I had no real expectations going in to see The Return of the King. It surpassed all of my expectations. The orchestra, the conductor, the choirs, and the soloists made for a very pleasurable experience. It was like watching one of your favorite movies and going to a great concert, simultaneously. The soloists were spectacular, giving me goosebumps on more than one occasion. Many kudos go to the conductor for the perfect synchronization of film and score. The Mann did a great job with the parking, the seating, and the concessions. If I had one complaint, it would be the number of people looking at their mobile phones during the performance. The light from them was distracting. Phones should be put away.

The energy of the live orchestra, adult choir, boys choir, combined with the energy of the live soloists, energy of the live audience, and the powerful movie combined to create a magical event. The venue provided a beautiful setting. It was fun seeing costumed audience members. This is a must-see for any LOTR enthusiast.

This exceeded all of my expectations. I have watched The Lord of the Rings several times and while I always enjoyed the soundtrack it was in the background. The live orchestra was fabulous and only added to the films magic. Their timing was spot on, the soloists amazing, and the choir was beautiful. No one made a sound through the entire performance. Totally wrapped in the experience.

Loved it. Symphony was fabulous, and it wasgreat being able to see the film on a big screen again, with a thousand like-minded people. LOTR films have some of the best soundtracks ever written, this was an amazing experience. I appreciated the fact that people weren't allowed to wander in & out during the performance. We had an aisle directly in front of us and we were concerned about people walking by and obstructing our view, but it didn't happen. My *only* complaint - the screen had a noticeable "line" right down the middle, and the film was very slightly darker on the right side of the screen than on the left. Not enough to make a big difference, but it WAS noticeable. That should have been corrected before the event started.

I really didn't know what to expect going in. When the conductor raised his hands, and a movie started playing I knew it was going to be a long night.. So I bought another beer. The music was fantastic, but the movie sometimes overshadowed the music. The floor seats were very very uncomfortable, so much that we had to move to an empty section so we could spread out. The floor seats were more expensive, but the seats in the stadium section were actually better. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but would have rather sat in a Harkins chair if I knew it was going to be that long and cramped.

The orchestra was spot-on in its delivery. The singers were hauntingly beautiful, and the boy's choir were incredibly disciplined as they had to stay still for hours! Their angelic voices was reminiscent of my youth in the hills of Italy. I brought my whole family, and highly recommend events such as this to your kids, as the experience is enriching and awe-inspiring for them. The only downside to the event was that the arena was charging $8.25 for a soda!! We drank water.

Pretty dismal crowd at the Glendale concert. Probably because it was a Wednesday night, and the concert went very late. The concert itself was excellent. They could've been faking it for all I know; everything was so pitch-perfect. I would have enjoyed seeing more costumes and props, though. The Star Wars tour was better in that regard, although I preferred the LOTR concert overall. Nobody in costume except two folks with elvish capes. Not many kids, and a pretty low key energy overall. Again, I think this has more to do with it being Wednesday night and going until nearly 11:30. They really should've held the concert on a weekend afternoon and made the tickets more affordable. I paid a premium for floor seats and ended up switching locations post-intermission. From the front row I could only see the string section and some of the choir. I couldn't see percussion or brass. (I could also see guitar and accordion players who seemed to do almost nothing--not their fault, but still... The folks in strings did ALL the work.) The subtitles were a much appreciated touch, but the orchestra's heads were in the way. Really, the set up at Jobing stunk. Put the audience on platforms and the orchestra in a pit. And here's another idea for next year: A second screen showing a close-up camera feed of different orchestra and choir members. Oh, and while it was great seeing Fellowship on a big screen again, it was pretty washed out because of the lighting. The Moria scenes in particular were hard to make out. Despite my criticisms of the venue, I'm very glad I went. The music is wonderful, and to hear it played live was indeed a treat. I hope Two Towers comes to Glendale next year... but it was such a poor turn out that The Powers That Be may decide it's not worth the trouble. (That would make me a Sad Hobbit.)

Since seeing the movie, I thought it would be a wonderful experience to see it accompanied by a live orchestra and chorus. I thought this would never happen. It happened!! This is the most extraordinary concert I have ever attended. Long...more than 3 hrs but worth every minute. Seeing the movie while listening to live voices singing and a live orchestra shouldn't be missed. Like many people I didn't know this concert was even playing. It was quite by accident I heard about it. My LOTR fan friends also said they'd not heard about it. Something like this needs more advertising or social media effort to get the word out. No wonder the place was only half full !!

