Gordon Lightfoot

Gordon Lightfoot

GORDON LIGHTFOOT IN CONCERT: Legendary singer-songwriter and folk-pop pioneer Gordon Lightfoot helped define the sound of '60s folk with his rootsy voice and politically-minded songs. A half a century later, Lightfoot continues to be a beacon of authenticity, taking the stage with little more than a mic and his trusty twelve-string guitar to deliver no-frills renditions of laid-back, wide-eyed classics like "Sundown" and "Sit Down Young Stranger." Joined by a talented band of backing players for his upcoming tour, Lightfoot will lead fans on a golden-toned stroll down memory lane. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Ontario-born Gordon Lightfoot got an early start in music, performing in church choirs during his youth and making his first appearance at Toronto's historic Massey Hall at just age 12.

I have been a Lightfoot fan for nearly 50 years. He, like all of us, has grown older but his music is ageless. He is a talented and gracious performer. What a treat to have attended this concert

Mr. LIghtfoot was a joiy t see......even at this stage of his career. Venue was good and sound was good. Only disapointment was some rude goof balls would stand in the back at the bar and talk loudly, or loudly on their cell phones. This should not be allowed. They should be asked to leave the hall if they want to make phone calls. And, loud or laughing idiots should be asked to leave. Mr. L is worthy of mores respect...as in any performer.

Gordon Lightgoot has been writing masterpieces and singing them to us for more then 50 years. His lyrics and melodies are like none other. He is a class of music, all his own. I have seen him five times over the years and he always consistantly puts on a great show. He sings a lot, talks only a little and he puts everything into the perfection of his phrasing. He never misses a word. His once powerful voice is weaker now but it does not seem to matter because he has found a way to out perform his lesser vocal strength. Gord has masterfully and very carefully found a way to sligtly rephrase certain lines to avoid vocal ranges he can no longer meet. Some of his songs were given a re-birth of sorts through these suttle phrasing changes. For many years when you went to a Gordon Lightfoot concert his live performance sounded exactly like his records but with the bigger more exciting sound of the concert hall. The most amazing thing about Gordon Lighfoot is his incerdible catalog of masterpeices covering five decades. If you don't have his albums you should get a few, then make sure you see him in concert. His concerts are always sold out and his fans really shout out their affection for this Canadian legend.

I have attended more Lightfoot concerts than probably 99% of his fans-from the early '70's to now. I've even been to Toronto to hear him in Massey Hall, which is in itself a phenomenon as it was built in 1864. I play his music constantly and I perform his music every time I perform. So yes, I am a huge Lighfoot fan - a "Lighthead" if you please. I love his style, I love his voice and I respect him as a folk music icon. His contribution has been great and will have a lasting effect on folk music. It saddens me to hear that great baritone voice fading and the lack of new song production but things change and so do his concerts. I'm not sure I will attend another as I want to remember him more clearly as he was even a few years ago. The music performance was tight as always because he and his band are very accomplished and well rehearsed. However, the decline in his voice quality signals a time for something different- Here's what I would like to see: He must have many many stories to tell about his travels and music, friends and family. I would love to hear those stories interwoven amongst fewer songs-to let people get to know him as a person-kinda ala Harry Chapin. I know he's quiet, maybe even shy, but he could rehearse his stories and really enhance his image of who he is. In short, his declining voice quality begs for something different-enhance the image and prepare his followers for the possibility that Old Gord can't do this forever. For those who have never seen him GO!! It is an historic thing and worth the effort.

I must say we were glad to have seen Gordon Lightfoot- but it was a shocker to see how we have forgotten that we are all much older.....Mr Lightfoot is definitely no longer in his prime, but he did try to bring us all back to a bygone era that was filled with wonderful music. He and his music was at least close enough to take you back in time, that, we can thank Mr. Lightfoot for.

