Walnut Street Theatre's a Christmas Carol

Walnut Street Theatre's a Christmas Carol

The Walnut Street Theatre production Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Philadelphia tradition!  The holiday magic begins when a troupe of actors appear at the historic Walnut Street Theatre to set up and perform the heartwarming tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. We all know this grumpy old miser's response to holiday cheer is "Bah, Humbug." Scrooge is a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. But on one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

I've been attending this play and others at WST for years! Unfortunately, this is the first year where I CANNOT rave about the performance!! Many of the actors seemed uncomfortable on stage and 3 of the actors where OFF PITCH!!! That is something I expect from a school play NOT a PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE that I paid hard earned money to see. I expected to enjoy this play with my son and my husband (who attended for the 1st time); now I am left with a feeling of outrage that I spent our money on the performance. WHAT IS GOING ON THERE AT WST?? Have you run out of performers who can act and sing professionally??

I frequent the theater and while I did not expect too too much as the tickets were only $15; I did expect a better sound system. The kids in the audience were so noisy that a better sound system would of at least made a better experience. I felt that Scrooge was well played. It was a production that was equivalent to a high school production.

The cast did a terrific job of telling the whole tale with minimal props and sets. Many cast members played multiple roles, but did it very well. The story moved along well, without feeling rushed - show lasted 1 hour. We enjoyed it and would come again!

I took my 4 year old grandson. It was a BIG mistake. I had thought the one hour version of the Christmas Carol was geared toward children. When the actors came out on the stage, the first thing that happened was they put Jacob Marley in his coffine which I think my grandson missed. Then the singing started. The volume was startingly loud. I was shocked. It frightened my grandson so much, he started shrieking in fear and we had to leave the theatre less than 5 minutes after the performance began. I have taken other grandchildren to the Little Orchestra and to the one hour Nutcracker in NYC. An adult comes out on stage to explain what will happen in terms of noise and darkness. I would think that exercise would benefit your version. This production is not suitable for children under 10 years old and should be labeled as such.' VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!

The play performance was decent and, overall, done well. At times, the lines were hard to understand; it seems the lines were spoken too quickly. The essence of the time-long and honored story by Dickens was alive and well. However, the entire play itself rang true to that of an amateur production to be likened to that of a school production. It was not what we were expecting from a Walnut Street Theater performance. However, it was evident that the actors were doing their best with minimal props and time. This was most definitely a play for families with children (especially a first play). My only gripe then would be, change the word choice as many small children do not know the words used at times. Perhaps make the language more child-friendly. This seems to add to the one area of confusion in this play; target audience. Make it more clear who the target audience is comprised and then alter where necessary.

A little rushed, a few cues were off, and too many loose musical numbers. Wasn't at all what I was expecting for a Charles Dickens play. lights were great. creative use of the set, but overall the story was hurried and if I hadn't already the story I would have been very confused.

For a few years we had a subscription to the Walnut, but gave them up this year as we anticipated our new theatre to be completed in town. Unfortunately, it is not. Anyhow, we did travel up this week to see the annual performance of The Christmas Carol. As always, we enjoyed ourselves. All seats in the theatre have good views. The performance, designed for children, was well executed. The staff was helpful and friendly. We will be back again when a show strikes our fancy. The one drawback is parking. The theatre has none. The lot right next door is replete with stories I could tell. Each time we park there there is an episode. This past time was the $18 for the 75 minutes we were parked there. Sheesh! Arrive early and park two blocks away.

I took a group of students to see this production. We are studying the story in class, and I thought it would be a nice field trip, especially during this time of year. I got a good response from my kids (7th/8th grades), but I wasn't as pleased as I expected to be. In the opening number, especially, the singers were out of tune, and I had trouble understanding quite a few of the lines throughout. It wasn't that they were delivered too quickly, but the overall sound balance wasn't as good as I expected. To be honest, it seemed more like a community theater production than a professional one. As a musician, I was mostly disappointed with the pitch issues. However, there were some good things that happened throughout, so I won't let it deter me from coming again.

WHEN WE ARRIVED FOR THE PLAY WE WERE SURPRISED TO SEE MANY BUSES LINED DOWN WALNUT ST. I MUST ADMIT WHEN I SAW THE TIME FOR THE SHOW (10:30)I THOUGHT ABOUT KIDS BUT NOT SCHOOL TRIPS. WE BROUGHT MY SISTER-IN-LAW FOR HER BIRTHDAY AND THEN TO LUNCH AND I ASSUMED MAYBE THIS WAS FOR FAMILIES TO BRING THEIR KIDS. KNOW RIGHT FROM THE START THAT I HAVE A LOT OF COMPASSION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN SO THIS IS NOT ABOUT THINGS THEY CANNOT CONTROL ITS ABOUT THE DISTRACTIONS WHILE TRY TO WATCH THE PLAY. WE HAD CHILDREN SCREAMING, MOANLY, CRYING AND JUST FUSSING ABOUT. THIS WAS VERY DISTRACTING. I BELIEVE THE THEATER SHOULD MAKE KNOWN THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE THAT MORNING TIMESE COULD RESULT IN THESE SITUATIONS.

