King Crimson

KING CRIMSON IN CONCERT:You can't keep a good band down -- legendary prog rock pioneers King Crimson ended a five-year hiatus in 2014 with the announcement of a fall US tour. The group has called it quits several times over the decades, but their love of music and passion for performing always bring them back to the stage. The band's current lineup -- its eighth since 1969 -- includes founder and primary creative force Robert Fripp alongside three drummers, two guitar players, and a flutist-saxophonist. Beloved for their virtuosic musicianship and extended live jamming, the veteran performers will take fans on an unforgettable musical journey through their hallowed discography on their An Evening with King Crimson tour.

I've been going to King Crimson shows since the early 70's and they just keep getting better. If you get the chance to see them don't miss it, you will not regret seeing this band.

Powerful. Sublime. Amazing. I couldn't understand why the bathroom lines were so long at half time - it was because no one left their seat during the 3+ hour epiphany. Musicianship at its highest level. I've seen all the bands with multiple drummers and none held a candle to the display Crimson put forth. Simply mesmerizing !

I've been going to Robert Fripp performances for 35 years; some amazing, some thought provoking, one I walked out of. To be a Fripp fan is a challenge, since he's not so interested in pleasing audiences as in bringing them along in his intellectual musical journey. I'm just a little too young (56) to have been a fan and seen King Crimson in their meaty prime years of the early to mid seventies, (if they even played in Boston then) and lamented that some of the best, most intense, soul searing music of all time would fade away. Since the demise of the Fripp/Whetton/Bruford band in 1975, Fripp seemed quite uninterested in resurrecting any of this, his best material for reasons we can only guess at. The grateful audience yelled "Thank you Robert" several times as the band indulged us with the heaviest material from the albums "Red" and "Larks Tongues in Aspic". The intensity was overwhelming as I kept saying to myself "I can't believe this is happening. This is truly a dream come true!" And we all watched in awe as this little old guy and a bunch of almost as old guys made it happen with the same precision and intensity but with creative new elements to give it freshness. It was as if after 40 years Fripp decided "Oh why not let them have it after all." I was psyched to see many young faces in the audience though the average age was around 50. I have talked to young musicians in their teens and twenties who are big King Crimson fans and I am glad that it now seems to be getting recognition from a new generation.

I have seen King Crimson several times over the years but that was perhaps the best show I have seen, by them or anyone else. The three-drummer attack was incredible. The whole band was amazing, but Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison really stood out as the two best musicians on the stage. Robert Fripp was incredible as well. As I said to my wife when I got home, I could see that exact same show every night and not get tired of it. Level 5, Larks Tounge in Aspic II, the drums intro. to 21 Century Schizoid Man, Starless, and Talking Drum were all incredible. I hope that this lineup continues to tour beyond their current dates because I definitely want to see them again.

I've attended several King Crimson shows over the last thirty (yes, thirty) years. The show in Boston was perhaps the most incredible, creative and unforgettable show I've ever seen. This version of the band was cohesive, precise and energetic, with too many brilliant moments to count. They played steadily for almost two hours, then came back for a wonderful Schizoid Man encore. My only regret is that I couldn't return the following night for the second show.

The King Crimson show was awesome! I haven t been a fan over the years, except for wearing out a copy of Discipline when I was in college. I ve always liked Robert Fripp though, especially his work with David Bowie. When I saw they were coming to Boston, I bought tickets and started listening to them again. Wow, what I ve been missing. The show was nothing less than perfect. The band played with precision and a ton of energy. They played a good cross section of their catalog (except anything from Discipline!) I d highly recommend anyone seeing them. They are true musicians.

Robert Fripp is a guitar deity. That should be reason enough to go see him play. This time out he's collected some new faces as well as some old. The band performed many of my favorite KC pieces, from "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" to "Starless" . Incredibly talented musicians improvising in a progressive rock setting makes for a truly entertaining experience.

