Spring Awakening (NY)

Spring Awakening (NY)

Spring Awakening is a deaf accessible show that is signed in ASL simultaneously with speech. Deaf patrons seeking to understand through sign would best be served by a seat with a center view of the stage rather than a seat with close proximity to the stage.Spring Awakening is the story of two star-crossed lovers: the brave and brilliant Melchior and a beautiful, young, deaf girl named Wendla. The musical follows this turn of the century Romeo and Juliet as they learn how to communicate, and how to love, in a world that’s trying to keep them apart.

I went on the last Thursday. I came from France to see them. It was a real pleasure. All actors came at the end and took the time to sign the Playbill. It was fantastic. Really moving. All actors are stars and I hope we'll see them soon again. Thank you.

This production of "Spring Awakening" was the best I have ever seen. Director, Michael Arden (also a talented actor/singer) is a brilliant director. His staging, choreography, use of his actors - both deaf and hearing - was magnificent. The American Sign Language was used in such an integral way that it was a choreography unto itself. This beautiful and emotional production had the audience on its feet and cheering. This is a production that I will never forget. Everyone who loves live theater should see this memorable show. Bravo to Michael Arden, his cast and his creative team.

I've seen the original Broadway cast of this show and I must say, I love this version even more. It was simply breath taking. Many of the actors have never heard music and they performed the best musical I've ever imagined. I hope they release a cast recording!!! Chills!!!!

I was so happy to find cheap tickets to a show I had fallen in love with several years ago. A friend of mine was visiting from out of town, and I was eager to experience the show for my second time, her first. Nowhere on any summary, disclaimer, or confirmation before purchase browser did it say "in sign language." Had I known, I would have absolutely chosen a different show for my friend's visit to the city. Imagine watching a sex scene while there is a shadow actor in the corner speaking for the characters. Never in my life have I left a show at intermission, but unfortunately this show required it. Truly disappointed.

An amazing production that should not be missed. Thought the first production of the Broadway play was powerful. This production exceeds all expectations. Must be seen by anyone who has an appreciation for the theater. All parents should see it. The production will make anyone with a child consider the messages that we give our children and the high cost of unfair expectations and not letting an adolescent live and enjoy his and her life. Masterful production from beginning to end.

I went into Spring Awakening expecting a great show, but in reality it was the best production I have ever seen. The directors, designers, and actors all made choices that brought new depth to the story. The addition of sign language created such a strong emotional force to the piece that had me in tears at some points. It's been a couple days and I am still analyzing everything from the show because everything that went on that stage was there for a purpose that varied from social commentary to basic human emotions and more complex themes like how adults do more harm than good by trying to keep their children innocent.

I saw this production last year at a small theatre in Downtown LA and I will move mountains to get to New York to see it on Broadway! Saw this in LA before it moved to Broadway. I loved the original, but this improved on it in so many ways: choreography was amazing, having some of the characters deaf and using ASL really illustrated the communication problems between the kids and adults, and havis play the instruments was brilliant. My boyfriend and I had the chance to see Spring Awakening this past weekend. This is a show that means so much to us! He has been in it twice and it is the reason we met, so we try to see it any chance we get. The fact that it involved deaf actors also was a big reason we wanted to see it (we have close friends who are deaf). This was the most amazing show we have ever seen. The set, the music and the actors were incredible! It was such a moving performance that brought us to tears! The way all of the actors and ASL were incorporated into the show was fascinating! I have never seen anything like it! It was beautiful. If you get a chance to see this production, DO IT! You will definitely regret it if you don't! :)

I'm not even sure how to start. This show was amazing and unforgettable! it was all in ASL(Anerican sign language) but if anyone was to see it and can't sign, That is okay because they had interpreters and captions. I would do not take any children to see this show. It's more of an 18+ , since it is about children. Discovering their sexuality and it can be come "vivid". This is also a great way to have some exposure to the deaf culture if you had never really been involved.... Go see it before they take it down.

