Al Green

With the release of Love Ritual in 2010, soul singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Al Green reminded the world exactly why he so richly deserves legendary status. Featuring a remix of retro hits and rare tracks, Love Ritual is a nostalgic predecessor to his 2008 album Lay It Down, which featured a collection of earthy, soul-infused songs epitomizing his iconic sound from the past four decades. Green's concerts feature a mix of old favorites as well as new, contemporary takes on classics, and fan excitement runs high during his intense, bluesy riffs and highly charged vocal improvisations. Lay It Down spawned a major European tour, with ticket holders thrilling to the singer’s low-and-smoky take on “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” as well as his gospel-powered romance anthem, “Let’s Get Married.

Fabulous show with great energy and lots of great songs!! After about 90 minutes of singing his heart out, Al kept on going telling the audience and his band members that "they haven't sung everything yet" and the he "is having too much fun". He provided a top notch awesome show, and threw tons of roses out to the folks in the first few rows throughout the performance. That man rocked!

Every year I take advantage of the opportunity to see the LEGENDARY Rev. AL Green perform. This summer another Legend was added to the venue; Ms. Etta James. What a treat! The Concert at Chastain Park was wonderful... wouldn't have missed it for the world!

This concert was excellent. Al Green has still got it. He played the old hits as well as new ones. He still knows how to entertain a crowd. I thought he sounded better now then back in the 70s.

This show was simply amazing to see Ms. James perform "At Last" made the hair on my arms stand up. Beyonce sings the song well, however, Etta does a much better performance because she sings the song from somewhere within her soul. Once Rev. Green took to the stage, he had the audience totally captured. To see Rev. Green sing and dance was a treat. In addition to sing the songs with him. This was the best show I've seen in many years and I am in my 50s.

They had the whole crowd out of their seats, dancing along! When Etta sang "At Last," everything went quiet and you could just feel the history that had been and was being made by this moment. Al brought the soul out of everyone!

Etta James and Al Green was just okay, Ms James did a good job. Al Green really sound great, but the choices of songs weren't good. He is ole school and he needed to keep it just that......not gospel either. He touched on some of his back in the day.....I remember this song, but not exactly what I expected!! The concert was as I said before, JUST OKAY.

What can I say? I'm old enough to remember Al when he was just starting out. I saw him years ago. This performance was just as good and as energy filled as when I saw him years ago. As a fact, he has only gotten better. I enjoyed the concert from start to finish. I wasn't ready to leave. I think I was as tired as he was when I left and I didn't perform. He engaged the audience brilliantly. And his choice of music was all I could ask.

Unfortunatley we arrived late and missed part of Etta's performance. Even still I think it was cut short for some reason. Then there was at least a 30-40 time laspe between Etta leaving and Al starting I don't get this. Al performance was great there were alot of "church like" tones kindy of preachy talk but good none the less.

What a FABULOUS night indeed!! Etta got the mood set with her sultry ways and Al took over and brought us on home. The young man next to me laughed when Al first laid on the floor and then when he effortlessly popped right back up and didn't miss a beat...I looked over and saw the amazement in his young eyes. I commented "hmmm, imagine that, you didn't think he had it in him...son, now THAT'S OLD SCHOOL!!!" I kept thinking that if Al had something to prove to someone, well, he sure made that happen tonight. He completely brought the house down when he lit our collective hearts on fire with his wonderful medly rendition of oldies---all of Chastain was singin and swayin to the music much to the delight of each other. What more can I say but----MORE, please, MORE!!

This show was everything I hoped it would be. Exciting! Soul stirring! Thoughtful! Fun! Etta James set the plate for Rev Al by giving us a taste of her legendary 'blues' served with ample amounts of sensual favorites. At 70 plus, she still has her way with audiences and devoted listeners. The Rev. Al Green took the faithful to church and back with his familar and smooth renderings of classics such as "Let's Stay Together", "Love & Happiness" and a few current charts. He preached, he testified, he danced and he lifted us to new heights, leaving the crowd wanting more at the end of his set. In short, I'm glad I experienced these two legends firsthand!

I enjoyed the show - for the most part. I'm not sure if Etta has slipped off the wagon or if it truly is her age, but she didn't seem to be on her game (she nearly sang the same song twice - even dedicating it to the same person). I've seen her three times in the last couple of years so I feel I'm comparing fairly. The part I didn't enjoy about Rev. Green was that he began several old favorites, would sing one verse and then move on. I didn't come to get preached to, I came for the love of his music. All in all, I would not recommend this show to others.

