Mark Knopfler

MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child.

I was lukewarm about driving 4 hours to this concert, but a friend who also shares my birthday and is a huge Mark Knopfler fan talked me into going. I am so glad he did. I could go on about the performance, but everyone knows how good Mark is, and all I can add is how superb his backing musicians were - skilled on numerous instruments, too. I particularly enjoyed the more Celtic-influenced songs. The show was great in every respect, from virtuosity to tune selections. What I imagine was a set of uilleann pipes, as well as a cittern were an unexpected surprise in the well-stocked arsenal of instruments being utilized. I want to add that the N Charleston Performing Arts Center is an excellent venue; the acoustics were clear everywhere, and there really is not a bad seat in the house. Every string on the guitar, every note on the piano, and every subtle shading of cymbals was clear and distinct. Spending my birthday at this concert was a real thrill for this lover of progressive music. And the weekend spent on Folly Beach was great too (if a bit wet!).

I have been a Mark Knopfler fan since Dire Straits days, during his collaborations with EmmyLou Harris and Chet Atkins and through his solo career. This is my second time to see him and the band in concert and hope not my last. Make no mistake, Mark Knopfler is not about putting on a stage show. He is a craftsman at the very pinnacle of his craft. He composes; he plays; he sings; he blends musical instruments and styles in ways that defy a single genre. He is part folk. Part rock. Part balladeer. Part country. He is a storyteller and a poet and a hell of a guitar player. He can have the audience up on their feet clapping wildly at one moment and totally quiet a few bars later. He connects with the audience through his music and the music of his mates in the band not through theatrics and that is something very, very special.

It's wonderful to be part of a live concert where the Performer and the Audience are so enjoying each other. Mark Knopfler and his 7 amazing bandmembers put on a show at Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR last night that was nothing short of awesome. A set list that spanned some 30+ years of early Dire Straits classics and Knopfler's top notch work of the past 15 years. And Portland fans let them know, in no uncertain terms, how much they appreciated it. 3 Encores! The man is 60+. Talk about a Ticket To Heaven!

Knopfler was brilliant, as well as his rockin' ceilidh band. Sadly, sound on the vocals was not adequate volume or balance - take your pick. Keller Auditorium lighting crew - whoever was on the spotlight - less espresso, dude - highly distracting and totally unnecessary to move that puppy around.

Amazing guitar work of course, couldn't understand a word he said though, over bassed sound guy as usual, why concert sound engineers don't make the vocals the priority always ceases to amaze me. mark's guitar was articulated very well though, would have liked more oldies and the hard driving stuff, the Irish ballads were pretty but got old quick.

The eight musicians and countless instruments made for a wonderful sound -- much more robust than Dire Straits. Which may be why they didn't play very many of the old tunes -- much to my disappointment. The Keller needs to get better spotlight operators. The person who was in charge of the far right spot couldn't seem to hold still on Mark -- pretty distracting!

Mark Knopfler is a class act. I loved that the opening act started early and was only 35 minutes long. I loved that Mark and band played for almost two hours and did two encores. The audience was well-behaved (as I imagine most of his audiences are) and the house rocked. Mark has such a great energy. His band members are multi-talented and the instrumental collaborations were awesome. We will definitely go to another of Mark's shows. We had tickets a year or so ago to see him and, can you believe it, forgot to go! This more than made up for it.

That was an incredible 2 hours of nonstop playing and gorgeous vocals. Knofler's voice cannot be mistaken for anyone else's and the rich sensuality of it still just knocks me out after all these years. To say nothing of the man's ability to play guitar. The finesse of his playing was stunning. Hard to believe his hands could still fly that quickly over those strings by the end of the performance. And his band!!!!!!!!! I could go on and on.......

He is the most astounding musician--his talent is so natural and without limit as is also true of the excellent musicians that were with him. His voice just adds to the experience. You could tell how much they all enjoyed playing together and there was no pretense, just pleasure, love and the joy of listening to beautiful, smooth sounds. They clearly love the audience without being pretentious--no American Idol attitudes going on here. It was simply, a wonderful evening!

