The National

The National

Judging from the band’s current popularity, it’s hard to believe that it took a bit of time for Ohio indie rock band The National to find their audience. They had moderate success with their self-titled, alt-country debut album in 2001, but after years of honing their Americana indie rock sound to perfection, they released the the albums Alligator (2006) and The Boxer (2007) – and these works would catapult The National to international fame. Their melancholy, often politically-themed songs coincided with the social unrest surrounding the 2008 U.S.

I am a frequent concert goer (at least monthly) and the Civic Opera House acoustics were superb for the multilayered sound of the The National. Despite the size of the venue, the acoustics were incredible. The show felt intimate as you could hear every horn, drum kit snare, and tambourine rattle. Truly a memorable experience by a band that should be seen.

I saw the National play at Boston's new House of Blues this past May, and it was without a doubt one of the best concerts I've ever been to. They're amazing musicians and play one hell of a live show! There music is widely varied, with brilliant textural contrasts driven largely by their drummer (who's fantastic). If you like their music you'll love their live show.

Matt Berninger was nothing short of phenomenal at this show: he screamed, he ran across the stage, he made wild gestures, and, at one point, even jumped down into the crowd, singing among his fans, offering them his wine glass, and surprising everyone with his intense emotions in such open physical display. It was incredible!

They're music is epic. And in a place like the new House of Blues in Boston, their sounds echoed through my body and mind in a way that I had not felt while listening to them on my ipod. See them live - you'll love it.

Missed the opening act, unfortunately, but not the BEST BAND EVER. That being The National! They were as dynamic as ever! As usual The National did not dissappoint! They played with great energy and passion - most of the songs from their new album, High Violet; also they played songs from Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers and from Boxer. For all the energy they were giving out, the crowd in Raleigh was pretty lame. Well, they were until Matt did his characteristic move to join the audience! At the penultimate song, Terrible Love, he stepped down from the stage and came singing out in the crowd. He went back to the middle section (where I happened to be) and joined the fans in the seats - singing all the way. I happened to be one of the lucky ones that he made eye contact with as he was standing on the seats in song. He grabbed my hand and lead me to the aisle where he hopped down from the seats!!! It was TRULY AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE COOLEST WAY! The National followed up their powerful Terrible Love with an acapella version of Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! Matt Berninger tested the strength of his voice with triumphant success!! Overall, this was one of the best concerts I have been to. Although, I may be slightly biased - I did get to hold MB's hand! :)

On Wednesday night, the Brooklyn-based indie rock band The National took the stage at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City for the first time. Eager fans, which had purchased tickets months in advance, stood waiting on Valentine Street in heightened anticipation hours before the doors opened. They were not disappointed. When the band members opened with Runaway, the room was very dim with the violet backdrop curtain being the prominent visual attraction. The opener, with its subdued guitar riffs and lack of percussion, showcased vocalist Matt Berninger s distinctive baritone voice and established a closeness with the audience which would remain throughout the show. With the band s next song, Anyone s Ghost, the crowd was introduced to the attention-grabbing drum work of Bryan Devendorf. Devendorf reminded the audience why he is debatably the best drummer in the indie rock genre by supplementing the music with unrelenting rhythms and forceful drum fills like those found in Bloodbuzz Ohio and Conversation 16. Another notable feature of the band s music was the wide variety of instruments used. In addition to the standard instruments played by the Dessner and Devendorf brothers, big parts were given to Padma Newsome (violin and viola), Kyle Resnick (trumpet), and Ben Lanz (trombone and trumpet). These supporting musicians added a vital flavor to the music and even became the center of attention at times such as the brass fanfare outro of Fake Empire. Amidst all the musicians on stage, Berninger was a show in and of himself, creating the persona of a distressed young adult in some songs and an unstable madman in others. During Afraid of Everyone he seemed close to tears, and while screaming the titular lyrics of Squalor Victoria he appeared to be close to ripping out his own hair. Berninger showed a lot of crowd interaction throughout the evening, but the climax of the show came during encore and setlist staple Mr. November when Berninger climbed down from the stage and made his way through the crowd singing the chorus while the crowd held his microphone cord above their heads. When The National ended their 19-song setlist with Terrible Love, the crowd showered them with a prolonged applause and those seated in the balcony gave them a standing ovation. The show was a tremendous success, and the band members seemed to enjoy themselves, leaving the crowd hopeful their first visit would not be their last.

