I always wanted to see the musical in NY and when I went to NY, the musical was no longer available to see. Then when I heard they were going on tour, especially in my hometown, I had to go. My sis and I went front row! We both purchased shirts for first musical when saw in our hometown. The music is uplifting and motivating. It made me want to achieve my dreams and not be ashame of who I am. The actors and actresses song from the heart, mind, body, and soul. You can't help but sing-a-long. The dancers were on point and just made me wanted to get on stage and dance. They move with such rhythm and grace. It was sexy! The story behind it teaches you how life was back in the day for music between blacks and whites. You learn to pursue your dream with every inch of courage you have. Despite what others may think. It's about taking chances. Inspiring.

Over all, this was a good production, with a very impressive cast of actors and dancers. I was entertained. The Southern accents were a bit over acted, and didn't really capture the Memphis "vibe." In other words, as a life time Memphian, I'd say the characters sounded more like they were from North Carolina (and yes, the dialect is different). I think this happens a lot with actors that are not from this part of the country. But we get the point, and "bless their hearts" for trying. Also, while the band was certainly good, you have to remember that Memphis is a hotbed of talent and created the Memphis Sound. So...sorry, what I heard was totally NYC (which is not a bad thing. It's just NOT Memphis). There is a vibe to the music that came from here. Maybe if you'd used some Memphis musicians for your performances here, you would have been able to capture it. And yeah, they are educated, can read and write charts, and STILL play them with more feel and soul (The Memphis Sound).

Musical theater is often best when dealing with societal issues. Memphis deals with race relationships in the 1950s, and while not nearly as taboo today as it was then, the writing and performance put us in that situation and did it with great effect. Good humor and great music, performed by exceptional individuals, who had me near tears at the end of the first act.

Memphis tells the story of the early days of rock and r&b through the prism of race relations in the early 50s. This is not a jukebox musical but rather has original songs that fit both the story and the times. The cast is very talented and enthusiastic, set and lighting great, and sound fantastic. The story is both uplifting and heartbreaking. It's a perfect touring show relying on story and performance to create a memorable theatre experience. I missed it on Broadway and am glad I got to see it.

I found Memphis to be very entertaining, but it won't stick out as one of the great Broadway Musicals. There is not much of a plot (think Hairspray moved from Baltimore to the deep south, same time frame, same racial themes) but there doesn't need to be. It is mostly a vehicle for the music and songs. I think it is about 95% music and 5% dialogue. Most musicals have at least one song that makes it as a popular song outside of the play ("Memory", "Tonight", "Oklahoma", and "I Could Have Danced All Night" come to mind), but so far not so with Memphis. Good lively music, very talented cast, but nothing about Memphis rises to the superlative.

Those of us in the real Memphis, like our hero Huey, don't always have access to New York City. So, I would like to extend a huge Hockadoo Thank You to the touring cast of Memphis the Musical for blessing us with the first stop on the nation wide tour. What you'll find here is a beautiful combination of sounds from Chuck Berry, James Brown, The Temptations, and Jerry Lee Lewis, yet these legendary sounds are set to theatrical dance them that blends Broadway and Beale St. in ways I could never imagined possible. Felicia Boswell and Bryan Fenkart create beautiful music together, literally and figuratively. The supporting cast is equally "fantastical." (You'll see what I mean.) "Memphis Lives In Me" will make any Memphian weep with pride. And don't listen to the naysayers who insist Huey's character isn't realistic. Those of us in the South all know someone who speaks, acts, and has the naivete of the adorable Huey Calhoun. Where would music be without the wonderful R&B music of the Black Memphis community or without the brave White DJ's like Dewey Phillips (the real DJ on whom the character of Huey Calhoun is loosely based)? The only problem with this one is that it might consume your life! You'll want to go again and again! I am proud to say I saw the show on its first run of its first night at The Orpheum in Memphis. I will never forget it!

The story was great, music great, dancing fantastic. Overall the performers were very talented with the exception of the lead actress. Her acting was good but her singing was average which didn't go with the theme of the play. Just saw Dirty Dancing and the Color Purple this play was better than both of them but CP lead was much stronger vocally and that wasn't the main idea of that show. DD has a performer that with one song brings more applause then the main characters. The show is awesome lead actress not strong vocally.

The show "Memphis" was done nicely. The audience at the Warner Theatre was extremely enthusiastic -- reacted to everything -- very interactive -- and that made it a really FUN show. Having grown up in Memphis and/or lived in the South, we and our friends were looking forward to an evening of Southern culture and music. We were unanimously disappointed. We are not your typical picky complainers so this negative review is atypical. Our primary disappointment was this: this was not a Southern experience. None of the actors spoke with any significant accent, and the music sounded like Broadway music, not Southern, black, gospel, blues or soul. The actors were talented enough, not amazing, enough energy - it was not at all what we were expecting it to be.

The show itself was wonderful. I would have given four stars but the sound system was terrible. The music overpowered the vocalists a lot of the time and what you did hear of the vocalists was so muddy that you couldn't understand the lyrics. Great music, dance, fashion designs & stage art. I experienced tender moments of emotions from laughter to crying. I identified with the historical piece about Black music in the South and how some Black groups started and became well-known. The inclusion of both Black and white actors and actresses and their exposure to one another were realistic. The presentation of attitudes, behaviors and actions across the ethnic group line during that time in society's history was real. Memphis: The Musical didn't bite its tongue while revealing truths about racism, discrimination and ignorance in the South. The audience experienced both sides of "race" history - stereotyping, fears, segregation, prejudices, white people's use of Black music to fame, etc. I respect this musical because it was quite entertaining; yet, told a difficult story to hear in more acceptable terms. It told a story about sensitive and edgy truths with ease and grace.

Well...where to begin? The dancing and singing were nothing short of amazing. What sets this play apart however, is its exploration of the racial tensions and inequities of 1950's Memphis. Watching the play my heart ached when color prevented two people from loving each other in the city of their birth. This play could serve as excellent teaching material for any junior high school civics class studying the issue of race in America.

It was our first time to see a production at the Opera House after a 25 year absence from Lexington. The Opera house has weathered those years wonderfully and was every bit as majestic as we remembered it. Our decision to see Memphis was a last minute one so we ended up in the second balcony which still proved to be a great viewing point. The great sound system ensured we didn't miss a word of dialogue. The musical was magnificent and still thought provoking. Being a little older than most of the audience I felt like the play did an excellent job of capturing attitudes and music of the period We will definitely be subscribers next year.

Very enjoyable show. Music not very memorable. All productions at the Tilles Center are wonderful.

The best part was the buzz of the audience as we left. EVERYONE talked about the impressive talent of the actors. Nothing "off" Broadway about it. Great music, great choreography, great energy and just a great treat!

Memphis moves you in more ways than one. The story line is a sometimes forgotten issue from America's dark past. The original music and lyrics have you bopping along in your seat while the story is told. A message for all ages and colors. Simply fantastic!