Mark is touring with his usual band of suspects plus some extras that really added to the performance. There were 8 in total (perhaps why ticket prices were so painful). I'm going to reseach Tim O'Brien - he was masterful but then so was everyone else. Great set list that covered all the highlights in his catalog with some extended instrumental jams. This is the beginning of the tour and I hope someone that reads this can make a few adjustments: guitar cam with artistic image made it hard to see his fingers, the bass was putting off an obnoxious hum and the center spot on Mark kept bobbling. But don't get me wrong - the show was a "don't miss" to anyone down the road on his tour schedule. I was thrilled to hear Romeo and Juliet (but he has never let me down before)... also Telegraph Road, What It Is, Brothers in Arms. How come no one else plays a National Guitar? LOVE THAT GUITAR! Highlight? .... the huddle at the end of the encore and then Piper to the End - lovely.

Once again, Mark Knopfler shared his stunning body of work. From the more explicit early work of Dire Straits to the more complex and intricate Celtic melodies, including a wonderful piece not yet played before, Knopler was a Master. Combined with other masters playing with him, as he described them, Knopfler deftly played his series of guitars and warmly integrated the lyrics that provided a warm, smoky feel - like a good wine. Last evening was like having a longtime friend play for you personally. He is beloved and I hope that he keeps coming out to play for a very long time.

Lets start writing that I am a huge fan of Mark Knopfler and also of course of Dire Straits. I know that when a guy get separated from his/her original band in this case Mark He has the right to develop his own style but everybody knows that the style of Dire Straits was almost 100% Mark Knopfler... I paid for every new Mark's CD (without Dire Straits) giving the opportunity to listen and enjoy his music BUT I really think that almost all his new music is very sad, slow and I miss the happy Mark with his style in Walk of Life or Money for nothing for example. In the concert (Red Rocks, Colorado) last year the concert obviously focus on his new career and new music. I have no problem with that but again the music is a little bit boring. In fact I use his CD "Kill to Get Krimson" to sleep... is good music! don't get me wrong! but not the one I am going to enjoy in my car in a happy moment like I did with Dire Straits with Sultan of Swing and Walk of Life. When I take a look again to the Dire Straits concerts Mark looks very happy, funny and alive. With his concerts as solist he look tired and sad. And don't tell me that is about his age! because there is several guys older than Mark that still show a lot in their concerts (Rolling Stones for example!). My video of the concert in youtube was banned by the company that represent Mark Knopfler... this is another negative point because I don't use my video to sell anything and is the only banned video of the tons of concerts that I have on youtube of other artists (recorded with my own camera).

Always the best,, we saw a true Legend for the fourth time in five years. Mark's music now appeals to all ages. The Ann Arbor audience was diverse and smart, as a big college town should be. Ever since Cet Atkins passing, I believe that Mark Knopfler is the Greatest Guitar player and composer in the world today. We are fortunate that he still makes world tours. Marks band also consists of world class musicans who are a perfect fit. I am totally amazed by his production of just wonderful music the past 30 years or so. When you see the masters perform, it's the performance first by the whole unit. Then the backup players both together and in solo. Then the master, in this case Mark Knopfler, and how he gives not only of himself, but to his band mates and ultimately us. Mr. Knopfler could not have given more. I'd say I heard the most beautiful guitar playing ever,Mr. Knopfler, and one of the best group of players to compliment that virtuoso. Not a soul in last nights audience experienced anything but eight masters sharing the stage together entertaining the hell out of us. Every person there was there because of Mark Knopfler and left the show simply astounded by all eight performers. I loved every single note.

