Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock

Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, recei.

The show with the other musicians playing their hearts out along with Herbie was nothing short of amazing! However, in my humble opinion along with my fiance, an amazing singer in her own right, felt the show was too much improvisation, fusion and synthesizer for our taste. We feel Herbie should have spread himself out a bit more with some of the music from his past, more melodic, more jazz, more funk, more for the older generation as the audience consisted of all age groups from 16-80, just more variety next time.

Spectacular night at the Hollywood Bowl. Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang dueling it out on the pianos was unforgettable. And the LA philharmonic is outstanding. This is part of what living in Los Angeles is all about. Would highly recommend that everyone experience the Bowl. Brought my 15 year old daughter and 10 year old son as well. Thought they would be bored but they loved it.

herbie hancock and lang lang both delivered expert performances, but spent a little too much time showboating. rhapsody in blue was an incredible song to finish with, but did they really need 10 solos each in between interludes?

the overall is good. it's my first time to enjoy a rather classical music in Hollywood bowl. the sounding is not that good because it's outdoor. the LA Phil was awesome and herbie and lang lang are I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E. they both had solo and i like them, they tried playing chinese tunes mixed with jazz bu i think they are better when they played individually. they also played some improvisation and I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! looking forward to lang lang's recital in walt disney hall in Nov.

I had a general idea of what this recitial was going to be like, but it exceeded my expectations. I liked the mix of Jazz and Chinese music that the two played, but what awed me the most was undoubtly Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue". It is such an amazing piece, and I thought the two played it wonderfully. Overall, this event was a lot of fun, and for those who can still come tonight, I recommend it!

Talent personified!! Lang Lang' style and showmanship easily stood up to Herbie's. The solo mini-set done by Herbie dragged a bit but Lang Lang's was gorgeous and clearly connected with the audience. Herbie would have done well to perform a selection of his more recognized material - he did Cantaloop but just as a theme in and out of his other selections. The second half of the show was clearly the best half - Rhapsody in Blue with Lang Lang and Herbie Hancock at dueling pianos! Fantastic! The encore was again a bit of duelingpianos without the orchestra but still entertaining.

Nothing says summer in LA like a night at the Hollywood Bowl. It was such a beautiful night that I would have been happy to hear almost any musician. But Herbie Hancock showed why he was the master. He was funny and gracious. He showed real love for Lang Lang and their collaboration was amazing. It was a real treat to hear his medley of his own songs. I feel lucky to have been present.

Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang were almost tied in their abilities on the piano. Herbie's years of experience was obvious, while Lang's performance was flawless. They went for several minutes, on sheet music, barely reading, but still remembering their place. The philharmonic was. as usual, on point. Strings, winds, percussion, all came in at the right moment. Hurray for the conductor who knew where he was the entire time. I had expected a little different style of classical music with Lang Lang being there, and would have liked to hear how Herbie Hancock handled it, but all in all, it was an event to remember. The weather was perfect, the food was great (we brought in sushi) and the acoustics delivered. Aside from the helicopters flying over now and then, everything could be heard down to the softest flute.

10/2017, Boston. Very nice show and recommended. I was deeply into the first few tunes, but the middle of the show started blurring together, somewhat middle of the road and indistinct. The end of the show got interesting again for me with some amazing keyboard solos. My attention was affected partly by the tiny, uncomfortable seats of the theater (Orpheum) as well as the guy sitting next to me who was browsing his phone during the whole performance, which was very distracting. Glad I got to see Herbie as he's getting up there in years. If you can go, check him out.

I had VIP so I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Hancock after the show. What a gentleman!. I can tell that he loves his fans and is very personable. He had a jazz band so I would have liked to hear a couple of songs from his early records, i.e. Maiden Voyage, etc. However it did not ruin it for me. Another plus is that I am a huge Vinnie Colaiuta fan so it was a treat to have him behind the throne. Overall great concert.