I should probably give the show five stars, but I'm a fan of Adrian Belew's tenure in the band, so I was kind of bummed that he wasn't a part of this incarnation. I've been a casual fan of King Crimson for a number of years, so it was a real treat to finally see them perform live. Watching how the seven-member band works together, interacting and playing off each other, was wonderful to watch (including three percussionists!) I really could have watched them play twice as long.

I was raised on progressive rock, King crimson being a staple in that daily dose of music in our home. I was blown away at the concert Monday night, the band was phenominal, the sound was perfect, and the venue was the perfect setting for them to play. Possibly the best display of musicianship, showmanship, and all around awesomeness that I have ever witnessed!!!

Was expecting to see a great show and got a stupendous show instead. While I am a big fan, I have never had the opportunity to see King Crimson live until this line-up performed...boy have I been missing out. I have seen Tony Levin a few times with Peter Gabriel, so I knew the bar was going to be set pretty high on the talent meter, but boy was I blown away - not too often where you get to see one or two world-class musicians show you how its done - but we all got to see seven of the best of the best deliver an awe inspiring night of music.

Sound quality was extremely poor at the beginning moving to just terrible at the end of the show (and I was in row 15 centered). What's the point of having 3 drummers other than giving a news line to promote the King Crimson comeback? You could only hear a clean sound from other instruments (or simply Jakko s voice) in the songs where drummers barely played. The sound mixing was also terrible. In the songs where you were expecting Tony s bass to sound predominantly (e.g. Sailor s Tale) you couldn t hear him, while bass sound was too loud in songs without bass leadership. I m sure they will improve sound quality in the future shows (Boston was only 3rd city in the tour). Honestly, I enjoyed much more the 21st Century Schizoid Band concert in 2003. Mel Collins and Jakko were parto of them (plus Ian McDonald & Peter Giles). I would like to know their view\u2026

I hate flashbacks...except when it takes a turn to 74....Mastellato did a wonderful Jamie Muir, sans blood letting, Rieflin and Fripp combined to recreate David Cross, Harrison and Rieflin formed a straight edge Bill "When I Doubt, Roll" Bruford, Tony channelled Wettons thump and Jakko his vocals....leaving Fripp to be....AND Mel Collins! A full plate indeed. One More Red Nightmare, Starless, Sailor's Tale, Two Parts Aspic, and a Schizoid in a pear tree! The doctor did indeed cure what ailed me. Oh, and the drummer gamelan...sweet! Some wonderful interplay between Pat and Gavin. Tony also played some amazing funky fingers! Fripp still maintained the cone of silence...no photos, no recording...in a day when everyone has this ability, why bother. He also looked smashing in those lock down headphones!

This 2 hour performance trilled and excited. The band played a cross-section of their history in 3D--w/3drummers. This allowed, even, more embellishment to what was already great. Mel Collins saxaphones/flute playing weaved audio-delight and added jazzy-notes for added richness and depth. The encore of "21st Century Schizoidman" was the icing-on-the-cake. Lets hope this incarnation finds interest in staying together for all to enjoy.

Crimson put on an amazing show, performing many 70's tunes for the first time since the 70's. I'm a bit disappointed that I paid a premium price to be right up in front of the stage, as the sound was a bit muddy. Saw the same show the next night from the Mezzanine, and it sounded amazing.

WOW, Fripp has put together not only an incredible lineup of musicians but a fantastic song set that encompused his full repitoir. Going from Larks Tongue in Aspic to some of his more recent works. The three drummers out front was exactly where they should have been. Fripp put his band out front and let them fly. Even uncharacteristically smiled a few times. They looked to be really ejoying themselves. My wife had never heard them and felt it was best show she had seen as well. She is not a hard rock 60's fan. Only group I tried to get tickets for the next night and rearrange my flight ect to see again. WOW

When I saw the setlist for the previous night I was disappointed because I was hoping to hear most of the songs from their first album. The only one in the setlist was 21st Century Schizoid Man. However it took them only a few minutes to make me realize that they were simply playing great music - however you choose to categorize it, if at all. For me, most of the evening was filled with a creative Jazz quality that felt like an evolution of their early music. It was more about sound and rhythm than melody, filled with a mixture of live and synth sounds and noise. The concept of 3 drummers worked out great and it was fun to watch them coordinate and syncopate with one another. Everyone on stage was worth listening to, individually or ensemble. I was surprised and pleased. I hope some Berkeley students were listening. It's a shame that they don't allow photos. I understand the video restriction, I guess, but non-flash photos?

