I flew all the way from Northern California to Chicago on the spur-of-the-moment to catch The Spongebob Musical in its very first incarnation. I was not disappointed in the least. The sets, costumes, lighting, cast, choreography and score were all wonderful. A tip of the hat to director Tina Landau and her production team for bringing the world of Bikini Bottom to joyous life for all to see. Kids will love the songs, pace and various characters ... and adults will as well. Whoever thought that impending doom could be so much fun? Rhetorical question. I plan to see it next year when it opens in NYC. When the tour comes to San Francisco I'll take my theatre-going group to see it as well. We all need a little Spongebob now.

What a fun time in the theatre. The setting was extraordinary and transformed the auditorium into Bikini Bottom. It was a perfect adaptation of SpongeBob to the stage. Many layers of of stage effects with projections, flying cast members and the most unique contraptions on either side of the state that looked like a giant Mousetrap game. They were functional and deliver large round orange boulders onto the stage. The wide variety of music styles in the score and the cast were very talented singers. It is hard to describe, but it is a real spectacle.

I loved every second of it! Luckily I had the chance to stumble upon the website about a week before I left for my trip to Chicago. Instantly I knew I Needed to go to this musical! I mean how could I not, I grew up watching it! I got a front row seat on the last weekend it would be there!! Thank goodness! Right when I first walked in, the stage blew me away!! It was so beautiful! The cast was amazing!!! And spongebob was definitely spongebob, the actor even laughed just like him! I was smiling the whole time, surprising me each time... Definitely an unforgettable experience!!! Wish I could relive it!

My kids really enjoyed the show but it was very long for a kids program (2.5 hours!). Also - they were really disappointed that Spongebob and Patrick just were regular people. Spongebob didn't actually have a Sponge like body. That's literally a vital part of the character. We have seen other children's musicals where the character adaptation is better. Like Disney's Nemo where they wear skin suit and still hold sticks with the characters. They could have been more innovative in that interpretation.

Took my son for his 18 birthday. The music is really good - amazing list of musicians who contributed. Very cleaver. Second half s better than the first half. It builds to a really fun end. Try to sit on main floor. Better view and more a part f the action. The loge at the oriental is a joke. Worst seats. People who had little kids couldn't see anything. They asked to move to cheaper empty seats and were told no. We moved up to cheaper seats in the second half when the usher was MIA.

Simply outstanding. So fun and a great musical. It was very festive with "Bikini Bay" being reproduced in the theater and lobby area. The drinks were themed too. The songs and actors were tremendous and again, so much fun. A great experience.

I was very apprehensive about going to see the musical. I am so glad I went, it was great!! The main actors have such strong, amazing voices. I don't think I've ever seen an ensemble cast in such physical roles. They did an awesome job. After seeing it myself, I took my granddaughter to see it. She loved it! I'm preparing to see it a third time before the run is over. It is one of the best lively, feel good musicals to come along since Gotta Dance. I would recommend this show to everyone I know. I really hope it gets a chance on Broadway. It deserves it!!!! Congrats to all who got this show together, it's great!!!!!

I wasn't sure what to expect when we bought tickets to the show, but it was amazing! The set design was gorgeous and the quality of the actors, their performances, and music was fabulous! We have been Spongebob fans since it first hit our screens on Nickelodeon. Spongebob the Musical is a show that both new and old Spongebob fans can enjoy!

I wasn't expecting it to be the greatest show ever but this was AWFUL! Limited humor, boring storyline and what was most upsetting was the music! At the very least I was expecting good music with line up of composers! Where was the rockin band to match the master composers? Some Pros: Spongebob was a talented actor. The stage was cool. Squidward was the best of the bunch. Bummed, we were ready for some fun :(

You have to really be a fan of SpongeBob to see this show. Otherwise, I think it would be too random and confusing. We came from Atlanta and were in town visiting and we are big musical theater fans, so we thought it would be a nice family outing. Patrick Star and SpongeBob and Squidward steal the show! The music was great but a little disjointed. Don't sit in the balcony because it's hard to see the balls which come down from the top and sides of the theater during the show. Bikini Bottom fans, don't miss this fun family outing!

