Ween

From joke-rock heroes to experimental weirdos, Ween left no stone unturned in their 25 years of tongue-in-cheek sonic exploration before parting ways in 2012. The band’s cult following dreamed of a reunion, and in late 2015 their wish was granted when Gene and Dean Ween teamed up once again to bring their weird and wild sounds back to stages everywhere. Since the band's return, audiences have eaten up their impressive musicianship, off-the-wall humor, and eclectic catalog of fan favorites like “L.M.

The show started promptly at 7, which was not expected. I was walking through the gates when the first song began playing. So no opening band to lead us in, which is good. However the play time for Ween was way too short. As soon as the gorgeous sunset was over, I was just getting in the groove, but the show ended at 9:15! I paid the same amount for another show coming up this August, and there's an opening band, which tells me that the headliner will go beyond 9. So why couldn't Ween? I was pretty disappointed at the length of the show. I'm old too, but I was expecting at least another hour. This was the first show that I've seen at Thompsons Point, and the tickets were reasonably priced, but I'm also keeping in mind that I paid the same amount for the next show I'm going to, and there will be two bands. I guess I'll be able to make a better review after I can compare th shows, but for now, I wanted Ween to play longer!! Only recommending it for others because how often is it that Ween comes to New England, let alone Portland Maine?

Ween was amazing last night. My head hurts, legs ache, and i still can't hear right. They are the most under-rated and unappreciated band ever. Before you die you should see these guys at least three times. Also, Claude Coleman is out of this world on drums. Spaghett!

It's very rare that a band that can sell out much larger venues and has such a cult following would even play at a smaller place such as the bottle and cork...usually you have to catch those shows when a band is first starting out...luckily ween knows that bar venues are intimate and rowdy and they aren't afraid to downgrade their paycheck with less people in the venue...i'm sure some of it's about money...but after seeing that show i'm sure most of it is about having a damn good time shredding some serious tunes....could possibly be one of the best ween shows i have seen

This concert was ok. I love Ween and I have listened to almost all of their albums but they didn't play a single popular song. They played a lot of their punk songs which I'm not that into. Even my husband who is a die hard fan was disappointed at the music selection. They didn't play Banana's and Blow, they didn't play Gabrielle... etc. There was maybe 4 songs they played that I knew!? So, in all, they played pretty well but their song selection was crap. I wouldn't see them again.

I dunno what to say. First, they were on time with no cover band, which I guess is my fault for not checking, so I was very late. Then, they sell wayyyy too many tickets. There's no room at all to do anything. It's like being stuck in times sq on new years eve-nowhere to go. I can't stand that. Thirdly, I hate idiotic sound guys who think we need to hear bass up the wazoo. All it does is ring around the theater and you can't hear a damn thing unless you're in the front. When are we going to place speakers differently, especially in cacauphanous caverns like Hammerstein. I'll never go to Hammerstein ballroom again unless it's for an opera or something. It's a shame cuz ween is amazing and creative and obviously well-produced if you've heard any of their albums and the sound and atmosphere of at venue really mucks it up.

Excellent experience, awesome setlist. Only minus to the whole trip was the $115 parking ticket we got while trying to figure out where to park (about 20 minutes) and the line to get a drink took me away from the show for too long, but not Gene or Dean's fault at all. Would definitely do it all again, parking ticket and all.

Ween was great. If you like Ween, you will like Ween live. But the Hammerstein messed this show up big time. The show seemed oversold, as the venue was incredibly crowded and the bar quickly ran out of most drinks. The staff moved the crowd in very slowly. I wouldn't normally complain about this, but coupled with poor communication between the venue and a band playing a show with no opening act, it led to myself and a large portion of the audience missing the first 30 minutes or so of the show. The main act should not start playing until there is no more line waiting to enter the venue. Ween started playing when there was still a line around the block. The sound was okay overall, but there were a few big feedback goofs.