This was the third time I've had the pleasure to see Lightfoot in the past year. Due to age, I feel we're headed toward the end of our Carefree Highway. Anyone who hasn't seen him needs to make sure they do so. He starts on time and plays everything you wanted to hear. This was such a treat. Go see him while you still can.

I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot's music and he remains one of my favorites. As you may know he has had some serious health issues and almost died a few years ago plus he is around 70 years old. I saw first saw him in Birmingham in 2008, his voice was weak and he appeared tired. None the less he gave the best he could and I enjoyed the evening. In 2009 when It was announced he would be in Huntsville I did not plan to go but the ability to get 3rd row center seats was too much to pass up.This time around, all i can say is Wow! What a difference a year makes. His voice was much improved, hitting the notes better and almost sounding like the 1970's records. He was much more energetic and you could he was having fun on stage. His traveling band, while small in number, do a great job. He sang many of his old songs with several newer songs. He did two full sets with one short break and an encore. This was an excellent concert. If he comes back around I will go again.

Mr. Lightfoot, even though he is aging and his voice isn't as bold as it used to be, still can enthrall his audience. Hey, it's the music that helps carry him through. We saw him three times years ago and last year, as well. Guess what, we'd go to see him again. A Big Fan

Let me preface this by saying I wasn't able to attend the Huntsville concert due to health concerns, but I saw Gordon LIghtfoot at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham on the 2008 tour. I've been listening to Lightfoot since I got The "Sit Down Young Stranger" album in 1971 (it was later re-released as "If You Could Read My Mind"). Over the years I bought every album, including the early '60s releases, and learned and performed dozens of his songs during my career as a folksinger. Every album was eagerly anticipated and every time there was a concert anywhere near where I was living, I went. Although he is older now and, due to his recent health problems, appears not quite as robust as in past years, Lightfoot still sounds like Lightfoot - fantastic. On the first couple of songs, his voice sounded a bit thin but as he warmed up, the vocals began to ring as strong and vibrant as ever. His band performs so tightly it is as if they are one person - they are completely in sync with one another .Many times a band that has played together will sound tired and impatient and give off a feeling of "let's just get it over with already". After probably playing the songs hundreds of times, these fellows sound as fresh and enthusiastic as ever. The set list included the hits of course, "Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," etc. but also included a few I had never heard him perform live before. For the first time in the many concerts I attended he sang my all-time favorite "If Children Had Wings" - I was entranced and delighted. The lyrics of "All the Lovely Ladies" says, "heaven can be yours just for now" and that night it truly was. Thank you Gordon for all these years of wonderful music, I look forward to many more.

2 stars are just because I love so many of Gordo's songs and his songwriting talent. Wow, I was really not expecting Gordo to sound and look so old. It really took me aback. I took my dad as an early Father's Day present and felt really bad about it. His voice was really bad. He played a lot of songs I had never heard. Even my dad didn't know many of them. My dad played Gordon's stuff a lot when I was little and I became a fan in my 20's when I began to play guitar. So we know a lot of his songs. We kept shouting for him to play "Affair" and he wouldn't. The last time we saw him 10 years ago, the same thing happened. That's an amazing story-song and I am puzzled as to why he's dead set against playing it. Gordon must have a lot of bills to pay because he really should consider calling it quits. I really felt pity and was embarrassed for him. I was surprised at how forgiving and kind the audience was. I expected to see many walk out, but they didn't. The tickets were very expensive as well. I paid over $100 for the two tickets and we in the upper level of the concert hall. I was impressed/surprised he did Wreck due to the length and lyrics. Again, was very sad for my dad because Gordo is one of his favorites. I really hate that he was in such bad shape for the last time Dad will see him.

I saw Gordon Lightfoot in Orlando in 1983. He was awesome then. 26 years older and with health issues his voice was weaker, but just to see him and hear him for what is probably the last time was well worth the price. Only a true Gordon Lightfoot fan would have appreciated his effort.