I've been a Crimson fan for many years, and this rendition does not disappoint in any way. The Michigan theatre is a very nice concert venue, good view even from my place in the back. King Crimson was in good form - the encore 21st Century Schizoid Man had thrilling soli from Robert Fripp, Mel Collins and Gavin Harrison, suitably applauded by drummer colleague Pat Mastelotto. You got to hear Epitaph, Court of the Crimson King, Starless, Easy Money, Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part I+2, The Construkction of Light. I liked particularly the Lizard Suite with the whole Battle of Glass Tears, the beautiful rendering of Islands and Moonchild with improvisations by Tony Levin and Jakko Jakszyk/Jeremy Stacey. Also, Neurotica came across stronger than on the Chicago live CD. Personally, I would have liked to hear Discipline, The Errors and Fallen Angel, but that's a matter of taste. It was absolutely worth to come to Ann Arbor - while being in Chicago on vacation - for this intense concert with a great display of musicianship. I found the flute somewhat buried in the mix, the volume of the drums was too high at times to hear all other nuances.

I had the back row of the balcony at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan with My Friend. I could easily view the full stage. I have been a fan since My Older Brother gave Me the first album by King Crimson, for my 11th Birthday back in 1969. The show was Stunning and Brilliant. The band played All across Their extensive discography. I especially liked when They played the material from the first album and the title track from "Starless and Bible Black". They played, "21st Century Schizoid Man" for Their one song encore. Don't get Me wrong, They played for at least over 2 and a half hours with only one 20 minute intermission. My only disappointment was that They did not play "Heroes" ,( a David Bowie song) that they performed live in Berlin last Year in 2016 that I watched on You-tube. I am so glad I was able to buy a Tour T-shirt. Bottom line, Well worth the price of admission. Robert Fripp is a Living Legend and I was Very grateful to get to See Him and the Band perform again. I saw Them back in 1984. They Rocked then and They Rocked This time, as well, Big-time. I hope this helps.

What a band and what a show! KC was in top form at the Michigan Theater for this show. It s been 21 years since they last played this room on the Thrak tour. that show is still rattling in my head and like most I didn t think they could exceed that. But I stand corrected! It s obvious the band has been playing together for a while now and they are extremely tight on very difficult material. Adding a third drummer just ratcheted up the performance up several notches. The interplay between the musicians was uncanny And kept your attention for the entire show I never checked my Watch once! I got more familiar with some older material during the show and they just succeeded on every level. The sound was great at the MT and what a magnificent show.

The latest incarnation has rolled into New York City as part of the fall tour. The band consists of 8 musicians. An evening of musical fireworks and transitory journeys entailed. A pure spectacle of sound that lasted 3 hours with a short intermission between acts. Show of a lifetime for a long time fan of their music, especially from the older albums. The band obviously practiced and reacquainted themselves with the older catalog, giving a crisp performance throughout. I loved the three drum kits in the front. I expected a muddy muddled percussion sound, but instead heard synchronicity at every note. The venue was nearly sold out 2 months in advance so I chose 2 seats at the extreme right, making me miss seeing Fripp and the other guitarist. No great loss, Fripp sits stoically on a stool and emotes strictly through the amplifier. My only other regret was not getting tickets for night two, as playlist was different. I left with a warm memory. Thank you.