I had waited years to ses Mark Knopfler, acquired great seats and could barely hear a word of ANY song!!! The sound mix was simply HORRIBLE!!! During acoustic songs, if you listened very closely you could hear that he still possesses a great mellow voice but for the rest of the night it might as well all been all instrumentals. Mark Knopfler and his epic talent continues to deliver decades after his musical genius first entered our living rooms. His current band (many of who have been with him throughout) are some of the most gifted musicians I've witnessed. It was truly a memorable evening enjoying his talent live; upclose and personal. Overall, great concert. What I liked the most: Played many new songs and songs from his solo career. Played extended versions of several songs - the 15-minute Marbletown was outstanding, and the long versions of Hill Farmer's Blues and Speedway at Nazareth were worth the entire concert by themselves. Privateering was also an outstanding song in its live format, and Postcards from Paraguay had a nice refresh introducing the band. As for the Dire Straits stuff, I don't care as much. I love it, but have heard it either in live or recorded concerts so much that I was glad to see he kept it to a minimum and mostly played newer songs instead. I wish he would choose other obscure but beautiful Dire Straits tracks, such as The Man's Too Strong, instead of the usual hits. The band played awesome; they are obviously a talented group of musicians that play well together. Mark did not play as well as in the last tour, however he still showed some great finger skills. The inclusion of folk instruments from the British isles, although not my favorite part of his solo repertoire, fit very well in the concert.

Mark Knopfler and his band gave a great show. The music was fantastic. Though a longtime fan, I am unfamiliar with much of his repertoire, but its overall quality is so strong that it almost completely compensated for not knowing most of the tunes he played. Still, I expected more from "Brothers In Arms," which I assume is his biggest hit album, and was disappointed not to hear the standards that drew me there. He talked about a track from "Local Hero" but I did not recognize it and don't believe it was the main theme. This terrific concert could have been even better had he spent more time "excavating" older pieces, as he promised. That said, the music I heard for the first time was beautiful and I wish I heard it more often.

Pros: Mark Knopfler's music is unbeatable. He's the best of the best, hands down. His concert was fantastic, and his band members were top rate-- on a par with him. I have only positive things to say about the music, the performance, and the entire experience. I like that he showed off each of the band members. Now I have a greater appreciation and a visual to attach to the instrumentals when I listen to a song Cons: Way too short. He played for less than 2 hours and, like another reviewer, I agree that he shouldn't have made the audience beg and beg for encores (which we did). He's too good for that; he should've just continued playing. I wish he had played a greater variety from his different albums, but in such a short amount of time, he couldn't I guess. I gave it five stars because it's Mark Knopfler. He's a five star musician, no matter how long his concerts go for.

Last (and first) saw Mr. Knopfler in 2005 on the Shangri-La tour. Without spoiling it by being specific -- this tour has a lot less rock and roll and more of the moody langourous pieces that Mark seems to be all about these days. There definitely are some rockers, just not much pop-era Dire Straits. Not that the performances aren't great regardless but I get the sense that certain tunes he only does out of duty to the audience. The upside is, he does some back catalogue items that you may not have expected to ever hear live (two of them being among my favorites, so I was thrilled!) and everything sounds gorgeous, sometimes more so than on the album, if that's possible. Fantastic accompaniment from Michael McGoldrick on pipes and Nigel Hitchcock on saxophones in particular. If you love Mark's solo albums then you will love this show. There is still some Dire Straits DNA evident, but not a whole lot left, then again Mark has been solo longer than he was in Dire Straits so this is sort of inevitable.

Really enjoyed the show. He has assembled an awesome group of musicians. Played for two hours. Mark was interacting with the crowd and seemed to be having a great time. He is still at the top of his game. Was not familiar with some of the songs, but that didn't matter because they were so good. Wish he would have played something from Sailing to Philadelphia, i enjoyed that disc much more than Tracker. Saw Dire Straits on their first tour in Miami many years ago, really good to see Mark out on tour and giving us such great music. too bad the band cut out the back door before we could see them going. a group of people were waiting to see them get on the buses, but were told they had already left. Most other bands actually come out the stage door and at least wave to the crowds before boarding. oh well..