GL's performance was very good. However, the volume of his voice was too low, and even on a front row, I had trouble hearing him that well over the music. I'm not a huge fan, so the show went a little long for me... I got bored. But my friends, who are GL fans, loved all of it.

Gordon Lightfoot has written a catalog of unforgettable, heartfelt and catchy songs. It was really great to see and hear the man himself perform them live. Though well up in years, he played a very energetic 2 set show and demostrated why he's been considered a master performer for over 50 years. The grove was a perfect setting, with it's great seating and sight-lines. And the sound mix was great, I heard every lyric.

I saw Gordon Lightfoot years ago at my college, and also at the Troubadour in Los Angeles!! He was amazing then and he still is. He played a wonderful set of songs in the most beautiful setting...by the San Diego Bay...a gorgeous evening!!! He still has that amazing voice, and played like he really wanted to be there performing!!! A perfect night!!

My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed Gordon Lightfoot's concert. He is truly an icon. He has endured some major health problems and the death, three years ago, of his longtime friend and lead guitarist, Terry Clements. Yet Gord soldiers on, and sings and plays his heart out for his fans. His music is the soundtrack of so many of our lives. It was our first time at Sun Center and we found the venue to be very comfortable. The small audience size is more intimate than other venues and we really liked that.

Gordon Lightfoot is the best singer/songwriter of our time. He has almost a cult following. Have seen him about 15 times & although his voice is a little worse for the wear, he is simply magical. He interacts with the audience & makes you feel like you've known him forever. He played a few different tunes than he has in the past which was a wonderful surprise. The concert was at an outside venue & right before the last song began, it started to rain. No one got up to leave. That is a testament to his fans dying devotion.

The concert was very enjoyable. Many of his songs depend on his unique vocal inflections so, even the unfamiliar songs seemed familiar. The Taft sound made it impossible to really hear the words which is a disadvantage for an artist who is a poet like GL. The band was talented but restrained supporting him all the way. I am glad that I went but probably don't have to see him again for another few years.

The last time I saw his face was almost 40 years ago. It was shocking to see the deterioration n his stamina and physique. Hos voice was a barely audible whisper at times, and he had trouble with some of the notes. Clearly, there were songs that he could no longer sing because of the range or the stress with breathing. Still, the Lightfoot magic was there to illuminate the dark areas, Moving songs were the Edmund Fitzgerald, Shadows, If she could read my mind, and Carefree Highway. Every song was loved, just not to the same vitality it once had. It was a privilege to be there.

Went to the Gordon Lightfoot concert in Joliet, Illinois on October 29, 2013. I was looking forward to this concert because I was a life long fan of his since the 70's. I have been to the Rialto Square Theater before and liked the acoustics as well as the sound system for vocals. Boy was I in a shock to listen to a toned down vocals where you couldn't even understand what he was singing. The music and vocals should have been turned up to provide a little ump to the whole evening. It was probably one of the most boring concerts I had ever been to in a long time. Turn up his mike and that would have changed the whole evening. Would not recommend this to anyone.

Yes, he is getting up there, but it is still awesome to hear this Canadian folk legend! His voice is getting old, and if you don't know all of the words to his songs, you aren't going to understand them all at the concert. But from Sundown to the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Canadian Railway Trilogy, you still can't go wrong at this concert!

What needs to be said about the man who wrote "Sundown" and "Carefree Highway". He was fabulous as he always is. The crowd gets a little older each time I see him, but Gordon Lightfoot didn't seem to mind! Played "Wreck" of course and my all time favorite, which brought tears to my eyes, "Song For A Winter's Night". Never miss Gordon Lightfoot when he comes to SW Michigan.

Mr. Lightfoot is not a spring chicken anymore so, in short, I would recommend seeing him sooner than later. His voice has changed into a combination of Bob Dylan and Willy Nelson. It is hard to understand the words (Bob) and he sings like an older man (Willy) but I have to respect the man for all the great tunes he has produced and for that...he is a must see. He did not have any back up singers so many of his songs did not sound as good or he could not sing them (Summer Side of Life). Gordy is worth seeing!!