The theater and the story are wonderful, but this performance did not thrill. Good for children and families if they already know the story. I think if you were seeing this story for the first time ever you would not know what was going on. The acting seemed hurried and the lines spoken were at times hard to understand. There is very little set changing going on, with the same prop used over and over. There were microphone issues (not being on at first or loud enough at the start of someone speaking). The music to the songs are taped, no orchestra. For the price of the tickets, and if you don't expect more than a theme park type performance, then it would be worth your time. If you are expecting the type of performance like les mis, then you will be sorely disappointed.

The show was very good for the short amount of time they had to perform the entire version of the Christmas carol. We did not take any children but the only thing I saw as a downfall was that the ghost of Marley was a little scary but none of the children around seemed to be scared or crying. Also, some of the words I thought would be hard for children to understand but I know it was part of the times back then. We really enjoyed the show!

I felt as though the cast rushed through the production (probably because Annie was right after). It was hard for my 8 year old niece to hear and follow along. I have taken the kids to see "A Christmas Carol" at different venues and this was our least favorite.

I brought my 5 year old niece to the theater for the first time. She said, "It was kinda scary, but I liked it." Jacob Marley was amazing. You could feel his howls of anguish and torment. I love Victorian literature, and every meaningful detail from the novel was included in this play. Furthermore, the diversity of the cast enchanted my niece. She saw children her own age on stage. The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present were played by people of color, and for my biracial niece, I think seeing herself represented on stage was engaging. When the ghost of Christmas Past appeared, my niece cried out, "She's so pretty!" and she talked about her on our way back home. All in all, I found my own natural tendency towards humbugging had dissipated, and I, too, pledged to keep Christmas in my heart all through the year.

This is the second year in a row that our family found the dialogue indecipherable. The sound was loud enough, but it was not clear. My daughter, not being familiar with the story had no idea what was going on. It was touted as a child-friendly play but I didn't think so at all. We will skip it next year. Interesting that we are asked to share pictures for this review, when the venue had a "no photos" policy.

This is advertised as a kids show so there were a lot of kids in the audience but my adult daughter and I were looking for some entertainment in Philly and happened upon this show. Surprisingly the show held the attention of the children and they were very quiet the whole time. We both really enjoyed it, too. Appeals to both young and old. While the cast, choreography, music and set were wonderful, the show was too scary for the many little children in the audience. As soon as Marley appeared in flashes of light, loud clanging, mummy costume and chains, kids throughout the theatre started to cry and climb onto their mothers' laps. They were terrified he would return for the rest of the show. The producers should have kept their young audience in mind and toned down the Marley character. I also found the actors hard to understand from the balcony. Only take your older kids to this show and prepare them ahead of time!

This was a great production! Outstanding cast, gorgeous sets. True to story adaptation. My Only word of caution would be to avoid taking small children, as in under 5, or even older children if they are easily scared. There are loud scary thunder and lightning effects that herald the arrival of the ghosts, there is a ghoulish Jacob Marley in chains, and a grim reaper. Young children may definitely find it scary, and a few started crying during our show. But for older kids and adults, it's a don't miss!

Good rendition in a 1 act stage show. We brought our kids ages 6,4,2 and they were into it the entire show even the "scary" parts. I liked that the verses stayed fairly true to the book...that has gotten lost in many of the modern versions of the story. Well done show.

if this show is going to be advertised for young children, then maybe consider toning down the old English language, some of which I had a hard time following. if young children are to understand what is happening, especially at the fast pace that this show is moving then they should be able to comprehend the verbiage. I brought 6 children with me, ages 4 to 9 and other than the sound and visual effects, which helped to keep their attention, they got glazed eyes from the interaction of character's, because they could not understand. trying to explain to them, was tough due to fast pace. great cast of performers.

A very entertaining Christmas show for the whole family! Actor who played scrooge stole the show! I would refer anyone to add this show to their holiday traditions..My one suggestion would be when the actors are asking for a donation for the theaters youth programs as patrons are leaving the show, the members also give out a candy cane to each person as a festive reminder of the event especially for the kids!!

great show. Even though it is a children's show, it is more for older children due to old London diction and themes. They stick to the original story so it's great for all of us who know the story so well, but may be lost on newer/younger audiences.

My expectations were low, yet it still fell short given the amount of money I spent. My biggest issue was the view. I had third row mezz, but 2 tall adults in front of me that made me move from side to side to see the performance. I was very uncomfortable because I could not sit back and relax for the whole hour. Secondly, there should not be a charge for children under 5 - or at least a VERY discounted rate. Parking rates were ridiculous. Snack prices were ridiculous. The show itself, "A Christmas Carol" was a little rushed. Too much singing and a little more acting for this particular play. I am glad I went, because now I know never again!

We took our 9-year old grand-daughter to see it and it was ideal for her. It was an extremely well production. Lines from the book were preserved and the story line was not changed in any way. Even the scary stuff was done carefully - just the right level for the kids. The 1-hour length was perfect. Most kids (including our grand-daughter) would become "antsy" with anything longer.