We had such an amazing time at the Spongebob Musical, potentially even more fun than the hordes of children around us. It was an amazing experience to know we're sharing Spongebob with a brand new generation of children and Spongebob appeals to them in 2016, the same way it did to us in 1999. The show is fun and funny, the technical elements were amazing, the music is so catchy, I can't wait for the cast recording to come out. They have a real hit on their hands, in my opinion. I hope theater-goers will love it as much as I did.

The musical was terrific. Funny, sweet, optimistic, up-lifting SpongeBob and his friends are the best in live action. I just couldn't imagine this could be pulled off. I love SpongeBob and I just didn't realize that bringing him to life would be possible and have him still be as loveable. The costumes help bring the characters to life and the creativity of the costume and set designers is so impressive. I cannot stop telling people that they HAVE to go see it. I hope they travel because I want an opportunity to see it in my home state, South Carolina.

The show was fun....what was not fun was sitting next to a couple with a three year old who talked through the whole show. It ruined it for me and my husband. I am not blaming the child....but when I bought MY tickets it clearly stated no one under 5 allowed. This was a musical I paid good money for.

What else could you expect from a musical written by people that love Spongebob the way they do? The music phenomenal, but, again, what else would you expect from the amount of big names attached to the musical. From the late great David Bowie to the always hilarious Jonathan Coulton, every note hit home. This is a musical with a lot of heart, and I can't wait to hear people talk about it once it's on Broadway proper.

The Spongebob Musical was so much better than I expected! My friend and I, both 25, bought tickets on a whim knowing all the fantastic musicians who wrote songs for the show. This was so much more than a kids' musical. You really connect with the character of these sea creatures, especially earnest and adorable Bob and Squidward (the amazing rubber-legged Gavin Lee.) Great messages and clever action in this musical with great songs (a dozen big talents contributing numbers) and over-the-top sets and costumes. The audience spontaneously sang the Spongebob TV song (not in the show) after the curtain call! Kids in the audience were delirious with joy!

This musical was amazing!!! I was 8 years old when spongebob first aired. I grew up with the little sponge. The set design magical and blew me away. The actors put on a great show and embodied each and every character. I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by how well the cartoons were portrayed. Great concept and set but the music needs some tweaking. Too many writers and styles/genres of music made it seem kinda busy. But other than that, it was a good show. SpongeBob and Sandy were great. The dancing was great. And Squidward's performance stole the show!!! His performance alone was worth the price of admission. Bravo Squidward!!

This was like a great big colorful fun-filled party! When SpongeBob sang "Best Day Ever" and I looked around and saw "kids" of all ages grinning from ear-to-ear, I realized it really was the best day! The set was filled with bubbles of blues and greens and truly gave you the feeling of being under the sea. The lights were bright and exciting and held the interest of the youngest children. Moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas--whether you are an avid SpongeBob follower or not--it was just plain fun! My daughter is 17 and has loved SpongeBob her whole life. For her this was a dream come true! It was a blast--so much energy! Clever, funny, and true to the characters--it was wonderful. Hats off especially to Squidward and SpongeBob. You nailed it! We loved you guys! Also--Patrick was a hoot--loved his outfit. The appearance of Patchy the Pirate brought lots of laughs. Also noteworthy was the "announcer" in the rainbow suit--great voice and definitely added to the fun. The fact that the entire crew truly looked like they were having the time of their lives added to the magic of the show. Thanks for a memorable night!