The National quite simply rocked my socks. They sounded great, as good as the albums. Can't give the show 5 stars though as the opening act was pretty bad. That guy's levels were way off and you could barely hear the vocals. Still, it was worth sitting through it to see The National play like true rock stars.

I was so psyched for this show that I drove from Utah to see it. Okkervil River's set was solid (if not a tad short), and had I been there to see just them, it would have been worth it. But then The National took the stage. Incredible. I've recently been thinking about what my favorite band is and The National have settled themselves at the top of my list.

The opening night of The National's 2-night concert series was phenomenal. From the opening song "Runaway" to the finale "Terrible Love," The National far surpassed any expectation I had as a live band. The Dessner twins balance tolerance and teasing with regard to lead singer Matt Berninger's drunken antics, screwups, and getting lost in the crowd during "Terrible Love" before disappearing into the ether. I couldn't tell if Berninger was really drunk or really sad or if it was all for performance, but all I wanted to do was give him a hug and tell him "it's all right, man!" As a band they are really solid and take risks during live performances, which don't always work, but the constant creative element in their musicianship is greatly appreciated. It's as if they are never satisfied with how any given song ended up on the recordings and are in a constant state of tweak. I look forward to seeing them again next month in Kansas City!

The National started out with a slower songs and the acoustics in DAR Constitution Hall did them justice - they sounded great. The band had great fan interaction throughout the show... Matt Berninger (The National's frontman) high fived someone in the front seat and walked out into the floor seats during one of the songs. Their encore performance blew the roof off of the Hall. Matt literally climbed into the upper deck and began parading around through the ecstatic fans. Awesome. They played a great mix of new and old songs. This show is a must-see!

This concert was amazing. For me, the opening act is usually forgettable and is in place simply to kill time and create suspense. With The Antlers, however, this was not the case. They put on a great show in their own right, sounding like a mix between Explosions in the Sky and Paper Rival. Aaron Dessner, one of The National's guitarists, later said that they filled the venue with just 3 guys making music, and it took 8 people for The National. The main act completely surpassed my expectations. The set list was amazing, featuring almost all of 'Boxer' and 'High Violet' with a few louder, more energetic songs from 'Cherry Tree' and 'Alligator' mixed in. The music all seemed to delightfully 'pop'. On their albums, the strings and horns all seem to blend in together and it's tough to pick out any single instrument at times, but in a live performance everything sort of rises to the surface and you can hear how amazing each musician is in his own right. The real star of the show was Matt Beringer, The National's frontman and singer. Beringer was an astounding showman, on par with Dave Grohl. He came out in all likelihood drunk, and continued to drink a bottle of white wine rather than water to keep himself fresh. Because he doesn't play any instrument, whenever he wasn't singing he would back up from the mic and have what would best be described as schizophrenic fits. Twice he jumped down into the crowd and sort of moseyed on through while singing, at which point every eye in the venue was on him. The banter between songs was either quiet and polite (the Dessners), or loud, funny, and slightly raunchy (Beringer). This was the first concert my significant other has ever been to, she loved it. I'm glad I chose this one, because I did too.

The National put on a top-notch show. They're a band to be experienced in small-medium size venues, so check them out before they're playing all huge places. It was indie meets anthem rock, and all of their songs took on a whole new level of intensity. One of the best shows I've seen.

The opening band played less than 30 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous. I really wanted to see them (Big Thief). Tickets said 8pm...I was inside at 8:10...they ended at 8:25...nobody had even showed up yet. the National was fine and played a good set ( I've seen them before), but the singer lost his voice after the third song and just screeched his way through the rest of the set. The band sounded good. He also seems like he's in the middle of a mental breakdown (it's hard to feel bad for him really...it must be sooo hard to be a rock star). The venue is in a great location in downtown Asheville but have absurd policies regarding their overpriced drinks. You have to pay for a wristband (which is stupid). You can't buy more than one drink at a time so if your wife wants to watch the show, you can't buy her a drink and also one for yourself. But...hint...you CAN buy a drink and go immediately to the back of the line and buy another...apparently there's no policy against doing that as many times as you want (as long as you're not holding a drink when you buy another). That is stupid and they should change those policies. To be fair, the pros to the venue are location, plenty of bathrooms and plenty of drink stands...and the sound was good. Overall, the show and venue were disappointing and I left feeling like I had wasted my money...I will avoid U.S. Cellular Center at all costs in the future. I won't ever care to see The National again. I'd like to see Big Thief sometime but I'd need more than three songs to justify a $60 ticket.