Ween delivered a nautical-themed show which revolved around The Mollusk and their Halloween attire. Halloween shows are spectacular, as the show is no longer only on the stage, but surrounds you. In this surreal and smoky setting, their eclectic sound comes full circle with waves of colorful verses and sensory saturation. This was my third show, and I must say that even though they do many shows per month, they always seem to be having fun up there, and this really transfers to the crowd. A common gripe though, as I've had before, is that it's just too loud. I love loud music as much as anyone else, but there is certainly a limit when it comes to enjoyment, and the mix was far beyond this. I bring earplugs, but do not want to use them. During some parts of the show, I would even consider the decibel level to be dangerous to the fans. You would not shoot flames into the audience, so why inflict this kind of damage to a crowd of people? All said, I can't wait for Ween to make it back into town for another show. Nobody, even the grinch himself, can help but to smile throughout these tunes. Ween attempts to be tongue-in-cheek but can't help being fantastic writers at the same time, and it's all very well appreciated.

Solid show. Couple of issues. The show started as people were still lined up around the block which wasn't very nice. I missed 7 songs because of this even though I arrived before 8 o'clock. The venue was good(2nd time at Hammerstein) but bad mixing on the board. A lot of Mid made the guitar sound like a big ball of noise. Last year i saw them in central park which dominated this venue all around. I think next time ill stick to outside or best buy theater around the corner. Don't get seats be on the floor is your better bet also.

Show time was listed at 8 and we arrived a little late at 8:20. We could hear Ween had already started up through the doors, our fault. But when we went to get in line for security, we found out that the line wrapped all the way around a Manhattan long block. Another 25 minutes of waiting we got finally got in. My group headed to the bar to get drinks. We expected to pay the usual extortion prices of $8/beer etc, but we didn't actually get to order our drinks until after waiting in "line" for a half hour. I'm never going to a show at Hammerstein Ballroom again. Way overbooked, way under-staffed. The pace the bartenders were moving at was just a slap in the face after all that waiting too. Ween's first half of the set was great, would have been better if we could have seen the stage from the massive crowd waiting for drinks at the bar. The second half and encore were thoroughly Brown, which is just Ween being Ween.

This show was the first Ween show I've seen at least two years. Saw Papa Gener last year in Charlotte...and that was awesome, but nothing like getting all the boys together, forumers and good music to kick of the summer concert season. The boys were in full effect and it, though you get the sense of deja vu during a few moments of the show (ie: "Hi we're Ween") that only serves to strengthen the craziness and "not right, but wrong in a good way" familarity which of come to look forward to when at a Ween show. Great show...encore was a little weaker than I'd like to see, but all around awesome time! I'm already making plans for my next one.

I've enjoyed Ween since I first got into them in the 90's, and so I was really looking forward to this show. I think Ween is a very unique, ecclectic band with a wide variety of great songs. The weather was perfect and the crowd was really into it. I've had their music in my head even a week after the show. The song that really seemed to blow everybody away was "Transdermal Celebration." Other highlights included "With My Own Bare Hands," "The Mollusk," and "Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)." Of course they also played one of their more popular hits "Voodoo Lady," which was also precisely and richly performed. I'm also a fan of the Meat Puppets, whom I didn't know was opening, and I thought they did an excellent job as well. One of my friends who came with me had never heard of them and was really impressed. Great job to the Meat Puppets and Ween. One of the best shows I've seen at Red Rocks. One of the best shows I've seen anywhere!

Sad to say that the boys looked a little wrung out on the last night of tour, though the venue was, as usually described, the best in North America. Beautiful setting, great crowd, great weather, but the band's performance and song selection were not up to the usual mind-blowing standards that spoiled Ween fans have come to expect. I traveled all the way from NY to see the show, and while I wasn't exactly bummed out, I was disappointed. Gener's voice lacked range, Claude flubbed the drumsticks a few times, Glenn's keys and vocal mike were not working properly the whole night, and the band left out quite a few staples of their live performance in favor of playing some of the stranger, less-groovy tunes from La Cucaracha and the other albums. It was kinda obvious that the show lacked any acoustic tunes, and was very short on tunes from White Pepper and the Country album, specifically. Gener looks way too unhappy about being the chubby sober guy these days, and almost phones in the performance...he took quite a few cigarette breaks mid-song, retreating to the open backstage area behind Claude's drums to just sit on the floor and smoke while the rest of the band plugged away and looked at each other strangely. Dener's guitar solos were a little off the mark, and not quite as mind-blowing as he is capable of on a good night. All that said, I love the band, I'm glad I saw them at Red Rocks, but I'm looking forward to seeing them again soon at a time and place where they have more energy and enthusiasm. This show didn't give me my fix....

