MGMT

Brooklyn experimental rockers MGMT released their self-titled third album in 2013 while continuing to play headlining concert dates and festivals all over the world. Fans scooped up tickets to hear songs like "Kids," "Electric Feel," and "Congratulations." The band's singular style of psychedelic noise-pop, which integrates plenty of electronica elements, was forged beginning in 2002 by founders Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden when they were freshmen at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, was released in 2006, and MGMT started gaining fans with the help of their opening sets for trend-setting acts like Of Montreal, Radiohead, and Beck.

This band is truely one of my favorites to hear and watch live. They re style of music for every album is different and that is what makes them so interesting to me. Their performance at the Hollywood palladium was absolutely amazing. The visual effects on the backdrop was crazing artistic and love it.

I have seen over 50 shows at the Fillmore. The sound at this one was among the worst. Sound guy needs to tighten up their shows. Sounded amateur. I have heard opening bands with a tighter live sound. For a band that relies on production on their albums for their signature sound, you would expect the same from a live show. Vocals and instruments blended together in a static splatter of sound across the audience. Bummer because I love their sound on their albums. Light show was fun, leave before encore, play all the good stuff early. Also they go on early so arrive no later than 8:30.

I enjoyed MGMT, but Did not enjoy the opening act, not sure what that was! It took away from the MGMT experience. The sound at the Ryman is usually very good, but I did have some difficulty distinguishing some of MGMT's great sounds and vocals. Not sure what the problem was, but the sound could have been set-up much better.

I saw MGMT a few months ago opening for Beck at united palace theatre in Harlem. That was a decent show with good sound. They played almost every song off their album except for "Kids." I was a little annoyed after that because it seems like if you're a new band, with one album out, you should play your biggest song on that album. Anyway, I thought I would give them another chance so I saw them last night at Prospect Park Bandshell where they were headlining. Well, that wasn't really worth the $40. They did play "Kids" this time. They also played several songs that weren't on Oracular Spectacular, but none of those were very good. They didn't have much stage presence and didn't seem that into it. They were much more entertaining when they opened for Beck, at a seated venue. Overall, I would have thought it was a decent show for $20 or so. It definitely wasn't worth the $40 and I doubt I'll ever go see MGMT again in concert...

This was my first time seeing MGMT ... after some contact with the band members, Andrew especially and listening to the tunes... I was blown away at the creative sounds and the direction of the band After joining several fan sites, checking out interviews on Youtube and performances I took a chance to do something priceless, fly from Santa Barbara to New York for the show and a chance to visit the sites At the show I got a chance to meet and talk with Andrew, ben and Will... all VERY cool and down to earth guys As for the show, if you have not ever seen MGMT... I highly recommend to see them perform live... Being somewhat a skeptical person, this was by far one of the MOST amazing times and shows I have ever seen! Check them out! ... and if you can't wait fly to see them like I did

I have always loved listening to MGMT but had never experienced them live. My expectations were low as I've been disappointed by a number of concerts in the past. This was certainly not the case with MGMT. I have never said this about any band but they are actually better live than they are on my iPod.

a beautiful setting - MGMT in their "hometown" Brooklyn, playing to their "hipster" crowd of locals, presented a very competent set of their "hits" and a few new songs. The 3 biggest favorites ("Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel", and "Kids") were well played, and VERY well received by the crowd. unfortunately, their new material, and related "psychedelic" sound does not play well live, and left much to be desired. NOT sure if these guys are "3-hit wonders" or not - BUT they could really work to improve their Live perfromances (especially playing larger/festival-type venues), and their apparent love of "psychedelic sound" is unfortunate, since their "inspired" 80's-style pop sound was so brilliant!

i had heard from a few friends that MGMT, in the past, were fairly bad live but i was hoping after a year or so of touring with a great album this would no longer be the case...ohh...no luck there. they were awful. the sound quality was awful...the warm up band was lounder and much clearer, the were so boring to watch that it didn't make a difference that i could see the stage perfectly...no engery, no passion, worst song order ever (who ends the night with an almost ballad that no one has ever heard before!) PLEASE PLEASE someone help produce their concerts! the music is fantastic but they are not living up to their name and are in dire need of new management...

MGMT's music is great, however their stage presence is forgettable. Their interaction with the crowd is non existant, the overall loudness of their music was so low I didn't even need to yell to speak to my friends and I was about 80 yards from the stage. While their play list was good, I wish I could have gotten more into it.