I was really disappointed with this concert. I thought it was going to be like the Star Wars in concert where the score of the films was the star of the show. This was nothing more than watching the full FOTR film with a live orchestra. Don't get me wrong they played BEAUTIFULLY and the choir was amazing (otherwise I would have scored 1 star). I just didn't know it was just going to be them playing as the film played. Very disappointing. It would have been great to see parts of Howard Shore's beautiful score from ALL three films showcased. I really enjoy the LOTR films but can't help but feel I would have been better off watching it at home on bluray with surround sound. Not that big of a deal but I was also disappointed at the lack of the film's memorabilia. At the Star Wars in Concert series there were props, etc all over. At this concert there were a couple nice statues and a couple swords that's it.

An amazing experience, especially if you are a fan of the movie and Howard Shore. There is something intimate about watching the conductor, orchestra and choirs creating the music as the movie plays. You begin to realize what Howard Shore has done musically during some scenes that you didn't notice before and it opens up the musical soundscape even more.

LOTR In Concert was a great symphony/movie hybrid. The full theatrical release played on a giant screen, less the soundtrack. The music was filled in by a full orchestra, choir, soloist, and local boys choir. An experience to remember. If Two Towers and Return of the King come to town, my wife and I will be there too.

What a pleasure to hear such a fine orchestra and chorus, with the film in the background. Moving, stirring sound and melody. The CD is as amazing. (Suggestions: tone down the movie dialogue a little. Please spotlight orchestral solos better; I really wanted to see the horns and woodwinds better. Make the intermission a little shorter) Thank you for a wonderful evening.

The show itself was priceless and unbelievable. The Orchestra was phenomenal. My biggest issue was the sitting arrangement. Terrible and awful deal. We could not see the stage was too low crumbed together and just unpleasant! I feel bad because I love the movie and the music was out of this world but they need to set up sitting in a much smarter and efficient way. Most expensive tickets and not been able to see? It does not make sense.

My only complaint was that they should have started later as the projected screen was kind of hard to see in the beginning. But it's understandable as to why they'd want to start early, it's a 3 hour movie...but I went to the Two Towers performance last year, and will continue to go to these events so long as the orchestra is putting them on. It's like seeing your favorite movies for the first time again.

The Return of the King is my favorite movie, and the Philadelphia Orchestra's rendition did not disappoint! The soundtrack seemed more expressive than ever before, with stunning instrumentals and remarkable vocalists. The mixing of the film's sound and the score was different from a home viewing, but created a unique experience that allowed a different perspective on the familiar film. The staff and facilities at the venue where top notch, and the crowd's participation elevated the atmosphere even more! I would highly recommend this to a friend.

Wow. The concert was amazing! I always love seeing movies with the orchestra playing the soundtrack. The Lord of the Rings has the best soundtrack of all time, and the orchestra did a wonderful job bringing this to life. Unfortunately, the food was TERRIBLE. We had $12 cheesesteaks that were cold and disgusting. I was so hungry that I ate the whole thing, but regretted it in the middle of the night when I woke up nauseous. I should have known better to never eat their food again.

I played in orchestra/symphony groups up through college, and so I go to shows such as this (and Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park, etc) with an intent to focus on the live performance more than the movie itself. However.... this group is just SO phenomenal that I found my eyes drawn to the screen from pure immersion. It took conscious effort to break concentration and realize the soundtrack was happening live, in that moment. Which is a testament to the group's excellence.

I've always been a huge fan of Howard Shore's score for the Lord of the Rings films, so when I heard about this concert, attendance was a no-brainer. The show did not disappoint. The live music was exquisite, and it was particularly neat to hear the vocals in a different style, especially with the soloists. As for the film itself, well, I've seen it more time than I can count, and yet this almost felt like seeing it for the first time--there were enough people in the audience who weren't as familiar with the films that they still laughed at all the jokes and gasped when someone got hurt. Overall, it was a lovely experience, and I plan on attending the concerts for the next two films, assuming they are put on in coming years.

Lord of the Rings is already an epic movie experience in and of itself, but seeing it with the live symphony orchestra was truly unforgettable! I can't imagine the level of skill and precision, the amount of dedication and rehearsal, necessary to so seamlessly align live music with the film; at times I was so immersed in the movie that I forgot the orchestra was even there, and I believe that truly speaks to what a fantastic job they did. The choirs and soloists were exceptional as well; hearing their renditions of the vocal pieces gave me goosebumps!

