David Byrne was able to capture the energy, enthusiasm and electricity of the 1980's Talking Heads as much as the effusive, eclectic and ebullient Byrne of the 90's and beyond. His reportoire of music was wide and far-reaching and he celebrated himself being reinvented numerous times through the 90's and beyond. David Byrne made it fun fun to be at CMAC. With three full encores, this was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Having been to Woodstock '69 along with numerous Who, Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Joe Cocker concerts among others, David Byrne' s concert at CMAC was really quite amazing. An event that was not to be missed.

I first heard Ani Difranco perform at an open mike at Nietzsche's. (Ah, Nietzsche's, where no matter who you are you re never outa place.) I hadn t gone to hear her; I d never heard of her. I went to hear a friend sing Irish ballads while accompanying himself on the autoharp. I got there early and already on mike was a young woman singer accompanied by an upright bass player. From her introductions I learned that the songs she was singing were her own. The songs were powerful poetry, a tumbling rush of words. She had a strong voice; she played a mean acoustic guitar. She was, I learned that evening, eighteen years old. I remember thinking at the time, She s better than anybody else in this room. Hell, she might be better than anyone else in town. I was to hear her perform many more times after that as A-twin* Dale soon took over her management. I ve long thought that a large part of Ani s success was due to her work ethic. We ve all known lotsa talented people whose talent alone got them nowhere. Ani took her talent out on the road. She toured endlessly starting with coffee houses and college campus gigs. She broke first in Canada where the distances between gigs are huge and the travel is arduous. As her star ascended the size of the venues she played and the number of musicians joining her on stage grew proportionately. It was great fun watching her grow and change. And then, right around the time she became national phenom I, for various reasons not the least of which was an unhappy parting with Dale as her manager, stopped attending her performances. So when she opened for David Byrne earlier this month at CMAC I was curious to see if and how she d changed over the years. What we got was rockin Ani. OK, there are no anthems in Ani. The words still tumble like water over rocks in the upper river. But she showed from the moment she hit the stage that she can rock her tunes. Accompanied by a drummer and killer upright base player and Ani drove them like a power trio. Ani has always had major guitar chops and this time out she showed she could play solid rock leads on her acoustic. Absent was the jazzy contralto she d affected on some of the later recordings. Instead we got a big voice strong enough to fill the outdoor arena. And there was no sigh of freaky Ani. Her auburn hair was shoulder length. She wore subdued clothes and little if any make-up. And also notably absent was all that angst that so typified her early songs. Rather she sang about democracy (she s in favor of it), motherhood (she likes it) and Election Day 2008 (she s happy her guy won, oh president Obama it s an honor just to say it, i used to hide my passport now i want to display it. ) I hadn t seen David Byrne since last December. It turned out this was still the same tour, still the same show. Mind you it s a really good show. Singers sing, dancer dance, the singers dance, the dancer play instruments and David himself does all of it. If features most of the songs from Everything That Happens will Happen Today, my favorite CD from last year. I d said before the performance is one of those felicitous places where art and rock intercept. If you care about this sorta thing at all you can still catch the tour although you ll have to go to Europe for most of it this summer. But as Shelley quipped, See something once, why see it again? *A-twin, def.: Astrological twin. A term coined by Dale, oldest and dearest friend, to describe the uncanny agreement on so many subjects and spookily similar tastes of two guys born less than forty-eight hours apart.

David Byrne played a great mix of his new tunes from his latest CD 'Everything That Happens will Happens Today" and the songs that will last forever. At time the dancers vaulted over Byrne while other times just sat in chairs and swung to the music with David. It was a great party that had everyone up dancing in the aisles.

David Byrne, looking cool in summer whites, took the stage by storm. His playing, singing and moves were impeccable. The band, back-up vocalists and three modern dancers brought a new edge to his material. Byrne has a deep well to tap and his "greatest hits" sounded fresh as the day they were recorded. The energy kept rising throughout the two hour set. The audience was on their feet for the encores and wondered how such a great show would end. Byrne did it with the SF Extra Action Marching Band, heating the stage beyond boiling with the song, "Burning Down the House" which left no doubt David Byrne is a rock and roll legend.