Great show, loved the new songs and the stage lights were great. Also loved the addition of the funk guitar - it really brought out the psychedelic aspect of the band and was great for the park atmosphere. That being said, they could have given the keyboard more volume - especially on songs like Time to Pretend, but it could have just been that the sound was lost in the park.

The band put on a great performance, and had very cool and trippy background lights and screens. The songs from their first CD were performed exceptionally well, and were improvised frequently to include intervals of instrumental jams and lead-ins to other songs. The focus was primarily on musicianship, and I enjoyed every minute. The band's new music, I suppose which will be released in the coming months on a new CD, was very country-western based. It had twangs of Hawaii Five-O along with James Bond theme song-based undertones, and the occasional slower blues. I enjoyed the new stuff, but It's going to take some getting used to.

several songs were a blast, but overall the performance was lack-luster. the band seemed a bit inexperienced to handle such a large outdoor space. slow songs got lost. the set could have used more of the 'kids' and 'time to pretend'-like energy. i'd consider seeing MGMT again, but at a smaller indoor venue like bowery or music hall of wmsbrg

I saw MGMT as opening band for Beck in October at United Palace of last year. The show lasted 35 minutes and the sound was terrible. Andrew V did not talk at all to the local crowd which was expecting them to be as entertaining as Beck, or even better. Very disappointing at that time. Now in Prospect Park, in Brooklyn - their neighborhood - we could at least expect a greater performance. I went there to see them again without high expectation since open air concerts are rarely very good for the acoustics. What a disappointment, the singer still has a very weak and gauzy voice - arrangements in studio for the album are amazing... They played a couple of rocky new tunes which were ok, but the whole band lacked energy and pep. Basically, some bands are better live than on their cds - MGMT are definitely the opposite.

MGMT music is super awesome. However during the concert they are very static, they kick started the show with one of their new songs and the audience simply stood there in a puzzle. Overall, it felt like people paid money to see them on one of their rehearsals, but nevertheless, we still had fun.

Surprise, surprise - for a 2 person act, with 3 additional session guys live.. they did a great job. Unlike alot of the DJ inspired music being sold as original today, these guys are "real deal" musicians. They bring back a lot of 60's and 70's influences to create a new fresh sound. See them if you can - D.

So I saw MGMT at Red Rocks with Janelle Monae (who was awesome by the way and I'd go see her by herself) and it seriously rained the entire night. Not like little light sprinkles either like it was a downpour with sheets of rain but we stayed! It was an unforgettable time and I just danced in the rain for like 3 hours everyone there was soaked but MGMT didn't give up and cancel they played and I danced and it was awesome Go see them and the next time they come back to Denver I will be there. Hopefully without the massive rainstorm!

MGMT did an amazing job, despite the fact that it was POURING cats and dogs!!The sound was great and they had an excellent line up of tunes. Good stage presence. Janelle Monae was a great booster to this concert, she got people on their feet, pumping us up for the main show:MGMT. The only complaints were the cold, cold rain that went through to our undergarments, but who could control that. Although, the waving swirls of water encircling the band did look cool and added to the experience. Tame Impala was a bit disappointing, but they're music is still good, they just lacked energy. Overall this show was amazing.

Ok, when we got there, I did not understand why there wasn't a big line to wait to get in to see them and why people didn't come in early to be near the stage and why people weren't all funky n decked out like at the GaGa concerts. Either way, me and my friend stood out w/our make-up, we were 3 people away from the stage and we had a perfect view of Ben and Andrew :-) The opening act was okay, guitar rifts were cool, but they needed more lyrics in their music (I don't even remember the opening act's name). But yeah, when it was near the time for MGMT to hit the stage, the floor got PACKED and HOT! The energy went from a 3 to a 10++++. They ripped it! They were amazing, and Andrew's so intense, I love it. Ben's so cute peeping at the crowd teehee. Cool thing we got free posters from the Fillmore (like always w/sold out shows), and me and my friend thought "Omg we should stake out and see if we get to meet them!" Again, don't understand why there weren't more people waiting, there were only like 10-11 folks waiting. We waiting 2 hrs. and there was only 6 of us girls left waiting to meet them, and I was 2 minutes away from leaving myself. I see Andrew coming down the stairs and they greeted us so kindly! They took pix, did autographs and talked with us...they stuck around a good 15-20 minutes. Such cool, down-to-earth guys, it was like meeting a friend's friends. Close to the stage, free concert posters, and we got to meet the band! Definitely waaay worth the $30 ticket. I'm officially an MGMT groupie (in a non-slutty way) LoL. I love these guys, so not phased by the fame.