The best part of the Walnut Street Theater's Christmas Carol was the performances of the actors. Each and every one of them, and some were very young, played their part(s) with enthusiasm and a feel for the story being told and time period in which it takes place. The appearance of the ghosts, particularly Jacob Marley, sent a chill through the audience that you could actually feel thanks to effective costumes, lighting and sound. This was proven by many of the younger members of the audience with hands over their faces and clinging to the nearest adult. The only problem was the use of the actual dialog as written by Mr. Dickens. I realize that the dialog is a big part of the work, but it was, for the most part, beyond the understanding of the younger members of the audience who had trouble following the story because of this. The older members of the audience had no trouble understanding what poor houses were or that a situation is a job, but it left the youngsters lost in a sea of words they couldn't understand. I, and my grandchildren, still loved the show and gave us all a lot to think about. And, after all, isn't that what Mr. Dickens had in mind?

As would be expected, the audience for the morning show was filled with youngsters on school outings, so the expectation for the performance was that it would be geared to that age level. However, this was not the case; rather, it very much is a performance that uses the author's words and is staged to appeal as much (if not more) to adult viewers prone to more critical views of stage musicals. While the score is nothing memorable, the enthusiasm of the performers, the choreography and the very clever use of stage props make this very much a joyous production for children of all ages (except, perhaps, for toddlers who, like the one sitting next to us, may be frightened by the ghosts into vocal fear and tears). This is a production that far outperforms the cost of admission!

We thoroughly enjoyed the play (Me, my Husband, Daughters aged 20 & 17) along with their Grandmother. Coming into Philadelphia for the 11 am show and then going to lunch afterward and enjoying the sites of Christmas made for a memorable day. My children were not excited until we got into the theatre and were surrounded with families and people of all ages dressed up for the event. The play was excellent, and the man who played Ebenezer Scrooge outstanding. We intend to make this a family tradition, my kids enjoyed it that much. This show is perfect for young families and people who aren't really into the performing arts (approximately 1 hour in length). All of the players knew their parts and played them well. ***suggestion-the volunteer in our section had a large ring of keys that were a bit disruptive at times, throughout the performance. (probably not needed & could have been set aside).

The play itself was done well. I would have loved to have a live orchestra playing for this musical though.

What a wonderful experience. We brought our kids for Christmas Carol and we all loved it. The actors were incredible and you can tell they really enjoy what they are doing...

Not sure ghost scenes appropriate for pre schoolers, but effects eye catching. Music right on and the story line pretty well follows the old black and white Alistair Sims movie. And only being one act, keeps the attention of little ones without inducing boredom and restlessness. Glad to have gone.

Lack-luster performance this year. Bring back Mr. Lovell, please!

A fun and entertaining performance geared toward the children. Scrooge was terrific. Full of song and dance. Enjoyed it very much.

We took our 6-year old grandson to see his first professional production, A Christmas Carol. We were a little worried that his attention might wander, but our concerns proved unfounded; through most of the play he leaned forward in his seat and followed the action closely. And we enjoyed the show as well. It was well done and we would recommend it.

The play was enjoyable. The late comers were disruptive, unlike plays with breaks, they were allowed to be seated, which was understandable. When the ghost of Marley shows up the noise from the chains and the drum drown out the actors voices. I thought at some point the chains and the gong would quiet down until necessary, but having it through the whole speech, we couldnt hear a word. All in all, the kids loved it. Keep up the great work. Thanks.

I think that the show was fantastic but I had to explain what was happening the whole way thru. I appreciate the use of the charles dickens language but it was very hard to follow at times for my kids. Also the ghost of marley seemed to be presented a little scarier than necessary. My daughter was shaking and clinging to me.

We saw the show with our two children, ages 7 and 8. They absolutely loved it. The length of the show was just perfect. They were amazed with the production and we all enjoyed the story line. The actors and actresses were superb! Unfortunately, patrons talking, receiving loud cell phone calls, and dropping glass containers really distracted us from the show and prevented us from really getting "in the moment". It's unfortunate that other adults couldn't monitor themselves appropriately.

The Walunt's Christmas Carol was a very nice family event. However, the crying babies were too much. A note for the ignorant; if your baby is crying leave the theatre or better yet, leave them with a sitter. That way you, your older child and everyone around you can enjoy the show!

I enjoyed the show. I brought 7 kids with me, ages 4-11. They did not follow or understand the show. They started to get rammy half way through. It is advertised as a children's show and I felt it should have been geared for younger children to understand.

A great show! The kids were captivated, the adults were smiling. The cast did a great job from their singing to facial expressions. The voices were amazing, Scrooge was authentic. A 1 hour play was perfect for small children and there was enough going on onstage to hold your interest. Loved the ghosts, each brought a unique flavor to their character. Thanks for a great show!!

The set was beautiful. The choreography was excellent. The cast was well chosen. Overall it was a great production. Two minor comments: 1. The songs seemed out of place. It really wasn't a musical and the songs seemed to sometimes come in at strange places. 2. The Friday afternoon showing was mostly for schools. Although they were mostly well-behaved, we probably would have gone to a different showing had we known.