From beginning to end this is one of the most memorable shows I've ever been to. I've never been to the Majestic Theater in Dallas, so right as soon as I walked through the front door I was mesmerized. At first, everyone was sitting in their seats listening to and watching David Byrne perform. He is quite the performer too. Him and the dancers were moving non-stop through the whole show. As the show went on though, people would start standing up and dancing in front of their seats. By the end of the show, there were people dancing in the aisles and down front. I saw this as an event only David Byrne could pull off. He brought together all kinds of people from different backgrounds and allowed us to enjoy high art mixed with pop culture.

I've been to hundreds of concerts and shows. All very similar and predictable. All that changed on June 9th. David is truly an artist and musician. 1 + 1 = 3. This was more than a concert and more than a show, it was an immersive experience. Everyone on stage was on the same page and show flowed with a couple of minor interruptions. I've never always appreciated his risk taking but I came away not truly understanding of what i just experienced.

Review title says it all. David Byrne was magnificent. Set list comprised of mainly songs from his great new album, American Utopia, and Talking Heads numbers, some obvious choices, like "Burning Down the House" and "Once in a Lifetime" and not so obvious, like "I Zimbra" and "Born Under Punches." The staging was unlike anything I've ever seen. If you have a chance to see this tour, Go!

If you like David Byrne, this is a must-see! He does everything in a way you never thought of before. The band was completely mobile and in constant motion. He played most of his new album, but even if you didn't know the songs, they sounded like essential David Byrne. The few Talking Heads songs were very well received. The audience was on their feet most of the night.

I have seen David Byrne several times in the past decade or so. His shows are always uniquely staged, a lot of fun and visually engaging. This past show at the Paramount was such a great time. Not only is David amazing to watch, but also the entire band and backup singers were just phenomenal in both their musicianship and stage presence. They were all in constant motion on a sparse stage, but it was emotionally and visually engaging to watch. He performed "Toe Jam" and "Lazy", which are two collaborations he's done with other artist. It was a lovely surprise and made the night special. During the encore, he even pulled out a song from Here Lies Love, which I also loved when it was staged at the Seattle Rep. I left the show with such a great big smile on my face. David Byrne's shows always encourage me to be in a great mood at the conclusion of the night.

Two thoughts: 1) The opening act, Benjamin Clementine can be summed up as Exceedingly talented, highly artistic, but completely unenjoyable. This was 45 minutes of of being strapped to a chair in the Performance Art wing of an underfunded museum. 2) David Byrne, in contrast, showed how to create an entirely mesmerizing experience with nothing but 12 people on a blank grey stage. His music, both old and new, is incredible, as are the musicians. The choreography was incredibly intricate and never repetitive, and the lighting was inventive and put to great use. The use of automated follow spots for each performer created an extremely interesting effect! Loved every minute of it (the main act. :-)

The production is ground-breaking. The musicians first rate, and choreographed meticulously; the set design simple but stripped of all the accoutrements of a rock show. No cords, no Marshall stacks, no drum kits nailed to the floor. Empty space wonderfully lit and filled by a spry 65 year old and around a dozen young musicians all dressed in silver/grey. The setlist is heavy on the new album but also chocka with Heads tunes from Fear Of Music and Tongues. A terrific entertainment in all aspects but one: the audience. I saw Talking Heads on their first UK tour in May 77 supporting the Ramones. Then, I was happy to stand shoulder-to shoulder on a beer-sticky student union floor with a crowd of a thousand intent on pogoing themselves into delirium. The price of admission was probably $2 or $3. Last night I paid $130 plus all the extras for a theatre seat and felt ripped off by the encroachments of all and sundry. Obese, inelegant hipsters and their constant need to wave their cell phones in front of my face. It was as if they were only capable of animation when some tune from their moronic years jolted them into action. It insulted the care and calibre of this show. Perhaps my tolerance of people has gone the same way as my hair and urinary stream, but I might have preferred to see this terrific creation in the comfort of my own home, on a big screen, filmed by the likes of Jonathan Demme.

Our seats were in the front row of the balcony and unfortunately the sound mixing or speaker placement made the bass notes of the drums and guitar incredibly loud, drowning out most of the other instruments and vocals. I got a copy of his latest album with the purchase of a concert ticket and listened to it a few times, liking some songs more than others. Seeing him perform the music live gave it a new dimension. His use of marching band style was unique - and fit well with songs from the 80's. I love how he mingled with his co-performers, letting their presence & efforts be put on the same level as his own. The staging was simple, elegant and allows one to see the concert as a blend of music performance and performance art. Just when you think everything that could possibly be done for lighting & staging - then his show comes along to prove that a selective, strong visual concept can beat a battalion of fog machines, fire, and strobes & spotlights shone into the audience. The concert starts out with a gray background, and he and the performers that join him on stage at various points are dressed in light grey suits with bare feet. At one point a performer places a very strong light in the middle front of the stage, and the use of shadows that shrink & explode in size as they huddled together and gathered in new groups when they moved across the stage was cool. For another song a bright light shone on one side of the stage from behind the beaded curtain, and it looked like a bright TV screen. At the end of the song he returns to it and appears to have umped into the TV. What a fantastic return to the stage - bravo David!

