Tommy James and the Shondells

Tommy James and the Shondells

The bubblegum pop movement of the '60s wouldn't have been the same without the beloved tunes of Tommy James and the Shondells, whose prominent music took off during the height of the era. It's been almost 50 years since the release of their 1966 debut Hanky Panky, but the band is still impressing audiences across the nation with their expansive catalog of upbeat classics. His voice still on-point and smooth as ever, Tommy James and the gang hit the road once again for a nostalgia-heavy 2014 tour. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:After dabbling in several musical projects as a preteen, Tommy James recorded his firs.

Tommy James and the Shondells put on a really impressive concert! I didn't remember how many hit songs he had made. What was even more heartwarming was how he came down and mingled with a lot of the audience talking to people, shaking our hands and posing for pictures with several of them! t

Have been a Tommy James fan since the 70's and was very disappointed with the show in Biloxi MS. First, the music was too loud -- could not hear any of Tommy's vocals beginning with the second song, as the bass amplifier volume was too loud. Secondly, Tommy was on stage 60-70 minutes with 15 minutes spent making pictures, signing autographs, etc in the first few rows of the audience. I understand the total length of Tommy's performance is governed by the venue itself. Would like to see Tommy again but in a different venue where Tommy spends time making pictures and signing autographs AFTER his show.

My wife and I were excited to see the Shondells live because Tommy James wrote our song, "Crimson & Clover." However, the less than personal TJ hardly said a thing all the while his Shondells played hardrock interludes to some very sacred songs. I thought TJ might share with us where some of his inspirations came from. But there was none of that and a lot of very loud noise. I know ... It is Rock & Roll. I get that but I was there when he originally performed it ... And I mistakenly thought I would hear that again.

Tommy James is one of my favorite performers. He always comes through with a terrific show, very energetic and true to his music. He has so many hits and they all rock. Timeless. Mark Farner was such a pleasant surprise. What a musician. Loved him and his music. Band was great. The Rascals have such a special place in rock and roll history and Felix represents that. He is always terrific, and their music sure stood up to the test of time. So may hits and they sure make you want to get up and dance. Wish the original band get back together.

A fabulous show by three "oldies" headliners who were anything but stale! They all stand the test of time and had plenty of eneregy to boot. The songs sounded fresh and not rote. Tommy James is a master showman, a rocker, and a true gentleman.

I loved Tommy James and the Shondells but the sound system was off. It was too loud to be enjoyable. I did not enjoy sitting through the first two opening acts because they were not my type of music. It was a poor combination. It was the first time to a Bethel Woods show that I was not happy.

I was so excited when my husband bought these tickets for me for my birthday. But I have to say that it wasn't what I hoped for..Yeah we listened to this music when we were kids/young adults growing up...But now were in our 50's,60's & 70's, doesn't anyone do sound checks? Doesn't anyone sit in the audience to tone down the deafening/overpowering beat ? We're not kids anymore... Example: I went to an Air Supply concert a few years ago in Pough,Ny...It was like they were in my living room, you could hear every word, the acoustics weren't deafening and didn't drown out the lyrics, and I realize that over time singers might not have the vocal range they once had but geezzz we came to hear the music , the lyrics we remembered sooo well.. The horn section in Family Stone was excellent...The horn section in Blood, Sweat & Tears was phenomenal...and when Tommy James came out I thought this was great, it's an original singer , but the music overpowered the vocals and after 4 songs we left..The group sounded better 1/2 mile away in the parking lot because the beat wasn't so deafening.. Please share with these groups that we, as adults now, not wasted, not intoxicated, but as adults, are coming to pay homage to music we grew up with...why can't it sound like it did when they recorded it years ago?? If Air Supply & Tony Bennett can do so can everyone else...

Loved to hear my favorite songs (oldies) very much. Thought it was very kind of Tommy James to play some of those! Crimson and Clover, Hanky Panky.... what great memories they invoked! Where has that good music gone...??? I didn't really care for the newer made songs from any of the bands. Sad but true, I didn't find them very inspiring or uplifting... in the sense, that they did not lift me out of my seat and inspired me to dance or sing along at all. Loud Speakers were way too loud!!! I had to wear ear protection. A bit less noisy would only helped the quality of the music.

What a great show. These three great acts brought back so many memories. The best part was how great they played their songs. No new improvisational licks or new albums to promote. Just well played songs that the audience came to hear and reminisce. These bands have a good thing going here. Combine three great acts and play those songs just as we remembered them. Keep it up and my family and friends will continue to show up each and every year!

The Family Stone was good but the set was too long. Blood Sweat and Tears was very disappointing, but Tommy James rocked! Not only did he sound great but he played all the hits, as they were released and then went out into the crowd to thank the fans. Definitely worth the wait in the rain!

The Family Stone and Blood, Sweat and Tears saved this show! They were outstanding. Tommy James on the other hand was very disappointing. First of all, he was late. Then he performed like he was just rushing through the set to get it done. His schmoozing with the audience in the front section was just too much. He should have put that energy into engaging the whole crowd. Perhaps if he did more than half the people would not have gotten up and walked out. Bethel Woods is a beautiful place. Very clean, very well thought out, with incredibly nice people working there!