I was MORE than happy with the performace of the main performer. I was a little let down by Etta (one of my favorite Blues Singers) but took into consideration her age. For 71 years old she gave it all she had...LOL On the other hand, Al Green gave a top shelf performance; nothing to complain about regarding him. The man went from the night club songs, to church and back to night club. I could hardly keep up with what he was performing. I loved him and so did the crowd. It was my first time seeing him and would certainly pay to see him do it all again. I hate to admit but I probably would not pay to see Etta if she was the only one on the bill; reirement should be something that she is seriously considering. I have all of Etta's CD's and still enjoy her. Al Green had it going on and his daughters (backup singers) were the BOMB. I would love to hear them doing something totally without Dad; think they may be headliners someday. Thanks for letting me rattle on and on; This was my first show at Chastain but certainly won't be my last... Thanks for having some of the best in the business at Chastain Park.

Whether he was sliding across the stage or singin' his favorites, the Reverend Al Green had the crowd up and singing, and dancing. I have never been so engaged at a concert before in my life. I absolutely love Al Green. He always puts on a great show. His voice is as mellow and sweet as it was in the 70's. And that smile is unforgettable. On the other hand, I was not impressed by Etta James. And maybe I was a little biased by Beyonce's performance of "At Last." But Etta didn't even sound like her very own old recordings. I guess she's led a tough life and it comes through in her voice. Also, she was bit too explicit for me. Last year when Al Green came to Chastain, it was with Michael McDonald and that was an awesome concert from beginning to end. Thank goodness we had food and wine to drown out the sounds and performance of Etta James. But Al Green ROCKS!

Hey, were talking Al Green here. I would have rather heard Al sing Al songs. The show was WAY over-produced. So loud I could'nt hear Al. Wanted to hear Al sing the songs intimately without his side singers doing most of the singing. Al was funny. Voice was as good as ever when I could hear him. Looked forward to seeing Al Green at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, La on 10/6/12. It was a great concert; only problem is that he played one (1) hour and that was the end of the show. He only sang 2 of his original songs; the rest were other artist's songs. I was very disappointed and couldn't believe it when he walked off the stage. I won't pay the price of the ticket to see him again if it will only consist of an hour show and him not singing the songs of his that we waited to hear.

We have a bucket list of great rock, soul and blues bands and musicians and was very happy to find out Al Green is touring again. At times I counted 16 musicians and performers on stage at the Stiefel Theater in Salina which only seats appr 1250. So it was a real treat to see how well Al handled the event, He can still hit the notes that make his songs so memorable. Have been to several concerts this past year and Al is in the top 3. Thanks Al

Based on reviews of his previous shows, I expected to be underwhelmed. I'm so glad to be proven wrong. Al gave a wonderful performance. I heard all of the songs that I wanted to hear and more. Yes, the audience probably did just as much singing if not more than he did, but that was fine. We would have been singing along anyway. Al can still hit those high notes, even if he doesn't hold them as long. The audience got lots of energy and love from Al in a performance that lasted nearly an hour and a half. I left very pleased and happy to have gotten to experience a live performance from one of my favorite R&B singers of all time.

First I want to say that Al Green has an incredible voice and the Green sisters were amazing. The band had real soul. So why am I giving Al a one star? He didn't sing! He avoided singing like the plague. He would start a line and fade out. He would approach the mike then back away doing circles and bowing and throwing out roses to the crowd. The Green sisters carried the load. He performed for about one hour and ten minutes. I payed $78.00 for the ticket. He performed only nine songs! Lots of "I love you Salina." but not a lot of singing. Al admitted having a problem with his voice due to singing outside in Ohio the night before. Really he should have cancelled and refunded people.

It has been a long time since I had that much fun watching an artist like Al Green. I believe he was having so much fun performing for the audience. I strongly believe he is just a kid at heart in a grown man's body. Al started the show by telling the audience he was "stoned". But, he performed each song like the professional he is; even when giving out flowers to the ladies. He kept the audience laughing with his sense of humor. He had an odd sedgeway into each song, but he kept the flow of the show moving. Never a dull moment. I would see him again.

Al Green is a spectacular performer, the band, the backup singers and dancers were all great. The 2 negatives (and why I did not give it 5 stars), the opening act was weak, more like depressing. So excited for months to see Al Green in concert. Listened to his music since a kid when my parents would have parties and they would always dance to Al's music. The first disappointment was his opening act which lasted for 30 mins. She was okay but was a local act that we could go see anytime in a local downtown bar and for $75.00 tickets this was unacceptable. Then Al's concert lasted 1 hr. & 10 mins. which was also unacceptable for the price we paid. He sang cover tunes "Pretty Woman", etc. and the few hits of his that he did sing he sang about half of the song or let the audience or his back-up girls sing while he threw out roses to the front row. Please save your money and listen to his music on CD's. We wish we had done this and not have the memories of his show last evening. Still love Al but the show was a ripoff.