The first half, was long and uninteresting. The audience was lost to music that was not defined in it's direction of where it was going. I felt it was " a cop out" so to speak for the artists to kill time in the first half of the evening because of the huge musical challenge that they faced. The music was totally "impressionist" and was rooted mainly in a pentatonic format. That style of music for the length of time played just dips the listener's ears into a musical abyss. The second half was finally what people paid to hear. Lang Lang started with one of his signature pieces and the evening grew in a musical challenge between the artists. I have to say that Herbie stepped up to the plate in the second half and played quite well.

For me, the tunes played were noisy, the bass was muddy, and the intensity was consistently high. Since Herbie Hancock has been a favorite of mine for decades, I was so excited to be attending this concert. Unfortunately, both my friend and I were hugely disappointed. I love Herbie's voice. In the first hour and 45 minutes, I only recall him singing once. I enjoy the individual performers being showcased and hearing what each of them has to offer, but when that is the bulk of the entire show, no matter how good they are, it becomes old. The majority of the first hour and 45 minutes was like a never ending jam session. I looked at my friend and we decided if the next "song" was more of the same we would leave. I have never before walked out on a concert performance. This was so disappointing that this became a first time for me to leave before a show was over.

Brian Auger once referred to Herbie Hancock as the greatest keyboardist on the planet. I agree. I have never heard improvisatoin like he plays. He has it all - speed, melody, touch, creativity - just when you think he can t take a solo any further, he kicks into overdrive. HIs current band is outstanding, particularly his drummer who is a force of nature. There were times the band produced sounds I had never heard before. On this night, he played new songs as well as ones from as far back as Headhunter, making it a very satisfying show.

While Herbie Hancock is a great pianist, nowadays he seems motivated by greed more than music. His playing at the Balboa theater was showy. There is nothing wrong with electronics or sound experimentation provided they are used sincerely, but Hancock and some of his musicians seem to view those mostly as a wow factor. Drummer Colaiuta played too loud. Guitarist Lionel Loueke distinguished himself by the beauty and originality of his performance.

It was the chance of a lifetime to see one of the masters I studied as a child. Then, to walk into the hall and see the same instrument I own front and center was a thrill. When the performance began, the eclectic group of master musicians showed their skills and innovation. If you came to hear the hits, he didn't disappoint, but they were totally current, totally modern, totally fresh. My only complaint ... I wanted them to keep playing into the night ... they were having fun, WE were having fun, so why not?

McCaw Hall is an excellent venue but I would not recommend this show if you are expecting traditional Herbie Hancock. This was an expression of his "transending limitations" and if you enjoy (extreme) Fusion Jazz, it is as you would expect. See The New York Times review, (August, 2016) for a fuller, more professional review. I learned a lot about myself at this performance and for that I feel enlightened. The one word I came away from that show remembering: "vangardist", and if you are that kind of Jazz fan you will enjoy. He got a standing ovation and calls for encore from the audience in Seattle, 3-1-18. Some people did walk out during the show .

i have seen HH live many times over his career. Each show is unique as is his supporting band. His guitar, bass and drummer were sublime...each with amazing improvisational talent, as was his sax player. His sax player was a wonderful improviser and has excellent technical skill, but i felt he was the weak link in the band. The reason is that he showed little ability towards emotional expression, ability to modulate dynamics, or ability to create melodies. This band is a creative powerhouse, and seemingly effortlessly turns relatively simple selections like Watermelon Man and Actual Proof into 15 minute improvisation platforms. This is a band worth going out of your way to see; but do not expect a greatest hits repertoire of 4-5 minute HH compositions. You would be widely disappointed. But, expect a cutting edge improvisational ensemble with HH giving his all from the mellifluous to the dissonant, often within the same solo.

I have attended several jazz concerts within this past year at the Atlanta Symphony orchestra hall. My most current being Chris Botti and Brian Culbertson which both were OUTSTANDING!!! I have loved Jazz for many years and when I saw Herbie Hancock was coming to Atlanta I immediately got tickets (which by the way were WAY more expensive that the other two artists I mentioned). Herbie's music sounded like a bunch of noise. Almost to the point where I almost left early. But, he only played for approximately 1.5 hours, Thank God!!!