Have been a Knopfler fan since the 80's, and this was my first time seeing him solo. The energy level of the Dire Straits era was just dynamic. this solo era is very different but nonetheless enjoyable. As an "old rocker" I tend to sympathize with the older-set musicians of our day, however this guy needs no sympathy. He has demonstrated time & again that he can flat-out play, and that being said, expects the same of those with whom he surrounds himself. This latest band is fabulous! MK sports an 8 piece stage set of VERY accomplished musicians (one of whom he touts as playing 20 different instruments). They are all adept and besides being individually accomplished, have MK acting as the cement between the bricks. Some of the instruments played I have never seen before, and I swear were hauled out of the Highlands of Scotland. I can only imagine these guys getting snooted up on a few wee drams of Scottish liquor and getting down to it! This was one of the finest rock-based shows that I have seen in many years. Don't miss it if you have the opportunity!

Last Tuesday concert at the Beacon was just a superb performance supported by great musicians. Excellent selection of songs, a balanced mix of tunes between Dire Straits and the solo albums. A perfectionist musician that continue to offer his intelligent music well orchestrated . A musician not to be missed every time he come to town !

Again, Mr. Knopfler and his band was awesome in this intimate Chicago Theatre venue. We have seen him often over the last eight years. This by far was one of his best shows. We enjoyed how his band were given a more prominent role in performing on stage. Crowd was appreciative and Mark seemed to have us all under his spell!

The words that come to mind when I think of my experience at the Mark Knopfler concert are phenomenal, fantastic, unbelievably entertaining, and worth every penny!!! From the lighting, to the acoustics, to the seating...the Michigan Theatre was a perfect venue for this artist and his amazing band. Every bandmate was at the top of his craft! The way they transitioned from one song to the next left no holes in the production...the keyboards kept the momentum going, as the changed guitars, fiddles, whistles, and even brought out the guest saxophone player. It just doesn't get any better this this concert! Thank you, Mark Knopfler!!! Excellent job!!!

Since I never got to see Dire Straits "back in the day", it made me very happy to be able to see Mark Knopfler. Our seats were great, and the sound was phenomenal. All of the musicians were excellent, playing multiple instruments, and adding to the great sound. I warned everyone around me that if he did "Romeo and Juliet", I would probably scream. He did, and I did--would have done a banshee proud; I heard the opening notes, and I was gone. Mr. Knopfler is probably the most modest, unassuming musician I have ever had the privilege to see; and I hope he continues to make music for a long time to come.

I had been looking forward to this concert for months. Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have been a favorite for years. It was a disappointment. I had scored terrific seats center balcony, I thought. Sound was a big mashup of everything and sometimes buzzing. Could not make out the individual parts as one can with an album. Couldn't hear the lyrics except when it was only a lyric and no music. At times when it was just acoustic, one could hear the lyric, the tune and the talented musicians. Hope it was just an anomaly where I was sitting. Maybe it was the sound engineer? I wish I could have a do-over.

Mark knopfler and his stellar band are on the top rong of their craft. I felt like baby in a musical bassinet soaking in the smooth sounds. What a pleasure it was seeing him in a smaller venue like the Majestic. It was my second show and I was pleased he played Sultans of Swing this time around. Loved this show.

We purchased these tickets in March for the Sept show and it was worth waiting for! Knopfler and Band were excellent in every way. 2 hours of non-stop playing a nice variety of old, new, and Dire Straits songs. Knopfler is not a flamboyant guitarist, and does not need to be-his music screams out beauty that does not need physical flair! We thoroughly enjoyed this show and will not hesitate to buy tickets when (if) he comes our way!

Writing about music is like dancing with a building...All I can say is, this is the best band going today. Led by the extremely gifted Mark Knopfler...He has written so many great songs that one feels deprived when he doesn't play them all. He plays the guitar like an extension of his soul...I'm going to NYC just to hear him again.

First off, the Dolby Theatre is an excellent venue to hear live music and Mark Knopfler and his excellent backing band didn't disappoint. There's nothing flashy or showy about Mark, he blends beautifully with his band and his talent shines with his musicianship and performance. Exactly what you want to see from a seasoned pro!