This was my first time seeing David Byrne perform in almost twenty years; I had only ever seen the former Talking Heads leader one other time, at the famous First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis. I'm not sure why there was such a huge gap in between my seeing him perform, because he's absolutely great at it, and a really sweet guy offstage besides. So this event had significance to me. Plus, this time I brought along my older brother and best friend, neither of whom had seen David before; my brother has been a Byrne fan since the first Talking Heads album was released in 1977. I'm happy to report that not only did the concert meet our expectations, it surpassed them entirely. Byrne is one of the most innovative thinkers in rock; the man isn't content to just stand there and sing--this performance had a great deal of dance involved, and was done so in a way that none of us had ever seen anything remotely like it before. Along with David, his eleven-piece band were entirely independently mobile--each member (excluding two dancing backup singers) were strapped with a musical instrument; from a keyboard to a bass guitar. What was really cool were the members who made up what would have been a traditional drumset. At least four were carrying a drum and cymbal of some kind; as well as other percussive instruments, some rather exotic. They did so while marching and dancing in lockstep with David throughout the evening, without ever losing a beat, perfectly in sync with each other and the complex rhythmic demands of the music. And then there was the staging--the stage itself was framed by thousands of thin chains, stretching from the overhead lighting rig to the floor, which allowed the musicians to appear and disappear by slipping through the metallic curtain from song to song. It was a cool visual effect, and a deceptively simple one. Watching David move around to the often world music-inspired funk of Heads classics like "Slippery People" and "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" was great. Vocally, he was dead-on. Now 66, David still looks like a young man (he certainly moved and sang like one). Only his shock of white hair indicated his true age. It was a fantastic performance, and my brother, friend and I all agree that it's likely to become one that we'll measure other concerts by in years to come. Unfortunately, opening act Benjamin Clementine wore out his welcome fairly quickly. While possessing a full-range voice and good piano skills, the performer's nearly hour-long set was utterly destroyed by his overdoing everything, including his vocalizations (endlessly wailing two-word phrases like "Turkish Boy!" dozens of times while trying to assemble a mannuequin of a small boy for more than ten minutes is not entertaining in the least, not even in the clearly 'avant-garde' way the performer intended). Obviously inspired by the late singers Nina Simone and Klaus Nomi (the latter especially when he hit the high notes), as well as more contemporary stylists like Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, Clementine kept his head down under an almost comically large cowboy hat while he sang and plunked away on a grand piano while an unnamed accomplice triggered monotonous disco loops and played bass off to the side. It was a strange choice for an opening act, but this guy was picked by David himself, not randomly placed there by some executive suit, so we made sure to get there early to give him a chance. Clementine gets some points for trying to be original, but generally his seven-song set was a major endurance test for many in the audience; where I sat in the lower balcony, I could see people either getting up to prowl the lobby or just watch it all unfold with a look of horrified fascination. There were a few in the audience who liked what he did and loudly voiced their approval from time to time, but they were very few and far between. Like anything, it all comes down to personal taste. David's performance more than made up for the disappointment of the opening act, and that's all that really mattered to us.

Wasn't sure what to expect . Bought the tickets before the music release, or seeing any video of the show . Haven't had an opportunity to see David since '84 . Loved the Heads, best band in its' era . I wasn't sure if the whole drum line thing would be a distraction . I just wasn't sure if it could carry interest for the whole show . As a matter of fact, it did . FANTASTIC SHOW . Everybody was out of their seats by the third song . And by the fourth or fifth song, David had to take a moment of pause . It was evident he was overwhelmed by the audiences reaction . Good set list . Good mix of songs . Great sound . Even greater Lighting . The light show even got applause\u2026. who ever did the lighting deserves an award . The opener was good, maybe great, but a bit Avant guard for my choice . Strong voice, lots of talent . Even funny .