This was an excellent show from a living legend. The show lasted about two hours with a ten minute intermission between two sets and they did an encore. His band is very tight with most of the members of the band having been with him for at least thrity years; his bass guitarist more than forty years. The new lead guitarist is a fine addition. Gord is getting older as most of us are and I will admit that his voice is not as strong as it once was, but his songs are timeless. Seeing him perform live with his band is something every Lightfoot fan should do.

It was an enjoyable night in Pensacola, Gordon's voice was subdued by age, but his personality is shining bright. Would have liked more audience interaction. Those in the audience, shall we say, "a little older than I ", seemed to really enjoy the show. At 44, some the band members had been touring with Gordon before I was born. The show was a bit short, about 90 min on stage, but the music was crisp and the room sounded great. Please be patient at this venue, the management is a work in progress. They open the doors at 1 hour before show, which is normal, however they force you to stay in an small, crowded lobby for 30 min or so, before being allowed to sit. They should take lessons from the Saenger in Mobile, Al.

I had the honor of attending Gordon Lightfoot's performance at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011. Gordy's voice is still golden. He blew away the audience with his stellar performance and sang all of our favorites. His (same) musicians were quite awesome as well. The Michigan theater is quite beautiful and a more intimate venue than some of the venues that he has played in the past (like Meadowbrook). He chatted and delivered a very personal concert. I was also amazed to see folks from every age group in attendance. If I could -- I would tell him that his music, and ballads have touched me more than he will ever know (as I am sure the other audience members felt the same way). He has been gifted with a fantastic voice as well as "storytelling / songwriting abilities." You touched my heart & soul once again and I still see why I am one of his biggest fans!

It is very hard to write a review on one of my favorite singer songwriters. I love the way GL can tell a story with such a nice melody. My expectation upon going to this, my first GL concert, was to hear Gordon play all of his hits and say goodnight. Is it better to hear a legend sing his origional hit songs at less than his best or not hear him at all? I choose the former. I am glad I got to hear Gordon and hope he will continue to connect with his many fans.

The recent concert by Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot was simply amazing. Ably backed by his long time band, Lightfoot delivered all the hits and then some. Although the voice has lost something over the years, there is no doubt that Lightfoot is the real deal. While less confident or vain artists might resort to artifice or technology to mask the effects of aging and experience, Lightfoot seems to say-" Take me as I am--you can have all I got left" ! This approach seems very real and much appreciated by his loyal audience. This was a magical night.

Incredible! That would describe the scope of the evening spent with Gordon Lightfoot and the members of his band. The way that this great singer weaved through his song list of well known hits and a few that I have yet to hear, was nothing short of magical ! There were favorites that brought the ageless listeners to the point of singing along and others that entranced some into reverting back to their not so distant past, down memory lane. The entertainment value was great as the performer gave his best for about 1 and a half hours;not bad for a man that's 72 years of age! Sure, the voice of this great singer is showing it's age but his tones were never off key and he didn't make up words to get through any songs either!

This was one of the most enjoyable concerts I've attended in recent years. Gordon Lightfoot's voice is showing age, but it's still the same voice that made him so popular in the 60s and 70s. Mr. Lightfoot is ageing as we all are but he still puts a great amount of effort into his perfomances. If you have loved Gordon Lighfoot's music thru the years, you would listen again to the words and envision a younger man singing just as we envision ourselves as younger and thrown back to a time or place where we first heard him play. It was a magical performance and if you have the chance, don't miss seeing him.

