe, neither Steve Reed nor Jeff Keshiwa were in attendance. Paul Taylor subbed for Jeff K. and did an admirable job. But Russ Freeman chose a Jimi Hindrix tune to close the show, very un-Rippington like. Concert was too short, many classic tunes left unplayed.

The concert was AMAZING!! Fan-freaking-tastic! The guys who opened for them had great sound and were magical with their fingers on the guitars. The drummer played on this "box" from somewhere down south that was some kind of awesome. Then the Rippingtons were...there are no words. The music coursed through me, I was jealous when some of the audience got up to dance. I finally gave in at the end when I knew I wouldn't be obstructing anyone's view. They had Paul Taylor playing on the saxophone and he is incredibly talented. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this concert. I hope they felt welcomed and will recommend our venue as inviting.

This was my first time seeing The Rippintons live after following their music for the last 15+ years and it was totally worth it! They rocked live, the crowd was great, and the opening band Roman Street was excellent. Great show!!

Wonderful! All members of the band are so talented! Having Paul Taylor there on sax added that much more! The sound that is produced by these five men is amazing! I had never heard Roman Street before and will seek them out in Mobile and elsewhere! The guitar work was amazing!

The Rippingtons were great and although Spyro had a more polished presence, the lead sax Beckenstein was always hogging the spot light with endless solos that seemed to blend together into a constant distraction. I felt like he had nothing to say but had to say it anyway. Additiionally, the cheap trick of playing two saxophones at the same time is like Eddie Murphy having to play all characters in a movie scene. I was not impressed. Music is about collaboration, a blending of talents to present a theme, evoke feelings or emotions, or just tell a story. Beckensteins solos were clearly about him and not the charts being performed. Individually, all of the artists are excellent, but the overall performance was just OK and it was disappointing to see so many empty seats.

Where was the percussionist? Saw Russ & the Ripps about four years ago in Morristown. They were the only act with Jeff K. and a unforgettable percussionist, they were missing from Fridays performance and their absence was felt. Paul Taylor did a great job on sax, and their music sounded fine as always. They came out first and Spyro Gyra came out last. Enjoyed the Ripps more along with Russ.

I hadn't seen Spyro Gyra live in over 20 years. Back then I would love to take a date to see one of my favorite groups. On a date with my wife to the Bergen PAC we found ourselves once again enjoying the energetic and enthusiastic music of Spyro Gyra. While the musicians looked a good deal older than we remembered (and so did the audience) the music brought us back to the days of dating. The concert was all I expected and more. I most appreciated the egalitarian approach they take to their music. All band members share in the spotlight and each one deserved to shine. Of course, I was most pleased to see those players I remember from 20+ years ago. Beckenstein, Schuman, and Fernandez form a solid core to the group. With the excellent bass work of Scott Ambush and the fantastic drumming of Bonny B we were rejuvenated. My love for this group has been rekindled.

Spirogyra was phenomenal! I started listening to them back in college in the 90's & I dare say, they sound as good if not better. Great rapport with the audience & memorable drum solo!

ive seen both groups at least 5-10 times; spyro has gotten much tighter over the years and their (relatively) new drummer, bonne bee (sp?) just adds so much to the group. With the rippingtons, i liked them but i always miss Jeff Kashiwa. This year's stand in was very good--but not kashiwa.

Rippingtons were good... not great. Sypryo Gyro was amazing. One of the best drummers I EVER heard. All musicians were really good. Enjoyed the fact that each musician got to play a solo - in different styles of music other than "core" Spryo Gyro sound.

I am 53 years old.... Very long term fan..... Buy the CD's .... At the concert they play what they want including others bands tunes ....also they went off into solo's that are like riffs ..... And just take away and alienate true fans..... So stick to the CD's

Overall a good concert. Rippingtons were fantastic, well worth the full price of admission. These guys seem to be a humble lot and very personable as well. Their music was very melodic and interesting so that the entire audience was moving and dancing in their seats. Not too much jamming and pretty much stayed true to established songs. I'd not want to miss these guys the next time they are in the area. Spyro Gyra, on the other hand, was not what I thougfht they would be. They played many obscure songs with lengthy jams featuring mostly Jay Beckenstein. There was a (too) lengthy solo by the outstanding drummer. This stuff is great if you like it. I don't. I go to these things to hear music made popular by the group, not by overindulgent individuals. Sorry Jay, I'll stick to your recorded music and pass on the next live concert.