The only crummy part of the day was the weather. But, that's how the weather was back in '69. I thought of it that way and it didn't matter when the bands started playing. The Stone Family were really great sounding, Blood Sweat & Tears were as well (the acoustics are great at Bethel. Tommy James & the Shondells sounded just like they did back in the day and they even looked the same. I was very happy to be there; great music, great scenery and just a peaceful, happy feeling when I'm there.

Family Stone was very good. Blood Sweat and Tears played great music but we were disappointed in the vocals. Expected the lead singer to sound more like David Clayton Thomas when singing the David Clayton Thomas songs. Instead, the lead singer sang the great hits of David Clayton Thomas in his own style. David Clayton Thomas voice made those songs hits not the present singer. We have attended concerts of other bands where the lead singer left the band but the new singer performed the songs in the style of the original singer. It was as though Blood Sweat and Tears always existed without David Clayton Thomas. There was no mention of him. Tommy James and the Shondells performed well. It seemed as though the sound was slightly off tune.

Shameless milking of the Woodstock memory. Move on. Family Stone was fun but they were going through the motions - like a wedding band. The singer for Blood Sweat and Tears is better suited to play in Vegas. An insult to the excitement of the 60's.

When I bought my tickets, the concert was just advertised as Tommy James and the Shondells. Even though this was a Sunday night and I had to work on monday, I figured it was worth the 2.5 hour drive back. Then The Family Stone and Blood Sweat and Tears were added to the bill. Sitting in the rain with our feet in the wet grass and mud we couldn't make it to Tommy James. My wifes chair was very wet to begin with. I went to the "upgrade" booth but it was closed. yes it rained in '69 and i was part of the Santana rain dance, but that was during the afternoon, and I wasn't 61 years old. I don't know why the concert couldn't have been started earlier (remember Woodstock went all day), especially since it was a sunday night. Hopefully someone else will organize something for the 50th Woodstock anniversary in 2019

Tommy James put on a Five Star show! Each song was amazing and no messing around with anything! It was a long concert including two opening acts and the Fantasy Rock sets. I was a little disappointed with Blood, Sweat and Tears. BST is basically a tribute band now. Face it, most people want to hear their big hits. Talented as they are, the band played a lot of stuff to show off their strengths as a band, not the songs that made BST famous. The Family Stone was wonderful, if not just a little long. Hats off to them for bringing back what made Sly and the Family Stone immortal.

Tommy's voice was clean and pure. At 69 he sounded the same as he did in the 1960's. A show of all hits that were top 30 songs. Highlight was when he walked thru the audience to shake hands with the people and thank them for coming. What a Class act! He had his security still but pretty brave to do. Loved his slowed down version of I think were Alone Now. Such a strong voice hitting all the high notes as with a clean vibrato. His band was excellent. Great back up Vocals all in tune. Strong Bass player and strong lead guitar on solos. I would go again anytime!!!! Thanks Tommy!

As Lawrence Welk would say "those boys cana sure bogie woogie" Both groups were as good as we remember. Their energy abounded, and music was a tight as they originally were. Played all the songs they were famous for plus some. The Association's six part harmonies we as good as they were in the 60's & seventies. TJ showed he was the driving force behind the original Shondells. All in all a great/memorable evening!

Tommy James still sounded great, 95% of show was perfect, 5% had soundman problems, which I could actually see Tommy lipping some choice words to the sound guy on the side of the stage, could be because it was a special auction show, anniversary addition for the Meadow Brook Theatre but the show was only maybe 45 minutes, he did have a meet and great afterwards which could be the reason for the shorter show also. Would I recommend seeing him, yes I would! The man and the band still sounded great and polished. I liked that he played both versions of I think were alone now.

It was well worth driving seven hours roundtrip to see the fabulous Tommy James. He never plays near me (Washington DC) so I have to go where he is. But next year he says he hopes to play the Birchmere which is in my area. He enthusiastically sang many of his hits including my favorite "Crystal Blue Persuasion," "Hanky Panky," "Sweet Cherry Wine," "Ball of Fire," and "Mirage." When he ventured out into the crowd as he always does during "Mony Mony," he was so surrounded by adoring fans that he couldn't make it around the entire sold out room. He signed autographs after the show and I got to meet him and thank him for all the great music. There's a movie in the works based on his book, "Me, the Mob and the Music," and then a Broadway musical, which means he will receive the household name notoriety Abba did with Mama Mia and Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons did with Jersey Boys. Tommy well deserves it as he has been underappreciated since the 1970s.

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the concert. The Ides opened the show and played there hearts out. There horn section is second to none. Jim Peterik is a fun front man as well as singer, writer and founder of the Ides. Scott May tickled the keys as complemented the compositions with fresh inspirations. Than after a 20 min break, Tommy James and the Shondells came out and put a slightly heavers grove on there hits. That said Theyplayed all there hits and made them sound fresh. They didn't change the style or feeling of there work. Just enough rock instead of pop in there sound. People were dancing in the aisles. I have to give a shout out to the Rialto Theater. Great sound. I could hear all the instruments being played. I will go back there for a concert.