I love WEEN so much and this was the first time I have ever seen them live. I have listened to them for almost 20 years. With that being said, I thought they were great and I would pay to see them again. However, I left feeling a tad disappointed that they didn't play more songs and some of my favorites such as Mutilated Lips, Baby Bitch...etc. This was more of a personal let down for me, had I not waited SOOO long to see them for the first time I'm sure this would have been a different experience. What they did play ROCKED! They sounded great and I feel very lucky to have been there! Worth the $$$$$

What a great show!! We arrived early and stood in line outside the Fox Theater and had the pleasure of listening to them rehearse inside!! The doors of the theater were left open, PLUS there were speakers that were outside so we could hear them both ways!!! It wasn't a problem at all waiting in line. They didn't start the show until 8:45 (give or take a few minutes), and they played until MIDNIGHT!! This was a totally jammin' show. A big variety from their library and it was a treat for any Ween fan!! I absolutely LOVE Dean Ween and he is fun to watch play his guitar. He seems to be part of the instrument and I love the faces he makes as he's playing. I also had the pleasure of going to The Grove show last night and it was equally as good, yet totally different. They played "A Song for Eddie" at The Grove last night, and it was AWESOME!!! They also did a Neil Young cover (Four Dead in Ohio), and they ROCKED IT! Dean also sang "My Own Bare Hands" at The Grove last night -- LOVE YOU DEAN WEEN!!!

i hate to have to bring up the aging factor - i'm doing it right along with them, but since it's been a decade since i saw these - YES, GODS - of rock, rock my world, i worried. i chastised myself for being agist against my own generation, and rightly so, seeing as how these boys rocked the roof off the fox theater friday night. mr. freeman's voice is still in top form. on songs like 'spinal meningitis...' and 'nan' his voice hardly varied from its altered version on the album; it seemed obvious to me he was immitating the effect, and i was impressed. i was further amazed when he sang the female part in 'happy colored marbles,' and was spot on for pitch. then, da**ed if he didn't do a spot-on bowie voice for their almost tongue-in-cheek rendition of 'let's dance.' and though mr. malchiondo didn't sing but two (three?) songs, his voice never fails to wow me with it's power and gravely edge, particularly with the crowd-rousing 'blarney stone.' ween is NEVER a band to be missed. you don't have to smoke a bowl to enjoy this fantastically talented, multi-faceted, diamond studded little band of boys from PA. if recordings could capture the rapture, i would own them all, video and CD. you have to experience it in person, whether you're familiar or not. PS - i took a star off for the sound at the venue, and for the talking, which normally shouldn't affect my enjoyment, but somehow did. it certainly is no fault of the band. so, fox theater, i think y'all should look into that. er, the sound, that is. the talking...well, that was just weird.

Ween were in full effect this past Saturday night and everyone in the sold out Wiltern was treated to one of the absolute best shows of recent memory. The covers of 'Ace of Spades' and 'Let's Dance' were spot on and worthy entries into the Rock 'n' Roll Karaoke Hall of Fame. Dean's flaming fretwork was as muscle-bound as the He-Man poses he kept striking after every song. Gene's hair has gone into 'Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein' mode but his vocal dexterity shows no signs of wear. Ween fans are some of the wackiest folks but always friendly and willing to share a story and/or a toke. Just the fact that this band hasn't released a studio album since 2007 and they can still sell out the Wiltern is a testament to what happens when the 'Brown comes to your town'.

Ween blew the doors of the fox theater. The most excited ween crowd I have ever encountered. Ween is a tour de force, with no one leaving unhappy (unless they were to wasted to figure out that greatness happened).