I love the National s music- but seeing them live was just icing on the cake. The concert was in support of their newest album Sleep Well Beast so, needless to say, they played a lot of the cuts which was great because it is an awesome album. They also played a fair number of their past hits and had the crowd on their feet for most of the concert. The two drummers stole the show- wow!! What talented musicians. All in all - a great experience and I look forward to seeing them again on their next tour.

WOW! What a night - great weather, the Venue is wonderful with the city skyline in the background, ample bathrooms, the seating is laid out very nicely. All that, and then The National came out, put on a smooth and rocking show. Everyone was standing, feeling the rhythm, singing if they knew the song, and enjoying it to the Max. I first heard the National song 'Bloodbuzz Ohio" in 2016 on WXRT. This song blew me away! I ended up buying virtually all of their CDs over the next 15 months and was excited to score tickets to this concert at an incredible venue - The Civic Opera House in Chicago. My wife and I enjoyed the concert very much but I was very disappointed that they didn't play Bloodbuzz Ohio during their 2 1/2 hr. set - especially since I know they'd been playing that as an encore for the last several years. They played a lot of Sleep Well Beast along with a nice cross section of songs from their various CDs.

This was my 4th show on the Sleep Well Beast tour...Forest Hills-NYC, Philadelphia, Montreal 1 , and finally the 12/8 Montreal show. This last show was the best of the four! Got 2nd row on left side of stage. After standing to wait for show for almost 90 minutes, I was not disappointed. Crowd had tremendous energy, was mostly friendly to an American! Met 4 nice women including 1 die hard National fan like me. Band sounded great and fed off crowd. Setlist was amazing, too. Wasp Nest and Rylan were two highlights!

The large digital screens on either side of the stage came on and showed "the national" watching us, watch them. They moved out of the hallway and onto the stage. The crowd went wild. Because I stand 6'7" tall, I had a great line of sight watching the guys as they went from song to song. After about five or so tunes I decided to give the smaller people behind me a better view of the stage so I worked my way back out of the densely packed crowd. By then the sun had gone down and the tree-strung carnival like lights were on. If you have the opportunity to see any band at the Prospect Park Bandshell I'd highly recommend it. It's a unique and great venue. If you have the chance to see a great live band play there, like the national, then you will have a night to remember.

OK, I'm a fan. But to say that The National didn't absolutely rock the house on Tuesday night would be a criminal understatement. They brought it, and left everything on stage. Just a stellar concert, including the surprising light show and multimedia effects. And, the real surprise of the night was opener Daughter, who were quite talented and drew far more crowd attention than I though was possible for a relatively unheard-of band. Overall, the best way I could imagine spending a Tuesday night.

I've seen The National twice before (Hollywood Bowl & The Greek Theater) and love their live shows. I've seen other shows at The Shrine (recently the Avett Bros. from the floor) and have enjoyed them. But I was so disappointed in this particular show that I had to leave early -- and it broke my heart to do so. Problem? An absolute wall of sound that had none of the subtlety for which one of my favorite bands is famous. All I could hear was distorted, over-dubbed guitar and none of the horns, vocals, and I even struggled to hear the drums. How can this be? Maybe it was the balcony versus the floor (my friends on the floor said the sound grew better as the performance went on), and maybe its the Shrine's notoriously challenging acoustics, but my date and I were so overcome we had to leave. What's worse is that this was her introduction to The National and it turned her off despite my "This really isn't how they sound -- Ever," plea. Bummer all around.