Hot Springs - Horner Hall - Great Music! Gordon Lightfoot has always been a great writer and singer. I only wish I could perform as well at the age of 72. I was concerned that he might not have the same singing voice, tone and quality after having an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a tracheotomy in 2002. His minor stroke in 2006 didn't seem to impair his ability to sing America's favorite folk hits. I was impressed and extremely glad I went. I think the best part was I didn't need earplugs to hear his entire band. What a relief to actually hear the music instead of being blasted by the music. The combination of hearing Mr. Lightfoot's songs over the music touched by heart!

I have seen Gordon Lightfoot several times through the years and was not disappointed this time around, in fact some of his songs sounded better with voice a little on the mellow side.

Great show! Just a great evening with the wife....and Gordon Lightfoot tunes. The entire band was perfect. There is something about a group of seasoned musicians that is just cool. Gordons voice is not what it used to be....but that makes the evening that more appreciated. He did not do one of my favorite songs....Circle Is Small. He covered everything else. Will see him next time he comes back to Dallas.

This was my first time at the Ryman theater and it was fabulous venue. This is my first time seeing Gordon Lightfoot perform and he was wonderful. Mr. Lightfoot added to the entertainment quality with his stories and commentary throughout the evening. His band was super too. Sure, there were a couple of times when his voice cracked a little on the high notes, but it in no way made the performance less great. The only thing that wasn't wonderful about the evening was the drunk guy behind me yelling and the drunk woman in front of me who thought it was great to stand up and dance, blocking the view for people behind her.

Great, relaxing evening listening to Gordon Lightfoot. His voice is still much the same, and his timeless ballads brought back a lot of old memories. I also saw his show about 16 months ago, and will go again, the next time he comes to town.

I was always a fan when I was young, and yes he did some of his better known music--but the overall emotion I felt watching and listening was sympathy and sadness. I found myself wondering why a 77 year old who has experienced so many serious health issues is still touring. He looked frail and gaunt. I am sure he enjoys performing, but honestly I would rather have remembered him and his voice the way they once were.

Gordon Lightfoot doesn't do this because he has to, he does it for us. To be able to see this living legend still performing for all of these years is something to treasure. The only dismay was not the performance by the legend, but by the loud, obnoxious, intoxicated girls sitting and yelling close by. I fault the venue for allowing this.

I knew before purchasing tickets for this concert that I would be attending an event of a much diminished singer, an aged performer well past his prime in terms of the range of his voice. Mr. Lightfoot has been through some very tough times, including an abdominal aortic aneurysm, and he Is approaching 78 years old. That known and said, he still performed beyond my expectations. He conversed with the audience and displayed a dapper sense of humor. If you were expecting, and thus demanding, perfection, this was not a concert for you. But if instead you expected an exquisite sampling of one of the greatest bodies of songwriting work known, then you were not disappointed. His band played wonderfully as well. Gordon Lightfoot is a poet as well as one of the finest songwriters. His words and music transcend the imperfections and ravages of age and declining health. He did not have to do this or any other concert. Why take the criticism and abuse of those who will never appreciate his work anyway? The high notes may no longer be reachable, and the voice may sound a bit frail, but the passion still thrives and the music is as great as always. There will never be another Gordon Lightfoot. These concerts should be cherished and enjoyed for the purity of his musical legacy.

For a performer going on 78 years old with the hectic schedule he has, Gordon Lightfoot once again gave a stellar performance! The band was well rehearsed and outstanding as always. With Gordon and his band, it is all about the music and the fans. He played timeless favorites such as WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD and IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND as well as less heard but very good songs, such as RESTLESS and SWEET GUENIVERE. Mostly every seat was taken in the 1,300 seat venue.

I was really looking forward to the show. Unfortunately there has been too much water under the bridge for Gordon Lightfoot. His voice is almost unrecognizable from his original singing voice. I am surmising that he is no longer able to sing a lot of his original tunes as he did not perform a lot of his standard material but instead chose lesser known songs. Overall, disappointing

Beautiful venue, actually puts the Landmark in Syracuse to shame. Not thrilled with the city of Utica over all from the drab overall appearance to the mess the roads are in\u2026.but I'd return for a concert at the Stanley. Gordon turns 77 in the next few days and without the wonderful band he has to carry him he would have a tough time. However I thoroughly enjoyed hearing him one more time.He sang his heart out and really hit it with the old faithfuls, paying tribute to the men who perished when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down 40 years ago. Explaining that he would be flying into the memorial at White Fish point, Michigan the very next day to be with families of those that were lost.

