Pretty Lights

Electronic musician Pretty Lights, known on his tax forms as Colorado native Derek Vincent Smith, took a different route with his 2013 companion albums A Color Map of the Sun and Live Studio Sessions From A Color Map of the Sun, but he continues to be all about sound and lights on his supporting tour. Instead of chopping up samples of existing music for his new albums, Smith created his own samples by recording musicians playing vintage instruments direct to tape (playing many of the instruments himself), then pressing the results to vinyl. From there he went digital to sample the music he'd recorded and to build his sound collages. The two 2013 albums were also the first Pretty Lights albums to be sold commercially in non-digital form.

Being my first PL experience, I had no idea what I was in for. From that first bass strike like a fist to your chest, to the turntable's fine rub and spin, my body was rocked. The lights were mesmerizing. Seriously, the choreography of the bulbs was sensuous, palpitating, and earned rank with the band's name.

This was my first time seeing Pretty Lights live, and I was blown away by the overstimulation of music and sound that comprised the show. I would definitely call it "amazing", if not possibly "life-changing". Everyone in the audience was having a great time too and it was easy to feel the positive auras that emanated from those in attendance. I made sure to record some videos on my phone so that I could prove to myself later on that it did indeed happen and it wasn't just a figment of my imagination.

So I go there, ordered a drink, and then all of a sudden Charlie Tuna of Jurassic 5 is introduced! I had no idea he was going to be opening up for Pretty Lights and it was a pleasant surprise. He definitely killed it. Then Pretty Lights came on... my mind was blown. I love the Electric Factory and it is one of my favorite venues in Philadelphia. Definitely 5 stars!

Both artists, Nit Grit and Pretty Lights, put on awesome shows. The light show by PL was better than DJ Tiesto's set-up although I'm pretty sure Tiesto has been on the scene much longer. The Oakdale was really easy to find but be ready for exorbitant drink costs ($13 for a 24oz can of bud) and ATM fees ($4).

Everything was the best and i wish to see more. The police and staff where so cool and did not poke at stupid stuff like most places are starting to do. The pat down at the door was fast and respectful as it could possibly be . And the police that where doing it where all like "Have a good time and enjoy yourself " to everyone. His show in Miami tore it up. I was there visiting for spring break and did not have Ultra tickets (at the moment, at least :)) and bought Pretty Lights tickets basically last minute. Blew my mind away. He really knows how to control a crowd. I'd see him again if I could.

Bottom line, this show was excellent. Pretty Lights executes in both ways that his fan base has come to know him. Incredible music mixed with an amazing light show. Not much else needs to be said beyond that. If you like trip hop/dance/electronic music, his show is a must see for fans of the genre. His opening acts were also excellent in that they got the fans excited, while still leaving them with the energy they needed to keep the party going after midnight!

The show was incredible. I'll never forget it. I'm still on a high. The energy and vibes were magical. I will never miss Derek when he's in Chicago. Exodus ft. The Soul Rebels... Opening up with Hot Like Sauce night 2... More Important Than Michael Jordan... Chicago Bulls Intro... ugh. I couldn't have asked for a better setlist either night. *CON: the drink prices are ridiculously high. I highly recommend packing a cooler, parking in the VIP parking lot, and walking over to the lakefront before entering a show to pregame. It'd also be cool if we didn't have to take off our shoes at security but other than that the venue was good and there isn't a bad viewing spot.

Decided the day before to fly from New York for this concert and I seriously could not be happier with my decision. The venue, the people, and most of all THE MUSIC was so on point. Security was extremely stiff but at least friendly, but be careful kids. All in all, highly highly recommend.

I'm not into Edm what so ever but I saw that Lil Uzi Vert was playing and he's easily one of my top 5 favorite artists. So $100 for 2 tickets was worth it to me. I sat through 2 hours of music and once lil uzi was supposed to come up the dj said "lil uzi couldn't make it tonight" Don't you think that a Facebook or Instagram post to let people know that they aren't going get what they paid for would've been a good gesture? I saw constant adds leading up to the concert saying "lil uzi vert live in Reno" but nothing letting me know that he wasn't going to make it. Not even a warning when I got there? I don't think it's too much for me to ask for a refund. Hope to hear a word back.

I never write reviews, but have to for this event. The Event Security threw out personal items that were in no shape or form threatening - I.E. - opened cigarette boxes and chap sticks. If you wanted to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, you had to wait in line for over an hour and a half because there was only one beer tent. Once you did receive a beer, you had to remain in the tied off area and could not hold a beer while listening to your favorite artist. All set times were delayed an hour which wasn't the biggest of deals, but overall - we had a terrible time aside from being with good friends and making our own fun. I would never return to this event again. Do not waste the money.