He was amazing!!! This was the first concert I went to by myself. I don't why, but I just wanted to do this one with just me. He did most of the songs that I love, and threw in some snippets of classic R&B and Soul by The Temptations, Four Tops, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke! There were also plenty of funny, and beautiful asides, that made it feel like a room full of close friends! To me, it felt like the theme of his performance that night was... Happiness... Allow Happiness... Open yourself up freely... to Happiness!!! So I'll continue to make that my theme!!

Al Green was everything that we expected and more. He still HAS IT. The concert started ON TIME and was continous fun. The sound was amazing, his singers were great, also the band . But the extra icing on the Al Green Cake was his two young dancers. The were liquid in motion. They moved with the agility of "our" younger days. The concert was something enjoyed by all....young, old....black and white. We rocked each minute. The only con that I can find is the length of the concert. Al could have stayed on stage till dawn. But he came, we saw, and ALL enjoyed. Thank you AL Green...Thank you Hard Rock.

Last night show with Al Green was excellent!!!!! He still has that great sounds today as he did when I first saw him 1975. Last night he sang songs that I have not heard him sing in concerts in a very long time. He is smooth on stage, he engages the crowd and he is a performer!!!!! He not only can do HIS song well but he shows you his range, Sam Cook, Otis Redding. I was still thrilled this morning, I am just sorry I did not get tickets for Saturday's show, and believe me I went on line this morning and they were all sold out. The Whispers were OK, their sound was somewhat drowned out. Al Green should be in his 60's, I've seen him with the best of them, BB King, Little Richard to name a few, But Al Green is standing during his shows no chairs or canes. Al Green your the BEST. I Love your singing, your style and I enjoy each of your performance. Your daughters sound beautiful. MAC

Al still has it, he can sing and move just like he always has. The crowd was a mix of young and old, and not too congested which made it a very pleasant night! The only con was he performed for one hour, wanted to see more. Was a great show overall.

The Reverand Al Green spread lots of 'Love and Happiness' at Edgefield on a balmy Friday night under the stars. A 9 piece band and 4 back up singers and two young male dancers rounded out a show that oozed in soul and love. The only complaint I heard over and over and over: Al only did one 45 minute set. I have never been to a concert so short. It can't be his age; BB King still does 3 hour shows. And he didn't respond to the call for an encore. I hung out near the back stage hoping for an autograph and heard one of the singers from the opening act say he never does encores. So I don't know what is up with all that, but he was still fabulous.

Al Green stood up and delivered, like none-other. The show was a spectacular ride back in time from start to finish...and then he gave us a look into the present....and future as he progressed.

If anyone thinks Al Green is too old to bring it, well they are wrong! He has energy, charisma and still belts it out like nobodys business. His music took be back to my teens, what a great feeling! His songs never get old and his new music is just as good. A true artist. A truly wonderful, amazing and fun show I will never forget. Thank you Al!

Al Green was the Bomb, but Etta James just bombed. She needs to retire completely. I grew up listening to big Al and when I seen he was coming to ATL. I thought this is my last chance to see a legend in person. He did not disappoint! It was the most fun I've ever had at a concert. My wife and I danced in front of our seats most of the night. And just like when I was growing up listening to Al, his music made it easy for me with the woman I was with afterward. I felt like I was 25 again. Awesome, amazing just plan cool! Please bring him back next year!!!!

Al Green was awesome at Lauberge in Baton Rouge.. In the venue that he performed, the stage was extremely hot and small. The crowd wanted more and so did I. His performance was excellent. There aren't many good singers anymore and he happens to be a good one!!! I disagree with the previous review.

Although I was happy to see this legend, he was unable to sing a full set. The concert lasted about an hour. On most songs, he let his back up singers take over. If you save your money in order to attend concerts, you should let this one pass. I did have a good time, because I've always enjoyed Al Greens music.

Lalah and her sultry voice was just what the musical doctor ordered! She showed us yet again what a wonderful talent she is and from what good (Donny Hathaway) stock she was made...Soulful, earthy...She was the perfect opening for the vivacious and still so sexy Al Green! Even in his not feeling 100%, he still gave us a great show. Who knew he had such a great sense of humor! He still sounds the very same as he did when I listened to him many moons ago. Glad I came out to see him!

have seen al green several times, on Friday 10/26/12, I surprised a friend and took her to Westbury Music Fair. Lalah Hathaway was in good form but the band played more than she sang. al Green was very good, could do without the dancers but it was a good set. Could have used 20 more minutes or 4more songs! Love Al Green!!!!!! MUAH

I've seen Al Green 4 previous times including Westbury. He's iconic, can still sing it and has one of the greatest catalogs of music in the business. But there lies the problem... "Pretty Woman"?, 30 seconds snippets of Temps and Four Tops? Cmon! I saw him forget his lines to" L O V E" somes years back at the Beacon so maybe that's why he he's singing covers. He played for under 1 hour, and when he wasn't complaining about his bad stomach and yelling about turning up the AC in the venue, he threw more pink roses than sang lyrics. Sorry Reverend, next time if I want to hear your music when you're in town I'll plug in my iPod.