As Lifers curious to just how there could b a Musical, how they could have us n others visualize Bikini Bottom, find actors/tresses that look like Sponge, Patrick, Pearl, Squid yadayada....well it happened they landed us in Bikini Bottom within the first 5 minutes of the musical. The actor who played SpongeBob was born to play that role! He was fantastic & so believable. In fact, ALL the characters played the heck out of their roles! The show was amazing. It was funny, VERY well cast, and had such thoughtful lyrics and costumes. The costumes really blew me away, especially Squidward. I was most amazed by the athleticism of Ethan Slater, the actor portraying SpongeBob. From doing the splits to weaving between small holes high above the stage, he was very impressive. His voice, as well as the voices of Gavin Lee(Squidward) and Emmy Raver-Lampman(Pearl) stood out to me as particularly both well cast and well acted. Overall, I loved every minute of it and can't wait to see it again!

I took my 16 yr old neice to the show who grew up on Spongebob. Not being familiar with the characters, I was a bit skeptical. We walked into the theater, the stage over took your senses with such beautiful color and texture. They had part of the orchestra playing music on the side of the stage up high, as part of the set. Once the show started, it went from zero to 10 quickly and captured our attention. The costumes, music, set and actors, were all wonderful. There was so much stimulation with the colors and textures and humor. A lot of times I find there can be a lull at points in musicals, but not in Spongebob. It was great through the first intermission and continued through the end. There wasn't a dull moment. There were 2 - songs that will compete with any musical for talent, fun, dance and song. They made you want to get up and dance along. Not to compare, but for me and my age, I thought it was like I was in a live Dr. Suess land. So whimsical and fun. More so, my neice who LOVES Spongebob, loved the show.

Even though we had no kids with us and knew almost nothing about SpongeBob, we thoroughly enjoyed the show. The performers are top-notch, the set is amazing, and the costumes extremely clever. Squidward is especially well done, both his costume and performance. The songs are by a variety of artists so, of course, some are much better than others. Cyndi Lauper's "Hero is my Middle Name" is a real standout. Go, have fun.

I asked my mom for tickets to go see this musical for my 18th birthday. Little did I know we would have front row seats to one of the best show I've ever seen! When you first walk into Oriental, the set/lighting puts you right in the mood of being a kid again. It was magical and eccentric to say the least. I was sitting close to Patchy the Pirate and even got a selfie with him. The musical numbers were exciting and witty, each character was perfect, the costumes were spot-on and the story line was entertaining. There are a few kinks that will be worked out I'm sure, and I only noticed them because I've done theatre for so long. There were references to the TV show which were great. Overall, I would definitely go see the show again. There isn't a bad seat in the house. If you want an amplified version of your favorite cartoon with twice as many songs, this is a must see musical!

Karen and Plankton had a more romantic feel which was kind of awkward but was alright still. The hip hop seen plankton also had didn't really go with his character I thought but was still good in music and ALL the performances had awesome choreography! The stage crew did an amazing job as well wih all the background. I honestly wanted to cry twice because it was so amazing. Please see, the deserve the best viewers!

As a huge SpongeBob fan myself, this was like actually watching an actual episode of SpongeBob. I loved how they included all of the known characters as well as Patchy the Pirate. This is a show for anyone who grew up watching this unforgettable show. Ethan Slater was born to play America's favorite sponge. Danny Skinner and Lili Cooper were perfect as Patrick and Sandy. Gavin Lee was phenomenal as Squidward. I feel optimistic and positive that this show is heading for Broadway. After seeing this show, it will really make every day feel like the "Best Day Ever."

I bought these tickets for my daughter and was thinking I could reluctantly stomach this for her sake. I am soooo not a fan of the TV cartoon. Imagine my surprise when I ended up thoroughly enjoying myself! It was witty, funny, colorful, fun..... we had a great time and I am so glad I went! My daughter loved it too. I am glad we caught this before it left Chicago.

Though I was simply hoping for something that my 6 year old son would enjoy, I got that and so much more. It was very entertaining, but stayed true to everything the cartoon represents as well. Each of the characters were cast very well and each actor/actress were fantastic in their role(s). I would recommend this to anyone who is a child or child at heart... and strongly recommend it to anyone who has ever like SpongeBob.