The Crimson Kings do it again. I am a long time fan of this band. I have seen them many times over the last 35 years. This incarnation of the band is the best ever. They are going through the old 1969-76 catalog of music and it is fantastic. Three drummers in front of the stage is very unique and a sight to see and here. Robert Fripp is an interesting genius that for the first time I can remember he is smiling and enjoying this band. He has toured once hidding behind the speakers (boo hiss). This seems to be a great time for him. The musicianship is stellar. The 3 headed monster of drummers is like watching a tennis match. Back and forth and around again. The setlist is never played in the same order with pieces change out every night as well. Fripp wants it to be an experience for the eyes and ears. STRICT enforcement of no photos or videos is there. I must say I do enjoy going to a show and not looking at the person in front of me snapping or shooting all night. They even shut the bars down as they are on the floor and would detract from the performance. While I think that is a bit much. It was the best sound for this venue ever. Only complaint about the venue has been the noise from too many that chatter through the show. Isn't that what drinks after the show are about? But experience this show anyway you can. It is unlike anything you've ever seen or heard.....

Typical Fripp right upon entry to the venue.....notices everywhere and could not be missed that photography and recording would not be tolerated. Then followed by the verbal notice right before the show. Fripp, the master of perfection, expects the same from his music, his band and his audience. This line-up included three drummers which was amazing in their talent and their coordination with the music and each other. Three hour show plus the 20 minute intermission. Certainly worth the price of admission ($70 + fees). Intricate, detailed and everything you would expect from King Crimson. Being an autograph fan and already knowing how difficult getting a Fripp autograph can be I tried anyway. There were only THREE fans waiting outside for an autograph and true to form, Mr. Fripp nodded his acknowledgement and kept going. I don't understand but certainly his prerogative.....ce le vie

I have seen this band on two other occasions, a week before in Philadelphia and a year or so ago in NYC. This band, in its current format (double quartet) is such a force that it left me stunned and surprised at how good they are. It was a kinder, gentler Fripp and Company, playing a fair selection of songs from ITCCK (title song, Moonchild, Epitaph and 21st Century Schizoid Man), a fair selection from Red, and a fair selection from the later iterations of Crim (Indiscipline, Construction of Light (I think)). Old music, played in a new way making it brand new again. And what a venue. The nice people at Miller Symphony Hall were so nice and friendly. As an old school concert-goer, that is just unusual. With the deaths of John Wetton and Greg Lake, the voices behind Crimson are falling fast. Go see this band, if you have an attention span.

Consummate musicians, finely tuned in to one another producing seemless compositions. Most enjoyable were the three drummers fronting the band, by far the best I've seen. And always nice to see the great Robert Fripp and Tony Levin.

It was my first KC concert. They don't have tour often. They used to play only their newer stuff which I don't care much in the past. But this time they played their '70s stuff and even their '80 and '90 stuff sounded much better than the studio albums. Probably due to the front three drummers. I misses Greg Lake and John Wetton but the new (relatively) singer Jakko Jakszyk fits well with the band. I was glad to see Tony Levin and Mel Collins. The only original member is Robert Fripp now. He wears a big headphone which covers almost all of his white hair head and the face, sitting bedsides the big monitors. He is facing to the other band members, not much interaction with the fan but that was OK, I think. No other talk, no jokes, not even introducing of the band, just 3 hour intense and tight music from the start till the end and I love it! I was sitting on the 2nd floor front, good view and the acoustic was amazing. A person who must be 300 pounds next to me was dancing on the seat whole time and next seats were shaky. I told him 'please..' few times but he didn't care, so selfish. Three drummers were positively loud and I was glad that I was not on the front seat. Photos and videos were not allowed except for the very last moments, after the performance when Tony took his camera out. Robert was facing to us but he covered his face with his camera phone.

I was so happy that Robert Fripp dug up music from the original band. In honor of Greg Lake and John Wetton this vocalist was absolutely amazing.

No light show at all, no music introductions, no dialogue at all, really well thought out use of three drummers. Technically superb, but it was done as an orchestral rendition, not a rock show. You can pay your money (or keep it) and take your choice.