this concert was incredible, even considering the less-than-adequate opening band, whose set was entirely too long. great weather, good people, great sponsors too! the bandshell was a nice location, we were right next to the stage and it wasn't so crowded to be claustrophobic for a sold out show. This was my 3rd time seeing them. I hold to the opinion that MGMT put on a much better show than most people realize. They re such a fan s band - so many quirks and creative nods to the history of psychedelia - I d say MGMT and Tame Impala are becoming the bands that im most jealous of not having manifested myself, but that s one of the humane qualities of this band - they are very thoughtful and empathetic in their lyrics and approach to being a modern band. The series of lyrics to songs like When You Die or Your Life is A Lie are rarely mentioned but display the band at their most pop-syd-Barrett moments - which are not to be missed! Also they play Siberian Breaks almost without fail and it s a 13 minute exploration through the desert of yo mind and I love this band for taking it Bottom line - go to this show, don t tell anyone, enjoy yourself, then tell everyone in some weird review that you did so, worked for me!

While MGMT is always a fantastic show visually and musically, this show was a disappointment. I saw this group 5 years ago at the same venue, the Fillmore, it was a great time, though this go around I truly feel like it was a waste of money. The opener was mediocre, really in need of a DJ, and MGMT themselves were in and out in such a quick fashion the price tag of the show, with parking in downtown Denver, left me really disappointed. It was a quick blast of hits, maybe 10-12 songs total it felt like. I'm not sure if they cut it early for the kiddies thanks to Denver's curfew, but seeing as I'm an adult who's parents didn't pay for my ticket, I feel pretty robbed. When I leave a show sweat free, when I didn't need to procure water or use the restroom or rest from too much dancing, that show was too damn short, and with its high price tag, I'm going to be very hesitant seeing MGMT in the future. A short show is fine, when it isn't costing more than 30, MGMT sure has an inflated opinion of themselves believing 60 dollars minimum is a fair price for 10 songs.

MGMT is a band I like but maybe they are past their prime? no information on who the opener was- turns out it was one guy singing and messing with a computer- it was a bit slow but ok I guess. MGMT came on at about 9:15, played some good songs but the crowd never got crazy or anything, they played their encore and show was over and we were walking out the door at 10 o'clcock. for my $50 bucks that was a pretty weak effort. at least have a more entertaining opening act if your set is that short.

I thought MGMT put on a good performance. The stage props and lights were great! They played a lot of songs off the new album and they were all the ones off that album that I would've wanted to hear. But they missed a few key bangers like Congratulations, Metanoia, The Youth, and a few others off of Oracular Spectacular. It was a pretty short set too which contributed to that.

The venue is as beautiful as they come. It's like a more historical and beautiful Radio City Music Hall. While it is a bit off the beaten path, it is well worth the trip. The bathrooms were easily accessible and no wait. The bars were plentiful, no more than a 5-7 minute wait. The GA pit is the way to go if you want room and don't want to sit. MGMT was amazing. The acoustics at the Orpheum Theater are clean and crisp and seems that no matter where you sit you'll still have clear view of the stage. I had second to last row seats on the balcony and I was able to enjoy the visuals and light show. Mgmt are fun and energetic. They're remix of "kids" sounded way better than the originals. They did most of my favorite songs and then some. The performance was amazing and I wasn't able to stop dancing and feeling the music (especially during "Siberian Breaks"). Now, the crowd. I guess mostly everyone who attended didn't seem to enjoy it. It certainly looked like the only ones grooving were the people I attended the show with, the girl standing next to me and I. I was actually asked by the gentlemen behind me to sit down because everyone else was doing so. I kindly refused and he left early. Lots of attendees left rather early. Oh well

MGMT was great live. The entire band is extremely talented and their live show sounded very similar to their studio recordings. I was general admission at Barclay's Center, so the sound quality was booming and I could feel the music reverberating throughout my body. The show was very psychedelic, and had very good vibes. The only thing I can complain about was the lack of enthusiasm from the audience, and a majority of them were young teenage girl who were only there for Kids and Time to Pretend. Such a shame because the band was great and no one was dancing or singing except for my friends and I.