I was curious about this show as I heard several good bands wrote the music and my curiousity won me over. I decided I'm going and I asked a friend and she was up for it at the last minute. Thank goodness we went! It was such a fun show. I've seen the cartoon a few times so I knew who the characters were. It didn't matter if you had kids or not because it was an entertaining and creative show even for adults. I realized near the end that I had a smile on my face the whole time. I thought the ingenuity with the costumes and the scenery were so fascinating! I loved that. I told my mother about the creativity of it all and she told her friends so they added it to their New York City trip agenda as a result. If you are looking for something fun and happy to see, I highly recommend it! I'm just so happy I saw it! What a shame it would have been to miss it.

What a visual feast! Never seen such a colorful production. Think psychedelic tiki bar meets a neon lit aquarium. The sets and costumes were amazing. The music was really good also. Very funny and amusing show.

This was an absolutely enjoyable show for not only children and fans of Spongebob, but anyone who loves theater. The actors who portrayed Spongebob and Squidworth were phenomenal. The set design was fantastic and the directing was spot on. My only reason for not giving the show 5 stars, the songs were not memorable or catchy. Usually when leaving a musical, there is at least one song that plays in your head for the rest of the day. Although Squidworths song was a show stopper, I still couldn't tell you how the song went.

The sets were excellent and the lighting was as good as I have seen. Some of the costumes were excellent. The story, however, was weak and it is difficult to overcome a weak story (the show suffers from an identity crisis--is it geared for kids or general audiences). Otherwise, the voices were uneven, the score was uneven, and the acting was just mixed. I think they are in for a very short run on Broadway and that is not a bad thing.

Loved this so much I came back with my nephew, a lifelong Spongebob fan. The stage adaptation is very clever, and absolutely true to the spirit of the original cartoon. The cast is unbelievably energetic, and spot-on with their voice and gesture characterizations. For me, the most gratifying part was that the good old-fashioned tap dance number generated the most excitement, getting its own standing ovation, and the audience screamed approval when the kick-line formed. The Spongebob Musical is such a satisfying blend of contemporary humor and good old-fashioned stagecraft, with nothing that will make parents cringe, but plenty to amuse all ages.

Having teen children and basically hating the cartoon, my wife and I dreaded the SpongeBob musical, but attended as part of our season tickets. I can not say enough about what an incredible musical this show it. The story was cheesy in spongebob fashion, but was extremely entertaining. The characters each had their own life and played into the story making it captivating. The set was mind blowing with both amazing effects, but also how the characters interacted with each other and the set. The props were amazing and kept surprising the audience on how a single prop can bring life to the show. But perhaps the best thing I can say is that the talent in this show is perhaps the most amazing cast in any Broadway show I've seen lately. The voices were amazing. The choreography was so well executed that actors play off each other and the set. The physical fears that sponge bob does was also incredible (along with his acting and singing) Everything is intentional, and even the little details of the play add value to the story. The dancing was amazing and the show brought in tons of musical variety. The show was so good, that we brought our kids back to see it. This time our seats were closer, and the actors facial expressions brought even more life to the show. I encourage adults and kids alike see this show. Time blew by, and I truly mean that the cast was amazing. Go see it.

I'm guessing I am not the target audience. I've never seen the TV show. That didn't stop the fun seeing this show during the Chicago tryout. The fun started when the band arrived early to play pre-show music to put the audience in a laid-back island mood. The musical director joined later with a kazoo-like instrument. The set is wonderful and I spent plenty of pre-show time looking at the details. The set appears to be created from many everyday objects - boxes, ladders, red plastic cups, foam pool floats, etc. Costumes were perfect - they didn't go for the obvious and most of the main characters wore shirts and pants/shorts. When necessary, some fanciful animal costumes were mixed in. Performance, story and music were top-notch. The introduction of a pirate who interrupted the evening was well done. The story never lagged and the inventiveness maintained a high level throughout. By the end, I was smiling and left the theater in a great mood. If this show is offered in New York, go see it. Don't worry about kids - don't worry that you haven't seen the cartoon - just go and enjoy being a kid again for a few hours.