What a show , I have always heard that The National put on a good show but really that is an understatement , their show was Great . We saw the Documentary Mistaken for Strangers ( which I do not recommend ,pointless & dumb) but then the band got ready and I got dead center front row& without a barricade made for an incredible night. I only casually listened to their music but the show won me over as a big fan , even if you are not familiar with their music it is not necessary to enjoy the live show as they rocked , were engaging as Matt took my cell phone/camera for a song & even gave me a high five after , I was the only one too = ) Loved the show and will definitely see them again !!

When I first bought my tickets for The National (who at the time had no opener), it was before I went to the Local Natives show. At the Local Natives show they handed out flyers promoting The National concert, and who does it say is opening? The Local Natives, that's who. The National show was a two-for-one for me and it was wonderful. The pavillion was BEAUTIFUL, I didn't like how they didn't give out a cup of tap water because it was really hot, but other than that, it was spectacular. Not only did the Local Natibes deliver a beautiful performance, I loved watching Matt drink on stage. Oh no, it didn't stop there. The man walks into the crowd and continues to sing "I won't fuck us over, I'm Mr. November" while everyone got to touch this beautiful angel as he sang his lungs out. I felt like crying watching him, and gettin to touch him? AMAZING. Loved the show. By far, my favorite.

Yes, the name of the venue is also The National! Very intimate, historic theater in downtown Richmond. First time seeing The National live. Was an excellent mix of their catalog, drawing most heavily from High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me. Also included a few numbers from Boxer, Alligator, and Cherry Tree. Love the use of live horns, lighting, and video imagery behind the band. The band played a tight, two hour set. Great mix of their new songs from "Trouble will Find Me" and rest of their collection. Even played "All the wine" from Cherry Tree. Wish the horn section was a little louder and the lead guitar was not as loud, as Bryce drowns out the horns many times. I love this band, their sound, their roots, i am afraid they will get huge in the coming future and play big venues , and the rest is history , that is why i went to see them five times already about this particular show i loved what they did with the moving images in the back ground with the cameras angles and lighting , still feels intimate . i predict they will reach the heavens ;-0

The National are musical geniuses and I've loved their music for years, but they have really reached a new peak in their live performances. The band is so tight, and frontman Matt Berninger is so out-there in an incredibly controlled way. Now they even have a fancy light show and video projections! The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is well set up for aging fans of indie rock bands in that it has a balcony with actual SEATS that winds all the way around, so if you get there early enough, you can actually sit close to the band without having to stand for hours. If you've never seen The National live, you must, must go when they come to your city - it's an unforgettable experience!

Nothing like The National to make a a night go from great to amazing! These guys ALWAYS deliver (this is my third time seeing them this year, Coachella included). Matt's jump off stage into the crowd was one of the highlights of the night, and his offbeat comments about coke and grapes were hilarious. I believe a couple of musicians were missing in this performance, and that was evident particularly during Fake Empire, but they still sounded great, eve though they already look a bit tired from their long tour. Hang on guys! You are almost done. Those last NY dates are going to be hard... too many dates in a row. Anyway, yes, they were great and I would highly recommend anyone who appreciates good, heart-felt and poetic rock to check these guys out. Opening bands were great too. All in all, I wish I could do it all again today.

What's not to like about the Hollywood Bowl. Sharon was a pleasant surprise. Fantastic voice and great energy on stage. Neko couldn't get off the stage fast enough. Sorry but I thought she bombed. She even looked bored. The National was so powerful. An amazing sound. Fresh and full of energy. I would like to have seen more video of them on stage rather than graphics on the monitors, for us in the cheap seats.

I had been waiting to see The National for about four years and they did not disappoint. Song #18 (Terrible Love) saw Matt jump off stage, onto the barricade and then into the crowd. Only thing missing was "About Today". Can't wait to see them again

I was amazed at how much I enjoyed the show. I liked them before, but I was concerned they might be too mellow to really put on a good concert. I was very wrong. They rocked.

I thought the show was great, the venue is one of my favorites in terms of size and acoustics, in this case I bought not so great seats and still could see the band just great and hear the music at a descent sound, no need for earplugs and such. Loved how Matt jumped into the crowd to sign afraid of everyone. They played a good amount of time, the event ends early as the concert is in a University and there is an issue with playing too late, was great for me so I could still go back to North Park and find some good craft beer bars open.