I literally watch the videos on my phone from the concert and cry. Andrews voice is heavenly live. It's so sweet and innocent. It isn't better live but it isn't worse. It's like two different experiences, non comparable.. I loved Andrews personality on stage, he wouldn't dance but just pace back and forth and in the really good deep songs, he would stand in the middle of the stage, head down, holding the mic in both hands aahh he's so gorgeous. Some songs I didn't know but I danced anyway. The atmosphere was awesome and I loved the screen and the lights. I'm usually not one of those obnoxious people who write reviews but I loved it haha at other concerts I've been to the performers talk with the audience but mgmt didn't at all I kinda wish they did, but it was different I guess

I really enjoyed this concert. The visuals were genius and the quality of the music was awesome. I just wish there was room to move around. My friends and I had to act like we were looking for someone in order to get to the front (sorry to the people we pissed off) . Overall great concert.

Amazing show!!! Truly a one of a kind experience to have. Their sound and visuals were absolutely astonishing and unique! I highly recommend this tour and MGMT in general. It will certainly not be a disappointment! All of the effects throughout the concert, made the concert completely feel like a unique experience, by getting caught up in the videos and music simultaneously. This was definitely one of my favorite shows of all time and I typically go to several concerts and other various shows, within a year.

Great show in general. The visuals were some of the best I've seen and they sounded great. Well worth the $50 I spent on the tickets.

So happy I finally saw MGMT! They are treading in the pools of Pink Floyd and RS Satanic Majesties. A young band with a slow and steady pace. They had a good time. The crowd was happy when they cam back for an encore. Kuroma opened then came back to play with MGMT. What a drummer!!!!

This show was absolutely mashpotatoes and groovy!!! Crowd was solid, though people seldom let loose like they should. MGMT is getting more psychedelic and less poppy, so not everyone is going to dig their new sounds, but I promise if you let it sink in, you will be amazed by their wisdom.

Saw MGMT at the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans in 2010. They were riding high and the 'buzz' was huge. I was impressed, but not overly... However, these artists have since grown into themselves and their 'fame' and their performance shows. Much more confident, comfortable and poised this time around - a live performance isn't just about the music... The Boulevard Pool at the Cosmopolitan is a remarkable venue - I will go see a show there just because it's there...and MGMT rose to the occasion. Great songs, lyrics, and fantastic animation and videos to back them up...with lounge chairs and nooks and crannies and several 'bars' scattered about. Incredible sound quality, smallish crowds, but always a party at the Boulevard Pool... Well done.

Seriously, these guys are beyond amazing live. You would think they wouldn't sound as good live as they do on their cd just because that is a common thing with a lot of bands, but it is the total opposite! If you're an MGMT fan I HIGHLY recommend you see them live the next time they have more shows. (I know I am) Took a 3 hour road trip and went super early with my friend to the outside venue we were at and we got the best spot in the entire venue; front and center. The psychedelic lighting in the background, the sound, the lights, the friendly people around me, and just everything made it an unforgettable experience. It doesn't hurt that Andrew is a total babe as well. He came out after the show, me and my friend got a picture with him, and he was super cool and a little timid but so gorgeous and I guess a little overwhelming haha. I'LL NEVER FORGET THIS NIGHT. It was so amazing.

I was hesitant to see MGMT live because I thought that their live sound would not live up to what I hoped it would be but they were amazing. There were projectors set up on the sides of the stage that showed trippy images the entire show. It was quite an experience. They sounded amazing and their stage presence was greater than expected. One of my favorite bands and favorite shows.

The concert was amazing! This was the first time I had seen MGMT and they sound just as good live as they do on recorded tracks. The lighting and special effects were also great and added to the ambience of the show. I would defiently see them again. Come back to NC soon! Thanks for taking the time for the pic Andrew!

I wasn't sure what to expect from MGMT. This was my first MGMT concert, went alone because no one I know likes them(their loss). They had great presence, and good rapport with the audience. Andrew the lead singer even came down from the stage twice to mingle with the front row once with Ben and James. I loved the images that were on the backdrop. They sounded perfect. I thought both the singing and music was on point. They were very humble. The lead singer said "thank you" after most of the songs, I felt like telling THEM thank you! I have no complaints only praise! Great, great, great show! I wish I could trap that night in a box and relive it whenever I want! On a concert, but not band related note: To the 2 types of people you will inevitability find at a show 1) The couple that fondles each other 2) The off beat dancer SIT DOWN!