So. Much. Awesome! This was my second time seeing Deaf West Theater's production of Spring Awakening, and when it starts its national tour, I have no doubt that I'll go see it again. Yes, it's that good. Spring Awakening already tells a story of communication - or lack thereof - between coming-of-age teens and their parents, etc. in ultra-conservative, 1890's Germany. That, alone, makes for a powerful story, which is masterfully told by the entire cast. (It's worth noting that this production marks the Broadway debut of each and every cast member. Impressive! The show also features the first-ever actress in a wheelchair. I love seeing such inclusivity!) If you understand the history of the Deaf community, the story of communication becomes even more powerful. At roughly the same time as the play is set, a group of hearing educators set out to ban the use of signed language among deaf students, insisting, instead, that they be taught using oralism. A debate still exists regarding the best way to educate children who are deaf, and parents of deaf children (most of them who are hearing themselves; 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents) struggle to know what is best. Even when children learn American Sign Language in school, their parents often do not, crating a communication void in the home. Many facets of everyday life are challenging for people who are Deaf in a very hearing world. With that in mind, so many elements of the story take on a deeper meaning. In an early scene, Moritz Stiefel (Deaf) is called out by the teacher to recite lines in Latin. He attempts to voice the lines and is mocked by the teacher. Inexcusably, this still happens today. Later, when Stiefel tries to talk to his father about his struggle in school, he is chastised and told he's a disappointment. To me, this underscores the ongoing lack of understanding that often exists between Deaf students and hearing parents. The character Wendla has no idea where babies come from. Deaf children also often struggle to learn important life lessons, largely due to the communication gap in the home. I could go on, but who likes a spoiler? ;-) The production beautifully blends spoken and signed language throughout. Each Deaf character has a spoken-language actor as a counterpart. The stage is small, but the space is expertly used. Overall, the production is visually stunning. I suspect many (most?) among the hearing audience members come to the show without a knowledge of Deaf history, but are curious to see how Deaf actors are integrated into a musical. While I wish I felt like more people understood this production on a deeper, Deaf culture-related level, that the production has done as well as it has shows how Deaf West Theater is accomplishing its mission of building bridges between the Deaf and hearing worlds. Bravo! I am proud to support Deaf West Theater, and consider myself lucky to have such an amazing theater company here in my hometown of Los Angeles.

Spring Awakenings with Deaf West Theater is a special, amazing, mind blowing, and intense musical with both Deaf and hearing actors/actresses. Every scene was so coherent with each other. Both of the hearing and Deaf actors/actresses did a very amazing job of voice interpreting and signing their lines during every scene. I do recommend this Deaf musical to be on national tour to promote the importance of Deaf Talents. I give it a 5 star review! I'm so thankful I had to see this Deaf musical this past Saturday! Let's see this Deaf musical become a success! Future Deaf actors and actresses need to see how amazing this Deaf musical is and try out for future Deaf musicals. This was an amazing show put on by Deaf West theater!! Choreography with Deaf and hearing actors was VERY IMPRESSIVE. Albeit the use of sim-com did lead to some vagueness with understanding the signing and if you aren't sitting in the balcony seats then you will likely miss parts of the show. Other than that the Deaf actors/actresses were INCREDIBLE and the hearing actors signing while singing was an impressive feat. Spring awakening has always been my favorite musical bar none. Seeing it in this light however transformed it, it was new and fresh and overall flawless. It is so powerful to see people with limited range on their senses (it's a difference from the imposed normality, not a disability) acting and performing on the same platform as everyone else. I saw the original production of Spring Awakening and was blown away by it, so was thrilled with the idea of a revival. The hearing and deaf actors were seamlessly integrated and the signing was gorgeous - part of the choreography. It is a compelling story, beautifully told. This revival of the Tony award winning musical, is significantly better than the original. The combination of sign language along with some characters being played by 2 actors/singers works beautifully, as the pair of actors interact as actual and conscience or as outer and inner selves. This version also has reduced the over miking and ear splitting band for something slightly subtler, but still rock. And the score appears more lyrical because of the toning down. In fact the band has been moved up the back wall a la American Idiot and it works quite well. The case is extremely even, no one overpowering anyone else, although special notices will be given to the two women playing Wendela. The story line also seems to be more concise in this version. The few downside moments are the song F*cked, which still is an odd duck for style (this time it is presented as a separate rock concert piece), Camryn Manheim's performance, which is a bit forced at times, but she is being asked to play multiple parts with differentiation, and the length of the first act, which runs about 10 minutes longer than is comfortable.

Spring Awakening is one of my most favorite musicals. I was so happy to see the closing night performance of this revival while I was in NYC for BroadwayCon. Michael Arden and DeafWest put together a terrific production of this musical. Spencer Liff incorporated the sign language into the choreography seamlessly. All of the performers were great and the energy was high all night reaching a peak during "Totally F**ed." Beautiful closing speech at the end given by Michael Arden and Steven Sater. Great way to end a NY trip.

This was one of the most moving shows I've seen. It was my first time seeing Spring Awakening, and I'm so glad I was introduced to it with this production. The integration of ASL into the performance added so much depth to the material, and the choreography was absolutely beautiful. The entire cast was so talented, I was blown away by how many of them were making their Broadway debut. It definitely stuck with me for days after seeing the performance, and I still can't stop listening to the cast recording of the original production. I can't wait for this to go on tour next year, I will definitely see it again!