I am not actually that much of a fan but my husband is and this was his birthday present. The show was much better than I thought it would be and by the end I was on my feet with the rest of the audience. Aside from audience members arriving more than 30 minutes late the event was perfect - started mostly on time, good sound and visuals, great interaction between artist and audience, great finale. This last has nothing to do with the show, but FYI I saw the most remarkable thing AFTER the show - a long line to get into the men's restroom! Also, the Symphony Orchestra marketing firm should emphasize taking Marta to events at it facility, as I did. Is there some kind of status attached to waiting in a long line for your car?

This was a most disappointing performance by Herbie Hancock. The orchestration of his jazz compositions almost completely drowned out his own piano. It urned his jazz into something resembling a bad film score. The standard of playing was also poor at times. To think that Herbie once worked with Miles Davis and now has to accept mediocre trumpet playing. The only saving grace of the evening was Gregory Porter whose vocals were strong and who created a fine rapport with the Bowl audience. I've never before attended a performance at the Bowl where half the audience got up and left during the main act. But you couldn't only agree with their course of action.

We took the Hollywood bus shuttle from Culver City. Right away I was happy I was not driving and fighting the traffic to the HBowl. Robert Glasper, who I have been following for many years opened with his sly humor and witty comments which set the tone to playful and his band and music were the same. Very enjoyable. It was Gregory Porter who stole the show. The newest sensation to the mainstream jazz world even though he has been around for twenty years was booming with baritone excellence. He also came out during the main set with Mr. Hancock and sang a song which again brought down the house. What can I say about Herbie and the conductor of the LA Philharmonic symphony except Genius!! It is amazing to see such musicians that have mastered a talent so perfect that they are now legends in their own time.

I wAs disappointed. When i listen to Herbie I usually put on that Jazz Funk and have a fun time. Herbies concert was nothing like that. Herbie Energy in stage reminds me of a james earl jones, very reserved and alot stuffy. Most of the stuff he played i would describe more like modern abstract music. Most of it was slow tempo, 4 songs in a row sounded the same to me. I was pinching myself to stay awake. The music played was overly high brow and sophisticated, the only one of my friends who enjoyed the show was a seasoned guitarists. If you know alot about music you will appreciate Herbie Hancock but if your looking for fun and energy you wont find it at his show.

He is the star & should have been in the middle of the stage. Also camera should have show more of his finger work on piano. That is what so great about Herbie! He is gifted,

Poorest live experience ever. Four extremely talented artists played for over 2 hours and during that time we heard no more then 8 bars of songs we recognized. It was like a jam session for the musicians, nothing for the patrons. Herbie must think people pay to watch him play with his electronic equipment and hear him express his inner feelings. Sorry, these paying customers wanted to hear the songs that made him famous.

Fantastic concert. Great talented band. He played about 10 songs for 2 1/2 hours. Mostly a fusion music. The maestro was at the top of his game!

For some reason the show was not up to par. I did not enjoy this show. I love Herbie Hancock but was not happy with the show. This is the first time I did not enjoy his show. I have been to several of his shows and could not wait for this show, but it was a total disappointment,

High quality entertainment, musicians were amazing. The middle part of the show was a little too slow for my taste but still impressive!

What a treat. World class iconic performance in surprisingly intimate venue. Great sound system. A quartet of all time first string players. Very funky in a good way.

Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore.

I like that Herbie and Friends were not very talkative. They spoke with their music. Everything they performed was from their hearts and souls! A very delightful event!

Not a great night out, the music lacked structure and the precision of a band well practiced together. NOt jazz, nit good electronica, I was really disappointed in the performance aspect of the music, and not the HH that I know from past concerts... very so so.. sadly. Great solo moments from Marcus Miller, Carlos Santana had moments, but was repetitive, the Indian drummer was great but there was no unity... it just did not work.

I was not expecting a "Greatest Hits" performance at all. However, I was very disappointed over all by all the artists as were most spectators in my immediate seating area. There were just too many marquee performers on stage at once and the evening seemed more like a spacey jam session.