That was what my 11 yr stated when I asked her how she like the musical. I'd have to agree, it's not a typical musical, quaint, quirky and fun. The set was cute, the tie in of the musicians and conductor was fun and effective. Even the pre-music group was quirky, what was the girl playing or singing??? If youre talking about the show days later I'd say that last a good indicator that the show was entertaining. Coudos to the actor who played spongebob, very physically demanding role and he was even able to sing while climbing upside down!!!

The Spongebob Musical was the most fun we have ever had at the theater. We went with two families of mothers and college age daughters and everyone loved it. We smiled and laughed through the entire clever and heartwarming show. I wish we could have seen it several times, as there was so much going on it was hard to process. The acting was fantastic and the set design and music production were amazing. I am looking forward to the soundtrack! Our only complaint was the number of families who brought very young children who yelled, cried or mimicked the cast throughout the show, which was disrupting and rude. One toddler cried repeatedly and the parents did not leave the theater to console or quiet the child which was frustrating for the audience. Otherwise our Spongebob experience was the best show ever for us.

I loved this show! I had no idea that so many artists had collaborated and written songs for the show. The sets were so detailed and fun, and they did a great job of incorporating fun tidbits from the real show into the musical. Would recommend to any SpongeBob fans!

Thank you Chicago for hosting the world premiere of "The SpongeBob Musical". It was the perfect musical to introduce our 8 year old grandson to Broadway. The stage was so full and fun! We all loved Squidward's costume! Our Grandson told us at the end of the evening it was the Best Day Ever!! He was even dancing in the aisle after the play! It was a Blast!!!

We were a bit disappointed. The show is more for kids, albeit, a bit long for them. I was hoping for more "adult" humor, not dirty, but clever. It was missing the quirkiness and funny, clever lines of the tv show. Not that I wanted them repeated, but new ones. My husband & I thought the boxes that were used to depict climbing the volcano were confusing at first. I don't think they should have had fragile marked on their sides and it looked like they were in a storage area. We initially thought they were practicing for the climb. We also did not like Chop to the Top and agree that Pearl and Mr. Crabs characters need some work. I liked the Pirate and had high hopes when it started with him, but oh well. As for Plankton, either make him a puppet or a man, not both. I think a puppet would be better. Perhaps having a giant magnifying glass to see him. Also, maybe they could have put a fish bowl for breathing on Sandy's head like in the show. I think that someone who has never seen the tv show would be very confused about these characters. They need a little more added to their costumes like Squidwards tentacles. Give Sandy a bushy tail, make Pearl look more whalish, give Patrick some rays (arms) so he looks more starfishy.

We brought our 3 sons, 12, 9, 7, to the musical thinking they would enjoy it and we would come along for the ride. The kids loved it, and so did we. All of your favorite Bikini Bottom characters were there and the actors channeled their personalities perfectly. The writers kept the great mix of kid appropriate material with hidden parent jokes that we have come to know and love about SpongeBob. The stage set up was colorful and inventive; there was always something to look at and the props were amazing. I only gave it 4 stars because the first half dragged a little; the second half was fast paced and the songs were awesome!

Well, we chose this because it was my spouse's 49th birthday and we have a 6 year old and a teenager as well, but are new to the area and had no babysitter..thus the SPSP choice. So approached the evening with a bit of, " well how bad can it be...". We were pleasantly surprised and had an amazing evening. I want to know when the score will be available for purchase and really had a great evening. Highly recommend the show for anyone interested in a great lighthearted musical.

I throughly enjoyed the upbeat and unbelievably creative world of the Spongebob musical! I am not familiar with the tv show, but listened to positive reviews to see this. Ethan Slater, who plays Spongebob, is wonderful, as is the rest of the cast. There is real, sincere heart in this show and it is a visual stunner. Families seemed to have a wonderful time!!! I didn't find the music to be memorable, but I left the theatre smiling.
