I had no idea that the real Ringo Starr would actually come. I loved the tribute to the Vet's in the aidience. The horns section also brought a laugh from me when they did the wave and raised their instruments when others used their cellphones as lights to sway. Incredible show and amazing evening.

The Music of Billy Joel was a great show. The whole family loved it! Michael Cavanaugh kept it fun through out the whole time. Definitely would go again.

I was impressed at how much Michael sounded like Billy Joel, but was disappointed overall in the program. (Compared to the past programs of coverbands playing Abba and Led Zepplin, this was a disappointment.) Just as people were starting to get into the music, it would be interrupted by a "short break" for the band, then GR symphony would play something that sounded totally unrelated and was anticlimactic, and then Michael played songs from different artists. This program's marketing of music of Billy Joel was misleading. The crowd didn't actually get excited, moving, and roused-up until the third song from the last. I left the show feeling cheated, let down, and that I wasted my time and money. After the Abba and Led Zepplin programs, I was on cloud nine for days...not so with this show.

We had a nice time at the lollipop symphony. Great seats and a beautiful venue. The conductor was great with involving young children in the event. From marching, to riding a rollercoaster, listening for cartoon sounds, engaging in a popular story, the children were always engaged! Loved the real lollipops at the end of the event! Thanks GR symphony for a wonderful summer memory!

My grandkids are 3&6 and this was their first experience at the symphony. It was lots of fun and I think they learned a lot. The conductor did a great job with all the kids. My little one was waiting for singing so I was happy that singing was included.

Not only did Buddy Holly look, act and gyrate like Buddy, but he played just like Buddy. Ruddy Valens also was very good. I had a fantastic evening . The Big Bopper was alright and is part of the show. This event set the tone for the next evening which was the Ottawa Hills 50th graduation reunion.

I thought the show was fantastic till the very end............then the bit with Elvis came out and left a bad feeling walking out. We thought that was in bad taste, from the person who did the bit, to the song. Not a great ending to an otherwise great show.

I took my two grandkids ages 5 and 7 to see The Snowman. They were so excited! They loved the pre-concert activities! Trying out the instruments before the show will hopefully encourage them to play the violin or trumpet one day. They enjoyed making the jingle bells during the pre-concert activities and especially getting to play along during the sing-along part of the concert. It was so much fun for them. Well done! A truly memorable experience for all of us!

As a huge fan of Five for Fighting, I was pleasantly surprised to also enjoy the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra play along. The venue of Canonsburg Ski area was wonderful -- especially since the weather was beautiful. The concert was very well-organized and volunteers were SO friendly! The only thing that could have made it better would have been alerted that coolers were allowed. I even called the GR Symphony to ask if lawn chairs could be brought in, but was not given the additional information that everyone seemed to already know. It was not noted anywhere online. This evening was my favorite of the summer!

It was my wife's birthday and we heard about this show from a friend. We have seen Ben twice before, once solo and once with the Ben Fold's Five, both shows were excellent but this one was AMAZING! The venue at DeVos is one of my favorites, not a bad seat in the house and the acoustics are awesome. We have seen the Ben Fold's Live WASO video and this show was everything that was, plus LIVE! The performance and sound was great. Ben was charismatic as ever. To pull off some of the risque lyrics in a conservative town like GR and have everyone leave with a smile on there face is a feat that only Ben could achieve. If you get a chance to see a show like this, or any live show with the GRSO, then do it!

As usual, the Symphony's performance was outstanding! Waterloo's coverage of ABBA's hits was really well done. The weather was perfect and it was a great evening. However, Waterloo's stage presence was sorely lacking. They seemed to be disorganized and unprepared when they came onto the stage. They didn't know the GR Symphony's conductor's name when introducing him and attempts to "capture" the audience seem to fail as did their attempts at humor. The "original" ABBA performer that appeared seemed to be a poor attempt to give credit to their performance as he was such an insignificant part of the original ABBA group. They really tried to build his connection to the original ABBA group but I wasn't impressed. His coming and going from the stage throughout the performance was a distraction and did not seem to be a planned part of the performance.