I had heard about this concert earlier this year and I knew that I had to go to it. Being an avid Lord of the Rings fan, I knew each song by heart and couldn t wait to hear it in person. I was shown into the large Honda Center arena which had been transformed into a concert hall. Chairs filled the entire floor and a large projection of the movie title was on a large tarp, which hung right behind where the singers and performers would be. Before attending the concert, I did some background research to find out who exactly I would see. I already knew that Howard Shore was the composer, but I found out that Ludwig Wicki would be the conductor, that the instrumental portion of the songs would be played by Munich Symphony and that the voices would be from the Pacific Chorale and the Phoenix Boys Choir. I couldn t wait to listen to the Pacific Chorale again, but I was more excited to see the Phoenix Boys Choir. I had always known that young boys could hit high notes, but now I was able to hear it in real time. When The Prophecy began to play, I instantly got chills. Concerning Hobbits followed, and the entire room filled with cheers and applause. After the movie played, I began to open my ears to the singers. The Treason of Isengard was a surreal moment for me because the power coming from the voices of the Pacific Chorale was overwhelming. They definitely sounded like one huge impulse of sound and I could sense the power, for lack of better term, from their voices. It was incredible. The trumpets were loud, but their voices were never covered by the sound of the instruments. The next song that I noted was A Knife in the Dark. Like the song previously mentioned, the entire choir sounded like a large impulse of sound. There were a lot of spots in the song that enabled them to breath in the beginning and I could tell that they took every chance that they could to breathe in order to make sure that they wouldn t run out of breathe during the longer notes. Towards the end of the song, one of the boys from the Phoenix Chorale had a solo. He was clearly nervous, and he was out of breath fro the first note, but everyone applauded after his solo none-the-less. One of my favourite songs that I heard that night was Lothlorien. I never had a real appreciation of that song when I had watched the movie, but after I heard the performance in person it became an instant favourite. The fact that there were so many layers of voices was fascinated to me. Their voices were timid, haunting, but at the same time very strong. There was great breath support throughout the entire song, and stagger breathing was definitely going on throughout the song. A soloist, by the name of Kaitlyn Lusk, took her part outstandingly towards the end of the song. Her voice was deep, in a sense that her sound was rounded rather than nasal-y. The next song was, The Great River, in which the voices of the Pacific Chorale blended into the sound of the trumpets and violins perfectly. The choir almost sounded like the instrument that was playing along. It was harmony of man and instrument. Amon Hen followed. This song was playing during the scene in which Boromir of Gondor was in battle and would eventually fall. It was amazing to see how one song can transform from being loud and fast paces into tranquil and light sounding. The singers were faint in sound, almost angelic, which made the scene of Boromir s death even more emotional. It almost made me question whether or not the choir was singing or if I had just heard something else. The last song of the movie was The Breaking of the Fellowship. At this point of the movie I was immensely overwhelmed by the movie, the choir, and the orchestra, and so I was admittedly in tears. I noticed that the choir still kept a good posture, even though they were all on stage for almost three whole hours. Never once did I see them reach for a water bottle, slouch, or stretch. That was incredible for me, and I started to wonder if I was capable of doing that for even one hour. Their dedication was truly inspiring. Even though they probably spend weeks preparing for the performance, they never looked bored. As the credits rolled up, another soloist from the Phoenix Boys Choir began to sing. While some audience members started to walk out, most stayed. I was amazed by the high notes that the boy reached. The acoustics enhanced his already angelic voice, and it echoed through the entire Honda center. It was clear that he was loose and had a lifted soft pallet. The soloist, Kaitlyn Lusk, came up for the last song of the night, May It Be. She vocalized the song when it was appropriate, and although there were many long notes throughout the song, she did not look out of breath. Especially the lyrics mornie, alantie were sung beautifully, and even my mom looked over at me and said that was amazing. The entire concert, in fact, was amazing.

Oracle Arena was a great venue; our seats were perfect and I would not have been pleased sitting anywhere else, the view of the screen & orchestra was the best! I am hoping to be able to get the same seats for next year's LOTR Concert for The Two Towers film. The music from the orchestra and the singing from the chorus & soloists brought this movie to life more powerfully than watching it in a regular theater. I am so glad that the captioning was on so even though the music swelled louder than it would on a soundtrack, we could still enjoy the dialogue even when unable to hear it over the music. It was well-worth the cost of this event!

As a film AND music afficienados, by husband & I were completely wrapped-up in the experience of "The Lord of the Rings in Concert." Fans of the Tolkien series, as well, it was a full-sensory experience to have a live symphony and vocal chorales presenting the score while we, once again, enjoyed the tale of the "fellowship." Several times throughout the evening, I began to forget there was an actual orchestra in front of us (perhaps due to the location of our floor seating), and re-focused my attentions to the skills of the musical talent on stage. The evening was a complete delight, and we look forward to "The Two Towers."