I love that this was a strict "don't even look at your phone" event. Nothings more lame than a bunch of "fans" snapping zillions of pics and videos. Fortunately - this was a show the way a show should be... people just enjoying it for the magic that it is. King Crimson never disappoints and this show was no different. 3 drummers worked better than I imagined. Levin was, as usual, amazing. Fripp has had more influence on prog in the world than most people realize. Perfect evening!

My dad and his friend are die hard fans of all King Crimson iterations. I enjoyed it, but not on their level. It was an 11 star show for them, but it's my fault for not being more in tune to KC. I didn't recognize all of the songs etc. but it was a great performance from the band!

"an evening of incredible joy, creativity, fellowship with my audience members, and a sense that I was experiencing a singular event, one that I might never be part of again. It was thrilling, mesmerizing, and incredibly unique. I've never been to a concert where there was a standing ovation after each song. I think because each song performed was so brilliant on its own, the SO was well deserved. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to experience KC live in this incredible line up of musicians. I'm grateful to have been in the audience and share this experience with so many others. Time is fleeting, who knows how long this team will play together. Try to see them wherever you can." - Steve Korasida's fb review oft the Chicago show a few days later applies equally well to the Minneapolis show. A truly satisfying experience.

Saw the Thursday Mtn. Winery and Saturday's Fox Theater shows. This tour has 3 percussionists. Three of a perfect pair that they had last tour, I guess. Worth seeing both shows as they played at least 6 different tunes from 2 nights before. No lack of power and delicacy from this lineup. Mel Collins played great. Most material covered the Lake, Boz, Haskell, and Wetton bands. Robert Fripp and Tony Levin may take your picture after the show, so look sharp if you go. My son texted me after the show reminded me of road trips listening to a Young Persons Guide mix tape that had Cat Food on it. See the exchage in photos. I want to see them in Mexico City with my fan friend from Costa Rica. What about it Hans?

An amazing night of KC revisited. The featured (early KC works) thru me back into more "psycodelic" times. 3 drummers that were perfectly syncronized thruought all the complex KC patterns! Mel Collins,Tony Levin and Jakko blended as if they'd been together thru all 5 decades! A MUST SEE event, if you've EVER liked Robert Fripps works!

I have seen a couple hundred concerts in my life. Many of the greatest bands of all time. The King Crimson show may have been the best. I went in as a casual listener of their music and came out dumb struck. It was a sonic assault for the full concert. Powerful. Complex. Layered. Delicate. Moving. Like nothing I have ever experienced.

The King Crimson concert was disappointing for the ambience and delivery. The Rocksino at Northfield Park is a poor venue for any stirring act like King Crimson. They move people beyond words and there is no way to express it at Rocksino-Northfield Park. There people -- guards and concertgoers alike -- adhere to a Crimson no standing convention. There needs to be if not a mosh pit, an official standing/ headbanging commons area. Of course Robert Fripp, the only Crimson original member, and band leader all these years, doesn't put up with any modicum of appreciation of all he has done. In fact spirited fans make him jittery. He's not an autograph signer generally either. Now let's get on to more of Crimson's actual concert delivery. Their live "Epitaph" was cosmic. The encore of "21st Century Schizoid Man" was rousing. No recording by any band could come close to this energy. For once the three drummers rose to the occasion, but generally that is a ridiculous gimmick, as stupid as RIck Wakeman's red cape ... and at least Wakeman is friendly and open, unlike anyone in this ensemble. C'mon at least with three kits, you gotta have more than 30 seconds of double-kick per show. Double bass drum propels you to the heavens. Please indeed get with the 21st Century, like your song implies, or retire. Alright I gotta say more nice things about the Crimson show. It wasn't an entire throwaway, though honestly it mostly was. In the second "set," if you could call it that -- Fripp doesn't understand a fan's money's worth -- there was a totally tripped out, improvisational jam. That was truly ethereal. But you gotta remember every moment like that is balanced by an overdose of keys and sax in other numbers. Totally sugary and corny. If you have any Crimson albums, you know all is in good measure there. The band is not a good live self-regulator.