I'm almost afraid to review a concert by Gordon Lightfoot, simply because I'm not qualified. I never got the chance to see him in concert when he was younger, so I can't very well compare, but I will say this: It was a hot, sultry night in Tacoma, and the casino showroom was packed. Full house. When Gordon came out onto the stage, I was surprised at a couple of things...his slight build and the dark red (velour?) jacket he wore. How could he possible perform in this heat, dressed like that? I shouldn't have worried. The man isn't an icon for nothing. He was superb. Nimble on the guitar, check. Great backup band, check. Humorous banter between songs, check. And the songs...fabulous renditions of all the favorites, including Edmund Fitzgerald (which he called "the largest song" in the lineup) when he seamlessly segued into verse after verse without a hitch. His voice isn't as strong as it once was, but it's beautiful and exciting, just the same. No missed notes that I could hear. Some people have said that seeing him these days is sad, but to me, not seeing him would be sadder. Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian treasure, but so well-loved and respected worldwide. I was so hot and uncomfortable sitting 5 rows in front of him (great seats!) and wondered how he could pull off an entire show without so much as a five minute break...but he nailed it. It was an honor to be there and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to finally see him in person. Thank you, Gordon. xoxo

I have always wanted to see Gordon Lightfoot, and was excited to have the opportunity to see him at the awesome State Theater in Kalamazoo! I grew up listening to this talented singer/songwriter and it was wonderful hearing all of his hits live. The man s nearly 70 years old, and is definitely slowing down vocally, but it was still a great show. It's obvious that he loves what he does, and I hope he gets to play on for several more years

Gordon came in ready for his audience and, as always, began a performance aimed to please his fans. Although his voice is showing his age it is nonetheless classic Lightfoot. I personally enjoyed how he has adapted his new vocal range to suit the songs, both old and new. I would listen and, in my mind, compare the sound. I quickly became accustomed to the new variations and artistic reinterpretations. Lightfoot also interacted with the audience throughout his performance. On many occasions someone in the crowd would shout out a " We Love You Gord!" and you could see the reaction. Although I've seen GL many times before I always walk away feeling renewed.

As a birthday present for me last year, my wife and daughter chipped in to buy two tickets to a Lightfoot concert later that year . I'm glad they did. My wife and I looked forward to hearing Gord in person. Despite being a fan of the Canadian crooner since his United Artist days, I'd never heard him in concert. One of the regrets of my life is having chosen years ago to hear Bruce Cockburn in concert rather than Gordon. They were both in town at about the same time that year. I had stopped buying Gordon's new music at that point after listening to a bit of his Painter Passing Through album at a CD store where you could preview used CDs, with headphones, right in the store! I didn't like the sound of his voice after that brief exposure, so when both guys came to town (Pittsburgh#, I opted for Bruce. Bruce's concert was good, but I wish now I had heard Gordon instead. After hearing Gordon's voice at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, Pennsylvania in the summer of 2014, some 20-25 years after having heard Cockburn instead of Lightfoot, I was truly shocked by Gordon's voice! Frankly, compared to his earlier work--I'm talking 30 or 40 years ago, his voice was shot. You'll notice for example that he--artfully and gracefully, of course--avoids singing the high notes by replacing them with perfectly adequate lower notes. Still . . .. If at this point you're saying, "Well, duh. Whose voice wouldn't change after 30 or 40 years?" you're right. Still, hearing his voice this past summer was a bit of a disappointment. In spite of the shock, my wife and I did enjoy the concert and are glad we attended. Nevertheless, if you've never attended a Gordon Lightfoot concert and are assuming his voice is relatively unchanged from his Reprise heyday, think again. Despite his professionalism and obvious command of his fine music, as well as the excellent performance of his small band, the aesthetics of his voice may leave you disappointed. I remember many years ago having spotted an obscure, easy-to-miss sign at the side of the road while I was driving somewhere in the Greater Pittsburgh area. Attached to the top of a wooden stake#!#, it said simply, "Gordon Lightfoot in Concert." The venue may have been included in the advert, though I honestly don't recall. In retrospect, I should've looked further--but didn't--into that obscure advertisement. This was long before I had a PC to make the process of acquiring that information quickly and easily, however. Consequently, I just passed on that concert. Now I wish I hadn't.