I had never been to a broadway play and this was my introduction to any sort of show on broadway. I will definitely go on to see more shows because this one was AMAZING. My boyfriend is a huge fan of Spring Awakening and was a bit weary by the fact that the musical would include deaf and mute actors, so we were a bit confused in terms of how the musical would be carried out. It was whimsical, honest, beautiful, and so much more. The deaf performers had speaking counterparts that acted as their sort of conscience, which added a whole new dynamic nature to each character. My boyfriend and I agreed that this added so much to the original musical. Also, each and every performer was on stage the entirety of the musical, including the orchestra, providing an odd intimacy and creativity in terms of props. I laughed, I cried, I clapped, I was spellbound by how much I enjoyed this musical and I really hope to see it again in the future.

Absolutely an amazing closing night. The audience seemed to have all seen and love the show! Extremely long applause and standing ovations. A truly beautiful memory to keep with me for all time. Can't wait until the tour in 2017!

Last Friday (1/22/16), I got home in time before snow blizzard hit NYC! The Broadway show-- Spring Awakening was not what I expected at all. I don't know about sounds, but this show was beyond my expectations! I'm so glad that I got to watch this show before Sunday 1/24/16 (their last performance in NYC)! Choreography, lighting, set design, costumes, characters + actors / actresses, interpreting, degrees of sign language, and the story. Dramatic. Emotional. Funny. Two thumb ups! 5 stars! I'm so happy that this show made it to the White House and be part of NYC Broadway shows! You must watch it! It's really rare to see a Broadway show in ASL like that. I don't think I can watch a Broadway show that I have to request a sign language interpreter because it's just not same as this show.

It was such an incredible production, the way they incorperated sign language was amazing, and the way they really made you use all of your senses incorperating vibrations and smells along with the visuals and music. Not to mention the acting was spot on. I cried through the whole thing, in the best possible way.

This amazing production took it to another level tonight. Ovations at every song and an incredible standing ovation at final curtain call that only ended because director Mochael Arden took up a microphone and gave his thanks followed by a very emotional speech by writer Steven Sater that saw more then one cast member succumb to emotion. It is hard to imagine that anything like this can ever happen again on Broadway. I am just thankful to have seen it start and finish

it was interesting how they had deaf people who possibly do not have verbal language perform in a Broadway play. The audio for a hearing person was poor. I could not understand most of the sung lyrics. For me, the story was cute but juvenile. The deaf people in the audience LOVED it. that made me feel the show was worth putting on -on Broadway.

This was a great event! I was so grateful to get the chance to see this show before it closed, because it was absolutely stunning. The choreography was breathtaking with how the ASL was incorporated in the performance, and I loved how accessible this made the show. My seat was affordable and close enough to the center to have a good view of the whole stage. Being far back did make it harder to see the signing, but the affordability made it worth it. Additionally, having the mezzanine seat actually gave a better view of the upper level of the stage that was unique.

I was surprised at how much I liiked the production and how the use of signing actors made the show better in some ways adding a new level of choreography.

I found the show highly enjoyable. However my wife thought it was so, so. I do not like to read a lot about a show prior to seeing it, just enough to decide whether or not I want to go. So when the performers started with sign language I was surprised. The effect was welcomed, not a distraction, just the opposite. Not all, but many of the performers were so adept and fluid with their signing that it added another dimension of expression conveying more of the emotions felt by the character, enhancing the experience. The story line is as timeless as any of the classics.

I couldn't decide whether to see this or not - I thought the signing during the show would be distracting. Boy was I wrong! Every performer was wonderful. The sign language was part of the choreography and added so much to the show. And the music was perfect. I highly recommend you see it before it's gone!!

I went in with no expectations, as I was not a fan of the original production (or the score). What a revelation this production is! The beauty of the sign language and other movement is breathtaking. The acting and vocals are transporting and heartbreaking. The direction finds every nuance in the lyrics and script. This is a rare treat and not to be missed.

Truly one of the most unusual and powerful productions I've ever seen. They've incorporated deaf actors and deaf history seamlessly into an already fabulous musical that adds layer upon layer of meaning. The acting, lighting, choreography, set design etc were all phenomenal. A spectacle worth watching. 10/10 would recommend.

Using deaf actors made this production mesmerizing and much more poignant. The actor in the wheelchair was terrific.

Sorry - previous review sent in error : I admit to having some reservations about seeing this version of Spring Awakening especially since the original show was one of my all time favorites - boy was I wrong! The current production is brilliant. Under the deft direction of Michael Arden and choreographer, Spencer Liff this show has been elevated to another stratosphere. Watching the actors sign much of the dialogue is akin to watching an intricate and moving ballet. Overall, the entire cast turned out an unforgettable performance that will live on. BRAVO!!!!!

The only negative part of the play was the Sim-Com. It would have been better to have more shadowing.