The visual (unique set piece of a string curtain stage perimeter outline) lighting and heart pounding clear sound contributed to the totality of this performance. Abundant energy was expended by the twelve piece band that accompanied Byrne. The mobile drum corp reminded me of Paul Simon's use of South American percussion on Rhythm of the Saints. Byrne danced, played guitar and stayed in motion for the entire two hour show. Two encores but audience wanted more! Byrne certainly lived up to his reputation with a blend of new songs and Talking Heads classics. Not surprisingly, the Talking Heads songs were greeted with a devotee's roar of approval. 'Burning down the house' & 'Once in a Lifetime' were masterfully recreated but this fan would have LOVED to hear 'Life during wartime' as well, especially with American politics in the current state of turmoil. Over all an enthusiastic thumbs up! The opening act - Perfume Genius - not so much.

Those lyrics ring true as it was a once in a lifetime concert experience. A combo of concert, Broadway show, dance show, and creative artistry all wrapped up into one. A not to be missed experience that only the genius of David Byrne could create. Thank you to the FM Kirby Center booking personnel because you hit a grand slam with this show. The Kirby is now the great showplace of NEPA!

This was my first time seeing David Byrne in concert, and I was totally unfamiliar with St. Vincent. The show was great with its fantastic strangeness. The odd brass ensemble turned out to be a perfect accompanyment. I expected a good show from David Byrne after hearing from others who had seen him, but found I enjoyed St. Vincent just as much. Her nickname of Genghis Barbie is well earned! I would definitely see them again.

one of the best show's I have had the pleasure of being at. I have been in love with David Byrnes music since I was 13 and never thought I would be able to see him in concert. He is a true artist. St. Vincent was also incredible. I knew of her before she made this album with David but after this concert I'll be checking out her more of her music. The entire band was also excellent.. Lots of energy. I was never bored. If I could relive this night over and over again I would

Anyone whose David Byrne education stops at the Talking Heads probably can't appreciate what a musical savant he is. I'm pretty sure he feels music as a 3-dimensional entity and his concert production, though very simple and basic, fills the stage with so much pure talent you'll never miss the high tech gadgetry and light show of other tours. This is musicianship at its best, and Byrne's partnership with St. Vincent is sheer genius. Annie Clark (St. Vincent) is so quirky and funky and really embodies a modern version of the image Byrne created in the '80's. She rocks on the guitar with ethereal vocals that partner nicely in duets with Byrne but I was most impressed by the brass band that backed up the whole production with a rich sound and even richer dance moves.

Difficult to convey the experience. After all these years, finally got a chance to see David Byrne live. St. Vincent (Annie Clark) provided a sharp and immediate and equally cerebral balance to Byrne's energy. I cannot recommend it enough. A wall of sound, like a tsunami, rose up and cascaded over the audience. Will be back to see hem again in July!

as a long time talking heads fan i wasnt gonna pass up the opportunity to see david byrne again no matter who he was playing with. the fact he was playing with st vincent was just the cherry on top. i've seen both multiple times in mostly festival settings, so to see them both in such an intimate theatre was a real treat. the set list was perfect blending classics and bsides from each artists personal catalog with hits from their latest duel effort. byrne and clark would trade the spotlight on their own songs and share it on others, but it was mostly clark who was out front in the lights with byrne happy to dance in the back and pull the strings. it really was a great combination of artists. cant recommend this one enough. ps. i drove three hours to this show from oklahoma. you can make it...

Very theatrical and entertaining...in true David Byrne style! St. Vincent was so full of energy and railed on the guitar. The horns were fantastic! The sounds they made ranged from marching band to classical to new wave keyboard, unbelievable!

The Berkeley locals might not realise how good it gets with outdoor venues. I've been to several over the years and my favorite for sound quality and atmosphere is The Greek Theatre. David Byrne continues to evolve and suprise. This was a fantastic show. Devotchka opened up - with haunting acoustics.

Expect to be moved, to be moving, and to feel constant astonishment. The opener, Benjamin Clementine is not to be missed. Imagine a gentler Nina Simone, and you kind of almost get the vibe. He plays piano and signs, and there's a guitarist/electronic musician as well. Intensely political, and personal, his voice soars and crashes. David Byrne is joined on a sparse stage with 11 other musicians/performers, who are in motion about 95% of the time. Expect a good mix of Talking Heads' as well as solo stuff from all eras of David. You will find new meanings in the music, and be transported into the world David creates through his songs....or you'll be shaking your booty to the funky sounds! Not to be missed!