Ween are god. To go to a show like this is to join a religion, a cult, or at least a conspiracy... When Ween plays live, they make it seem as if all other rock bands before them have merely been imposters. All hail Ween.

even by ween standards. they were swingin'. gener was in perfect form (i.e. just loony enough), which was reassuring after hearing the reports out of vancouver. dean's solo on transdermal was sublime. they were relaxed and in control - when they stumbled slightly on blarney stone they turned it into this vocal back and forth (got welts on my arse... etc) that was cool. i got home and ate a chocolate brownie.

The show was just ok. Worse seats in history! Ween- love ya, but those jams are putting me to sleep! Have had better Ween experiences. I'll see ya next year!

Ween was 3 hours filled with "hit" and jams. The drummer had a long solo towards the end of the show that was great but a bit too long. I was out of my chair as was the crowd around me. This was my first time seeing Ween live and I'm sure I'll see them again.

Great show. Good energy, tight transitions, an acoustic set.... 3.5 hours of Ween playing great music. The band was very appreciative and came out and bowed as a band. Haven't seen that before. The boys keep maturing and getting better.

Played for a reeeeaaaalllyy long time (over 2 hours)..... Maybe missed a couple old favorites but with so much material you couldn't go wrong... Sounded good - all instruments and vocals were clean....maybe could have been louder... great venue... it was sold-out but no problem moving around on the floor to any spot.... plenty of bars and staff was friendly and helpful

probably the worst ween show i have seen out 8 shows. a bunch of not funny, overwrought songs, low energy and drivel. not the ween i love. very disappointing since the fox theater is really an excellent venue in all respects...

A great Bay Area appearance by Ween. They talked about how nice the Fox Theater is and they played a great 3-hour, 35-song set.

One of my favorite things about this show was the audience - everyone was so cool and so down with the Weeners. This show was so brown. And I was scotchguard.

For those who unfortunately do not know ween check them out they are awesome! The outside venue in central park was really nice except for the lack of seating, just some bleachers were set up. Ween sounded amazing especially for being outside they did one cover of David Bowie it was outrageous. The crowd was very laid back mostly a bunch of very cool hippies. Definitely a memorable show.

The 2.5 hour set was definitely good...although the Rush cover was a pale comparison to the original....If you're bothered by tons of weed smoking, I'd skip the concert - LOL!

Pretty fun show. Got hammered. Music wasn't that loud unfortunately. Summerstage is pretty weak as a venue.

This was an amazing show. They played so many great songs. Most of them I knew but some I didn't. They still managed to make me feel like I already loved a song that I didn't know! That is hard to do. And I will be updating my Ween collection ASAP! I was so excited to finally get to see Ween. I have loved them for 15 years!! So to finally get to see them was a huge thing!! They did not disappoint and I would see them again tomorrow if I could!

I've seen these guys twice before, once in Allentown, where they opened for some terrible band I wished I didn't stay for, and once in Philly at the waterfront. This time they played for a solid 2.5 hours and the whole experience was better than the previous two shows by a long shot. I think NYC just brings the best out in bands, and this was no exception.

I went to this show with only the most minimal knowledge of this band. I knew a few tunes off "Chocolate and Cheese" and half-listened to "La Cucaracha" and "12 Country Golden Greats" once at a friends' place. I know of a few folks who are deadhead-like in their devotion and had vaguely heard that they put on a, shall we say, "unique" show. A friend convinced me to get tix. Wasn't expecting much but I was more than pleasantly surprised. I can say now, that "Dean" and "Gene" and their fellow cohorts put on an extremely tight, raucous, loud, balls-to-the-wall, non-stop jam-athon touching on everything from pop, soul, psychedelia, country, polka, hard rock, jazz, fusion, reggae, metal, punk, (big time) parody just to name a few genres. For those of the faint of heart, be forewarned, Ween, are most DEFINITELY NOT PC. Their lyrics are often outrageously offensive...in many cases, but not all, hilariously so. As any Ween fan will tell you, along with their amazing chops and advanced tunefulness, that is a huge part of their twisted charm.