The was much better than I expected. I'm a fan but not obsessed with LOTR. I saw the movie in theater and then when they came out on video but had not seen it since then. The orchestra was great. The performance was superb. This was an awesome event. I can't wait for the second and third in this series next year the Two Towers in 2012 and The Return of the King in 2013, on each film s tenth anniversary.

I know the movie backwards and forwards including the extended versions. I am a musician myself and LOVE the soundtrack to LOTR. To be able to listen to the music live while watching the film is indescribable. Music I've heard for years and always assumed a soprano was singing, only to find out it's a solo from a member of the Boys Choir - blew me away!! While sitting in the audience, for the first time I could hear that there was a choir singing in parts I had always that were just instruments. It was a masterpiece!! A joy to listen to and to watch. I'm planning on going to the next two movies when they come (AND tell a lot of others I know who will enjoy it as much as I did)!

The Key Arena first opened in the 60s and was renovated in the 90s. It shows it's age. The seating was designed when there was less variance in the size/weight of people. Be prepared for narrow seats and little room for your legs. But the show itself was a real joy to watch. Both the Orchestra and Choir (must have been 120 plus in the choir) were unbelievably good. I have no idea how longed they practiced Orchestra\\ Choir\\Movie dialog but their timing was perfect. All we're spot on with their performances and it sync'd perfect with the movie. The dialog was quieter than if you watched just the movie but captions were displayed on the screen. It all worked well and viewing while simultaneously hearing the Orchestra and Choir perform the music soundtrack was something I won't soon forget. I plan on attending the next concert in 2012. I didn't give it a 5 star only because of the facility. The event was well worth the money.

This concert was AMAZING! The score is so powerful when watching the movie at home - but to experience it live was really an amazing experience. I had goose-bumps and tingles throughout the concert. The music and vocals were just beautiful. I would highly recommend this concert to not just any LOTR fan - but anyone who loves music.

You've never see The Lord of the Rings like this! Giant screen with the movie and then an orchestral performance with 200+ musician. Absolutely amazing. You'll want to see them paly every time you watch the movies. Can't wait until the next film comes out In Concert

I got these tickets for my boyfriend for our 8 years anniversary. I purchased the floor tickets thinking that our seats would be extraordinary... boy was I wrong. Especially if you have giants sitting in front of you. I paid a little over $360 for 2. Next time I'll make sure to get seated on the side. I was row 19 from the front and still unsatisfied. However, the concert was beautiful. I kind of forgot the fact that there was an orchestra playing because they played so accurate compared to the movie.

Nothing compares to walking into the lobby and having a Nazgul positioned with sword in hand to greet you - talk about getting you lost in the movie right away! Any admirer (dare I say, lover?) of the LOTR Trilogy, orchestras and/or choirs should not miss this event! It is spectacular! Have you watched a movie and ever been taken aback by the beauty of the soundtrack? Well here is one you won't want to miss. The power, the emotion... it was like seeing The Fellowship of the Ring again for the first time. Every musician had my full attention until the very end... including through the credits as soloists were provided to carry those melodies as well!

This was an excellent even, definitely worth a 50$ price tag. If you are going to any large arena, I recommend you to arrive early, and have something to do do in the car while you wait to enter the venue. The timing of the orchestra with the movie was absolutely amazing, and it made for so much more than just watching a film. If I hadn't been able to see the orchestra and choir hard at work down there, I would have been hard pressed to realize the music was being played live (other than the strength of the vocals and score). If you are a LoTR fan or a music fan in general, I recommend this event to you. Only negatives: Be aware that people will clap, all the time. They clap when the orchestra starts filing onto stage, for the soloist, for the conductor, every time a memorable line is said, etc etc etc. It got to be a little ridiculous. I love Legolas as much as the next 20-something, but there is no reason to clap and scream for him when he first appears. Because we live in a digital world, there were people on their cell phones throughout the entire show. I found this to be extremely rude, but maybe that won't bother you as much as it bothered me :).

There is only one way to see the lord of the rings: watching it on the biggest screen on the planet, surrounded by people dressed as Hobbits, with a live orchestra and choir playing the score. (And while eating a funnel cake.) This was an experience of a lifetime. Now that I have seen this movie with the orchestra accompaniment, watching the nine members of the fellowship run through the Mines of Moria will never be quite the same. The sounds system of a regular TV just doesn't do it justice.