I bought a VIP ticket for just Saturday. It promised private bathrooms, air conditioned tents, separate entrance, and a closer, separate view of the stage. I found none of these expect, the separate view of the stage which was not any closer, nor was it being monitored for only VIP guest entering so anyone could walk up and stand there. I've been to other festivals and gotten VIP. All of those festivals provided all that they promised, and even went on to provide refreshments and goodie bags full of cool stuff for VIP guests. I was extremely disappointed with Electric Adventures "VIP" package, and feel like I wasted a lot of money buying VIP when I could have bought a two day general admission pass for the same price and done the same thing. The festival was a lot of fun and the performers were great but I will not be purchasing VIP from here ever again.

The lineup was amazing and the VIP section was such a wonderful get-away on new years eve night - complete with couches, food and fun social people. the Venue was filled with beautiful costumed and dazzling people. The music was enchanting as well as fulfilling any true Bass-Head's need for a base-fix Pretty Lights is my favorite DJ an his set was so good that night - I felt he played his heart out and really connected with the audience though we were massive. This NYE event was beyond fun. There were three rooms of which to choose from, all with different music styling. There was a face painting station, giant light filled flowers that moved to the music, and dancing everywhere! My favorite was the room playing the rag time mash up with interludes of dancing/singing burlesquers. Beats Antique was amazing as usual, with an astounding performance, I only wished that they had a longer set and played during the midnight call of the new year. Great show - thank you to all who contributed to this fun night.

Pretty Lights puts on an unforgettable show when he plays solo but add the live band and the performance becomes epic. With break science playing with pretty lights you have a supergroup comparable to the likes of Lettuce. Supervision opened the show right and Herobust turned it up a notch until Pretty Lights blew the roof off. Perfect selection of old and new songs.

Pretty Lights at Red Rocks is undeniably the most incredible and mesmerizing musical experience one could ever attend. It seriously was the best concert I have ever been to, and I don't think that it will ever be topped. The live band was amazing, it's unreal to hear sick electronic tracks brought to life by trombone, trumpet, piano, drums, and guitar along with the synth. The lighting team really outdid themselves that night, the lasers we amazing. The Pretty Lights team (The Illuminators) did a great job bringing water to us thirsty dancers too! Overall, it really was the most beautiful and incredible night of my life. Well worth the money for the trip

Overall the show was simply amazing. Pretty Lights is definitely one of my favorite artists/musicians and he did an awesome performance and the lazers/lights were mind blowing. This was my first time going to an actual concert at the US Cellular Coliseum and even though security was a little weird about glow sticks, etc the seating and arrangement of the venue was great. I don't think there is a bad seat in the place. We were up a little ways but we could see perfectly. Good venue, AMAZING performance, hope Pretty Lights comes this way again soon :)

Pretty Lights is well within the top five best shows I've even been to. While he didn't have all of his lights it was still visually stunning and aurally orgasmic. He played classics and even a couple of newer songs. From the Bulls entrance to finally moving you couldn't have asked for anything more (except his remix of All of the Lights). He went hard for 1 3/4 hours mixing with fluidity and passion. He made sure to interact with the crowd but made sure music was the number one priority. If you ever get the chance go! If your not a fan of electro, go anyway! It's an amazing experience.

The UCF arena is way over priced especially for the lack of beer, and cigs allowed. It was less than half full... Most students couldnt afford to go, luckily I bought mine on the cheap radio day. 4th time i've seen Pretty Lights, loved it and he threw down hard. This concert was amazing. I'm not from Nashville so I didnt know what to expect from the venue (Nashville Municiple Auditorium), but it was actually a great venue. There was plenty of room on the floor infront of the stage if you like raging with everyone. Or there is seating around the stage like an arena if you just want to chill. And for less than $30 you got a fantastic show from the whole set. I hadn't heard any of the guys on the set list except for Pretty Lights and Nit Grit and they did not disappoint. I have been to other PL shows and this was one of the best. The other guys (Porter Robinson, Zeds Dead, & Cherub) were all amazing. The atmosphere they all brought to the arena was outstanding. Great show all around with absolutely no complaints. All of the guys on the list are awesome and are worth checking out if you get the chance.

Even though it was cold and rainy, we packed the house! The light show was amazing, and the music was of course way better (and louder) than when I listen at home. The floor got pretty wild, but I always felt safe. Only downside: the concert was so short! I think he was cold! This was my second electronic music concert, and honestly I thought Avicii (indoors) was more fun, but this was definitely worth seeing!

The artists were most excellent, we got in quickly, and while lines were long, Staff handled everything professionally. This was my fourth time seeing FlyLo (always incredible), and I loved Pretty Lights, Pumpkin, and the rest of the gamut as well. The event was more *normal* while I tend to prefer more underground events, yet it was still quite fun. The decorations were pretty sick too. Good event choice for welcoming in the new year

Absolutely horrible. The headliner (who's music I have enjoyed outside of this event) played horrible music and the following DJ train wrecked. The intermissions between acts were painfully long and boring. There was only one room, so it wasn't like I could escape the lame music. Decorations were alright, but failed in comparison to previous years of this event.

It was a very very cool show, good organization and great people. One of the drawbacks was that they took the caps of water bottles, which sucked. Otherwise the artists were awesome!