I've heard so much good stuff about the National over the years I figured I might as well check them out. Local Natives was a good opener - love the drumming. The National had much more energy than I expected. Not boring at all and lots of people were really into it. Great show!

Overall, we enjoyed the show, however - the main singer must have had a cold or was tired from singing on the road. His voice cracked on the high notes and sometimes he quit singing for a few lines. He was also drinking alcohol on stage at one point threw his drink in the crowd. We enjoy The National, but we would not buy tickets for a concert from them without assurance that his voice quality was up to snuff. Also, speaking of alcohol, the lines for refreshments at the venue were horrible. Each line must have been 30-40 people long. We did not buy any beer or food due to the long lines.

The Open Air Theater is a great place to see a band. Staff was nice, food and drinks were reasonably priced. The band sounded good, except the lead singer of the National who was having an onstage meltdown while being drunker than usual. Highly recommend seeing a band here!

The National have a great recorded sound, but was uncertain how it would translate live. Well, they are an incredible live act!!! Matt Berninger, the front man and lead vocalist is a charismatic performer who connects with the audience. The sound is full, precise and rockin'

This was my third time seeing The National live. They have an amazing live presence and I would always highly recommend their shows. The evening of October 12th they had a bad show. Matt Berninger had a rough time leading the show as he normally does. Not sure if he was really sick or wrecked his voice the night before at the Hollywood Bowl. In the end I actually enjoyed the opening band Daughter more. I came wanting to connect with The National and left feeling almost abandoned.

Not only are the seats closest to the stage the best, because they allow you closest access to a store where you can buy your own bottle of wine, but I had a great time because the lineup was so good. Unfortunatley I missed their opener Daughter, but when The National came on, I felt like part of the crowd.

The National delivered. They played over two hours, extended songs, played a different set list than other stops on the tour, engaged with the audience (at one point Matt walked into the crowd!), and played an exceptional encore consisting of FIVE songs! Other bands should follow the lead of this group.

This was an incredible show. Not only were the bands (Daughter and The National) incredible, but the venue was gorgeous and cleanly, the crowd was polite and wasn't too rowdy, and the band wasn't late to get on stage. I've been to concerts where the band takes their time and are an hour late to start which is just irritating. Daughter went on stage literally at 7. I would HIGHLY recommend and I will definitely be back.

The concert was very good. Good enthusiasm and energy. Matt Berninger's voice seemed a little horse at times, may be doing too many events in a row. Nevertheless, the band gave an excellent performance. The addition of the horns adds quite a bit to the band's performance. The five-song encore was excellent. I was caught by surprise when Matt did not enter the crowd on Mr. November but instead did so on the following song, Terrible Love. As to the venue, the tickets and advertisements said 7:00 pm show time. Instead, the doors did not open until 7:00. Shame on us for arriving early at 6:00! The warm up group went on at 8:00 and The National took the stage at 9:00. The Masonic Temple should be clearer in their communications.

The National puts on a great show. From Matt Berninger's weird dancing and funny quips to the gorgeous lighting, the entire show was amazing. The whole band sounds great and you can really hear each individual instrument, unlike some shows where everything is so loud it all kind of blends together. Only downside was there was no general admission standing area, only seats.

Read all the positive reviews of The National. Bought three of their records. Thought I'd like the concert...but I think the music is monotonous, and this was brought out to the max during the concert. I'm probably the only one, though, because the crowd was rapturous with joy, standing and swaying and loving every minute. Not me. If you're a fan, go! Me, I'll probably spin the disks now and again. But not too often...

I have never quite experienced something like like this before, i was inspired by the national tonight for an experience that was not quite anything I ve ever experienced, The national is my favorite band and they exceeded my expectation and this venue was something that I ve never thought that would actually cross my path as it was so intimate so unexpected and I am so excited that I was a part of it\u2026 I cannot wait until the show in December in Philadelphia to experience it,again , Because it was not something that I ve ever actually experienced and I cannot wait until I can be a part of again, if was so surreal!

The National put on a great show. More energy than I was expecting. Mostly new songs, with a few older ones mixed in. Long encore. Berninger is .. entertaining. Opener -- Daughter -- was awesome too. Venue is terrible. Attempting to enforce NFL-style bag rules, but doing so in the worst possible way.