The Rev. Al definitely did his thing. His voice was as clear and true as ever, his band and his beautiful background singing daughters sounded amazing. My only gripes would be that he didn't sing 'Simply Beautiful'...and that the show was only about an hour long...58 minutes to be exact. We thought Al was joking when he said good night, but quickly found out that the show was indeed over. Overall, however, Al Green was and is still quite the performer and I'd check him out again.

This was my first time seeing Al Green. I have every song he ever sang. He was marvelous. A stunning entertainer. With that being said, I was extremely disappointed with the length of the show. The show started at 8:00 and at 9:10 he was bidding everybody farewell. One hour and ten minutes is what I got for (2) $60 tickets. I still enjoyed the little bit he gave me. I gave it 3 stars because I felt short changed due to the amount of time he performed. If he had given me 30 more minutes, I would have rated it a 5 star performance.

Really enjoyed show! Al kept it going and seemed to enjoy himself, while doing so. My 21 year old daughter went with me (she wasn't sure about going) but she was very impressed with him and the show and was very glad she went. I just wish it had lasted longer even though Al managed to condense a lot of his songs in that 70 minutes.

Al Green was awesome! Loved it when he danced. The stage lighting show was great. I liked that Al Green showed everyone he was human... he introduced his daughters, the band. He sung other artists songs he liked, he let his fans see another side of Al Green ....LOVED THE SHOW!

Al Green was GREAT! You still got it Al!!. I saw Al for the 2nd time on 10/6/2012, he was at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier city, La. (unfortunately those casino shows are short, Al was on for 1hr and 15min, but the casino's want us gambling). Al was feeling good and sounded Great! If his songs don't move you and make you feel good, then you may need some professional help. Thanks Al...GREAT JOB! Hope I can catch you again sometime! Hoopsjumper Shreveport, La.

Along with many other great performers that I have seen in the past Al Green shines through with all of his classic songs. Al looked well sounded even better, you should see him before god takes him. I regret never seeing Ray Charles but I at least can cross off another r&b, gospel and soul star off of my bucket list. He gave out dozens of rose's to the ladies in the crowd. It was a very nice gesture it put him in personal touch with his female fans. He charmed the audience with his respect and love for god. His wit was also appealing in good old rock star fashion when the audience took over one of his songs he stopped singing and asked the audience "So you all know this too! I have two regrets about the show first it was an hour show would have liked more. Second and this is my only criticism of him and others that do the same thing. He claimed ignorance in not understanding what today's r&b/hip-hop stars are saying in their music. This may have been done to relate to his audience better but he is a legend and does not need to go there. I have seen or heard other legendary performers like Screaming Jay Hawkins, Etta James or Stevie Wonder and others embrace the fruits of their efforts and even include some rap or hip-hop on their records. Hip Hop is no longer a new cultural phenomena.

I've loved Al Green since the seventies and was excited to finally get to see him live. It was a big disappointment. Al was on stage for about 50 minutes. During that time he sang bits and pieces of songs. I think he sang one song all the way through. He still has a great voice when he chose to use it, but he spent most of the concert giving out roses to the fans and yelling hellos to the audience in the front and letting the band and his backup singers do most of the music. There was no opening act.

Al Green is a very talented entertainer; however, he did not do himself justice or his audience. One by singing a medley of other folks' songs, and two, cutting the performance to 60 minutes. He should at least have performed HIS own music for 1 1/2 hours - 2 hours as the hotel and box office told the patrons. I was very very disappointed. Not to mention the fact that we had purchased 5 tickets, driven from Baltimore, and stayed overnight. All that extra expense for a less than 1 hour show, never again. At least from what I am hearing, not at the Taj Mahal. I hope this helps you plan for better concerts in the future.

I'm a big Al Green fan, going back 40 years. Nice to see that, at 68, he can still sustain a show. But he does it by doing fragments of the big hits, which he probably has gotten tired of singing thousands of times, and resting up by talking to the audience while the band and back up singers cover for him. It appears, from reading reviews of performances at earlier venues, the spontaneous talk is not that spontaneous. Unless you are an uncritical he can do no wrong fan, you will be a little disappointed. But a good show. Minus the choice of the "Pretty Woman" cover. The opening act, Charles Bradley, is James Brown lite, without the coat, who now and then breaks into a rain dance.

Great to see Al but he did not sing one complete song. His band was completely overpowering. Reduce the volume by half and cut the banter and that is what we came to hear. Disappointing though Al worked hard. He should just sing. He seems to still have it.