What an incredible experience to see the movie on the very large screen and hear the score and music performed live. It is a chilling and moving experience. The movie really comes alive with the performance and is not just a flat performance on the screen. The performers were outstanding, from the experienced and professional Munich Symphony to the youngest, well trained Phoenix Boys Choir, with their pure, clear voices. Enjoyed seeing Maestro Wicki conduct the music. It was overall one of the most entertaining events I have attended in some while, to have the perfect marriage of film and music performed in this manner.

What an amazing experience to listen to the score played along with one of the best movies of all time! It was surreal. Usually the focus is on the screen and you know where the music is taking you subconsciously. This way, the music is featured and you realize how integral it is to the movie and what a beautifully written score it is. The performers were dead on, the soloist sang like an angel. I can't wait for the second and third movie concerts to come to AZ!

Howard Shore's music was always one of my favorite parts of the Lord of the Rings movies when I watched them growing up. The Philadelphia Orchestra really brings this music and the films to life with a vibrant performance that breathes with the film in a manner that is impossible to replicate with a recording.

It is a brilliant idea to present films with full, uncut music track, performed live by such great ensembles - one can hear all the music and not just pieces here and there. The only challenge is that, in an amphitheatre, power amplification of the sound is required, and that was the weak point of the performance. Next time, top quality, high end equipment shall be used; the sound was quite unpleasantly distorted, both in terms of frequency equalisation and the harmonic and non-harmonic distortions (it sounded quite rough). The musicians performance was world class, and the conductor clearly had a good idea how to run the score!

It was an excellent show! Highly recommend it for any Lord of the Rings fan. The music and singing was well done. On occasion the music/singing overpowered the movie and it was hard to hear the actual dialogue from the movie but overall that did not take away from the experience. Other than some of the visual obstructions scattered around the Amphitheater limiting where you could sit and view the movie the experience was a good one! Glad we did it!

OMG. This experience lived up to and beyond our expectations. What an amazing idea - to have the screening of the movie with live music and song! It was beautifully done, it was an enjoyable night out under the stars, sharing chuckles, groans, and tears with other fans. The musicians and singers were fantastic - I often found myself craning around watching the orchestra instead of the movie screen! I just wish the horns had been more visible - they are my favorite. Drove home with the music of the Fellowship on in the car :-) Thanks for an incredible, memorable night. Please do it again with the other movies!!

My 15 year old son asked me to take him to this show as he is a big fan of all of the Lord of the Rings episodes. He also plays in his high school band so I was excited to check out the show. He told me he had "goosebumps" all over as the Symphony started to play. The Red Hat Amphitheater was super nice and extremely clean ! Had a wonderful time.

We went to this event because we loved the movie, but also because I personally love seeing music played live. It was an extra treat to have live singing with the music as well. The production was very well done, and it was very nice to have the closed captioning on the screen for those parts where the live music was actually a little louder than the dialogue. Great show!

The Lord of the Rings concert at Red Hat Amphitheater was a wonderful presentation of the first movie. The symphony and the choir were amazing. I do not care for the venue much, however. I could have overlooked the city noise, as we knew this was an amphitheater in downtown Raleigh. That was expected - plus the fire engine during the ringwraithes' entrance was a nice touch :P The main issue was the design of the seating. It does not seem to have the same incline as they have at Meymandi. Our seats were pretty much right in the middle of the venue, but we had an extremely difficult time seeing anything over the people in front of us. Our seats were not worth the price we paid for them. We would love it if we had the opportunity to see/hear them do the second and third movies, but would choose different seats, accordingly. If we couldn't snatch up some of the few seats with a decent view, I am not sure we would do it again.

I'm a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings, so seeing it this way was truly incredible. In particular I loved the battle/chase scenes at the end of the movie - it's where the live symphony and chorus was the most noticeable and awe inspiring. I'm really hoping they do the rest of the movies - I would go see this again!

This performance demonstrated how crucial the soundtrack is in a movie. There were times that I was listening to the symphony, and the movie was the background. There were times that I was so absorbed by the movie that I forgot the symphony was playing. I also thought the vocal sections of the score really stood out in this setting. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Greatly enjoyed the music provided by the NC Symphony, NC Master Chorale, and the Raleigh Boys Choir as we watched the Fellowship of the Rings movie. What a treat! Hobbits, elves, orcs, and a cast of thousands -- and that was just on the stage. An amazing marathon performance by the members of the North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Master Chorale, Raleigh Boychoir, and North Carolina Boychoir. Watching them perform while trying to keep up with the film bordered on sensory overload, but doing so was well worth the effort. After a grueling week of rehearsals and six hours of performance in two days, I hope all the musicians got to sleep in the next morning