The Grand Rapids Symphony's performance of Howard's Shore's score for the Lord of The Rings: Return of the King was phenomenal. I hate that they show the movie over the orchestra, yes it is cool but it takes so much away from the orchestra and the true performance. I would much rather see the GRSO perform these pieces without the visuals. That said this still was a fantastic performance the GRSO was right on point this night, as they generally are. The goose bumps I got from the soloist and at 3 other times during the concert are indescribable. Amazing, fantastic, stupendous, are all understatements of this show. Can't wait for "Return of the King" next year!

I didn't expect the fireworks to be all that spectacular, what with the amazing music being the focus of the event. They were truly wonderful, though... Giant glittering booms lighting up the sky as the symphony carried it through flawlessly. The musicians were (as expected) exemplary in their art, and the lineup was sophisticated but fun and kid friendly. We'll definitely be going back next year.

The performance of the symphony on Friday was awesome . Marcelo, the musicians, the choir, the soloist all played their parts perfectly to make this a magical event. And to think Beethoven wrote it all while totally deaf. Very enjoyable as you would expect "ode to Joy" to be.It did not disappoint.

Great first experience with the GR Symphony. The conductor's energy and excitement added an element of interest to the show. His personable addresses to the audience made me feel like this was something everyone was allowed to enjoy, even if I can't tell a viola from a violin. The Youth Ensemble was jaw-droppingly talented and professional - a real surprise and maybe my favorite part of the show! My only complaint is the missing seminal John Williams piece - doing a "Star Wars"-themed concert WITHOUT the Imperial March is like hosting a Seinfeld tribute with no mention of Kramer.

The Grand Rapids Symphony was Fantastic! We attended the evening of May 12, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have recommended that all of our friends go. After the symphony on our way out we lingered for a bit on the stairs to take photos with our friends and family in order to remember what a wonderful time we all had, unfortunately one of the volunteers was quite rude. We did not block anyone from exiting so I was somewhat taken back by the way we were treated, and it did put a dampener on the experience but even a rude volunteer can not dissuade us from coming again to hear the symphony!

Great "dress rehearsal" for Carnegie Hall! Bolero was so listenable and beautiful. It's one of those pieces that deserves to be as popular as it is and the GR symphony did it proud. The middle 2 pieces were a study in different orchestration styles, distinct and moving. The soloist was so "in his skin": seasoned, confident, relaxed. He was a joy to watch as well as listen to. His encore was dear also. We found the Chorus, though technically well done, to be a big downer as a concert closer. A thought was shared: "Why get all those people up there and then make us feel so depressed? What's the point?" The encore was an up-lifting favorite, to be sure. AND, I am glad I experienced the evening. It was special. My best to my hometown symphony. I'm so proud of you.

We were familiar with these composers but not the specific pieces on the program. The entire evening was a bit too dissonant for us to thoroughly enjoy. It was too much of the same era. Had we known, we would have chosen a different concert. As usual, the members of the symphony did an outstanding job and demonstrated their ability to handle some very difficult music. Dylana was sensational and it was great to see David conduct again.

So glad we overcame our aversion to the high ticket price to come and experience this amazing performance of Prisoner of Azkaban. John Williams' complicated score was beautifully played; conductor and musicians made it look effortless. It was fascinating to see some of the tools the director uses to keep track of timing. I've never been to a concert where I was encouraged to cheer for my team, that was different and refreshing! The only criticism in this review goes to patrons, who made the beautiful venue look like a trashed movie theater when they were done. Yes, there was a movie, but that doesn't give you tacit approval to be a slob. Please pick up after yourselves. Sheesh.

The Christmas Pops concert was very disappointing-we won't be going back. The music was not "pop"ular-it was as the conductor stated "all about him". It was obscure and overly heavy on religious music, instead of a fun and light-hearted event. If you were trying to take folks (ie children) who may not be fans of the symphony yet, counting on them having fun and listening to familiar and popular Christmas songs, you would be as disappointed as we were. GRS-Go back to Varineau-he knows fun and pops!