Couldn't have enjoyed this concert more! Loved the intimacy of the Greek, only downfall was the tight seating, we were on top of each other. This was one of the most impressive concerts I have ever been to, and I'm a concert professional! The talent and clarity of the sound was beyond words. LOVED THIS SHOW!!!!! As far as seating goes the view was great! However, larger individuals spilled over into our seats, one poor guy bought 2 tickets he couldn't use because there was no room for him to sit, think he ended up on the lawn. In that respect, if you do not get early and plant yourself in your spot you are likely to not be able to sit down. In addition, getting up to get drink and go to the bathroom were very challenging.

The performance was consistently great. Mark's guitar skills are unquestionable. His back-up band melded flawlessly and supported Mark's skills in a well-practiced way. My only disappointment was he didn't include Beryl or Brothers in Arms in his setlist

Two hours of perfection from Mark Knopfler and his band. Opening with "What it is" and then a selection from his recent album (Privateering), from past solo albums and from the Dire Straights era (Romeo and Juliette, Telegraph Road) wrapping up with "Going Home". Great venue (Fox Theatre in Oakland) too.

A host of great new songs from Mark's new album, plus a few classics. Can't emphasize enough the depth of talent backing Mark on stage. Would love to have a love recording from this tour, as some of the extended versions of the songs were awesome examples of technical and artistic virtuosity from all the people on stage.

The venue was great. The show was awesome. The band was tight. Couldn't understand any of the words, but could recognize some tunes. But after playing 4 or 5 noodle-ey tunes for an encore, they walked off the stage and the house lights came up. The didn't play "Sultans of Swing." Why, oh, why not? I spent 7 1/2 hours, drove 220 miles round trip after work, paid $105 for a ticket, $35 for gas, $10 for parking, and THEY DIDN'T PLAY SULTANS OF SWING. To say that was an anticlimax would be an understatement. Very disappointed.

Mark Knopfler rolled into Albany NY last night with a terrific backing band and a stool. A stool? Yes, apparently he "pulled something" (further investigation needed) so he sat on a stool front and center the whole show. That's OK with me, it was easy to watch his guitar playing that way! The mix of songs ranged from the lastest tunes from Get Lucky, all the way thru the archives to the hit Sultans of Swing, which was fantastic. Every song had some extended jamming and it was all in good taste. No over the top showing off, just a bunch of great musicians showing what they could do, and some nice interplay between them. All of the band mambers are multi instrumental talents, so the vibe ranged from pure rock n roll to blue grass and country. All in all we couldn't get enough. Although we all suspected the show was over after the encore it didn't prevent the crowd from standing on their feet cheering loudly until the lights were on. Mark and the band are certainly welcome to come back - soon!

Wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasently suprised! Laid back show as Mark needed to stay seated because of an "injury" but it didn't affect the quality of his playing. His voice is as strong as ever and overall sound from the 8 piece band was phenomanal. Setlist is "solo work" heavy with the Dire Straits classic "Sultons of Swing" being the only "hit" to make the cut. That's right...none of the "MTV" hits...very refreshing!

That evening at United Palace, Mark sat all evening in a rotating bar chair because he had a pinched nerve in his lower back making it uncomfortable to stand and move about. Occassionally he would be on his feet when he finished a memorable guitar solo. As he walked off he had to hold onto the shoulder of the band member in front of him. However, the Advill he said he took and the Guiness they brought out for the band on the encore break (he did not bother to walk off and back on - they just hung out and drank their ales)... none of his ailment dulled his incredible technigue on the myraids of guitars that were brought out to him or changed his unique vocal qaulaity nor his stories and personable chatting with the audience. A very wonder evening with tunes from his Lucky recording (which sound so much more robust live than on disc) to earlier solo and Dire Straight hits. BTW, a very eclectic, multi-talented tight 7 piece band helped Mark pull this event off. The only disappointment - they did not perform more Dire Straights tunes especially Money For Nothing. But go anyway!

Want my money back. I think the fans should have a decent idea of the playlist of an Artist prior to purchasing a ticket, especially when the artist has a long, extended career. If I had known that most of the playlist material was going to come from "new-ish" material I would have never gone to the shown. I heard only two songs out the entire performance that was familiar, very disappointed.