I have been to lots of concerts in my lifetime, but this one took the cake. It was a sold out concert so the place was packed. The cover band sucked, but luckily they only played for 45 minutes. MGMT came on the stage at 9:15pm and finished the concert at 11:00pm. The music sounded amazing. They never screwed up and they sounded just as good live as they do in the studio. The background video was super trippy and just added to the intensity. The place got really pumped when "Time to Pretend" was played and MGMT finished their first act with "Brian Eno". The fans gave them what felt like a 10 minute encore. They came back out and fired up "Kids" and the whole place shook. As we jumped, the floor bounced with us. Totally wild. Andrew and Ben started interacting with the fans and holding up microphones for us to sing and scream. To the great excitement of the crowd, MGMT played nearly all of their songs from "Oracular Spectacular" and "Congratulations" The only 3 songs they did not play was "Pieces of What", "Someone's Missing", and "Lady Dada's Nightmare". MGMT even played a brand new song which sound AWESOME! They ended with the concert with most perfect song, "Congratulations". It was the best way to end the concert and the place was stoked. This is not just the best MGMT concert I have been to, but it is the best concert I have ever been to... period. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

I was so excited to see MGMT live. They're my favorite band and I would've been happy regardless, but they were seriously awesome live. Their music has energy to it when they perfom it live that the records can't capture. I think they've really come a long way with their performances and they are really a quite an act now. I can't wait to see them at a show again!

The Violins were mediocre at best and the only disappointment from an otherwise fun show was the decibel level, I really think they needed to play a lot louder than that. The highlight was when they played into "Roadrunner" by the Modern Lovers. Unfortunately many of the much younger people at the show probably have no idea what that song is, who sings it or what it's about but MGMT played it for a reason (I think). Here's a sample of the lyrics: "I'm in love with modern moonlight 128 when it's dark outside I'm in love with Massachusetts I'm in love with the radio on" I'll find out next week if they play something different in NYC, rock on!

MGMT played a number of songs from Congratulations and Oracular Spectacular. The band seemed really into it tonight, and were talking to the audience a lot. The venue was nice, since the concert was held under a gigantic tent near the water. Only problem is opnce the band came out on stage, everyone stood up (whats the point of having seats then?). Watch out for those crazy prices on food & drinks at the BoA Pavilion. All in all it was fun, and I had a good time.

I don't know if I have been spoiled from other concerts, but this one seemed a bit short. With just releasing a brand new album I would have thought there would be a lot more songs played. Still though they sounded awesome, definitely killed it.

This was my first concert and it was great! Even the opening act got the crowd going with their energy. MGMT is great live and they came back out for their "encore" to sing 3 more songs. It was Will's birthday which made it even better. The crowd sang him "happy birthday" and they even brought out a cake for him. James was pretty loopy which only made the performances better. Toward the end of the show they threw 3 tennis balls and a few drumsticks out to the crowd. Some drunk dude had to ruin my catch and knocked 3 of us to the ground and grabbed it from our hands. Besides that loser, it was an insane experience and i definately plan on going again!

Oh my goodness, MGMT was fantastic! I was a little worried that they wouldn't be good live because their music is just so unique but in reality their recorded music doesn't do them justice. They sounded great and their stage presence was awesome. I guess my only complaint was that it didn't last as long as I would have liked.

The opener, Cola Boyy, was hot garbage. After he was done, there was a 40 minute lag time. The 40 minutes of standing around probably ruined the show for me. There was mayb 3 songs MGMT performed well. Probably wouldn t go again.

The concert venue was the Peabody at Saint Louis, on a Monday night. The upside- it was at the Peabody. The downside- it was a Monday night. The opening act came on around 8:30 and it was a very unique, but highly odd performance with Cola Boyy- a person I have never heard of. I would have preferred no opening act on a Monday for work purposes, and to chose this rather obscure performer was I guess a gamble for MGMT to give a disco-funk solo artist a chance. It was not my cup of tea, but he seemed like a nice guy with a like for disco music. However, MGMT had my attention at the very first song. They had amazing tech screens tethered with psychedelic backgrounds in typical fashion, mixed with humorous 80 s videos. It exceeded my expectations, and they played three very well known, popular songs from Oracular Spectacular, which were very crowd pleasing. They were engaging with the exercise bike and little piano, and played many new songs which were well received. It was a very enjoyable set and I commend MGMT for mixing it up with old favorites and newer songs which were pretty good compared to their last album. A great engaging show in my book!