Tommy James and The Shondells were so awesome! They really outdid themselves at the show. Tommy even came off stage and mingled with the crowd and took pictures with them! The crowd really got into the great music and the atmosphere was great! It was nice that they played almost 2 hours and came back for an encore. The last band we saw there played for an hour and never came back out...that was really not worth the price we paid...such a disappointment. Tommy and his band really made up for that bad experience. Our only complaint was that it was so cold in there and there were quite a few older people who couldn't take it after awhile and up and left. We love the oldies bands so we suffered the cold and stayed...we are 64 years old so that wasn't easy lol.....Hopefully they can make some changes with that because we would like to see more shows.

As usual, Tommy James and the Shondells put on a great performance. However, John Sebastian was a total mismatch. Sebastian did a lot of talking and not a lot of playing. He plunked his way with an acoustical guitar which came across as very folksy. Not what I would want as a warm up or complement to Tommy James. Thank God Tommy came out all guns blazing with his Draggin The Line opener. These 2 should not perform together for the audience's sake. I only gave 3 stars but recommend the concert for Tommy James fans. You won't be disappointed with his group.

Tommy James and band sounded really great. Lots of hits and energy in his show. John Sebastion was terrible. The band was great and Tommy James was fantastic. The only problem with the venue was the view from our original seats. If we had not moved we would not have been able to see the synthesizer nor the lead guitarist. We moved closer to the center of the theater on the same row and the seats were perfect. I'm just a tad young to remember TJ and the Shondells when they were all over the charts (I graduated HS in 75). I knew their biggest hits, of course, like Mony,Mony or Crimson and Clover. But holy cow, the hits just keep on coming at a Shondells concert. They only did two songs I didn't know. Tommy James is still in great voice (but is pretty obviously tired by the end of the show). I thought it was terrific and would certainly recommend it to my friends and family.

A really enjoyable show. Very energetic and great sounds. Tommy James' interaction with the crowd was outstanding and a real crowd pleaser. Singing all the old hits was especially great for me, that is what I go to the concerts to see.

The restaurants on site appear to be understaffed to handle a concert night. The wait times were ridiculous because once seated, the place wasn't even packed. Took forever for food to arrive but it tasted good. The concert was great! He puts on a fantastic performance--heart and soul in every song!!

What a wonderful concert this would have been if we could have heard the words being sung! The instruments drowned out most of the words in the songs. Crimson and Clover, one of my favorites, is a quieter song, so I was happy I could hear that! I didn't hear one word of either of the encore songs being sung. There needed to be a better balance between the singing and the loudness of the musical instruments......it's sad as this could have been a fabulous concert!

Tommy and the boys sound like the group we used hear on the radio back in their hit producing days, only better. Tommy has somehow retained his voice quality over the years, and along withing the backing Shondels stayed true form to their originals. Along with enhanced production capabilities at the venue, the sound was familiar but bigger and bolder than their records. The Tulaip offers not only a great sounding room for these events, but beautiful rooms and atmosphere for a wonderful night or weekend away..

This is the fifth time I've seen Tommy James and he never fails to deliver a first class show. I actually didn't like this type of music when I was growing up, but about 15 years ago I reluctantly attended an "oldies" show where Tommy James was one ofthe acts. Since that time I can't get enough of his music and superb vocals. His music takes me back to a simpler, happier time, even if just for one night. Penn's Peak is a wonderful venue and this concert especially seemed to have an energy from the crowd that surpassed previous shows. Met some wonderful people, of all ages, who enhanced the experience.

I always enjoyed the songs in the Tommy James catalog and was really excited to get to see this "legend" perform at a venue not far from my home. I've seen other shows at Penn'sPeak (Dave Mason 2 times, Get the Led Out, America and a few others) but the sound at this concert was not up to par. Tommy's voice seems to have held up well over the years, but he was overshadowed most of the night by an overly loud and at times shrill sound system. He sounded like "old times" when he performed an acoustic version of "I Think We're Alone Now", but when the band was playing, it was as though they were trying to fill a stadium and not the relatively small Jim Thorpe venue. And its not my age, I go to many shows at many different sized indoor and outdoor venues. This one "hurt". I was hoping for a wonderful good old rock and roll experience, but at times I didn't even recognize the lyrics or the song. I still love his songs but will stick to hearing them on my home and car stereos.

We saw Tommy James 2 years ago and it was much better. Seems like the very loud music was making up for the lack of good vocals this year. He only sang for 1 hour and 30 minutes, very short concert.

Amplifiers were way to loud for the venue (Penns Peak, Jim Thorpe, PA). As such, we had a hard time hearing the words to the songs! Three other couples were with us; all said the same thing. We saw them two years ago at the same venue and they were great!