King Crimson displayed their musicianship in a show that traversed their 50-year catalog from "The Court of the Crimson King" to their most recent recording. The venue, however was average at best. I would have rated it lower if I wasn't in back on risers as I probably would have had a hard time seeing.

King Crimson's performance at the Michigan Theater was a swirl of melodious and heavy rock with its signature rhythmic varieties that both punched and washed over me. After fixing an early problem with the vocal being buried in the mix of killer guitars, horns, electronics, and three drum sets, the tightness of the band showed through with multiple instruments hitting every note of even the most the complex songs. Each album from Court to Larks' Tongues was represented (along with cuts from the 80s and 90s groups) and they played almost the entire Court of the Crimson King album--a real treat! Ears, body, and mind all felt the impact of this great concert!

All in all I really liked the King Crimson show. I really didn't get the benefit of having 3 drummers. Guess I didn't feel the magic.. I'm also a purist when it comes to the vocals. For me Greg Lake was the best they ever had. I would rather hear a new/different vocalist come in w/ their own unique style and add a something to an older tune than try to emulate the great one... I wasn't impressed. The instrumentation was superb. The 2nd set was the best. I commend them for stopping the photography. It's so annoying anymore to be at a show and everyone in front and around you are holding their cell phones up in the air. The venue is another story. It was 'literally' an 'intimate' evening with King Crimson as we had to sit on one another's laps as the chairs are hooked together. The floor is flat so you can't see in front of you without swaying back and forth to peak between the heads of those in front of you. PS: The 1 star was for the venue rating NOT the show. I find this misleading. They should have separate ratings for each not just the venue. Had I not read the instructions carefully it would have been more stars for the artists themselves.

KIng Crimson put on a great show! Their mastery of their instruments was 2nd to none and this was really one of the better concerts I have attended in recent years. I have never been to a concert that featured 3 drummers, all on stage at the same time and they all really rocked the house. Crimson played a mixture of old and new and showed off their expertise in all of them. Finally, the sound mix was extraordinary and the venue was great too. Overall, a really good show!

It was a great gift for my husband, his favorite band from his high school days. The venue is always spot on, and the band performed flawlessly. Enjoyed the no cell phone glow from the balcony view. Parking pass is a great add on. And Nico restaurant is a nice place to catch a bite/drink before the show. We ve been to several shows at NJPac and all have been 5star events. King Crimson not only delivered but exceeded expectations on classic songs. I have to say hearing Heroes was definitely a highlight for me being a huge fan of Bowie and Fripp. But nothing disappointed in this show. This is the second time we've seen them on this tour and the shows were varied enough to definitely make it worth seeing them more than once. See them as much as you can! But see them at least once. Another highlight of the show...the three drummers at the front of the stage...amazing to watch and hear. A group of really great musicians doing what they do best. Thank you King Crimson!

No light show or any visual props or displays. Just 8 very talented musicians cranking for about 3 hours. The stage and the musicians were very neat and clean and tight kind of corporate. Not really a rock concert but more of a talented music fest. The crowd was quite mature with lots of canes and walkers. The venue security was hard core on the phones and devices so that was refreshing but they wouldnt even let you check your phone on your lap which was a bit over the edge. Recommended for pure prog jazz enthusiasts only, not really a rock concert atmosphere here. Very enjoyable if you just want lots of hard core prog jazz but very little diversity or much of anything else

This was my second show in a week. I can honestly say they keep getting better.! They changed their set from when I saw them in Atlanta. I would love to see the rest of the tour. Anyone thinking about going to see them, grab your tickets now. It's once in a lifetime experience. I sspoke with some people who saw them in the 60's. They said they are just as good, if not better, then when they saw them back then. There is no other band like King Crimson. Enjoy the show! Kudos to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The current incarnation is unusual in that the three drummers are downstage, not upstage on risers. Their visual prominence is reflected in the music. Add the return of keys & sax/flute & you have a listening experience unlike any other band. The music covers a range of styles from light to heavy.