The evening was entertaining, impressive, emotional, and fun. The conductor is funny. Much more fun than an evening at the symphony sounds like!

As always, the music was top notch, and a great way to start the holiday season. So why a fair rating? Sitting there waiting for the concert to start I had beer spilled on me and wine spilled on me by those trying to take their seats in tight quarters. This is what I would expect at a Griffins hockey game, not a concert. If they want to enjoy, keep it in the lobby. Again, the orchestra, chorus, youth chorus, and guest artist (who is always amazing) met and exceeded my expectations for excellence.

The whole performance was so professional. A fun time also with the humor inserted from the conductor. Really enjoyed Leon Williams, the Youth Choral, and Embellish as part of the concert. GR has a superb symphony.

Once again the Holiday Pops concert got us in the Christmas Spirit. The voices in the choirs and the guest, Leon, as well as the bells added to the delightful instrumental music. Loved listening to the Messiah at the end.

Every December, the GR Symphony Holiday Pops kicks me into the Christmas spirit. The symphony sounded amazing as always this year, and Leon Williams was delightful as the guest singer. I go to as many symphony performances as I can, and will continue to do so, but the Holiday Pops is a must-see!

For two hours, the 50s and that Paris were back thanks to the big screen and a superb live orchestra under Mr Varineau. Their synchronization with the scenes was more amazing than the dancing or fashions.

I !always enjoyed An American in Paris, but when teamed up with a LIVE Symphony it's the cat's MEOW. Simply a wonderful experience for everyone attending. This is the second I have been to (Singing In The Rain) and will look for others as they come in the future. One of the difficulties I have is being a musician myself, I tend to watch the instrumentalists at times and will miss parts of the movie! Again,....this is a winning combination. These movies will never be made like this ever again. They are Classics. My brother in NOLA who reviewed theater and TV for N.O. Times Picayune says he has not seen this in New Orleans and would love to experience one of these. Kudos to Mr. Varineau and all of the Grand Rapids Symphony and the people responsible for these productions. Loved it!

Although at times it was hard to understand the words to the movie in the mezz., the Grand Rapids Symphony did a fabulous job with the accompanying music!

The music selection was wonderful, and I can't imagine the work they had to put into syncing their music with The Snowman movie at the end! They did a spectacular job with it. My favorite part was the youth choir's rendition of the main song in The Snowman, together with the orchestra playing it was something I am glad I got to see and hear. I do wish there had been a bit less narration during the movie so we could have enjoyed the music more, but it was still very enjoyable.

What a great show! An American in Paris is a wonderful, classic film, one of my very favorites! The film combined with a beautiful score by Gershwin, played by the GR symphony was a phenomenal experience. The sound was great. The different layers of dialog, music, sound that were pulled from the original sound track and then combined with the live symphony were perfect. John Varineau is always a delight. I would wholeheartedly recommend the film/live symphony experience to everyone. My only complaint would be the film screen could be a tiny bit larger, and maybe that's a logistical/structural issue that can't be helped. All in all a fantastic evening!

Service in the lobby was great, they had people opening the doors for you and everything. There were costumes and geeky tees everywhere, and the walls were adorned with the Hogwarts and house banners. The only downside to the venue is it's size. While this does not matter as much for a concert, the seats in the back of the upper floors are far enough away form the stage that you cannot decern any faces. The show itself? Pure perfection. The GR Symphony is one of the best orchestras in Michigan, and the conductor (Nicolas Buc) was hilarious. All in all, a Harry Potter fan's dream, can't wait for Prisoner of Azkaban!

What a delightful evening! The orchestra sounded phenomenal, and the guest conductor kept everything flowing seamlessly! Loads of energy and enthusiasm from the podium, orchestra, and audience. I kept thinking, "They're going to be sore tomorrow!" It was fun to hear the gorgeous Williams score live, and the Butterbeer, popcorn, costumes, people cheering and jeering just added to the fun. I went as more of a John Williams and Grand Rapids Symphony fan than an H.P. fan, but the whole package was a real treat. Great job, GRSymphony! I absolutely CAN'T WAIT until Azkaban!