This review may be longer than most, though Gordon Lightfoot is unbelievable. He has a sound that is unique and will continue performing until no one comes. That will never happen. The Saban was basically sold out. We have seen him many times and yes, he is getting on in age, but his drive is definitely there. His music requires you to listen to the words and phases. If you listen, it will require thought and interpretation, much of which you may not be able to correctly. Each person would come up with a different meaning. He is a minstrel. He makes you think if you listen.

Gordon Lightfoot is a master musician and performer. His songs are timeless; from folk to rock his concert lineup of songs blend really well together. It is such an enjoyable evening to spend with Gordon Lightfoot and the band. A concert you don't have to wear ear plugs to listen to. I'm a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan. I grew up playing his music on my guitar. I didn't expect him to be in full voice at this point, but it was way less than I expected. Most often it was a staccato mumble. If you know the songs, then it's no problem filling in the words and notes. I brought a friend who had never heard him before and she said she couldn't understand anything. The band was great. The guitarist, Carter Lancaster, was a standout for me. The venue was full and everyone was appreciative and thankful for the experience and Gordon's body of work. His poetry of lyrics and musical talent is undeniable and unforgettable.

We saw Gordon Lightfoot for the first time at The Saban Theatre mainly because I listened to him growing up and (even he would admit) he should have died years ago. As usual with the older acts I have seen (from Neil Diamond to Anthrax) I know all the old stuff, but the act doesn't play enough of it, so I've never heard of 1/2 the set. Plus, Gord's golden voice died somewhere in the 1980s, but, that's the way it goes. This was also our first time at The Saban. It is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT experience from going to a club on The Sunset Strip or The Troubadour. Theater seating, expensive drinks, you can hear a pin drop between songs, older crowd, no ringing in your ears after the show. Gordon hit the stage right at 8:00 (no opening act) and the Theatre did a HARD CLOSE at 10:00, so the stampede for the front door literally started at 9:58. The Flynn Building is the most convenient place to park (right next door), so it's the most expensive at $12. But, you should take your time getting there because it will take you at least 1/2 an hour to get out. But, we were able to play all the songs Mr. Lightfoot didn't play off of Gord's Gold vol. 1 while we waited.

The music and musicianship were great, the songs of course were great, but Lightfoot's voice is showing the wear and tear of 79 years of life, and of the tracheotomy he had in 2002. Still, he was relaxed and engaging and it was a pleasant evening. Ultimately however, the lack of power in his voice made for a disappointing evening.

First time I saw Gordon was at Emory about 50 years ago, and he was great then. Not so now. At 79 he is well over the hill, and needs to retire. First six songs or so were unintelligible. Only ones I could recognize were the ones I knew the words to. He also didn't play the guitar on most of the songs, relying on this lead guitarist to carry the load. It's about what I expected, but it made us feel sad for him. We left at intermission.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to get this great concert. Gordon Lightfoot is still giving people a great performance. The venue was very, very good. My disappointed reference is in relation to the concert itself. Mr. Lightfoot's better days are way behind him. His illnesses from years ago and or his age made understanding him very, very difficult. If you didn't know the song already, understanding him was very difficult.