Amazing show by David Byrne and the band. Every song was performed as if it was it's own minimalist music video. Also enjoyed the opening act, clear-voiced and quirky Benjamin Clementine. I was seated second row of the balcony, center and the sound was too loud and too thick in the lows and low mids for the venue, in my opinion. (Bring hearing protection!) A clearer mix would have improved an already amazing and ground-breaking show.

The opening \u2018band was unbelievably horrible. It was not even justifiable on any level. David Byrne was good but didn t play nearly enough talking heads songs. The majority of the concert was American Utopia which may be fine for some people but considering we only got the cd because we bought tickets to the show, I feel it was more about getting people to listen to that than play songs people wanted to hear.

In almost 20 years of going to shows, probably over 400 shows, this was the best show I ve ever been to. Almost half of the set was made up of Talking Heads songs, the stage set up was energetic, innovative, just incredible. This was my first time seeing Byrne and I cried tears of joy throughout and danced my butt off! Amazing experience, not to be missed!

I will keep this short. The show was great, visually unique, the Talking Heads songs were as fresh as they ever was. But then DB ruined the whole show because he just couldn t help himself and had to get political on the last song. I don t know what it is with these artists, they can t even go an hour and a half without spewing their political views. Most the audience just stood there in disbelief and disappointment after escaping their daily lives for just a bit. It just stops making sense that people can t even see a concert without politics ruining it anymore.

Truly amazingly stage show. The lighting and choreography are incredible. His backing band is tight and extraordinarily talented. Byrne is in fine voice too. Absolutely, positively one of the finest performances I've ever witnessed, and I've witnessed quite a few. The show was visually stunning and imaginative. David looked fabulous and moved like a 25 year-old exhibiting high-energy and stunning execution in his trademark moves and dances. The stage set was spare but was beautifully engineered and manipulated. The 11-piece band was on its feet for the entire show -- there were no wires or speakers visible at all, and the band members' instruments were visually interesting and technically fascinating. Tremendous percussion ensemble, amazing keyboardist, talented dancers, wide-open female guitarist . . . I can't say enough. It was like a marching band on steroids. David and the band appeared to be having a terrific time, and seemed truly impressed and grateful for the overwhelming showing of love. The venue, services and entertainment were absolutely perfect. A+++

David Byrne was outstanding from the opening note to the encore! Includes new original material as well as Talking Heads classics. The show was high energy and choreographed to keep you engaged. Even when I didn't know the song I was still enjoyed the show by watching the choreography. I must say I did not care for the opener at all, he was off key a lot and was even screaming at one point. Very avant garde. Others may have like it, but I did not. The openers are not the same for each show and they were all hand picked by Byrne. David Bryne does not start until about 8:45, so don't worry if you are running late. There is no break once he comes on, he plays for about 2 hours and there were 2 encores.

what a treat and a unique opportunity to see live an icon from decades past I am a product of the 80s and talking heads was one of my all time faves. I never saw them. after all this time to see DB was awesome. he was awesome. looked great. simple sleek staging and a completely wireless show so the band itself was choreographed and moved all around and each song was different. everyone was up on their feet dancing the night away. the show was long and fulfilling. definitely worth seeing.

An amazing evening with a truly creatively gifted artist. From the opening of the show, with a blank stage...no amps, no instruments, no cables, wires or cords...the music was the event. Barefoot, and in fine-tuned coordination with an 11-piece ensemble, David had the crowd on its feet the entire evening. Expect the unexpected. Expect to be amazed. Six percussionists laying down African and Latin beats, three vocalists, bass, guitar and keyboard...all wireless, and precisely choreographed.... one body with 12 appendages. Revved up versions off his current album, scattered with his most recognizable songs from the past. The crowd roared in support and appreciation. David and the musicians reciprocated with their energy, joy, and two standing encores.

David Byrne's Utopia tour is AMAZING! Yes, I'm yelling with all caps. All of his quirkiness, innovation, showmanship, and rock mastery are on display and honed to perfection. Everything comes together here--his latest album, his Talking Heads hit, and his solo hits, so you will not be disappointed. Byrne and his ensemble perform everything with movement, dance, and song for nearly 2 hours without stop. The entire audience was up and dancing the entire concert. I am planning a trip to see the show again.
